[Q] Will Verizon exclusivity have a huge impact on the Droid Turbo's dev community? - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

This phone has awesome specs, 5.2 inches is a more reasonable screen size than 6 inches (for me), and the outright price is $100 less than the Nexus 6.
It has everything going for it except it will contain all the VZW bloatware and will of course be locked down like crazy. Because it is a Verizon exclusive, the devs will be limited by ¾ (no Sprint, T-Mobile, or ATT devs) and that leaves me to question is the phone worth the lack of development that Verizon exclusivity creates? By comparison the Nexus 6 is one model for all carriers and is practically guaranteed to have a huge developer community.
If you have your mind set on either the Droid Turbo or the Nexus 6, what are your reasons for selecting that particular phone in regards to your speculations of the future developer communities among all the other reasons?

Maybe? Anyone who tells you a definite answer is simply guessing. You can go check out the other "droid" forums here on Xda to see if they were affected.
Myself I couldn't care less about rooting or flashing ROMs, I'm getting the phone since it's a damn beast of a device

It all depends. I had the DROID DNA which was also a Verizon exclusive and wasn't promoted too much. It had great dev support within a few months. I've had an unlocked bootloader and root for awhile. Then again, it was an HTC device.

What for do you need the developers for this beast phone anyways...

i can tell from experience last year droid maxx, the software was so fast and cool that i never missed any custom rom, because you would lose active notificacions and ok google now function, i even debloated the stock droid maxx rom and released it for dev devices and it was even faster, i can live with stock rom, but root its necessary, so as long we get root for this one im cool.

All I know is people are pist this phone came out after they upgraded. This is the first time i get a phone beyond my expectations.

In general a Nexus is easy to unlock and develop for and a Verizon branded phone is difficult to. That's not to say the Turbo won't have development or get unlocked though. It's definitely possible but more difficult. I bet there will be some big developers for this device so we'll see. IMO if you can deal with a huge phablet then definitely go with a Nexus over this. I personally just can't walk around with that big of a device.

The galaxy nexus (vzw only model) had insane dev support. I don't think the exclusivity will be the issue as much as the difficulty to unlock it.

Yeah, i thought it was pretty bunk that he made a "worlds first" out of it when I loaded the bootloaders onto my phone about a full day before he got involved.

You better be getting a slice of that $40 pie he is selling. Honestly, I think that is absolute garbage. This guy is taking advantage of many users offering what should be a donation service because of the work you and others have done.

Now Mobiletechvideos provides a professional grade, top notch technical service. He runs a business and that's his source of income. We text each other for technical advice once in a while. Even if I wanted to, I could not possibly keep up with his workload and do my own job as a hospital electronics technician. We have a deal worked out where he will eventually buy Rebellos a replacement phone via PayPal donations. He's a guy running a business. I look at the business aspect as a downfall of his ability to support himself with technical expertise. All I'm saying is technically its not a worlds first as Android isn't booted and I was running the bootloaders first.

[Q] First Thread When Will it Get JB ?

I follow you, I think it's safe to say that JB will always be an acronym for jelly bean on android forums.
I think:
+ the skin isn't too heavy.
+ Googlora (googorola? how do people spell that?). Moto should hopefully do better than most with software updates.
+ No hardware buttons to reconfigure
+ Motorola desperately needs some good publicity. A little over a year ago, Moto was the company that released the first major dual core android device (not counting G2X), and was seen as innovative because of webtop. These days, Motorola hardly even enters the conversation.
but,
- The phone was JUST released. I bet we'll see an OTA update or two, or maybe even three, before JB comes around.
- I don't think this will be hugely popular. It COULD be, because it has amazing hardware, and for the subsidized crowd, $99 is a steal. But right now, with such little press, I sorta doubt it. The smaller the user base, the lower it will be on the list of priorities.
- Until bootloader is unlocked, we're can't do it ourselves.
If I had to guess, I would say October or November, but that's just a guess.
I think we can expect to see a JB update much earlier. It really isn't that much different from ICS. I've used CM9 and CM10, I know that they are not official, but the difference isn't too great.
You guys are guessing October/November to get a JB update?
I promise you this update will not come before next spring! Google will do itself a great injustice if it favors Motorola in the least and with such large clients as HTC and Samsung, that's the last thing Google wants to do as it will certainly strain relationships if not end them. Motorola hasn't even upgraded the Atrix 2 with ICS yet and it's been out for what, 9 months? Moto will not jump to the front of the line for updates now that Google owns it, trust that, they may still get JB on the AHD but it's gonna take some time.
Awesome?
Motorola “Unlock My Device” Website goes live
Go Ahead and search this on Google as I am not allowed to post links yet
Found this today. I believe it is good news for custom roms and we will not have to wait for official updates :good:

Isn't it awesome that custom roms can come with devices
Do you ever think a rom like Paranoid or Cyanogenmod could be cold with a pre-rooted phone?
also, for a custom rom phone to be targeted (and sold) at British/American/English speaking country?
The cool thing is, according to cnet's bench mark tests, this phone is more powerful then the S3 or One x!!
I don't like MIUI particuarlly but the idea is pretty awesome
Pics =D

Also
There is a problem with this phone being sold in America/Europe

Unless i'm missing something obvious, the Xiaomi Mi-One was the first MIUI Phone with the Mi-Two being the second? Anyway, wish these could be bought here, and in English, as i really like the MIUI style and the specs are pretty decent. I'm not sure that i'd be confident in build quality or after-sales care though.
The concept of having a custom ROM phone is a bit moot with Android though. How is a HTC phone with Sense Android, or a Samsung phone with Touchwiz Android, any different from a Xiaomi phone with MIUI Android?
lol
Well, makes sense. I never heard of the one though. I still find it interesting how it is supposedly better than the one x or s3
Why would anyone buy a one x or s3 when this is cheaper (in China where it is sold)

Probably because being cheap is usually the opposite of quality and last-ability. Also, when my phone breaks I return it to my provider or manufacturer by giving it to the driver that brings me a new one the next day. Good luck doing that with one of these.

I guess because sense/wiz only comes with phones (in theory) whilst MIUI was first a ROM and I'm pretty sure is open source.
Men, maybe I'm just overexcited by a cheap powerphone
But do you think they OEM lock the phone, or is it prerooted or nexus like (in rooting method)?

Samsung noticed my Complaint thread and contacted me lol

I love the 90s. Good times.
What's that saying about honey, vinegar and bees
not sure why we should care about this.
if you wanted svdo then why buy an s4? the specs were released at least a month in advance.
man.. i really wish i had a custom SGS4 with my avatar on it....
i figure if samsung is watching then i might as well ask
I thought manufactures aren't supposed to post/monitor these sites. Although I'm sure they very well due, I swear I heard that a long time ago. Either way, too funny

I think its great they would reach out to someone like that. Of course its something they have no control over... when its a real bug we never hear anything.

I'm sure they monitor them, but it's not smart for them to post on them as they get ripped by someone no matter what they say. Kind of like the example in the OP above. I'm betting that support person will not be reaching out to anyone again anytime soon!
Its a shame really, they used to have developer relations and tried to reach out to the community with samsungjohn. however its just too much for one person and needs a whole team, we had kernel sources, responses from samsung and just a better connection with them.
its when samsung really took off in the rooting community.
I really miss this feature from the sgs3. It's too bad they cheaped out on us

If Sprint's LTE was anywhere as robust as their 3G (which in itself is not saying much) then this would not be much of an issue, but it's not.
Sometimes you wonder why they make such bone-headed decisions. Why couldn't they just leave the SVDO support in there. I doubt they can point to some incompatibility issue with anything like CPU or SoC or physical design etc..
OP is funny?
SVDO exclusion is almost certainly a Sprint decision, as no other phone besides the s3 and ltevo had it, or will have it.
And referencing T-mobile LTE? really? Missed that announcement where their LTE network is magically complete

More marketing?

Is google about to mass market this nexus 6? I have seen tons of android and google now commercials the last few months. And have seen them a lot. And all over the world series. Who else thinks this phone will be mass marketed on a Samsung level?

Notice that you have seen advertising for ANDROID and GOOGLE NOW. Google is pushing their software and respective services b/c that's where they make their money. Whereas Samsung, LG, HTC and others are pushing their hardware while trying to emphasize their own software implementations. Don't get me wrong nothing would get me more hype than a giant Nexus 6 billboard but, as we've seen with past Nexi, that's not going go happen...
I see your point. I just feel with it going to all carriers and the flagship price they could really advertise. Time will tell though.

You'd think they would push it since it is being distributed to all carriers. I agree that they should push it and really get the Nexus name out there. I'm tired of being asked if my phone is a “Droid" or a “Galaxy." Let's be honest though, if Google did start advertising; they have A LOT of catching up to do!

Yep. I know the feeling. People look at me funny when I say it i have a nexus. With pride. Lol. But if anyone can catch up. It would be the billion dollar advertisement company. I sure hope they go for it. Sad when I walked into t mobile and all they want to do is sell you a Samsung. No matter how set you are on a device made for your needs. $$$$

I say they are marketing it, far more than they have ever done so before. They really REALLY seem to have something here with their current campaign and want to get it out there as much as possible (which is awesome, because I find this new campaign to be really cool and good spirited).
Even a few of the new android commercials have shown off the Nexus 6 whether it be a glimpse or the subject manner. It seems this time around with 5.0 Lollipop Google is going FULL FORCE on getting positive android appeal in the open market. Unlike before we are approaching something new and potentially great here for the community.
