Moto's Touchless Control vs Google Voice Search 5.0 - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What do you guys prefer? What have you been using?
Have you noticed anything that one has and the other doesn't? I've noticed that Motorola's implementation just opens up Google and therefore it seems to be a little bit of a slower solution.
What do you guys think?

It opens Google for commands that the Moto app doesn't handle itself. So it can be a bit slower but the Lollipop version is actually pretty fast compared to the KK version.

I still use moto because I like the hands free stuff at home and in the car. But yes, simple things like "what's the weather like" and "what time is it" takes a lot longer.

Do I have a choice? Is it possible to replace the motorola version with the google version and still have the 'always listening' capability?

You can disable the Moto app in favor of the Google version but you will lose always listening unless you're plugged in.

No you can now have Google Now on always listening even with the screen off and locked.

My Google Now app (on the Lollipop OTA) doesn't give me the option for always-on listening. How did you enable it?

Make sure you have the newest version and just "enable while screen is locked"

No go. You've apparently got a newer version than I do. Here's what my option says:
"When locked:
Allow "Ok Google" to start a voice search of action from a secure lock screen"
Did you install Search or the Now Launcher or some other libraries from APK mirror? Or did you just install the latest version from the play store?

Works from the lock screen, but it doesn't give you the ability to use it when the screen is powered off, unless it's just a problem with my phone. Only the Moto app seems to let me do that.

I literally just read an article today about the newest version of Google search and installed the apk. That could be it.

Thanks. Can you direct us to where you read the article and where you got the file?

After looking around, I'm not even sure this is possible. I know you say, zgroten, that you can search with the screen off, but are you _really_ sure you can do it while you're unplugged?
Google, in their blog post, listed only the "Nexus 6, Nexus 9 or Samsung Galaxy Note4" as phones capable of using always-on listening. They did not mention the Moto X 2014.

Yes in the new search it is always listening. The function works on several non moto phones as well.

Pimp****420, do you have a source for this? If it works for you, can tell/link us to how you got it working. We're on the latest Google search with the latest google now launcher and it doesn't work for us.

[Q] AT&T Moto X tap and pay

Quick question that I couldn't find a solid answer for. Does the Moto X att version allow Google wallet tap and pay on stock 4.4? I saw some other threads, but some people had indicated that you needed to side load a different version of wallet to get this function to work.
Thanks for the help.
Actually, all you have to do is install the Google Wallet app from the play store and Tap & Pay should be working just fine. Just read this somewhere, I'm not completely sure though so feel free to correct me.
Yes it's there. You just need to make sure your NFC is on to activate it.

What are you trying to use it through? I have tried the option under settings>display but I guess this option is only for DLNA devices. I saw there was a mirroring app but since I have verizon I do not currently have root with this device.
Please let me know if you get it to screen cast because I've also been searching around for a bit.

I can obviously do it with things like Netflix and Hulu.
What I want it for is Amazon instant video. As it doesn't support Chromecast.
I guess the Nexus 4 and some other devices can mirror their screen with A Chromecast. But I guess not the X.
I'm on Verizon as well.
Google hasnt enabled this option for the Moto X yet. The only devices with this working right now are Galaxy Flagship phones, Nexus lineup and HTC One M8. I dont know why they didnt enable it for us. We will have to wait for Lollipop (which comes with this enabled by default). It is a server side thing, so there is nothing you can do right now
If you have root, you can try this:

Confirmed working on Moto X 2014.

Upgraded to lollipop on my VZW X and cast to screen doesn't work even though it's showing in quick settings. Netflix, Google play movies etc. work but not cast to screen.
It works perfectly on my N7. Did VZW cripple it or is it just a matter of an app update?

I get FC's when I use it. I had to reboot after trying the "paranoid android" theme. Does anyone else have this issue with the app? I'm running LS 12/23 build currently. Interesting. I bought it too and it does not work for me. Stock 5.0.1 too. I can turn the volume down but once it's down I can't turn it back up unless I uninstall.
Plus I kinda like the priority all etc on the stock volume bar.
Would be awesome if one of the devs could make a flash-able or pushable expanded volume bar though that looks like the stock one, but just extend it out so it had all the volume sliders. Would donate for that for sure!

You can do what you're asking without the app: Settings --> Sound & notification will allow you to max the alarm volume and lower it for everything else.
As far as how to use Noyze, first make sure that you open the app and turn it on, as well as allow it in accessibility. This video can explain the app usage to you better: http://lifehacker.com/noyze-customizes-everything-about-your-androids-volume-1637604843

Now that Moto is making a version of the Nexus 6 but with their software for China will it be possible to port moto assist/moto voice and display? No, the Moto ones are much better. Goto a carrier store and try Moto voice and display and then let me know if you still think they are the same. Ambient display isn't as good as the Moto one, and google now is nice (and used with moto voice) but you can't use custom commands with it.
My favorite thing about my wife's moto x is to be able to twist the phone twice to activate the camera. Theres some other cool features she has that I don't but that is by far my favorite

The twist to activate camera is cool, I really like the moto display because its a better version of the ambient display on the Nexus even though the Moto has both. I wouldn't trade my Nexus for the Moto, I just want the Moto tweaks. I do like the voice commands and how you can make up any phrase to activate it (which can be funny sometimes depending on what you use)

Most of the internet agrees that ambient display is far nicer than motorola, actually showing you the notification instead of just the fact that there is one.
http://www.droid-life.com/2014/11/0...-display-is-a-very-cool-take-on-moto-display/
What they say about not being able to use sensors (proximity/IR/motion) to refresh the ambient display is.... not entirely true. AOSP 5 does have ALL of this provision in the source code, but it has to be activated with an appropriate sensor (if available).
As for custom commands with google now... you really should look into this more, since there *are* ways to do that with google now. For example, tasker with autovoice.
As far as the quality of voice dictation goes, the google implementation (which probably uses the same backend) is pretty solid... as far as voice recognition goes.

I understand where you are coming from but some people including myself prefer the Moto display. I don't care if I can't gesture over it, I just like the way the Moto Display looks compared to the ambient one. If it could work without the added sensors (which it will since the X Pro will likely have this) then I'm fine with that.
I know there are ways to implement the custom voice commands, however its more natural the way that its done on the X. I have tried some other alternatives but I wasn't a fan of them. The Nexus 6 has a low power chip for active listening if I recall correctly so this shouldn't be a issue if and when we can port those features over.
I also wouldn't say that the "majority of people prefer the ambient display" we can't generalize things like that because after all statistics can be very bias and wrong if they are not collected correctly. I have seen reviews including AP (android police) who stated they liked the Moto version better, but again its user preference.
I'm not saying you are wrong at all, I would just prefer the Moto tweaks on my Nexus phone because I like them.

I'm mostly on board with you. I like the ambient display looks vs moto display but I wish the screen wouldn't light up fully when interacting with the notification. In my opinion it totally defeats the purpose of having it black and white. Ambient display is inconsistent in which sometimes it doesn't come up. Moto display is the better functioning of the two.

Don't forget moto display with moto assist has a night mode which went light up the screen when you're sleeping or in a movie. Of course you could use priority notifications but this is more convenient in my opinion.

Neither removed it. You have to sign up with the community, then click on the link to join the beta, and wait for it to show up for you in the Play Store (some show up in minutes, one or two took over an hour to show up after joining both). This is how pretty much all of betas through the Play Store are handled. I just checked and put screenshots attached to this post.

It's on one of Google's developer sites and it's as awful as the first version released around November because it IS still the same version.
At Google IO they said they'd release a better one later this year.
