Odd "bricking" - RAZR i Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

OK, twice now this has happened.
The first time was after I updated some apps. The second was when I had installed a new app.
Initially several apps then fail to work, they open and close straight away.
I reboot and phone hangs on first M screen - before the swirly white bits.
Into recovery from there shows dead Android with open chest and Explanation mark (I think)
Factory reset from recovery fail doesn't seem to do anything
Only solution is to flash official ROM using RSD
Phone is totally UK Orange Stock - not unlocked or rooted.

To access recovery in the Android with open chest and Explanation mark : press Volume up AND down some times to get in recovery
and in recovery try factory reset.

Thanks for that, it may be useful in future, but any ideas what may have caused this?

See http://forum.xda-developers.com/razr-i/general/index-razr-t2832722 - should answer all your questions - but yes, you can use RSD on any phone, without unlocking or rooting - it is the official Motorola tool. The O2 De ROMs are on the linked page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028814

By looking at your other post you are using this zip file in RSD-lite: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2028814
As the Titel of the thread says, they are 'OTA' updates. So only usable through recovery and when going from a working 4.0.4 stock rom to 4.1.2.
That's why u are getting that error. The zip is not intended to be used through RSD-Lite.
U will need to get your hands on a JB RSD-Lite firmware zip file. This site: http://motofirmware.com/files/category/24-smi/
Has some firmwares, not all.

Thanks I followed Eserims advise. I also found this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2239706 before, but only working link was Retail UK/British and I wasn't sure if I can use it since i have O2DE.
But on the site you showed me I found this: CFC_9.8.2I-50_SMI-26_S7_USASMIJBO2DE.xml.zip. I don't know what CFC means, but I'm going to try it, thank you.
Update:
It's working... Couple of days reading threads, searching the internet and nothing, than Hazou came and it's done, thaks again.

[Help needed] Semi-bricked Milestone

Hi all,
prior to any comment, yes, i know there are already posts on this issue, however looking through them didn't help at all unfortunately.
I have a Moto Milestone, origin is Israel.
somewhere along the way i've updated the bootloader to 90.78 and since then - the phone is stuck in the notorious loop and cannot restart the OS.
Tried already to reflash the phone without luck using RSD Lite (downloaded the SBF through http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone - the 'official' Cellcom IL SBF that was there...)
anyway - i can still access the bootloader which tells me the phone is not fully bricked, however i can't seem to find any proper SBF so it'll reflash itself back to an operative state.
One major problem here - the phone won't get into recovery mode (i've tried all the combinations i know and that have worked before)
i've also read about wiping the cache and user data however - as far as i know, this can only be done by entering the recovery mode, right?
one last resort i've tried - trying to split the SBF and reconstructing it - still no joy.
does anyone here have any advice or solution o this issue? what kind of SBF do i need? how to manually reconstruct the SBF with proper files? etc.
Thanks in advance,
Tomer
Have you tried loooking into fastboot?
Sometimes a phone wont respond to to adb commands and the recovery is corrupted, but you can still flash partitions using fastboot. I "saved" a Moto dext in this fashion once. Cant remember the exact commands, but it was similar to the adb flash commands. I reflashed the recovery partition and then used recovery to flash a ROM in update.zip format. For some reason RSD lite was failing on this phone.
Just something you may want to look into if you are desperate about saving your MS.

Hi Caz666,
well, thought this might actually work, but had no luck.
when i try to flash my phone it does nothing other than showing me 'downloading boot.img' and thats it.
is there anything else to do in order to save my phone? i really like it
I'm also willing to donate through PayPal to anyone who can describe any working method or that can point me to any valid working process...
thanks again.

are you sure your drivers for the phone are installed properly? what RSD lite version are you using? What system? windows 32 or 64 bits?

I'm quite sure they're installed properly as i managed to upgrade my bootloader version using the RSDlite.
my system is 32 bits and the drivers are the ones i installed throught the Motorola website. I've first used RSDlite 4.6 but after reading a bit I understood there are some differences between versions hence upgraded to 4.9.

Try the 90.78ch bootloader from http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone ...
"XT702 variant of the 90.78 bootloader (notes from 90.78 apply here too).
It's reported to work on the A853 too. "
You've got nothing to loose on trying this. Let me know!

I'm now on 90.78ch and see no difference whatsoever.
I've now started investigating how to re-compile an older SBF file so it'll contain the new RAMDL
(I want to flash the Brazilian version however it contains only 90.74 RAMDL)
I've compiled a new file, however the checksum is incorrect.
How it is possible to recompile this properly?
Already tried the website, the mirror there is no leading to the bootloader itself but to a wiki site.
i've tried searching almost anywhere i know, but this bootloader is non available to download.
if there's another mirror site such as rapidshare or megaupload - i'd be happy to be pointed towards it..

You locked yourself out by upgrading the bootloader to the latest one.
Neither downgrade of bootloader would be possible, nor flashing older firmware SBF's.
Apart from that the milestone uses signature check on certain parts of the firmware. I really doubt that it's possible to tweak/recompile a complete SBF.
Something worth to try, is to flash vulnerable recovery SBF from within bootloader mode using RSDlite.
Here's the link to gitorious: http://gitorious.org/droid/openrecovery/blobs/master/zips/SHOLS/vulnerable_recovery.sbf
If the link does not work for you, there are also some mirrors of this file floating around. Just search!
I guess this should work, because the recovery SBF is using RAMLDR 90.78 (do know about the sign check during flash, but i guess checksum should be O.K.).
With vulnerable recovery properly installed, you might then use OpenRecovery to check your system and restore to some working state.
Good luck!

Thanks Scholbert for the detailed answer.
the link you gave directs to an image the RSDlite cannot flash (=error validating image).
If your interntion was that I'm supposed to flash the vulnerable recovery only, than bad news - It's already 'installed' on my device (and it shows no error whatsoever during this installation..)
Well, thanks again for trying to help, I think I'm officially out of suggestions or options here unless anyone can give further advice...

No, never did (since the upgrade)
If I had access to the recovery i would have at least managed to install OpenRecovery or something and manage to reflash the device

Did you try to fastboot flash only the boot.img? What about recovery? I seem to remember flashing a recovery.img on the dext...but this was last year. I may be wrong but i believe i flashed only a recovery image and then was able to access the recovery (which would allow all sorts of additional goodies).
I find it strange that fastboot reports only downloading. I seem to remember some error messages and timeouts?

Nope.
trying to flash the recovery / boot images only results in the message 'downloading...' and nothing (waited for like 3 hours..)
when I terminate the action by Ctrl+C and then trying again - the message is instantly 'FAILED..' along with specification that the action of sending the command has failed.
I'm literaly out of ideas, don't know what to do..

I am starting to think that there is something wrong with your device (like broken hardware).
In all my experimenting with rsd/fastboot, i did not once get a "hang". I would get checksum/signature errors, size errors, etc...but i always got some type of error code or status.
This is on 3 different Mot devices that run Android.
Sorry

The device was working fine before upgrading the bootloader, so it seems that this is not a hardware issue.
Either way - guess i'll be taking it to a lab and let them figure this out..

[TOOL] Preparing for KitKat: Return to OTA Path from any ROM

This scripted tool (Windows Only!) I have written and packaged will allow you to return back to the stock OTA path from ANY single ROM (stock or custom) you might be running or even if your device is soft bricked at the moment (without even requiring RSD Lite).
Download the zip file: http://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23487008491965516
Unpack the zip file to your PC
Install Motorola Drivers First!
Then run the TOOL file and follow the instructions to guide you
I have also included some screenshots and an Emergency Fix in case you are stuck in Fastboot for whatever reason and need to restore back to stock and then continue the tool (automatically continues from the fix).
WARNING THIS WILL COMPLETELY WIPE ALL DATA INCLUDING YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE!
MAKE SURE TO BACKUP EVERYTHING YOU NEED BEFORE USING THE TOOL OR THE EMERGENCY FIX!
The emergency utility was able to get me out of my soft brick. Thank you sir!

Stuck in TWRP Bootloop N920P With No Rom

Ok so, I kinda effed up. Originally my Play Store among other google services had been acting up and were unusable so I was troubleshooting for a fix. I tried everything except a factory reset, so of course I do that , but as I was reseting I also lost my root. It had been awhile since I rooted my phone so I followed the steps of the video I was watching. (How to Root Galaxy Note 5 on Android 6.0/6.0.1 Marshmallow!) He happens to reformat his phone in the video so I did as well, brainfarting on the fact that I would lose my backups. I start tinkering with stuff because after factory reset in the ROM I still have no access to any of the Google services. I deleted System and was gonna re-flash/use my backups (that I thought I had) to fix everything. Well, I tried downloading the stock firmware for my model but it's not flashable via Odin as it's in ZIP form, and when I attempt unzipping I get an error, tried firmware from multiple mirrors. So I tried running a custom ROM since there is a lot more support on that now. I tried the Nemesis_V3_N7-port first, it flashed succesfully, tried booting for a solid 30 minutes or so before I shut it down and tried a different rom. I think it was then or after I flashed the latest MOAR that I started bootlooping into TWRP.
Please help!! I can normally figure this stuff out once I break it, but I've been fixing this phone for the past 12 hours and have yet to find a solution.
So you wiped your phone and have no rom? so you can either bootloop, go into twrp or go into dl mode? Right?

So I think I'm gonna try and find yet another page to download from. Did you download the version for N920P, or for the N920T you have?

That would be insane man, TY!! I've been hitting every forum I could looking for a download that worked for me. I wonder why I can't access it, I'm using Chrome/Windows 10. I was abouta to go see if it worked on my old laptop but I figured it was a long shot.

All you really need to do is re flash your twrp so it will re root the phone again! After you flash twrp you can easily use adb to push the files back to your phone. This is all I did to a phone I repaired.. You can even use fastboot flash Your920PFirmware.tar..

One thing after another... So I attempted flashing and I got the "Pit for mapping" error. I looked up my Pit file and put it into odin but I'm still getting the problem. Tried wiping the Cache and Dalvik + Factory Reset but nada. Any ideas?

Dang. Hey man appreciate all your help, thank you for the file. I'll post the solution when I figure all this out in case there's another poor soul in the same boat
I FIXED IT. It was my computer, I don't know what it was and I don't care lol. But I tried the correct firmware through Odin on my other Windows PC and it worked flawlessly. If anybody runs into any issues unzipping or flashing through Odin, last resort just clean install on the pc or find another one.

[Q] Can't boot into TWRP and my phone got unrooted

Hello!
I have a Huawei Mate 9 (MHA-L29C432B190). Yesterday I tried to root my Phone to play Pokemon Go with fake gps. After I managed to root my phone, I couldn't boot into TWRP Recovery Mode anymore.
Because I still had some files I needed to flash I installed Flashfire from the PlayStore. I think after I flashed the newest Magisk version(The flash failed because of Error:1), my device got unrooted. But I think my device is still partly rooted because I can't get into Pokemon Go. Everytime I try to start it I get stuck the loading screen. So right now I can't flash anything to get my root back and I don't have the root to use alternative flash applications. I also tried to start return my phone to stock back with a update.app But it can't be installed. I also can't use "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" I always get " Writing 'recovery'...FAILED (remote:command can't be used/allowed)". And also after some reboots my oem unlock got turned off and I can't turn it on anymore.
I don't have any ideas anymore what to do. I thought I could root my device, so I could unroot properly with superuser. I tried some other application like KingRoot oder OneClickRoot but both of them don't have a rooting method for the Huawei Mate 9 yet. Btw I don't have a backup because of my naivety.
I hope you guys can help me . I appreciate any ideas
Thanks in advance

Either way I want a method to root my phone without some flash application or I want a way to return my phone to stock. Or a method to fix TWRP would be fine too.

That doesn't tell me anything. That just tells me that you tried flashing.
It doesn't tell me anything about exactly what you tried to flash or what errors you got when you flashed. I need more precise information to help you. Your simple answers aren't helping me understand anything about what you have going on with your device.
What tools have you used? What guide/instructions did you use? What files have you used? What errors did you get? What results did you get. What do mean "didn't work"? "Didn't work" can mean many things.
I might be able to help you fix your device but I can't fix ignorance.

I might be able to help you fix your device but I can't fix ignorance.
First I tried to do a force upgrade with a "dload" folder with a update.app file on my sdcard . After booting into this upgrade mode by pressing vol up + vol down + power button my device starts to install the stock firmware, but after it reaches 5% I get the message "Error with installing" and a Link to the same site when you boot into twrp. This always happens no matter which file I use. Next I tried to do a normal upgrade by calling this number "*#*#2846579#*#*" (The dload folder is still on my sdcard). But when I start the software upgrade I get booted into twrp and like I said in my post, always when I try to get into twrp I get stuck on the "Your device is booting screen". This is what I tried and basicly every site on google is saying I should try to do one of these two methods
(Here a guide for example: https://www.getdroidtips.com/full-guide-install-stock-firmware-huawei-smartphone/)
(My file in my last try: https://www.getdroidtips.com/huawei-mate-9-stock-firmware-collections/)

Stock upgrades are not going to work if you are rooted and have TWRP.
Stock updates require stock recovery and an unmodified system partition(no root).

But you have TWRP, that won't work. You need stock recovery, custom recovery can't flash stock updates.

I am not sure why you are not doing this in your device forum?

It seems that there would be more assistance specific to your device.
or did I miss something?

Stuck on the black screen - power on doesn't work, only Recovery and Download works

Hello.
I've been playing with some custom ROMs, recoveries, etc. on S10 SM-G973F. Every time something went wrong I was able to flash stock Android 11 ROM with Odin and run the system after that. But not anymore...
At this moment I have access to Recovery Mode (stock, TWRP, LineageOS... whichever I flash with Odin) and Download Mode. When I try to power on the phone with button or with an option Boot to System from Recovery the phone turns off and nothing else happens. Black screen only, no vibration, etc.
I tried to format data and cache in Stock Recovery and TWRP. I tried to flash many time, changed USB cable, change USB port... nothing helps.
What is strange that after I flash the stock recovery the phone boots one time displaying the unlocked bootloader warning, Samsung logo and Android robot icon with an Erasing sign... but just for a 1-2s, very short time. Before the problem occurred the Erasing took much much more time. After that one time I cannot make to display bootloader unlocked warning and Samsung logo any more, no matter which ROM or recovery I flash.
Maybe you can try installing the original firmware and start over again.
That is what I do in the first place, I try to flash the original firmware with Odin. I use the same files as before. The only difference I can see is that after the flashing the Erase progress was very long and now it is only 1-2s and the phone turns off.
Ok, I've found my mistake and a solution. I will post it here if anyone else has a similar problem.
So while I was playing with different ROMs one of them had an instruction to flash G973FXXSCFUH5-twrp_flashable.zip that included:
modem.bin
dt.img
dtbo.img
cm.bin
sboot.bin
up_param.bin
keystorage.bin
uh.bin
The zip included was to an older firmware G973FXXSCFUH5, while I was already on newer G973FXXSEFUJ2. But the TWRP that I used to flash the zip did not protest and the process finished well. Causing the problems above of course.
Don't know why but flashing the whole original G973FXXSEFUJ2 firmware with Odin was not enough. But when I flashed G973FXXSEFUJ2-twrp_flashable.zip from the TWRP worked and made the phone operational again.
hello, I am in the same situation after having wanted to install blastui I find myself with the possibility of starting only in dow load or in twrp. Can you help me

0. Make sure your phone is charged!
1. Check your current SW# in Download mode (the number stands for the number or letter in firmware code, the 5th sign from the end in hexadecimal, for example SW# 14 is E in G973FXXSEFUJ2_G973FOXMEFUJ2)
2. Find the proper version of bootloader and modem in ....-twrp_flashable.zip format (check here: https://github.com/corsicanu/9820-bootloaders_and_modems/releases)
3. Flash and run TWRP recovery.
4. Flash the zip file from #2.
Flashing the stock firmware with Odin was not enough for me. Flashing with TWRP made the S10 back to alive.

There is not much more to explain, just follow the steps I pointed. If any of them are not clear enough just ask, but I tried to make them as simple as possible If your English is not to well just try to use Google Translator.

Best way to go back to stock rom is simply flash it with Odin from original files available from Samsung, for example on SamMobile:

Thanks for the help brother I appreciate it
For months I've tried searching for a solution to fix my SM-N976U that stopped booting up. None of the symptoms shared fully matched what I was experiencing, so every fix I attempted didn't get her fully functioning again, eventually I gave up trying, stuffed the phone in a drawer and just bought another one. Today I stumbled upon your post and every symptom you described fit exactly with what happen to me, I mean to the T, minus the model and fw version. So I grabbed my SM-N976U one more time and followed your solution... and guess what??? I am now a proud owner of 2 note 10 plus'!!!
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and solution!! Cheers to you bud! Have a great New Year!
Thank you~! my s10 plus is back!
