[Q] Moto x 2013 camera - Moto X Q&A

There seems to be some problem with my moto x camera!
The pictures are little blurred or noisy, I compared the pictures with nexus 5 and it they are not even close.
I can't find much settings here to adjust focus or exposure. Can some help.
Attached some random clicks from my camera.

The moto x has never been known for its camera.

I totally agree!! But the pictures were more clear in the beginning or for some pictures at least .
Is there any settings update or app that could overcome this issue.
Seriously the pictures are worse than a regular 5MP lumia mobile.

I get best results with HDR and outdoors. I also use auto flash and auto HDR inside. That is a hit or miss. Not saying I don't ever get good shots. But coming from a note and a s4 there is no comparison.

Thank you., I already tried that,
But the problem started after installing the app., unlocking advanced options.
The pictures were not at all clear. I might have tampered with unnecessary options.

Maybe try to clear the data on just the stock camera app. That should restore all the default settings.

You could try to turn on control focus and exposure, it allows you to drag a box over the area you want focused. It helps in certain scenarios. Like others have already said, cameras have never been a strong suit for Moto

Clean the lens

This ^^^
The phone won't just take worse pictures with time.
You might have micro scratches too.

Please check this screenshot!
May be there are some scratches!
I observed one more disturbance when I open my camera,
Seeing some vertical lines while I was trying to take a picture!
Seems like magnetic disturbance! Is this expected?
Attached a pic for reference,
And the images are fine from close distance but the more distant the object is its get blurred, which is not the case for 8mp nexus 5.

I compared the camera's of my mobile moto x and moto g second gen, seriously my photos were out of focus and missing clarity.
As well the vertical lines observed in my phone are not there in moto g.
Will restore to factory settings and check it, anything else I can do?

My One camera can't focus good + RBP issue + strange white regulation

Hello, I read 2 topics about One camera issues and considering I have not just RBP problem in low light photos but also a problem with focus I decided to create a topic talking about my personal experience. In the most of case, I am not able to focus good in photos. I tried with other devices and the focus works good. I tried also using instant take photo touching display but nothing changed. Here some photos

How you can see in one part of the floor there's just white, as if he had problems with white regulation. I tried with Motorola Razr and the photo is more bilanced. Here another example: http://imageshack.us/a/img694/3578/h5by.jpg

I am really nervous about all of that. Photos are taken with android 4.1 stock and android 4.2 with ARHD 12.1 . My device is made in china and May's stock bought in Amazon.co.uk
Hi
I have same problem. Xda dont allow linking picture, because im a newbie.
Same problem here, bad auto focus, and balance. Camera isn't the best, it can take photos but it's hit and miss. I'm not sure if there had been any forward progress on this. Could try the GPE camera in the theme and apps section

It's the device that's faulty because mine doesn't take shots like that. Yes, it has it flaws, all smartphone cameras do but I've taken better shots with my One than I ever took with my iPhone 5. The GE camera also isn't a patch on the Sense one, the software tweaks blow the washed out, dull GE camera away.

Those out of focus shots are not normal, not for all the scenarios you've stated. I'd look at getting it swapped if I was you.

Possible to get rid of the ungodly shutter delay in the camera?

I turned off auto HDR, and I still have to hold the camera steady for like a second after capturing a shot or else it will be blurry. Is there any way to enable a faster shutter speed?
Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
HDR by definition is taking at least 3 individual photos to capture and combine. This is the delay you are experiencing. IMHO it should only be used for static images. Anything with movement is not a good application for HDR. source, I'm a photographer.
In terms of manual controls, I've not found any for the turbo cam app. Boo.

Hoping this is a bug that gets fixed. The 2014 x is quite a bit faster.
I'm sort of guessing/hoping that moto is putting energy into the new camera stuff for L rather than optimizing for kitkat.

the camera is basically useless indoors unless your subject is stationary.
Agreed...For me it was too much as this is my main camera when out and about with my toddler. My S5 still takes better picture for now, so had to return the Turbo..>Will definitely keep an eye on updates etc, because other than that, this phone is beautiful...
Really hoping this gets fixed soon as well. The camera is pretty much worthless as is because of the shutter lag. I tried other camera apps from the market as well and the issue persists.
In fairness I think the N5 camera was worse at release... Source: Someone that knows next to nothing about photography and has low needs and expectations but isn't satisfied with the offering here.
Have you tried using the Google camera app, from the Play Store? I've heard that it has more features and performs better than Moto's camera app.
The camera has the ability to take photos without the shutter delay. This is noticeable when you click and hold to take multi photos. Only the first image has a delay and the rest are pretty fast. Hopefully, a software update will solve the single/first photo issue.

I tried the google camera app from the play store and the problem persists. Also tried every setting in the app on/off. How does a phone of this caliber have shutter lag?

Not seeing anything that helps shutter speed. Tried a few settings and searched the thread but no improvements to shutter speed/lag anywhere to be found. Hopefully a Lollipop update will "fix."

Last year's X and Droids had similar issues, from slowness to colors. They were fixed in future updates.
I'm not seeing this problem. Very responsive for me.
I did take the OTA today though.. I didn't see a changelog, but figured it was just for Advanced LTE Calling..

[Q] ..tied up between MOTO G or.....??

So friends..
I've finally got my money back from my mom !
Well, the amount is enough to trade for a Moto G 2014.
I like taking pictures with my smartphone.
So i'm a little doubt on getting THIS or LUMIA 730.
I'm not telling you to compare this phones and tell which is the best'
I just need your best decision on which would suit me the most?

If you decide just for the camera, you should go for the Lumia, I personally like Android more than Windows phone.

Yes..! That the question that taunts me.!
Go for APPS or CAMERA??
What would you rely on as an Android user!
I personally prefer Android over Windows Phone, also because of the Apps, but not only.
Would saving up for the OnePlus One be an Option?
Or look up the HTC Desire 510, the camera should be pretty good, but it has no flash.
Thanks for your opinion..
Let's see what other people thinks!
I don't like windows phone much, talking about the moto g 2014 camera, it is miles better than my old N4, and it has way more apps for photo editing and apps in general than the lumia

Really, it's apples to oranges. If you fit the Windows ecosystem, fine. If Android is your style, fine. Really those are truly the two differentiating features - camera vs apps. With my Moto G, I don't do any sort of photography other than random snaps so it's been fine. Low light photos are a bit grainy, otherwise, it does the job.

For photos a real camera would be sure the better choice, so I'd recommend apps
Honestly i like moto g's camera but I will recommend you to buy Alcatel idol X+, You'll get a 441ppi 1080p display, better camera, 2gb ram and a better processor.

Dismal Camera Focus?

The camera seems to take pictures well for the most part, but if I try to capture the detail in an object I can't even come close to getting a decent picture. I've tried tapping over and over, using the manual focus on L camera, all with fuzzy, out of focus results.
Just to get an idea of how bad this is, I captured the lighter in pretty good detail with my Nexus 4...
Is my phone defective or is the focusing on the camera just bad?
you have to use touch to focus to get detailed photographs. do you use touch to focus? oh, and macros, with the n6 cam you have to hold it back another 1.5-2 inches back, further back than on tbe n4 and n5, or the object will never get focused on.

i own the n4, n5, and n6. the n4 takes wonderful macro shots. the n5, just as good, maybe slightly better. for the n6, you really do have to pull the camera back a bit more, thats the very first thing i noticed with this cam. but after the shot, you can crop closer(because of 13mp), and the end product can look the same. i know, i take a massive amount of macro and regular shots.

my camera doesn't focus at all, no matter how far away I am. I've tried everything. Manual settings it off, i touch the area on the screen i want to focus to and it sort of tries to focus but when it settles the inside circle doesn't go green and it is still out of focus. [Q] Will the Lollipop update fix the terrible camera?

As we all know the sensor and lens on the Z3 are some of the best on the market right now. However, for some reason, Sony, who make maybe the best compact cameras out there, seems to have failed miserably in regard to the camera software in its phones. All photos come out with little detail, soft focus, artifacts and overprocessed. Do you think that will get fixed in 5.0(2)? Will the camera finally be comparable to, say, the Galaxy Note 4 or some of the Lumias?
Regards.
what terrible camera?
i'm no Ansel Adams, but i think the Z3c has a great camera, especially once you get the hang of it.

In theory yes. With Lollipop we will be able to take RAW images with the camera due to the new api. RAW images are unprocessed, straight from the sensor. The Sony camera sensor is good but the software image processing isn't. Taking photos in RAW eliminates the poor image processing so the images should be much much better.

I actually agree on this, especially when taking photos. All the other devices I used before my Z3 Compact did not try to focus again after I already touched focus a certain area, but my Z3C actually does so as I press the shutter button. It also has trouble trying to focus on really close objects, only able to get precise focus 1/10 of the time.
I personally use google camera for simple, clear, low-processed pictures. The drawback is that the photos cannot be saved on the sd card w/o root.
Or, you can very well use the manual mode - this one also is pulling some nice photos, w/o blur,

Atleast on the regular Z3 you can choose to save photos and videos on the sd card directly.
Camera, the three blocks, settings icons.
I'm currently playing around with the app ABetterCamera and so far images are taken faster and low light photos look much better. They have an option to choose where to store the photos and if you choose external card it gives you the message Android doesn't allow that...BUT there is an option to choose custom folder which I pointed to the SDCard and it worked!
Yeah I find the camera terrible too.
My dads Note 2 takes much better pictures. If I put them side by side at a certain distance and take a picture of a piece of paper, on one I can clearly read what is written on it, and on the other it's all blurrines. I didn't expect this camera to suck that big especially compared to such an old low-res camera.
If that was not enough, colors are much more innatural on the sony, while the note 2 reproduces them much better...

All photos come out with little detail, soft focus, artifacts and overprocessed. Do you think that will get fixed in 5.0(2)? Will the camera finally be comparable to, say, the Galaxy Note 4 or some of the Lumias?
Regards.

I personally will not get my hopes up that Sony will do anything to the camera software to improve image quality just because 5.0 supports RAW format. Sony may not even include RAW support in their version of 5.0.
So many times, phone manufacturers pick and choose which features of android to implement or substitute that feature with their own.

The formal answer is "no" - it will NOT fix the poor image processing. RAW format is not supported by Sony in Android 5.0

That's sad, I had my hopes up that they would finally do something about it. How can a camera company make a phone camera so bad I can't understand.

You can actually turn the "soft skin effect" off in the menu and if you want better pictures from the front camera make sure the "HDR" option is always enabled.

Camera FV-5 is a better choice. It allows 100% JPG Quality, 100% Thumbnail quality AND uncompressed PNG format option for taking shots.

You cannot. Try to turn it off, take a picture, then take a picture when it's on. There is apsolutely no difference.
camera is not terrible, doesn't need to be fixed. because iphone has better camera doesn't mean it's terrible, it's just second best after Gs5 in android (third after iphone)

Hardware is indeed great, but software is very bad, and since the combination of both make the picture, the camera needs to be fixed (software part).
I mean look at all the phones using SONY sensors, they take excellent pictures on AUTO. Z3? Nope, rarely. Manual is super, but sometimes you do not have the time to fiddle around with the settings. And no DNG RAW in 5.0.2? Well, totally wasted potential of this phone's camera.
I'm very disappointed with the Z3C camera too... I mean, considering the specs, I was hoping for a lot much better pictures.
I´ve just got mine, I did a lot of research before buying a new phone (I had a Note 2), and the main reasons why I bought this phone are: size/specs, battery life and camera. I also considered buying the Moto Maxx (Brazilian Droid Turbo variant) but the Z3C compactness (is this a word?) made me chose it and I'm kind of regretting it a little bit... lol
