Info from sdcard to Nexus 6 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So during the long eons between ordering my 64gb Midnight blue Nexus 6 and its actual delivery I am in pondering mode:
Best way to transfer the info & files from my GS4 sdcard to Nexus 6?
1. Connect GS4 to PC, drag 'n drop to pc file. Connect Nexus 6 to PC & reverse d&d?
2. Remove sdcard from GS4 & put into card reader connected to PC & do the d&d thing.
3. Card Reader for micro usb plugged into Nexus 6 & move the files into internal memory.
4. Is there a direct phone to phone method that won't take forever? If so, what?

Lolipop apparently has a new system to move content from your old phone to your new one via tapping them together (NFC). Not sure how it actually works, though - probably sets up a P2P share via WiFi and moves things that way.
In my opinion, the best way is the simplest: tether old phone to a PC then back up, tether new phone to PC and restore. You will not be able to get everything that way (texts, for example, aren't easy to move unless you are using something like Hangouts as your SMS app), but it will work for most things. And, of course, keeping as much stuff on the cloud to begin with is a good way to start; photos/music/docs, etc can just be pulled down from GDrive/OneDrive/DropBox/etc as needed.

I plan on using my < $1 OTG cable and an SD card reader.

Pretty sure the new transfer thing is lollipop to lollipop only.

Thanks for the info, guys.
Wifi direct and NFC are in kit kat, pretty sure. Someone mentioned an app called Super beam that is supposed to organize & facilitate the process.
In my experience wired communication has been faster than a wireless one. But the PC method takes two transfers. ...to pc & then back to the other phone. So the wifi direct method could be just as fast.
The otg cable & card reader sounds as if it might be the fastest since only a single, wired transfer is involved.
That said, I guess priority should be given to ease of use. Preserving the file / folder structure and being able to set up the whole thing as a batch operation would be paramount.

Nope ... It utilizes your google account to go and grab apps and setup from previous devices, plus if you use NFC it will use that to read the other phone. There have been several reviews and videos on it already.

ES File Explorer let's you transfer files phone to phone via WiFi. I'd imagine that putting it in a micro USB reader like the meenova would be faster though.

I backup all my stuff on OneDrive and Google Drive. All the app will be download when I activate the phone so no need to worry on that.

So what backup app do you use for this.
I know that Titanium doesn't back up personal data like pictures, music, documents etc

For personal data, I backup my photo on the cloud drive same with document. I usually load my music from my computer using iSyncr so no need to worry about personal data
I rarely put any important stuff on my phone only because I'm screw if i lost my phone
One way i get my stuff backup is set the directory on the cloud drive to backup. Not sure if Google Drive does it but I'm using OneDrive to backup all my photo directory
Sent from my SCH-I545 using XDA Free mobile app

I backup texts using SMS Backup & Restore.

If you want to keep using the card as well, you can always do something like this.

Titanium backup across multiple android devices

I have been playing around with trying to make a Titanium backup of my phone's apps and data that can easily be moved over to the g tablet. I currently have been
making the backup
swapping the sd card
copying files from sdcard2/TitaniumBackup to sdcard/TitaniumBackup then batch restoring the apps and files.
I will play around to see if this process could be easier, possibly automated.
I'll keep you posted.
Anyone else working on this or have any alternative solution?
Check out the Titanium Backup sync to Dropbox feature, you might be able to configure it in a way that would accomplish your goal.
I have set up dropbox sync, but uploading/downloading takes quite some time. I started another thread about how I would like to be able to connect my DX to the G tablet via usb. If I could get that to work transfering files would be faster and I wouldn't have to swap sdcards all the time.
I just found a post about using an app called aFileSync. http://www.androidzoom.com/android_applications/tools/afilesync_nxn.html I'll try to play around with it and see if it works. If I can get it to work well, I will write up a FAQ.
I just would really like to be able to keep all my app settings/savestates/etc from my phone and my tablet.

FTP works well over a good wifi connection...that is what I use for transfers to / from PC
Astro also has a SMB module that I use when I want to access files on network shares
Update:
I have got my data to go across both my DX and Gtablet.
I made a label for all the apps (mostly games) that I want to backup. Backup on titanium. Sync to dropbox. On the other device I open dropbox, download the titanium files, move the files into my /sdcard/TitaniumBackup, open titanium and restore. It takes less than a minute to complete.
It isn't automated like I would have originally hoped, but at least it works!

Thanks to MTP, Cannot see all files on SD from PC

EDIT: Re-editing my post to remove the rant.
Basically, MTP ignores folders with .nomedia files in them... very short sighted.
Just wondering if there are any good alternatives out there, and what people prefer, other than just rebooting to recovery to mount USB?
I use wireless transfer apps like Samba. You can set it up on your network and browse the touchpad just like another directory.

True, that does work. I have been using Android Commander, which freezes sometimes... and doesn't like to connect over USB, so I have to use WiFi.
I guess what I'm hoping for is something that will work over USB which is a little faster for transfers than WiFi, which can be pretty slow for larger files.
The reason MTP ignores other files is because it stands for Media Transfer Protocol.

Yeah, I think I'm smart enough to figure that out.
Don't care. It is insufficient, because it makes it very difficult to manage the SD Card as a filesystem, forcing use of 3rd party utilities. I've heard all of Google's excuses for ending support of USB Mass Storage mode, but in the end, they did not give us a workable alternative.
The reason I use a .nomedia file is because I'd rather not have thousands of images from manga/comics, etc, show up in my Gallery app.

Well i don't know how smart you are and was just trying to be helpful ,its not often I get told for trying . I will try to be more careful/refrain before offering any advice in the future.
I use FTP to transfer files from PC to my touchpad vise versa first install ES file explorer from Play Store, go to settings> remote settings> turn on remote manage> set the parameters
Use filezilla on your PC to enter the IP add of your touchpad>quick connect and you can access your tablet files
I use Android Sync Manager over WiFi (Free in the Play Store and a free download for the PC) which lets me transfer back & forth over a WiFi network connection.
OK I will try again there is an app called USB Mass Storage Watcher. I have just installed it and put a tick in Mount mass storage automatically. Now when I connect to my PC although the tablet says connected as media device when I open the USB SD card on my computer I am able to see all files and tested by transferring a 1.3 g backup file to my desktop.
Maybe this helps ?

Why I hate MTP

Just updated to KitKat and connected my Nexus to the PC. Found a curious folder named storage, it was empty.
I thought maybe some app created this folder, so I deleted it. BAMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!
My SDcard is free from all this unnecessary stuff, like photos, music and what else Android thought I didn't need anymore.
So what I want to say is just don't delete any "empty" folder on your sdcard
Take care
PS: I hate MTP, google shouldn't have used it in android
Of course you have all that stuff backed up....!?

Come on, just don't delete stuff. MTP is not a problem, it ensures ext4 compatibility with different desktops.

nope :silly: but I love the auto backup tools from google+ and dropbox, so it's not that bad, it just really annoying and bugs me

The same happened to me last weekend. Luckily I had all my apps backed up daily with Titanium Backup to Box.net and my photos with Dropbox. The positive outcome for me was that I finally got allot of disk space back that I wouldn't have manged myself.
You don't want the solution like on USB sticks. For starters, FAT is extremely inefficient compared to EXT3/4 and if phone storage size keeps expanding we will hit a brick wall that FAT can't handle, then what? NTFS? NTFS works on *nix just fine but it is even more inefficient than FAT since it's all reverse engineered which might also cause issues with licensing.
MTP just needs some maturing. It's a little buggy under Linux but other than an occasional odd error message (it's very beta) transferring media it works just fine.

Because of maturity and some other factors I use FTP to transfer files, not MTP. It's wireless, fast and easy ^_^.

for some, MTP does not work well under windows environment..
unfortunately im one of them.. (and "hate" is quite an accurate description of my actual feeling in this matter)
now im mostly using samba to transfer files between phone and pc..
I came to realize that if I ever find the need to extract or backup or move files from my phone, always use the darn Nexus ToolKit. I use to for any device as long as the ADB is recognized.
Its glitchy, it once had my Titanium folder as an file instead of a folder. I was super picky and hawkish on deleting stuff on my Nexus 4 because its 16gb. Now on Nexus 5, 32gb I tend to not give a dam.
It is annoying
MTP is slow, only shows Image Thumbnails in the DCIM (or something) Folder and is not meant to be used for Multitasking.
I had the EXACT same problem.
Just wanted to clean my internal storage, deleted the Folder and bam ... everything gone.
Lost about 2 months of Images and ... yea, seriously sucks.
Got point about that, I got enough space again
I did that once too.
It is really confusing for average users.
Also, it is slow and not detecting all files most of the time.
Yes I know it can be fixed by rescanning media or rebooting the phone, but then again this is so trouble and average users would just assumed that they can plug in the phone to pc and use it.

How to get my text and photos from Samsung Device

Hello All,
Just got the Nexus 6 coming from the Note 2, need to know the easiest way to get my text messages and photos from that device. I tried the NFC tap thing but if does not seem to work?
Photos.... copy them onto your computer and then paste them onto your Nexus 6.
Text.... use whatever SMS backup app you want, Titanium Backup has one. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore is another one.
Really you mean we still have to transfer files to our computer first to transfer, thats so old school to me. This was so much easier on the Note 4 with Smart Swap and somehow all my text got transferred automatically with the Note 4 too. I still like this Nexus though.
Use Helium it works great for not rooted users. Allows u to transfer data from apps such as angry birds, cut the rope, subway surfers, and any other app that doesn't backup to Facebook or Google+. However u need a PC with a very small program installed plus USB drivers to enable backup for non rooted users. Titanium is for rooted users only but works great also.
I Sync photos with g+ and backup text messages/app data with titanium backup. A USB OTG cable works well to transport the data from one device to another. If no access to USB OTG I use a PC.
Just make sure you unlock the boot loader before moving files to the new device as it wipes your device. Not a bad idea to flash a decrypted kernel as this will wipe your device also.

Its the fastest way of transferring files from 1 place to the next especially if you have a lot of photos. Alternatively, you can upload them to the cloud and download them.

any way to back up without root?

im hoping to get my nexus rooted eventually, but im not quite ready.
Id like to use the phone meanwhile tho, and i read once i want to root it'll wipe my phone.

Root doesn't wipe media / personal files. Unlocking or relocking the bootloader or decrypting the data will, however.
List out exactly what you want backed up, and you may find that many of them (if not most) are already backed up on the cloud. For the ones that aren't backed up, you may have an option to back up the settings and export to dropbox/copy etc
If you find that you have apps where app-data is not being backed up and you actually need that app-data, look at Helium app for backing up
ADB Backup
You can also use the "adb backup -f BACKUP.ab -apk -shared -all" command to backup all your apps and their data, also including the internal memory (everything under /storage/emulated/0/).
-apk backups up the binaries
-shared backups up your internal storage
-all, backups up all data!

To transfer that amount of data, cloud storage may be a little slow. You could just transfer the data to your PC, and then, transfer to N6 using a USB cable.

So you're saying my best choice is just to keep my stuff on my computer till after the nexus is rooted?
I guess I can do that, I do listen to music a lot but I can probably just use groove shark meanwhile.
I don't have any games yet, but once I'm rooted titanium should back up my save files right?

Why not root your Nexus 6 right now, and then, transfer data over from your old phone (using computer as the middle man? Also, depending on how much of that data is music, you may be able to upload it into your Google Music account. Personally, I like to have at least two copies of all my data (one backup, one active) at all times, so you may want to push your collection to some type of cloud storage (dropbox/box/copy/onedrive etc).
Once you root, yes, Titanium backup should be able to save your game progress (check to see if the games are Play-games enabled - if so, your game progress will be stored to the cloud directly, and you don't need to perform titanium backups)

Because i still have to learn how, this is the first phone im going to mess with
Things id like are
●get rid of the enxryption
●make my phone less burn in-able
●have to most up to date software
● get some of the moto x features
I wanted multi window too but i guess i need to wait for that exposed program to be lollipop compatible
Without root there's adb backup, but doesn't work well. Remember to use the -apk option and before restoring install all the apps from play store first. Titanium backup is much better regarding that matter. Some games allow to use Google Saved Games so you can sync savegames between different devices.
