[Q] Motocare uk - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I wanted motocare but seems that we cant have it in uk. What insurance are you guys/girls using in uk?
thanks

I am not using any kind of insurance.
However there are various mobile phone insurance firms that can cover you for a reasonable fee.
Or you can get one of those premium bank accounts that usually provide mobile phone cover as one of the benefits.

Before one buys a used atrix hd off the bay, how does he make sure the imei had not been blacklisted by at&t? Especially if he lives overseas and has no way of trying out an at&t sim for a few weeks before he visits the US?
I understand atrix hd is also offered on contract. So what is stopping from someone taking it on the contract for cheap and buy a code from ebay and unlock the phone. Missed payments could make at&t blacklist the phone right?
I guess one way to avoid buying a stolen phone is to insist on the box with the sale, but how does one protect oneself about the above possibility?
AT&T employee here. Phones being blacklisted due to missed payments is usually only a CDMA thing, and AT&T just blacklist if reported stolen. Blacklisting is becoming more and more of an issue, so it is something to keep in mind when buying used from individuals. I would recommend getting them to provide you with the IMEI then call AT&T customer service 1-800-331-0500 to check it to see if it's clear.

Thanks. I just called them. They told me that they do not keep a list like that! I'll send you a PM about it.

Try and buy from a good seller also. Look for "good imei" or something like that. As long as it is listed as good, eBay will protect you investment, aka refund you if you get the shaft lol

Exactly. Ebay is all for protecting buyers, and unfortunately not sellers.

If you want a good site with good imei then try swappa. Com I have purchased several android phones there and never had a problem, and the site checks the imei for u before u purchase the phone.

they just implimented a beta service today
Check out Swappa's new ESN Check (Beta) service. Validate with carriers to ensure ESN is clean for activation. swappa.com/esn

glad to help,i just bought an s3 like new for 390.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but ESN checking would only work for CDMA phones right?

yes that is correct ESN is just for cdma phones but swappa check's IMEI as well just thought id throw that lil bit of info out there if anyone was interested.
when ever i have sold a phone on swappa the first thing i have to do is give swappa the IMEI so they can confirm if it is good.

Unfortunately though, I live overseas, and I wouldn't be able to check if it works on AT&T until I try their sim in a month or two! Hence the pickle.
Swappa recognized the IMEI as the correct device but could not validate the status. Is CheckMEND a reliable solution?

Another quick clarification on the statement above. So, what happens to GSM phones that are bought on contract at a subsidized price and unlocked via one of the many third party sites online (if it is possible to illegally unlock phones on contract that is)? AT&T does nothing about it and just bears the loss?

if you unlock a gsm phone 90% of the time you can use them with any carrier ,i believe and correct me if im wrong. if you report a phone lost or stolen thats when there is a problem.i have a tmobile phone right now which is working with at&t.so as long as its a gsm phone and you can unlock
it then your good to go.i just bought a s3 off swappa then unlocked with cellunlocker.net for 25 and just popped my sim in and i was good to go.
hope this helps.
I don't get that business model. What is stopping people then from buying phones on contract for $50 and using them on another carrier after unlocking it for $25? Or is the contract obligations so binding in US that people don't ever break their contracts? How does it work there?

well to be honest it has to do with credit and your credit line,if you buy a phone with a contract and you break and or dont pay your bill then it will go to collections and that in turn affects your credit as far as getting credit cards or anything for that matter that involves anything having to do with credit,of course some people just dont care but for the majority it is better for them to pay the bill or to pay to get out of the contract as in an early termination fee. hope this helps

Oh okay. So the only worry is if people buy the phones and claim that it had been lost (and the insurance) but sell them off internationally. This way the phone will work everywhere except in US where it will blacklisted.
But then, will insurance and/or the police insist on seeing the box? If so, insisting on getting the phone with the box would technically make sure that the phone is not stolen and/or blacklisted right?

im afraid things work differently over here, not the police or the company really have time or care about a phone.insurance is just that ,if you have it then they will give you another and register the phones imei as bad and will be flagged as bad and will not work with the company you buy it from but if it is a gsm phone more than likely it will work unlocked with other companies ,now having said that if you want a phone that will work with at&t or any other carrier that are gsm then may plz recommend this website, swappa.com i have purchased several phones from them and never had a problem i would recommend buying at&t phone or a tmobile phone and if it is not unlocked then you can unlock the phone at cellunlocker.net which i have used as well and can verify that they give good unlock codes ,within 5 to 10 min, also swappa only deals with paypal so if the phones imei no. for some reason is not right even though they check it before hand and or the phone is not in the condition they said it was you are protected under there buyer protection program which means if need be they can refund your money.
Thanks. I had already been through Swappa. Unfortunately, it seems like most of the sellers do not ship internationally.

The way it works with AT&T here is that you may get a $500 phone for $100 with a two year contract, but a stipulation of the contract is a $350 declining early contract termination fee. That way they're covered if you do decide to take it elsewhere. If a phone is blacklisted, it will fry your sim card almost immediately when you try to use it in that phone. Keep in mind, I'm an employee but not speaking on behalf of the company, just trying to be helpful and shed some light on things.

[Q] Warranty when buying Z1 in another country?

Greetings!
I couldn't wait for the C6906 and I was too impatient, so I ordered a C6903 which should fill all my T-mobile needs anyhow. I don't know why I didn't even think of this, but will I have a warranty on this? I ordered it from Hong Kong (I believe) and I am in the United States. The seller says they offer a one year warranty, but what about Sony? I highly doubt any electronics reseller would be able to repair anything intricate on a device like this, so am I out of luck on Sony's warranty? I tried looking up their international warranty and the closest I could find was another forum post stating that the device has to be sent back to Hong Kong if it needs repair.
I haven't even gotten the phone yet, so I don't want to plan for the worst per se, but I am concerned nonetheless. Do any of you have experience buying these "imported" versions with Sony?
Thanks so much!

Collin check the sony store in us they have it on pre order already. Or tmobile will be getting the z1 soon as well as they are releasing the c6906 in Canada today (should be)

Yeah I saw that, but I think it's the HSPA+ model (C6902) which makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever. I got excited when I saw the preorder today and was hoping it was the C6906, but no dice. I now worry that it will be the same as the Z - the LTE version will be a T-mobile exclusive in the US. That's fine because I have T-mobile, but I always prefer an unbranded non-carrier phone of course
Anyway, thanks! I think I'll send an email to Sony to ask about the warranty.
-Collin-
Well, if I trust the chat representative (which we know, are always 100% accurate ) then it appears the phone has an international warranty.
Chris Tompkins: Hi Collin, thanks for choosing Sony Xperia™ Chat Support. My name is Chris. Would you please provide me with your full name and email address?
Collin: Collin xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Collin: please do not sign me up to receive emails, though
Chris Tompkins: Thank you. What is the model of your device and your service provider?
Collin: I purchased the C6903
Collin: unlocked
Chris Tompkins: As I see in my system the device have a warranty but keep in ind the phone repair doesn't have an estimate time for repair, since the service ccenter will need to request the parts to fix it.
Collin: Okay, there's nothing wrong with the phone and I do not need warranty service right now. My question is just whether or not the phone has an international warranty since I ordered it from Hong Kong, but I live in the United States.
Chris Tompkins: Have I answered all of your questions today or is there anything else I can help you with?
Collin: can you confirm that the phone has an international warranty?
Chris Tompkins: The phone have a warranty as long is not physical, water or system tamper damage. The service facility can fix the phone under warranty it doesn't matter from where it came from.
Collin: okay that answers my question, thank you for your time.

Hey this may be a solution: get insurance on the phone.
Here in the UK phone insurance is cheapest through your bank, in my case Amex is insuring all my portable electronics for a modest sum.
If it breaks it's covered - so no need to worry about the warranty.
Be sure to check the fine print of your policy or even call the company to ask if you'd be covered.
If you have an expensive phone like this insurance is a good bet anyway...

That's a great idea, actually. Here in the States, the big one is "Square Trade" I think. I used PayPal to buy the phone - should have used my Amex!

Wel im surprised, I ordered mine from Amazon instead and they give me til november to return it If i dont like it, with 0 penalties like 20% restocking fee from gsmnation, so far the best deal I got, since shipping for 1 day since I got prime cost me 3.99, cant beat that for 1 day shipping. Im impressed so far, the only issue is with of course spotty network, since in the US I get LTE in some areas, yet not as fast as any LTE phones I had before.
I emailed Sony asking if i had warranty if i buy a phone from ebay from an international seller and this is the response I got back...
Dear
Thank you for contacting Sony Xperia™ Online Support.
We apologize for the delay of our response. In regards to your inquiry, you have a 1 year warranty, however, please keep in mind that any impact or water damage as well as software alteration may void the 1 year repair warranty of your phone, the time frame for the repair is about 14 business days for US and Canadian models and indefinite time for international models, and in case the phone is out of warranty there is a cost.
As part of Sony Mobile's commitment to excellent customer service, we offer a wide variety of mobile products to suit your lifestyle. If you require more information, or have any other questions, please visit [sony website] or call us at 1-866-766-9374.
Kind Regards,

So much for the waterproof warranty. They wrote you a very slick e-mail. They didn't even write what the z1 user manual says - "... if water is detected behind the flaps ... the warranty is voided ... "
What if water gets in through the speaker or through the audio jack?

C6903 insurance in the US?

Hey guys, I've got a question for those of you who have purchased the Z1 (C6903) for T-mobile. Where is it possible to get this thing insured? I've tried going online to various electronics' insurance company's (e. g. Square Trade) but they don't have it listed as an option. Does ANYBODY cover unlocked international phones?

I called tmo and told them I got a new phone and they insured it. 7$/mo. They insure phones that you bring from other carriers too. They'll insure any phone. Love tmo!

Try contacting SquareTrade directly. They have covered several unlisted, "miscellaneous" gadgets that I have bought. (They also pro-rate the policy and apply the unused premium if you sell the gadget or upgrade to something else).
As for T-mobile, I'm a 15+ year customer, currently using my FOURTH (overnight) replacement HTC Sensation 4g in two+ years... I am patiently waiting for them to offer the z1! I really hope that the z1 hardware is better, but knowing that I can get a quick (like overnight via UPS) replacement of one their stock phones seems : priceless: (As part of my research, I called Sony to ask about repair/replacement times in the US if I bought one from their website, and they said 4-5 days). I'm trying to be patient!

SIM Unlock for Experia T/TL (Expensive)

Why is SIM Unlock for Experia T/TL so dam expensive? I had to pay $40 to get it unlocked to give my phone to someone.. I did my LG Optimus G and LG G2 for $1.90 each. Why the F is Experia phone is so expensive to unlock?
All phones cost money to SIM unlock, sometimes depending on how long your contract is. This has nothing to do with the manufacturer, but rather your provider.

Not sure what you are talking about... LGG2 Is was much newer than than my OLD Sony TL. I paid $2 for LGG2 online for the same provider (AT&T) and from the SAME Site/ Other sites its very expensive to SIM Unlock SONY TL. IT HAS NOTHING TO WITH PROVIDER.
I must have misunderstood, no need to shout!
Where I live it is illegal to SIM unlock your phone, unless you're out of contract, but in that case, the provider to which it is locked does it for free. So, I wasn't considering the possibility of purchasing an unlock from a website.
Might it be popularity of phone that influences prize?

You are buying an unlocking service from a wesite, and then come here to asked why they are so expensive?
Mad Marty, to my knowledge it is nowhere in the world legal to unlock a phone without the contract being ended.

There is no law saying that sim unlocking is a felony so it's not illegal, it's only a way how providers force you to use their sevices.
With iPhone, even if your contract is expired, you need to pay the full price to unlock it from carrier.

I apologize if you thought I was shouting... (may be i was not in a good mood that day paying $40) But anyway I was just wondering why its so expensive. for some phones these sites have some kinda app which will generate the code based on IMIE (Which will be cheap and mostly Instant E.g. lg g2 and most LG phones). But for other phones they actually submit the query's to AT&T/Carrier (where the phones is locked to) in bulk twice a week and get results of unlock codes in 3 to 5 business days (depends when you ask for it). So its Not illegal. I did unlock the phones before using both methods (through 3rd party) but never paid $40.. It was max $10. Anyway I just wanted to know if Sony phones have more sophisticated Software (for SIM part of the phone) than other phones.

Best Buy warranty transfer?

So I bought the S6 Edge for Verizon at best buy on launch day.. Because I was doing the Verizon edge I also purchased the warranty through best buy...
I'm now switching to T-Mobile and I'm purchasing the regular S6, however, I'm getting it through T-Mobile. I'm not sure if it's possible, and I don't think it is since I'm purchasing the phone directly through T-Mobile, but wanting to know if my best buy warranty would transfer to the new phone..

Did you purchase the Geek Squad Protection outright at the $169.99/$199.99 price? Or did you do the $10.99 monthly with lost & theft? Or the $7.99 monthly for accidental only? Either way, it will NOT transfer over to the T-Mobile phone, it is only for that phone you purchased at Best Buy. If you purchased the monthly, call Geek Squad (1800-Geek Squad) and you can cancel it. If you purchased the protection plan outright, you can go and do a pro-rated refund for the 3 months and two weeks that you used it.
