Is there a way to close all running apps with one button? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to close all running apps with one button? Previous versions of Android had it and I feel like a reviewer mentioned using the feature. I just don't have the button on my screen.

Nope. In custom ROMs for other phones (CM12 Pre-nightly) theres a button that clears all the apps in recents but its not present in stock Android.
You'll have to wait for the custom ROMs to come before you get this feature.

As far as I know there is not a way to do this. There should be in my opinion though. Maybe a mod soon

Oh ok, I thought it was part of stock Android. My bad. It really should be... lol

To be picky, they aren't running. From this perspective I am glad they don't have a clear all, because it gives the impression that clearing cashed apps is good or helpful.

Maybe your coming from a Samsung phone? I'm just guessing but that button exists as part of touchwiz.

Do. Not. Clear. All. Apps.
Not constantly. Not obsessively. Not hourly.
It does nothing to improve your experience but degredation in opening speed and CPU required to do so is possible. Some apps will even function incorrectly (bad design on their part, but easy to do)!
I'm NOT a fan of the new recents but clearing-all has never been a part of stock abdroid for a reason.

Without question you're right.
Problem is not all apps behave and not all of us are experts at identifying which app is the problem. This is where help is needed from the OS. And it seems like rather than making it easier they're making it harder (by requiring root to get certain usage data, i.e. GSAM).
Until then, folks will want a "clear all".

Going into Settings>Apps>Running will show which apps are running in the background. They will be doing so even after you clear all.

For me I'm not concerned about performance, but when you've got 40 or so different tabs to scroll through sometimes its nice just to close them all and start over. This is when a close all would be nice to have in stock android.

Its meant to be used for quick task switching. If you're trying to use recents to find an app older than say the last 5 or so, you don't want to be doing that.
Why they have to go so far back is beyond me.
If you're rooted, chain fire has an app (called recently) that helps manage recents. I set mine to show only actual running app and 5 more apps after that, for up to 2 hours. It also has a clear all button which as mentioned, should NOT be used.

If you want to root your phone you can keep it on the stock ROM and just install Recently by Chainfire.

The photo is dark because i used a rc29 android g1 and we all know there camera app sucks!
anyways the graphics aren't half bad! with wifi it keeps up maybe 3-4 seconds lag time. Almost all keys are operational except im having a problem moving with keys "w,s,a,z". Other then that i can press enter and type or o to bring up friends list. if we can edit the app i used im sure we can get things running perfectly! Would work with many other games to.
NOTE: THIS POST IS NEW I DELETED MY OLD WAY OF PLAYING WOW SO DISREGARD MOST REPLIES BELOW.
Whoa... nerd.
Nah Im jk, this would be sweet.
Well this would be cool. I used to just VNC in. But isnt there a G1 app that let you install J2ME stuff? Wouldnt this still work on the G1?
Now give me a app to play FFXI and Im all over that. ^^ But still I may fiddle with this later tonight see if its workable.
I know Blizzard is very strict about third party type software, so be careful. I remember reading they were banning accounts running WoW through linux using wine emulation, picking it up as 3rd party software.

Yes, but that doesn't mean it won't happen again Just a warning
Meh Ive been in this battle since Ultima Online and still have it, FFXI "Windower" is a 3rd party tool, WoW same things. The key element that even internal staff has told me is that if your not trying to get noticed, you wont be harmed. Long as you dont try to make it so obvious your using something different.. or trying to script kiddie and be a idiot while doing it wrong... then yea.

That's fine, but like I said, I am just warning people they could get banned. Whether it is temporary or not, I really don't care. I am just warning people. No need to be so defensive.
Im not, but btw, I was looking at something called TurboVNC Not sure I understand it fully but it seems to be a better opengl streamer for vnc.
i updated my post.
So you got it working basically? Did all the steps work or what.
Ok.... so can you tell us how?
I think I figured it out...but I decided to give it a shot using Diablo 2 instead of WoW because of the lower requirements
can u tell us how?
Crap...I completely messed up the joke. When I said "but I decided to give it a shot" I meant to put shot in italics as it's just a picture snapped through the camera. I'm still waiting on instructions again from the OP on how he got it running since he edited his post.
someone should make a thottbot application for the android
I used phone2pc. If we can get a developer to edit this app or maybe an app like it, I am sure we can work out all the bugs. Most of my keys work I can talk to people I can press a few of the quick keys like "o" brings up your friends list... I can tap the screen to exit out of things and start spells... but i can't walk. Some one should be able to figure this out and maybe even make the response time quicker.

Is there any way to recreate the "Render Effect" Feature from CM7

Anyone who used CM7 might recall a feature buried in the settings (under display if I recall correctly) called Render Effect. It allowed you to alter the temperature of screen color as well as flat-out kill all colors but one. This allowed you to make the display go completely blue, or completely green or completely red.
Apart from being a nifty party trick, this was a feature I used routinely. Changing the display to red allowed me to use my navigation while driving at night and still preserve my natural night vision. It also was a nice thing to have enabled when the phone went off in the middle of the night.
So, does anyone know of an app/mod out there that allows us to achieve this? I really don't know why this feature was never permanently merged into the CM base, it appears to have disappeared in CM9 I think.
I have stumbled across some apps developed by ChainFire that appear to do this but unfortunately the app description specifically says it is for FroYo or Gingerbread devices only... see here

IMO you can change screen colors with Franco kernel. It might be worth taking a look at.

Twilight is what you are looking for: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.urbandroid.lux
Yes, there is also lux, but twilight ist free
I'm also interested in this feature, and I've tried the "filter" apps including twilight and it is not the same at all.
Is this something that can only be done at a low level or can it happen in an app?

Alpha tester here! Wanted to spread the word now that we were out of stealth phase!
Nextbit Baton offers several benefits to users, including:
Sync: Keeps apps and data in sync across multiple devices, allowing users to move fluidly from one device to the next without missing a beat.
Pass: Send any open app in its current state to another device, saving time and eliminating the tedious process of manually finding and opening apps on different devices.
Backup and restore: Save apps and data to your Nextbit profile in the cloud, so you can always get your apps back on any device.
Nextbit’s private beta is exclusively on CyanogenMod, the leading open-source, community-driven Android OS backed by Cyanogen Inc. The future public release of Nextbit will be available first on the commercially distributed Cyanogen operating system.
“Cyanogen continues to reimagine Android by introducing bold new firsts,” said Kirt McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen. “Nextbit represents one of these platform firsts that could only manifest on a truly open Android. We enable Baton to become a native OS level feature, creating huge benefit for our users.”

So as of right now this is CM-only, correct, not a free-standing app? Looks cool, I like the idea of having a 'cloud' backup of apps and not having to take up space on my phone.
Could be very popular.... If it wasn't limited to CM. Just a suggestion. ?
Many senior members seem to stay away from CM. ?

That's because like PA they always push out "milestones" which are betas. Hardly ever a real stable release. But that's just my opinion.

That's not how it works.... It lets you, say you were playing a game, you paused in the middle of the race, and sent it to your tablet, it would pick up at that exact point, still paused even, you have to have the app on both devices, it takes the data and the apps current state, sends it to the clout and to your other device verrry quickly and easily too (source: i was in alpha)
How does it handle resources on the SD card? For example, a game that has a 1GB download of additional resources that get stored on your Data partition in some folder?

Bring back dalvik

Anyone else hope Google brings us an option to run dalvik in lolliflop?..
yes it can have a slight delay when pressing home button for instance, but that's the nature of the beast, because much less has been pre compiled. On the other hand apps take less space up, which i think is a bigger advantage.
once a java/dalvik coded app is up and running, qualcomm optimised dakvik reigns king. no benchmarks needed, you can see with your own eyes, launchers, animations run way smoother.
personally i have gone back to kitkat and optimised dalvik
I don't miss Dalvik, have been on ART all the time on KK also. But although I knew that ART would be standard on Lollipop, I thought they would still give users the choice - for compatibility reasons alone, since not all apps (especially games) will run on ART right now.

Agreed. ART is the way of the future. And with so many cloud storage options, space should not be a problem.
there's no xposed for art right now. that's why we need dalvik. will stay on KitKat because of that reason.
it wont happen
If we don't get rid of dalvik completely then some developer will just not fixing ART compatibility.

Screw Dalvik! It's crap compared to ART. Smoother you say? Not a chance. I'm 100% sure they wont bring it back and that's a good thing.
Run Spotify for example in Dalvik compared to ART and that pretty much sums it up.

an app doesn't support ART, so Google is the problem, not maybe, the app developers who had few months to fit their app to art.. interesting.
well, what if Google wouldn't force us to use ART(which is better), and app developers wouldn't have a reason to use art? it could slow down technological advancing and we wouldn't want that.

No it's the app developers fault for not updating their app to ART. Google gave plenty of heads up on the change. Its newer technology and it's entirely the app developers fault if they haven't adapted their app for it. Not sure why you'd think it's Google's fault...

Alternative to App Settings on Lollipop / change DPI of specific app

It changes the global dpi
I understand that, but changing your global DPI can cause some apps to not work as intended so you'd need to change each apps DPI to fix that.
I'm also looking for this. I have used textdroider to change globally but now I just want to revert a few apps (phone, camera, etc) back to stock dpi.
Only way for this to work is by modding the system files and adding in the smali code then make an activity that allows for user to enter in a value they want then system app will read the saved user value and apply it.
This is probably the biggest thing that is keeping me on kitkat. Every time I install lollipop, I get frustrated about this, then I go back to kitkat
I feel the same as you guys- ability of change app's resolution is keeping me on 4.4. I can't image using some apps on default settings...
What is the point of changing the dpi from an app? U get better what?
Layout/view.

You can make your components in view smaller, so you can read more or tap on element faster without scrolling down. Usually, layout elements are (not necessary) too big, IMHO.

Xposed doesn't work on Lollipop
This is exactly why I'll stay on KK for some time, because it feels like I'd have to use buggy custom ROMs like CM to bring back functionality I already have now.
I'm on CM12, and I completely concur with this! Really, the ONLY app that I want to have the default DPI is the Play Store... Freaking apps won't auto-update.
I wasn't thinking and upgraded.. but don't feel like downgrading again..
I have a note 3, don't know what idiot in android or samsungland (I guess android is more to blame?) thought that only grandpas would be using notes?
It's ridiculous to buy an upper-medium-sized phone and have only room for a couple of bubbles of conversation in apps like facebook messenger or viber.
I'm also searching for solution for per app change of dpi (and language) in lollipop. Are there some news?
