QI charging - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone confirm if infact QI charging works ?
In many reviews no one has spoken about QI charging, MKBHD's video says it does not work with the official QI charger from google.
Has anyone got it to work, or even confirm it has it apart from what the motorola site says.
No QI charging is a deal breaker for me

According to marques brownlee on YouTube, the wireless charging did NOT work with his nexus 5 charging pad. So don't know if the N6 needs a new charging pad or wireless charging was not included. But I recall moto website listing wireless charging as one of the features.

It's in the spec on the Play Store, so I'm surprised he said it doesn't work. Has there been some kind of update the the Qi standard?

Yes, I've seen it work just fine on another vid.
I think, clearly that small nexus 5 charging pad just isn't big enough for the coil inside the Nexus 6.

it's working in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXA6mpIsZTY&list=UUDt0iwnK2sPXaOyZhVmXIQw#t=258

It supports qi charging (look at the specs on the motorolla website).

This shows the charging coil on the back of the Nexus 6.

Anyone got it to work with the official Nexus charger ?

It works I just used it on my LG WCD-100 charger.

Here you go in case you don't believe me

Hope it works on the nexus charger. Google support page notes the nexus 6 - https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/6073618?hl=en

Guys id you read the original post i dud say apart frim where its written in the spec sheets.
MKBHD said he could not get it to work with the offical qi charger from google, i don't care what the specs say, he could not get it to work.
Can anyone confirm with a device and google QI charger that it works.

tried it last night and it does work with the Nexus 2013 Wireless Charger. It took me a while to find the spot on the back of the Phone.

The NFC and wireless charging receiver is a little lower than the middle of the device.... taking up the space around the "EXUS" on the back. Wireless charging DOES work, but there doesn't seem to be any magnets/magnetic discs around the receiver in the phone to help align the device on the charger.

Kinda of good news but when you placed the Nexus 6 onto the official Nexus wireless charging pad (attached) did it grip or slide off? Some pics would be great
Thanks a million,
Mark

My Nexus 6 is charging fine on the Nexus 4 Qi Orb.

magnets don't do anything unfortunately-

Part of the discrepancy lies with the placement of the coils in the Nexus 6. Since they're so low on the device, you can't center it on most wireless charging pads. For example, if you center it on the Samsung charging pad (which, since it's almost the same size, is probably what you'd do) it won't work, but slide the phone up about an inch and it works fine. This is probably what caused a lot of people to think that the Nexus 6 didn't work with most qi chargers. They simply didn't move it around until they found the sweet spot.
As for the Nexus Charger... well, it works, but since the magnets are FAR too weak to hold the Nexus 6 (unlike the Nexus 5, with its strong grip), it's really hard to get it just right so that it stays on the charger in the correct position. In short, while it works, the Nexus Charger is probably not your best bet. (Hopefully, they'll come out with a new model specifically designed for the N6.) Honestly, the one I've found to be easiest to find the sweet spot on, is the Nokia DT-910. Since it's a stand-up charger, the Nexus 6 fits perfectly, and automatically lines up just right. With all others, just remember that the sweet spot (which should be centered on the charger) is just BELOW the bottom of the volume rocker.

I got a Yes Digi Qi charger from Amazon (link). It works just fine with my G2. The first time I put it on it kept connecting/disconnecting the power rapidly, until I realized it has to sit up just a tad above being centered. I haven't had any problems since.
I haven't received my case yet (Incipio DualPro), so I don't know if it will work with it. I have, however, gotten it to charge through a stack of about 20 sheets of printer paper so I'm sure it'll be fine with a case.
Update: Just got my case yesterday. I can happily report that the charger works with the case. Yay!
Thanks! I will be receiving this as a gift. Hopefully it works...
www.amazon.com/Lerway-Wireless-Powe...dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1
Just received two of those ... they work great !
The LED is very good to tell you if the link is good. Easy to locate the good spot.
Charge pretty quick (VZW LG G2, Nexus 7 all with covers).
Nokia DT-900 Half-off
The Nokia DT-900 is currently half-off on att.com, if anyone's interested.
http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/accessories/chargers/sku6290260.html#fbid=Qec_2FFDzlV
The Nokia's look like they are small and thick. I'd like to see some pics of the Nokia with a G2.
The Lerway looks similar to my Samsung model except it lacks the LED, which I can do without. I'd spend $20 on a Qi Charger. Can't see spending $50+ though.
DERP!
Just watched a Youtube video and realized the Nokia DT-900 Qi Charger uses a stupid barrel plug for power. FAIL. Instant fail. I travel and love being able to take 1 wall adapter, 1 MicroUSB cable, and my Qi Charging plate and it lets me Qi Charge, or charge my headphones, or tablet, controllers, etc.
Not interested in a Qi Charger that requires its own power supply. I'd rather do the LerWay or try to find another Samsung for $24 (what I paid for mine).

That's pretty cool! Let us know if the 2.1A output will achieve fast charge. I just got a power bank and even with the 2A output it slow charges.
I don't think you're getting a fast charge with Qi. I think the transfer rate is super slow which is a limitation of the current technology.

This is a receiver that is charged from a charging pad, not a charging pad itself. Not sure if that was clear....

Does that charge as fast as a normal charger? I think wireless charging would be nice (though not really necessary) so if it works just as fast or faster i might get one but if not then i dont see the benefit for myself. Thanks

Whoops, sorry I took so long to respond. It's definitely slower than the wired charger that came with the G2. But on the other hand, I'm in and out of my office throughout the day, so it's nice to just pop it on when I'm in and let it sip some juice. It's usually full before noon, even with me putting it on and off. I don't charge it overnight so it gets down to about 30-40% depending on my use the rest of the previous day.

Wireless Charging metal pins for magnets?

Has anyone heard if the Nexus 6 will magnetically attach to the Qi chargers like the Nexus 5? I'm a little worried it won't because of the curve on the back. I'd really like to use it as a car mount.
I've been wondering the same thing and have not heard anything yet. I use the AirDock in my car with my Nexus 5 and I love it.

The Nexus 5 didn't do that for *all* Qi chargers, only specific ones. Most don't have the magnetic pins to hold phones.
That being said, nobody has any idea at this point whether the Nexus 6 will...but my guess is no.
Edit, sorry, posted in wrong thread.
I asked both Google and Motorola Customer Service if the Nexus 6 supported the magnets for aligning the charger. Neither customer service was able to answer the question unfortunately, but your mileage may vary.
Google now lists support for the Nexus 6 in the Nexus Charger documentation.
Device Placement
"Nexus 6: 2.5 inches (64mm) from the bottom of the device"
https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/6073618?hl=en
This might imply it has the metal pins, but does not explicitly state that it does. But that placement doesn't seem very balanced without some form of magnetic help.

Good catch. Yeah I would agree that it would have to have some kind of magnetic help. I just can't believe none of the early reviews or hands on videos have mentioned this. To me this is a pretty important feature

Sadly, wireless charging is just a footnote to most reviewers, especially in the US where most phones don't come with it without paying for an extra add-on item (either a case or a sticker for the inside of the phone). Most reviewers are either rushing to get the review out and didn't get said accessory, or don't own a charger so don't bother. Sad, really, because wireless charging is a feature that a lot of people would love if they knew it was there. In your car, especially, the ability to just stick your phone in the holder to both charge and secure it and use a bluetooth adapter for hands free/music playback is a REALLY nice feature. Less fiddling with wires feels like the future.

Yep! I'm getting ready to buy the Air Dock soon (after they announce the new one sometime this month) and then I will get the bluetooth adapter to do exactly what you are talking about
Should get the Airdock, it is great, but version 2 is coming soon with improved charging coil, among several other features. Either way, the Airdock is great, I have three!

I just finished this video. It better be working in mine. I use wireless charging all the freaking time. I would much rather have this than fast charge if I had to choose. But no, I haven't seen any reviews with it yet...

Got this from Reddit. This video shows the N6 on a Qi pad charging. From this and with Google's and Moto's pages showing Qi is supported I'm going to say that he must have had a bad unit.
I really expect to be able to use this with my airdock, ill be super dissapointed if the N6 doesnt have the metal plates for the magnets to grab....
Magnets on Nexus 6
They are either not there or are not activated by the Google qi charger from the play store like the Nexus 5 was.
One thing I will say, I have to set my n6 a bit more to the right than center to get it to connect and, more importantly, I set it on my qi pad at 11:30 the other night at 58%, woke up the next morning at 8am, 64%....... Very unsettling. Battery has been too dead every morning since to risk testing it again but my N7 charges just fine.

Nexus 6 Wireless Charging

So I know that people all say the 6 supports Qi wireless charging but in a youtube video review by Marques Brownlee, he said that the 6 won't charge when placed on a nexus wireless charging pad. I am wondering if anyone who's already got his 6 and a nexus wireless charging pad can try it out?
Yes I'd love to hear how it works, and about the magnet location.

I have a Powerbot, it works. Seems to be right in the center is where the spot is.
Edit: Actually it seems to be a little bit more towards the bottom. Here is a picture.
It works just fine lb by tylt vu and other generic chargers. It feels like it charges super slow though (I know it's s huge battery, but still feels extra slow). The quick charging is quite impressive though.
Woohoo! I have a DT-910 (the real model number that was incorrectly written as BT-910 in the screen shot). I was really worried that it wouldn't work with the N6 being so much taller. Unlike most wireless chargers, this stand-up dock won't exactly let you slide the phone down until you find the sweet spot. Thank you Moto/Google for thinking about this and placing the coils a bit below center!
There's another OP (4 actually) about this already please search before posting and yes qi works.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/qi-charging-t2941516
The charging coil is lower than one would expect: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/6102554?hl=en&ref_topic=3415470
I have the Nexus 5 wireless charging dock. Only downside i can see is that either there are no magnets/magnetic discs at all, or the curved back greatly diminishes the ability of the magnets in the dock to grab the phone... because there's very little resistance to it. My guess is it's only the magnets being attracted to something else in the phone. Nowhere near as glued to the charger as the Nexus 5 is. Probably the only thing that'll make me want to ditch the Nexus 5's wireless charging puck for something else.

Yeah, my friend got the Nexus 6 (one of the few to place an order) and he says his nexus 7 2013 qi wireless charger still works perfectly. He just has to place it DIRECTLY in the middle.

Fantastic mate! I have the same one (I think), I bought it directly from Google Play to charge my Nexus 5!
On a slightly different note I'm in Europe and my brother is in San Francisco. He is coming to Ireland next week and I want him to bring me a Nexus 6! I know I may run into issues with LTE but is there anything else I should be aware of? He will most likely buy it from T-Mobile in the USA, I think they are normally good in terms of phones not being locked etc.?
All the best,

Qi Issues

Is anyone finding that their phone doesn't charge wirelessly? I tried a total of 4 devices, and 2 qi chargers last night and every device worked correctly for each charger except for the N6. I saw a MBKHD vid of how he couldn't get Qi working, but have seen other vids with people doing it no issue. Are there some defective devices out there or something?

I tried that charger and another one. Held it to the back with my hand, and slowly started sliding it all over the back of the phone to attempt to find a sweet spot. It never worked for me. :crying:
I found the nexus 5 charger very difficult, and it will not charge with the Motorola turbo charging block powering it. You need to use a regular AC/DC adapter.
The Nexus 4 Orb charger works fairly well, you need to be a little careful with placement but surgical like precision is not necessary. I would not buy this charger for the n6, but since I have it I will use it at work.
I did buy a Nokia dt-910 last night. This charger is supposed to work well with the n6.

If I remember right, the Nexus Wireless Charger requires a 1.8A supply, and the Turbo charger is only 1.6A. That may be one issue. Another is that I'm pretty sure the Nexus charger determines the source type the same way Android phones do. In other words, it requires that the data pins be shorted together (otherwise, it assumes you're connected to a 500mA computer USB port). Use a standard "power only" cable (which doesn't have data wires at all), and it won't work. In either case... even when it does work, it's probably the worst charger for the N6. It was really designed to use those magnets for proper alignment, and without them, the N6, which has to be placed off-center, tends to fall off.
The Nokia DT-910 is probably one of the best chargers for the N6. Its only downfall is that it's a lower-amperage charger (I'm not at home to check, but I want to say 900mA-ish.) Still charges the N6 in a few hours though, so I've never really had an issue there.

I tried different cords, power blocks, and I even have a wall outlet in my house that has USB ports directly into the power.
My old wireless orb and a Zens charger seem to work fine. Maybe a tad warm when I pick up from charger.
Nexus 4 orb seems to work, although it's hard to balance the phone.

QI Wireless charging case.

As much as I love my 5x, it's not a patch on the Nexus5, for the single omission of QI wireless charging.
My Nexus5 never needed cables, a overnight charge in the wireless QI stand and it was good for the day. The 5x seems like a massive step backwards for me. Yes, it charges quickly, but I don't care, effectively I never needed to charge my Nexus5, just place it in the right location. I have gone from no charging to charging hassle.
Someone must be designing a QI case, they would be rich very quickly.
Even a USB-C QI pad to go in a regular bumper case.
I own an Air Dock 2.0 and loved it with my Nexus 5. I contacted them about a wireless charging option for the 5x and they eluded to them working on the issue. Below is a quote from them when asked about a Qi mod for the 5x
Hi Chuck,

The Qi usb type c receiver pad I mention in that post works fine if somewhat slow, I can't see them making an actual charging case though as case choice is very subjective.
