Vibration noise - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
How do you find the vibration motor noise when pressing soft keys etc.?
I'm coming from a Nexus 5 and it seems a bit loud and rattly on the new Moto X. I can't work out if it's normal or not.
I tried to make a recording but it seems near impossible to get a good one that's reflective of what I actually hear.
Thanks

Mine sounds like its trying to buzzsaw its way out of the bamboo lol. I was going to check some in store units to see if its similar. How's everyone else's?

mine is waaaay too strong i kinda love it but it startles me frequently, is there a way to dial it back some?

The vibration when I press my keys is fine, but the vibration when I get a call or text is loud as hell...

[Q] Rattling sound from inside HTC One...

Hey guys,
Ive had my HTC One for about a month now and I have just noticed there is a very faint rattling noise when I tap the top-back of the phone gently with my finger.
The sound is almost like it could be the volume rocker, but I’m quite sure it isn’t. And it cannot be heard when I shake the phone, only when tapped with my finger.
Just wondering if anyone can confirm or deny the same experience with their device, or if they have any suspicions as to what might be making the sound.
Thanks for your help.
I think I know what you are talking about.
I think it is the way the phone is designed. Basically the speakers will get activated and all you hear is very subtle noise. Then when it deactivates after couple second you touched the back button. The speaker will let out this little noise not as subtle, but still very quiet.
Is that what you're hearing?

Hi Xx-Ness-xX,
Thanks for the reply. I dont think it sounds like the speakers. When I tap the back, Im not touching any button. Just tapping the area within a 1-2cm radius of the camera will produce the sound.
Also, the sound is not ongoing, it only last a fraction of a second, as long as the plain tap sound.

It's the camera focus mechanism. It's normal.
Awesome, thanks a lot for the response alanchai. Logical and relieving.
Thanks again.

Sorry I didn't explain clearly enough. The sound I am describing also only last a fraction of a second. The easiest way to tell is to check "Touch sounds" under Settings --> Sound. Then go to a quiet room, after the touch sound is played (either by pressing back capacitive button or on screen button) wait about a second or two then you should be able to hear a noise when the speakers get deactivated.

Hi again Xx-Ness-xX,
Ahhh, that makes sense. I do normally have ‘touch sounds’ deactivated. But following your instructions, I do hear the faint hiss when the speakers are activated (but not producing any intentional noise). I’m pretty sure this is a common trait when current is being fed to speakers (not just in phones). So you shouldn’t be concerned about that sound coming from your speakers.
I do, however, believe that the noise I was originally questioning in the original post is produced by the rattle of the camera focus mechanism, as suggested by alanchai.
Cheers.

So when I'm typing at all. The vibration motor makes a like scratching noise and doesn't vibrate but when say I call it. It'll vibrate normally. Is this normal?

Some of the Nexus 5 devices have this too. Some consider it a defect, and some dont. If you dislike it, I would just exchange device for a new one.

I'm noticing this, too. I also saw a similar post on the nexus 6 subreddit.
Can more owners of the Nexus 6 chime in? Is this a defect or normal?
Mine does it as well - I think it's normal. Probably the camera lens.
Mine too
The vibrator in this phone is really loud. If it is a ticking sound I agree that it is probably the OIS parts in the camera making noise as they move around since the motors appears to be near the camera. IF you shake your phone you might be able to hear it as well and a lot of people think that's a defect when they've not use a device with OIS before.
Occasionally once I start typing a lot, yes. I just turned the vibration length down in the keyboard settings... helped somewhat.
Ah so this one also must have cheap vibrator like n5. I wished it had Samsung like one. Bad..
I had to exchange my first N6 for a new one due to the sensors failing. My original one did exactly this, it was driving me nuts. My new one does not though.
Mine is loud but it doesn't rattle anything
Mine is loud also. Noticeable while in a quiet room. Nothing seems broken but I hate it drives me nuts. Other then that phone is great
On the first generation nexus 5, I've observed this. The culprit was the loose physical buttons. Do check the same on the nex6 as well.
Changing the orientation of the phone usually helps.
Yeah I was just thinking today how ****ty mine sounds when I'm in a quiet environment. I turned off my feedback for the keyboard . Went back to my M8 and that vibration is solid when typing.
I've returned att n6 for vibrator rattle. I am not exchanging it becuz I don't want to play return game. I am really disapponted for this price they used cheap vibrator like N5. I am done.
Anybody doesn't hear rattle I quiet environment?
Mine is loud also.
Had the same problem on my first n6. The second one is MUCH better!
I'm not talking about loud vibrator. Something's rattling while vibrating in quiet environment. You hear it.
I notice this too when I use haptic feedback on my Nexus 6. I hear a click/rattle or something coming from the top speaker. It's kinda annoying in a quiet environment.
It only happens when it vibrates quickly (i.e. typing with haptic feedback on). I don't hear it when there's a longer vibration (i.e. incoming message/phone call). Either that, or the vibration is so powerful/loud it's overcoming the rattle.
I'm going to the AT&T store after work that has a Nexus 6 demo model. I'll compare it with that and report back with my findings.
Mine seems to have this issue too. I can hear some noises when I'm typing with haptic feedback on. Not a big issue to me too since I dislike typing with haptic feedback.

[Q] Nexus 6 Vibration Clicking

I upgraded from a Nexus 5 and am now a proud owner of a Nexus 6. The issue I'm having is that occasionally the haptic feedback on my phone will have weird clicking noises as i'm typing. I have read MANY people having this issue, but i'm not sure if I should get this swapped out or not? Any advice would be appreciated, other than the annoying random clicking of the vibrating motor (which isnt an OS sound nor the camera lens), my device seems flawless. I have heard people swapping them out and getting screens that are tinted yellow/pink though.
P.S. I also have a weird noise when my Nexus 6 starts wirelessly charging.....you hear the sound from the speaker and then the vibration motor makes a hissing noise.....anyone else have that?

I had hissing when I was on the phone. My camera was also defective so I returned mine. Waiting on a replacement

Dude I have the same "issue" with the hepatic feedback. Some say it's a manufacture tolerance, some it is de IS of the camera moving by the vibration motor, some that it is the speakers. I really don't know what to think now and I am starting to get used to . I am afraid of replacing it because another manufacture problem could appear.
Because my unit beside this, again, "issue" it's flawless like yours.

Any issues recording video? Check out a thread I started here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/video-recording-constantly-refocuses-t2980109
If you listen closely to the video I posted, you can here it refocusing in the video. And when I shake it, I hear the same sound. If you are experiencing this, I would get it replaced. I sent mine back yesterday.

That's not focus it seems to be the IS of the camera trying to stabilize the shot. Don't got that problem... Yet hahaha. It started a while after you got the phone or right out of the box???
Yeah I have the same issue and my replacement does too, are you on AT&T?

Well I swapped it out and it seems the vibration click and hissing is gone. You can still hear the IS vibrate, but there isnt that added weird click with it thats random. Im on Sprint, now im having an issue with getting the Data activated UGHH! There is a ! next to the Signal bars and LTE keeps flashing.......durn
So the IS still clicks/vibrate?
Definitively a manufacturing tolerance issue or design one.

Vibration motor: What is it supposed to sound like/do?

Mine just goes kinda like a little dink sound. Hate to send it back as bluetooth/radio/screen/everything is perfect so far. Only had a few days.
not sure what little dink sound means but the motor on the nexus 6 is a bit loud and may sound rattling. it's prevalent and known thing. I've replaced my first n6 not due to the vibration but they both made the same sound when it vibrates.

Yes, difficult to describe, but what I mean is it barely makes any sound at all, just a small dink, like a cross between 90% click and 10% vibration.

Noisy vibration?

Hello, I've just got this phone, and I'm wondering if I got a dud. Can anyone check if they can clearly hear the vibration motor? For example when long-pressing on the home screen. On my device it is very strong and quite loud in a quiet enviroment. On my previous Xperia device, the X, it was strong, but really silent and smooth.
No one can answer this question? It is a simple test: long press on the home screen. Does it make a buzz sound?

Long press home screen I reserved for assistant apps like Google assistant.
You can choose them.
I deactivated it somehow.
Maybe because I removed the Google assistant app and use a different app.
The vibration motor on this phone is supposed to be stronger then others. I don't find mine to be disturbing though. My wife has the Xperia X and that is actually louder than mine.

My previously Nexus 6 was loud as hell.
In my opinion the xz2 vibration now only half as strong.
