Google+ Photos as Gallery Replacement Sucks - Nexus 6 Themes and Apps

how the hell can you "select all" photos from this app? as it stands, if i take 50 photos, i need to go through one by one and select them to send them somewhere or move them? this is absurd.

I agree. Try piktures from the play store. That's a good gallery app

This is probably the one thing that made me say WTF. I'm going with cyanogenmod gallery from the play store.

Use quickpic it's like the stock gallery from KitKat

This is the thing that bugs me about Android. They got rid of perfectly good standalone apps and want to tie everything in with their services.
I don't want Play Music -- I want to go right to my songs and playlist with one click.
I don't want Photos App -- for the same reasons above.
I don't want Email to be bundled in with Gmail.
It's getting to the point where soon I will have to replace all of the built in apps with apps that simply work better.

QuickPic is defatenaly the way to go.. nice find!

Yep. Gallery, Messaging, Music Player and Browser are areas where OEM's like LG and Samsung, etc.., def have a major advantage over Google's Android decision and design team.

I just tap and hold on the first picture, then tap all the other pics I want to move. Then hit the share button

Quickpic is what I use. Cm gallery isn't half bad though

which is fine for 2-3 pics. but for 78? not so much. its a terrible design choice, especially when batch select was available in the stock gallery app

quickpic is a great find for sure.

If you use the light theme with Quickpic, it pretty much looks like a built in Android app anyway. Even has the latest material design.

I actually like the G+ pictures app and was using it before I got my N6.

I have to say that I am also extremely disappointed with Google's photo gallery app. It sucks indeed. I am coming from the LG G3 and their gallery app was awesome. The layout was wonderfully displayed and user friendly. Not to mention all of the great features it offered, such as add albums, move photos and videos around and also to hide and then lock selected albums. If we could get that on the Nexus 6, that would truly be an epic win for us all.

Use Motorola Gallery (bundled with Motorola Camera), available in this forum or in the Moto G section.

stop crying about this. did you even google for the gallery apk? it is in the nexus 6, in any aosp build. it works on the nexus 6 just fine. all you had to do is google for the apk and install it, instead of crying about it. btw, here is the gallery apk, just install it like any other app http://goo.gl/cfB8ak

+1 for quickpic here
Google Photos blows

i mean i was complaining about the new stock app. you're suggesting something that's not the stock app. i did lots of googling and am well versed in the alternatives i've found and what was suggested here. does not change the fact that the stock app sucks. not really crying either. i find your hostility odd...
anyway, i've been using quickpic. it's pretty outstanding

[Q] Recommend Camera Replacement app?

Hi guys
I've regularly switched between CM and Sense as I try to find a set up I'm happiest with, the thing that keeps pushing me back to Sense is the camera app. I've just flashed the CM7 Nightly and I'm going to stick with it, my question to you is "Do you use a replacement camera app and if so, which one and why?"
Many thanks
Matt
ive used CM to, and switched back to sense ui for the same reason as you did... i stick with sense though... feels better for me
Dont know any good Camera app...
Vignette. It's basically hipstamatic for Android.
Just google it or look at some streams on flickr, you will not be dissappointed.
Camera 360 is awesome, even the free version although I think I might actually buy the paid version soon.
Also try FxCamera, worth it just for the Toy Camera mode. My favourite photos taken with my old Hero were with this. It's not a serious replacement for the stock camera app though, more of fun app like Vignette.
I also have CameraPro but I wouldn't recommend that a it's not much better than stock and used to f/c too much.
I couldn't live with a non-Sense ROM. For all HTC have got wrong they've got so much more right when it comes to the look and feel of the UI. I'm a sucker for the settings widgets too
Dear munkimatt,
I recommend " Lg camera " application. It can both take photos and record videos. Also there are plenty of settings improve the quality. you can download it directly from the Market. hope this helps.
Kind Regards,
i need sense camera app, gallery app, music and mail app to stick with CM
vigniette is the best replacement so far but i've tested it and i can confirm it doesn't produce as good results as the stock camera app
PROTOCHIP where can i find this LG camera?

Android Market.

I found a link the other day, I don't have it currently but I can try to find it if someone wants, about a new Android Market. I want to install this but not without a file to reinstall my current Market. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: Thread to get the new APK is http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1166152
it dosent really matter because i think android will be rolling out the new market so it will just replace it
I have been running it for the last three weeks. Visually it looks great and is alot better organized. If anyone would like the APK pm me your email address and ill send it to you.

Do you mean the APK for the new or old market?
Just install it. There should not be any problems. I've been using it for about a month now. Its great!
Alright. I just installed it. I think it's an awesome market. I was just afraid to lose the other one in case something was wrong with this one.
With Google made apps (market, gmail, maybe more... ) you can uninstall updates if something goes wrong as opposed to having to uninstall and find the old apk
menu>> settings>> applications>> manage applications>>all

Thanks. I would hit the thanks button but it yells and says I can only thank 5 times a day.
I have the new APK.
Just sent it to Scott!!
Updated OP. Added a link to get the new apk.
New Android Market!
I saw a new market app on the new Samsung Galaxy Tablet 10.1" yesterday and when I got home my market app asked me to agree to market terms and boom, I had the same market on my phone! I'd assume that this is the market you all are talking about. I would guess everyone will be getting it, it was even pushed to my Droid 1 that's just on WiFi at the moment. Thought it was pretty cool.
Just got the update yesterday....great update.
Movie Rentals eh?
So it looks like Google is launching their new movie rental service with this market update. I don't think I'll use it because I have Netflix, but has anyone tried that feature yet?
I watched "The Switch" with my girlfriend through google movies. It went really well, was cheaper than a lot of places, and it was basically a Youtube video. It had the typical controls and quality selection of youtube, and the picture quality was good. It was quiet, but many video services are, and that may be because of my computer. Overall, 4/5. Could have had better sound, but the quality was really good. Now just wondering if you can download those movies like you can normal youtube clips. Oh, and it doesn't play on rooted devices.

Google just launched their Videos App in the market. You can also view you on device videos through it and the interface and organization is pretty nice. The videos you rent can now be watch through videos instead of YouTube. You can also browse rentals through the app.

One App To Rule Them All - Pics

I take a lot of pics, and videos. I've got a 2 yr old and another child on the way, so my snap shots and videos are going to increase. I like to share this media with family across the country. But I dislike using two or more apps to do it.
I don't like the stock Android ICS gallery and although I do like the older 3D gallery, I dislike the lack of any real options. ie I want to be able to specify which folders it looks at.
Picasa is a great "picture sharing" platform but doesn't have the ability to upload/share video (as far as I could tell), nor is there a stand alone app for it....you need the stock gallery to view your photos.
QuickPic is pretty sweet, but lacks the ability to syn with Picasa. And, also is doesn't have its own upload ability. You need to upload to Picasa, Photobucket or the likes.
Photobucket has pretty great upload / sharing abilities but doesn't really function as a gallery.
Sooooooo considering how great the camera function is becoming in our phones, can't we just have one darn app to handle all of this?? Maybe I'm missing out on something, but I think we're still coming up short in this department.
That's kinda of alot to ask for, but we never know what the future holds.

You're bringing me down bro I hope its in the future. The hardware on smart phones is progressing in leaps and bounds. I needs an everything app

Gallery and Photos, What's the Deal here?!

Very simple discussion topic.
There are two apps that come built in - Gallery and Photos. Why both?
I also find the way they are integrated very confusing especially that when you slide to the right in the camera, it takes you to Photos and not the Gallery (At least in 4.4.2).
Basically, everything about them is confusing... What are your thoughts guys?
EDIT:
Just found something interesting haha:

They are phasing out Gallery and putting Photos in its place. Same with messaging and Hangouts, hence having two apps.
IMO, Photos sucks. It's much more clicking and scrolling to find the pics you want. Gallery is just dead simple. I will be d/ling an app once Photos is the only one (probably the case on the next Nexus models.)

Gallery (as well as messages and browser) are still available in AOSP.Even if they don't get updated, there are always ROMs you can have them in, or extract the apk from

In addition, gallery and camera used to be the same app, it was only in 4.4 they each got their separate APKs just for this phasing out
Gallery = AOSP. Photos = GApps.

why no album/gallery app except Google's own.

Quite disappointing for a camera focused phone. Google photos is not for me.
What are some good alternatives?
I have to agree with you. I have been using Sony phones for years and enjoyed the Album app. I reluctantly am using Google Photos but it received an update today that improves the experience. However, I would be interested in hearing other users alternatives as well.
Google photo is perfect.
Album is discontinued because it cost a lot of money to Sony
It's not perfect (yet)
There is an annoying issue and it seems it will take time to fix it.
You cannot edit photo (cropping for example) if your photo are saved into the microsd card. You need to use a workaround and to have save a copy and delete the original.
I hope they will fix it soon. Please upvote

to be honest I didn't like the Album app at all on the Z and XZ3 , so I'm not missing it
Is it showing your actual photos or the photos once they are uploaded to google?
Try Simple Gallery Pro, much better than sony's album and you can customise everything.
Found this on Reddit. You can install a previous version of Album that works with the X1ii. I've been using it and it's a much better experience than Google Photos.
Have a back up gallery app like Simple Gallery because some folders don't appear in the Album app I've found. Enjoy?

Yes I agree, the Sony album app has always been the best and I have been really missing it.

By any chance, do you know how to get the sd card permission prompt to show up for the 9.8 album apk? Even though it has the permissions in the manifest, no modifications can be made to files on the sd card .
Normally it doesn't have to because album was always a system app

I'll receive the phone in the next days, then I'll try to install it.
For the Paypal donation do you know that user? Is you? I don't have a reddit account...
Xperia album is discontinued by Sony. Sony has cut half of its smartphone division last year, so it is no wonder that most of xperia softwares has to been abandoned. I personally use simple gallery as an alternative.

I would donate not a beer, but two beers to the creator. Please link me the PayPal account, thanks.
Listen folks, before wiping your old phone, download App Extractor, and copy the unpacked 'Album' (or any other) file/program over to your new phone (a PC will help), and voila!
