[Q] Anyone have a list of "Safe-to-disable" apps or services for z3/z3c? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi! I'm new here.
I came from an iphone 5c but then bought myself xperia z3c.
So I was doing a research for awhile on what can make an android smartphone speed/boost up and I came up to a website saying that by disabling some apps/services, it can speed up the phone and save up battery (on top of what stamina mode can do).
I saw a list of apps/services from the other threads but they might not be the same as to what we have on our phones (z3/z3c).
So does anyone here have any list of their own for this?

Not exactly what you want but it should do a first trick - a list by @erousr

Very 1st Things to do After Activation?

Hi everyone, just got my N3 last night and I am pretty excited about it.
I am a long time Mac Rumors member and my past phones have been ...... JB 3g, JB 3gs, JB 4, JB 4s
I am very upset with the tiny screens on my iphones and I refuse to wait another year for the 6 to come out.
So now I am a 1st time Android user and what to really check out the Android scene.
What are the first things I should do with the phone, what should I install right away? (different keyboards, apps, etc)
Is there a thread around here with tutes instructing how to transfer my contacts etc?
I surely will appreciate all replies, so thanks in advance. I really wanna get the very MOST out of this device.
edit: does Google Play offer any rebates/coupons/freebies for newly purchased devices?
Hey I would use smart switch to get your things from iPhone to your new phone but that is after you have it activated

My N3 arrived Wednesday evening, and it's STILL not activated, (and its killing me).
The reason being, I wanna know if there is anything I should do BEFORE I call ATT and activate it.
(I do NOT want to close any windows, so is there is anything you folks recommend I do before I activate it)?
Once activated, what are the first things I should do with the phone, what should I install right away?

What do you mean by call ATT and activate it? All you have to do is put your SIM card in and it is ready to go with a few account setups. After that it is up to you except for rooting and modding. Cant be done right now without voiding your warranty.
First thing you do is scratch off the att emblem since they locked the bootloader

Hello?
Looking for some help here. This keyboard is way different than iphone, is it something you get used to, or should I install something else?
Please tell me what are some of the things I should change/install right away, (there's got to be some "must haves" no?)

For the keyboard, i prefer the google keyboard over the samsung one. It provides functionality similar to the iphone and is easy to switch between the iphone and android if you use them both in daily life.
As for apps, here is a small list of apps i like to have on all of my devices.
GOOGLE CHROME. Its much better than the built in browser and is able to synchronize with my desktop browsers favorites, etc.
Skype: Perfect for if you are travelling over seas at all with your device.
Google Hangouts: A good replacement for the built in SMS app.
Facebook & Twitter: If you need an explanation, you shouldn't be useing these apps.
Battery Doctor by KS Mobile: Simple app, but is helpful to save battery life and know exactly how much you have left.
Google Music: I have most of my library stored on google so it makes my life easy to have this.
Google Books: The book equivalent of my music library. Syncronizes what i have read across devices and browsers.
Kindle for Android: For the ebooks you buy on amazon.
Google Keep: Great for taking quick notes and having them on all your devices.
Dropbox: Great cloud file storage. Comes with free storage and you can pay to get more.
Google Drive: Google version of dropbox.
MX Player: This video player will play any video format you throw at it.
Google Maps: A must have for all smartphone users.
Zedge: While its quality has gone down a fair bit from what it once was, its still a great place to find ringtones and notification sounds for your android device.
GPS Status: Great for calibrating your devices sensors and ensuring that it works properly.
Now for the ROOT ONLY apps.
Titanium backup
SuperSU
Triangle Away
Hopefully this is a useful list to get you started. I have all these plus many more installed on my devices, and I find I use them all fairly regularly.

I prefer Hangouts to Skype because Hangouts features free video multi-chat.
But I use Google Voice for SMS because it provides free unlimited texting. Hangouts insists on using the phone's native number rather than your Google Voice number, so you have to pay extra for a text plan or for individual messages.

I feel like for every-day typical phone use cases, there aren't that many gaps that stand out as needing to be filled by a third party app. You'll probably need a new music player, the defaults are crapola - but I can't be much help here; I keep my music as folders full of MP3 files (like God intended!) and play with Music Folder Player, and shun the dirty S&M ("sync and manage") apps.
There's a big list of stuff that I did when I first got the phone to get it to where I'm happy with it, but all of this was root required stuff. There are apps that come pre-loaded on android devices and can't be removed or disabled without root. Also, customizing stuff that can't be customized without root. I couldn't abide by some of the not-changable-without-root defaults. Getting rid of the "screen turns on so you can unlock it when you hit the home key" behavior is probably the most glaring example for me; my ass* was unlocking it constantly - but coming from iPhone, you probably view that as the Right Thing for home button to do.
I think most people use a custom keyboard. Swiftkey and Swype are the most popular. The phone comes with Swype, but it's an ancient version with limited support for changing the dictionary, you want the newest one.
I use Hangouts for gchat, but not for SMS. I actually prefer default app for SMS..
Settings:
Pull down status bar, long press on wifi, WiFi -> menu -> advanced settings, uncheck auto connect to AT&T hotspots (unless they don't suck where you are. Around here, they often don't have internet behind them, and just break your connectivity for the 30 seconds or so it takes for the phone to connect to them, determine that the wifi is no good, and fall back to 4G. At least this phone does that; Original note would just sit there like a fool trying to use non-functional wifi... I've also yet to find a hotspot that performs better than the 4G does. But I live in a city, so the situation may be different elsewhere).
Pull down status bar, long press on GPS. Uncheck "Use wireless networks" - on newer versions of android, this drains battery while idle; the damned thing wakes the phone periodically to check the networks around it - if the phone is nearly idle, this can halve battery life (!!!)
Pull down status bar, swipe to the left along the options at the top (woah, did you know you could do that?), tap multiwindow to enable multiwindow (this was a headline feature for the note 3, but comes disabled by default). If I long-press back button, that makes the multiwindow tab hide or unhide (once it's enabled), but I don't remember if I had to do something to get this behavior.
General must-have things:
AppOps Starter (to kill permissions from apps that request permissions you don't want to give them)
Battery Monitor Widget (gives you a realtime readout of battery usage)
ES File Explorer
If you want to pretty-ize clock + weather widgets:
DigiClock
Eye in Sky
If you work in IT or have need of these (if you aren't sure what these mean, you don't need them ):
ConnectBot (telnet/ssh client)
AndFTP (ftp/sftp client, supports scp if you pay)
RDP Client (remote desktop and VNC client)
FEAT VPN (OpenVPN client)
Hacker's Keyboard (you'll tear your hair out trying to use swype/swiftkey for terminal sessions or RDP)
If you want to root the phone:
Root it, then immediately install titanium backup and "freeze" AT&T software update, so it won't update your phone (breaking root) while you're not looking
Titanium Backup - freeze all the useless bloatware that AT&T and Samsung included (there's a list of what apps you can freeze here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmzC8GFarItSdGpOZzBfWlR4MC03aDMyZ1BDUFNqU0E - not my work)
Root Explorer
Pen Window Manager for adding apps to the pen window feature
Xposed Framework
Wanam - general huge amount of customization, including selecting apps for multiwindow.
Keyboard Manager (almost a necessity if you use ConnectBot/RDP frequently - keyboards designed for messaging and such are garbage for doing administration of non-phone systems, while hacker's keyboard is garbage for messaging and everyday phone stuff)
Terminal Emulator (gives you a command prompt on phone. Doesn't require root, but there are very few use cases for terminal on android that don't also need root)
*Well, I keep it in my front pocket, so technically it wasn't my /ass/ unlocking the phone....

note 4, facebook and some other questions

as i was considering the note 4 and contemplating between note 4 and lg [i think it was] g4, i had the problem with deciding becoz of one has fb on it, the other one no pen. [my carrier is t-mobile, although not in the us, i sit in the eu, but i don't think there are too many differences, hopefully]
which leads me to my problem.
1/ if i turn on the phone without sim or anything inside, and disable the apps i don't need/want, will they go dead, or will in the case of fb happen this:
[there would have been some links from android central where is described that fb-app updates itself outside of play even when disabled. that this is some kind of security issue, and that they told google about it, also fb about that, with the answer live with it or change your phone. they also told samsung about it. and that there is a samsung usa ticket for that: 2135760316 [that post is from 05-13-2015, 11:32 AM, by kelly kearns]. as it is impossible to post links, that's the only way i can put it here somehow]
so basically, there is no way to get rid of this useless thing, if i understand it correctly? and i have to accept, that even if disabled, it will still enable itself and update? therefore, next point ... if there is no account of that junk, does it still try to get every thing on the phone because of the permissions it has been granted, even if it is disabled?
therefore², if i disable an app, does that mean, its basically dead i.e. doesn't do anything compared to being enabled? or what does disable exactly mean?
[um, yes, i totally dislike fb, therefore ... you get my point]
1.1/ in one of the copied links above [or was it somewhere else] someone said something about an app that freezes other apps or something like that. might that have the desired effect for me?
1.2/ after putting in the sim and signing in to google ... what will that disabled fb do? or is it basically as said in the screenshot of that conversation ... you not liek, take other phone? [who are they? god? .... oh ... wait, actually ... given the ties to nsa ... nevermind]
2/ as this is my second android phone, so, if i add the google account on that phone, it copies every thing that's stored on the old one to the new one. but ... wot exactly happens with the apps it copies? are they still the same version as on the old phone or during the copying are they being updated? i'm asking, coz there are some i don't want to be updated, tune in for example [as i don't like the added social something and wotever came after my version]. or stays the app the same and i have to update it myself?
2.1/ regarding copying ... wot happens with my sms and call logs? and, can i decide what i want to be copied or is there no option of choice?
2.2/ same goes with the games i copy ... like the doctor who one from tiny rebel games. do i lose the current point where i am or not?
3/ is there any way to port or copy the s note from note 2 also over to note 4, or any chance to find the apk of it somewhere? it's just, that the note 4 version doesn't do idea note and sketch any longer, as those are the two templates i used most, as it is.
[eta] 3.1/ what about the dictionary and the handwriting? does it have to learn both from scratch or is it also going to be copied?
tnx a lot in forward for answering my questions,
meh

Regardless of whichever phone you get. Just go ahead of root it and use Titanium Backup or another root App. I personally use Rom Toolbox because it's App Manager lists the apps by APK name. Use an app like what I suggested to remove all the garbage you don't want.
I personally chose the Note 4 over the G4.
yes, i could root, but then i'll lose any ounce of warranty. i don't know when t-mob changed that, but that's how it is now ... and given my track record there might be a day when i might need it.

Sports app like endomondo getting killed in background

Yesterday i was riding on bike with endomondo and strava apps both running for about 3 hours and everything was ok.
But today, when i was riding only with endomondo app, something killed it after ~ 1 hour of tracking. It just died, and my training wasn't complete.
Both apps are protected in battery menu, battery mode is set on normal. I have about 1GB or more ram free. I do not use auto optimization
I heard about huawei problems with sports tracker apps, but come on, on new flagship phone?...
Any solution to this problem?
my model is european one, eva-l09 with stock rom b136
If you are rooted try freezing "power genie". Worked for me with another app that I had issues with, which relies on background process (gmd gesture control).
And/or try making it a system app.
I do not have root yet, didn't want to woid my warranty unless i knew everything is ok with this phone
today my endomondo and strava apps were killed after 2 hours and 48 minutes of workout... this is so bull****
Just add it to the memory whitelist. All settings available via preinstalled Huawei Phone Manager app.
i've added them to memory whitelist and to the battery whitelist but unfortunatelly this doesn't work at all
Nothing? It's only me having this problem, or nobody uses sports apps? Today it died after 70 minutes of training. Old samsung galaxy ace 2 recorded training perfectly...
Anyone rooted could check if this problem is still present? After you add endomondo or strava to system apps folder?
For what its worth, I am having exactly the same issues with Endomondo. Did you manage to find a solution at all?

Me too, I am having the same issues with Endomondo. I don't want to get root but I've set the memory whitelist and the battery whitelist.
Sadly, I gave up and now I am using Sport Tracker that, since now, didn't stop event after 2 hours.
Hi, I've done everything said in this thread but the app strava closes after an hour of use..
Anyone have found how to fix this issue?
Thanks
Have you tried another app? Mapmyride seems to be ok for me apart from when the gps gets confused and I get the odd straight line, seems to be another feature of this phone

Sorry, I don't understand, what do you mean?
As in, try a third .sport app. to rule out an issue with the app.
Yes, install android 7.0 It is fixed there
I had / have the same issue, after a few hours it is seeying it as an battery drain app and it closes it. (Running the newest EMUI and Android 7.0) ... so still not great, also using Strava (in combination with relive.cc)
will try the memory thing though
Well first of all, if not every app behave like that, and not everyone have that problem, its obvious its not problem of model but your specific device and lack of optimization(bigger companies are actually more know of lacking that).
Next.
I used before endomondo, now I installed it again... and no problem at all. So again, I would say that its problem of specific device and your system configuration.
I would suggest checking AGAIN those options:
Settings->battery-> options(top-right corner) and disable option "turn off energy-intensive applications"
And then go to Application list in settings-> select settings(bottom gear icon)->Special access->Ignore Optimization and there select your app.
Hard to say anything else, because its impossible to reconstruct behave of your phone, and see what cause the problem. In this case everything matter, starting from apps you use to settings you have on your device.

OTG updates and rebooting won't change anything, what's uninstalled will stay uninstalled, but factory reset will reset the phone to its original 'factory' condition.
thanks for this, very helpful
does any one know if these lists to debloat are broken down into usable groups to warn if you intend to use a certain a certain application , eg samsung pay you cannot remove the following items, etc. I've had issues in the past that removing a few items caused others to malfunction. i just don't want to get debloat happy and cause kept items to fail.

Ppl have different priorities, a relevant app for someone might be disregarded by others so you have to do it on your own. Best way to find out is to google the entire package name "com.xxxx.xxxxx.etc..." and look for the answers.
Wouldn't it be nice if Samsung acted like a respectable manufacturer and not some back alley pimp?
It's not like these junk filled phones are cheap.

It's a very useful app. It allows you to set a widget that when an entry is checked it will toggle the apk(s) on/off by touching the widget
Uses very little battery. Runs clean and stable.
Something else unique about it is for troubleshooting when you clear an apk's data it leaves no nulls (presumably) behind.
It can completely clear a system apk's data that clearing the data in Settings will not.
That saved me a reload once and also allowed me to isolate the system apk that was causing the issue.

If you don't disable updates Verizon can alter your firmware as they see fit.
Verizon like AT&T are partnered with Samsung, let that stink in for a few seconds.
Verizon gives active input to firmware updates from Samsung. To the point were the interface may be quite different from a stock Samsung... and not necessarily for the better.
The last updates are usually the worst; been there, done that.
Not taking that ride again

What works for one person may not work for another as there many variants of the same model.
It's best if you try to learn what the apk you're disabling does. Some have dependencies.
Some will boot loop the device if not able to run on boot up. I'm also using Karma Firewall so sometimes instead of disabling an apk I simply firewall block it to retain better functionality and ease of use. I have no easy solution that fits all. Learn by doing.
You should always be ready to do a reload with all critical your data backed up.
It's rarely needed but it can be needed at any moment with little or no warning.
That said I've never crashed an OS using a package disabler however your results may vary
I use my SD card as a data drive. I can do a full restore anywhere, anytime with little or no internet connection in about 2 hours.
Without an SD card your backup alternatives are less attractive...
There is literally zero data showing that debloating brings a any value or efficency at all

Hi everybody,
Any ideas to why possibility of using google lens from within google photos is missing.
Newest versions of both photos and lens are installed.
In addition locked folder is also missing.

I'm pretty sure the locked folder feature is only for Google Pixel devices at this point (all devices might get it eventually). I'll have to take a look at Photos on my Tab S8 Ultra regarding Lens. I wouldn't think by now that it's only for Pixel devices.
Well, according to google Forums lens is built into photos app and should be working on any device by now.
I mean, I can make it without folder thing since samsung has something similar which actually works but living without lens integrated into photos is going to be tough - I use this function a lot.
I have Xperia handset and both locked folder and lens works.
Maybe it has something to do with photos not being system app on my tab s8+
Thanks for taking time and checking if it works on your tablet.

I doubt if it has anything to do with not being a system app.
Great news. I was able to do everything on the tablet. The only caveat is that to use Lens, I had to go into an image in Photos and choose the Share button and then choose Lens. FYI, the first time, I found that Lens was "disabled" (maybe from non-use?), so I had to enable it, plus there was an updated version available.
And I found the locked folder fine via two methods - the Utilities tab and the 3-dot menu inside an image.
All screenshots taken on my bootloader unlocked, rooted Wi-Fi only Tab S8 Ultra.

Help & feedback
You're welcome! Are you rooted, too?
Thanks again for taking time to help me!
So, yes I can see option to set up Locked folder now in utilities. Fanny thing, it wasn't there yesterday, but works now.
When it comes to lens, your suggested workaround works too. Minor inconvenience that now hole process takes couple of additional clicks.
Still, why it can't just work like on a phone? ( I guess my OCD kicks in ). Even windows version of google photos has lens functionality built-in, but hey, at least the workaround is there.
Maybe it's a tablet thing, there are two versions of Photos, one for handsets and one for tablets, right?

No, I stopped rooting my devices couple of years back. But maybe with this tablet I'm gonna start again. I would like it to be...more sock android like.

If Locked Folder still wasn't available to you, I was going to ask you how long you've had the tablet - I was wondering if maybe being left on and connected to Wi-Fi (or mobile data) would eventually lead to the feature being enabled for you.

I agree. On my Pixel 6 Pro, if I want Info about the image I just swipe up, but it's weird that on the Tablet UI they replace the Lens button with the Info button. Maybe that's something that'll trickle down to tablets eventually.

Not that I know of, at least as far as it's the same Play Store entry no matter what - but I don't know for sure. Maybe this evening if I remember I'll compare version numbers for the Photos app on my phone versus my tablet.

If the tablet were my main mobile device, I would want to, too. I don't have the time to micromanage my devices too much these days, though.

The tablet is brand new, I had it for like 3 days.
At first, the only message in utilities tab in photos was one about joining my libery with my partners. After I clicked it away the next morning message about locked folder appeared.
