Android L discussion thread - Sprint HTC One (M8)

from llabtoofer...
http://llabtoofer.com/2014/10/19/htc-android-5-0-lolipop-update/
So which devices will get it? Here the list that I can share for now. Please remember, it’s not final one, some devices are still under evaluation and there is high possibility that they won’t get update. With Android 5.0 Lollipop update, some “old” devices will receive Sense with EYE experience (not all features will be available on old devices)
HTC One (M8), HTC One (M7) are the first to get Android 5.0, timeframe for GPE is late November-December, for Sense based devices January-February.
HTC Desire EYE, HTC One (M8) Dual SIM, HTC One (M7) Dual SIM, HTC One (E8), HTC One (E8) Dual SIM, HTC Butterfly 2 should receive updates in January-March.
HTC One Mini 2, Desire 816 more likely to get updates in March-April
HTC One Max, HTC One Mini, HTC Butterfly S – March-May
Other devices from Desire line especially that are based on MTK processors are still under evaluation and I can’t say anything specific about them, as they are produced on ODM bases, so software development is mainly lay on ODMs…
That’s all for now, if you like this article, share it over social buttons below! Stay tuned!

Any info on ART vs Dalvik out there? I've read plenty and understand the difference, but haven't seen any actual comparison tests.

I'm gonna guess by end of year...wishful thinking
assuming L is officially released today, the 90 day clock begins, but I have a feeling HTC has already begun working on

No, it's Sense 3.6. OTA means Over-The-Air which means you can update your phone without wiping. It's not the whole ROM, It's just a bunch of new files. I hope you get that despite my bad explanation

If HTC keep upgrading us to the latest versions of sense/android, we will have no reason to upgrade to a newer phone
Also, they are not making any money on these upgrades, just keeping us happy who have bought the phone a year or so ago

Oh well. I have my HD Revolution, so Bell's lack of updating isn't an issue for me.

[Q] s-off

Can the Att htc-one get s-off?
ohh my calm down there buddy....they just announced the phone today....
I see where he's coming from though. Not being able to develop on the phone is probably a deal breaker for me too.

Yea, but you realize that it's almost a year after the release?
I now bought a new phone, and my HOX still has S-ON. If I had a qualcom HOX, I'd be enjoying S-OFF for.. not even a week, because my Nexus4 just arrived.
The new HTC One really is amazing. Perfect hardware and the design is awesome as always from HTC.
But as long they treat our devs like that, I won't buy a phone of them again. :/
I hope it is S-off
Just saw a user named lime, something in general section. He already has the device and his is S-off (he works for a mobile phone company, I guess). I would think having S-off, or maybe even ENG hboot available for dump would help greatly toward S-off. Evo lte got S-off months ago, and every hboot update since then revolutionary has been able to crack. Now the HOX and DNA and One S just got S-off yesterday. I'd say it's pretty likely.
From my Evo LTE, yup.

I fDNA got it then i see no reason why HTC ONE wont? its the same architecture chips on both..One is slightly overclocked thats it.
I know that as soon as devs get their hands on it, the work will start on getting S-Off. But asking when is the same as asking when (fill in the blank) ROM will be released/ updated - No one can tell you because no one knows how long it will take. Also, there are no professionals doing this - They all have day jobs and this type of dev work is a hobby that people enjoy doing and they're not on a schedule.
It will happen when it does and I'll be fine with stock rooted for starters myself. :good:

HTC Desire 510 Software Update - 1.47.652.1
This Software Enhancement provides the following enhancements / improvements for the HTC Desire 510:
Sprint Application updates:
Sprint Zone
Mobile ID
Visual Voicemail
Lumen Toolbar – (Lollipop MU following in 2015 This will be removed)
This update will also provide a fix to address the following post launch issue:
Some users may see a persistent notification message referring to a SMITH tool expiration – logging tool for HTC. This notification has zero impact on the usability of the device, but the message is confusing to the customer. This message will no longer be displayed with this MR
Software version is 1.47.652.1
This update is rolled out in batches
Refer to the Sprint HTC Desire 510 Software Update in Support for install instructions

Lollipop on desire 510
Not sure if this belongs here, but I accidentally posted it here so I apologize to the mod who has to move it.
I've found a couple links online with steps for installing lollipop on the desire 510. They reference the XDA forums but I cannot find any such thread. Can anyone tell me if this is true/works? I'm eager to get lollipop and don't want to wait for HTC to release if I don't have to, lol.

Thanks in advance to anyone able to shed some light on the situation.

No, man. It's false. Currently, the only ROMs that are available for this device are NonSense, RevMod, & CM11, and even CM is in an alpha state. Lollipop hasn't arrived for this device yet.

There was a leaked schedule saying which and when HTC phones will receive the lollipop update (or at least sense 7). It said the 510 will get it sometime around April. If not, most likely May or June.

It's a scam. You look at it and the 3 links all require you to sign up for a bogus product and by the look off it they charge you a lot for nothing.
If the devs here haven't succeeded yet why would we even think this crowd have done it 6 months ago
Yeah wouldn't trust that page myself. For starters they claim it's a lollipop ROM for the desire 510 but it doesn't exist according to htc's update page, second they claim they had re written a guide from here on xda, I don't recall ever seeing a guide about upgrading this device to lollipop anywhere, third they show screen shots of an aosp styled lollipop but this is an htc device which would have (most likely) sense 7 so either the screen shots are of a generic lollipop or just wrong, fourth the ROM size, multiple parts totaling nearly a gigabyte in size. Assuming the screen shots are correct there is no reason why the ROM should be that large.
Now as far as lollipop for our device and it's availability I did find a website which (among other info) states the following:
The Rest Of HTC's Stable...
“The Android Lollipop update looks as if it will spread throughout 2015,” reports Phone Probe, “with the higher-end devices receiving the update in the first half of the year. Of those expected to get the Lollipop treatment in Q1 of 2015 are the HTC One M8 and the HTC One M7. As expected, they get the update first.”
Q2 of 2015: One E8, Desire EYE, One M8 EYE, Butterfly 2.
Q3 of 2015: One Max, M7 Dual SIM, Desire 816, Desire 820u, One M8 Mini, One E8 China, One M8 EYE China.
Q4 of 2015: Desire 510, 610, 820s, and One Mini.

This phone has seen Lollipop thanks to @r3pwn.. You just don't know how to install it.
HTC has already said that the Desire 510 won't be getting Lollipop.
HTC has already said that the desire won't be getting Lollipop:
PhoneNews .com / htc-confirms-desire-510-sprint-virgin-models-wont-get-lollipop-30689
(I'm sorry I can't post an outside link yet.)
So our only hope, as far as I've seen, so far is CM12 which is being worked on by r3pwn and rbheromax. Personally I'm watching with baited breath and occasionally testing what they have already released.

Lollipop

As for the Android 5.0 Lollipop, a private leaked info reveals the flagship smartphones, One M7 and M8, will get updated to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop during the first week of January. That's great news for those who are looking to get their hands on the Sense 6.0 on Android 5.0.1 updated handset. Saw this on a site, wonder if it's accurate

Hope so. I really want lollipop and WiFi calling
January 3rd, I've heard. But of course, that will be for the international edition.
Plus, this update ins't as big as I was hoping. I was hoping for a revamped version of sense, one that was slightly more polished and efficient. Unfortunately, it looks like we're stuck with Sense 6(.x). The M9 will probably debut with Sense 7.
That's alright, Lollipop is great on its own.
Hopefully.

I'm not so worried about it. From the screenshots leaked by Llabtoofer, Sense 6 looks good with Material Design aspects. I'll be buying the new HTC Flagship this Spring anyway.

I don't know why everyone is jumping ship aside from maybe the camera. This phone has held up really well, and I still adore it. With ART/Project Volta, it should be even better. If HTC doesn't botch the update, then my other complaint, battery life, should be resolved.

I'm not so much jumping ship, just that I have this uncontrollable urge to have the very best on the market. I skipped over the M8 because I didn't see any reason for it when we received Sense 6. But I know we won't be getting Sense 7, and if we do, it'll probably make the phone feel sluggish. I'll still keep it, but I definitely want to see what 2015 has in store.
The M9 looks like a beast. Honestly I love HTC and I plan to stick with them. An update for my M7 will do until the M9 arrives.

I'm neither a dev nor formally educated, so you should take this with a grain of salt.
ART - Android runtime. It's supposed to deliver better performance by precompiling code; ie it's translated into machine language beforehand, compared to Dalvik runtime, which compiles "just in time".
Project Volta: Along with giving users a more comprehensive look at their battery comsumption, this is a set of APIs that allows devs to schedule their wakelocks, aka background processes, more efficiently. This will not have any effect until implemented by devs, I believe.
Neither of these will make a difference of night and day. But it will be a definite improvement.
