[Q] What's the difference between the unlocked and T-Mobile Nexus 6? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What's the difference between the unlocked and T-Mobile Nexus 6? Do they have the same bands? Does the T-Mobile model receive updates at the same time as the unlocked model?

The only difference is where to choose to buy it from.

They are identical. The T-Mobile-sold phones are unlocked as well.

No difference. period.
I've TMobile Nexus 6

Only difference is that T Mobile includes a TMo Nano SIM in the sim tray.

Absolutely positive. T-Mobile-sold Nexus 6 devices are 100% not carrier locked.

It depends where "overseas".
If it's in the Americas, then the T-Mobile version XT1103 is just fine.
If it's in other continents you may want to consider the global version XT1100 due to the different LTE bands.
You can see the details about the LTE bands supported by each model here: http://www.motorola.com/us/consumers/nexus-6-header/Nexus-6/nexus-6-motorola-us.html#nexus-6-specs

[Q] TMobile or AT&T (No US)

Hello,
I did some research recently, and this caused a little bit of confusion, so I'll post a quick question:
I'm trying to buy this phone on ebay (since I don't have a US CC card), which one should I get, the T-Mobile or AT&T version?
Requirements:
- to unlock it for Europe GSM
- install CyanogenMod
As of now I was going for the T-Mobile, since I've read it's easier to unlock the bootloader, but now I see that the CM is only for AT&T phones? Or am I mistaking?
Thanks!
It doesn't matter any more. When you purchase from the Moto web site you ask for the GSM version. There is no more differentiation between the T-Mo and AT&T versions. You'll get the XT1053, the former T-Mo version.

Are you sure about this? Cause if you look it up, everyone is saying that the T-Mobile bootloader can be unlocked, and the AT&T can not.

Yes, me. I bought a T-Mobile Moto X in November and had to choose my carrier. I bought another Moto X last week and there was no carrier selection, I only had to choose between GSM and CDMA. Both times I received an XT1053 with a T-Mobile SIM in it.

I have no knowledge of the bootloader situation, only my experience with the purchases as noted above.

As far as AT&T bootloader goes it is still not unlockable. When it will be? Nobody really knows if Motorola is going to add it to its Unlock program.

Appears they still technically differentiate between the versions, but are upfront about the T-Mobile version working with either carrier.

Yes, it does. Looks as if they changed it again. I didn't get that selection panel when I bought one a week ago. I guess you can still get the XT1058 model for AT&T. However, if I were buying one I'm not sure why I would order the AT&T model over the GSM model based on the description. I would get the XT1053 anyway.

Maybe they were temporarily sold out of the AT&T model? There is some LTE band on the AT&T model not available on the XT1053, but if I remember that band isn't used currently by AT&T in the USA anyways. People might also want all that wonderful added value bloatware software not on the XT1053 and have the inconvenience safety of a locked SIM.

Nexus 6 radios questions

From my understanding that all nexus 6 are the same no matter what carrier you buy from or Google Play. I have Verizon. My question is.. If I buy from another carrier sprint or t-mobile and I just pop my sim in shouldn't Lte and everything else work? Or will the radio bands vary on different carriers?
I think it would be work.
So far T-Mobile confirm it that is not locked on network and it's unlock phone.
But I'm not sure about the AT&T and other carrier.

Yes, it will work if you buy from any carrier. The model droid-life received was a T-Mobile unit, but they confirmed it worked with Verizon, including 4G. (http://www.droid-life.com/2014/10/31/nexus-6-working-on-verizon-out-of-the-box/)
I just got my pre-order in on Play Store.

I don't see anywhere in the article or video where they say their N6 was a T-Mobile unit. I'd be interested to hear that vzw has imei numbers sold from T-Mobile white listed in vzw databases.
A N6 bought from play/moto/vzw should have their imei white listed for vzw, I just haven't heard that is the case with N6 sold by other carriers.

In their unboxing video, you can see the box right before they open it. and it shows the phone is for t mobile. It says "T-MOB".
Wow, that's good news, thx.

While it will work with other carriers, T-Mobile will not be selling the Nexus 6 right out at launch. Only new plan customers or current plan customers can purchase the N6 for the foreseeable future.
Your best bet is to wait for your carrier to come out with it, or try ordering from Google Play/Amazon.

The Nexus 6 is the same on all carriers. The only noticeable difference is the AT&T variant is Sim locked to AT&T. The only difference in Nexus 6 devices is the domestic and international models.

The only real difference is that the Verizon branded N6's IMEI is whitelisted on their (VZW) system. Means that you can get a SIM from them without problem, and that you will get your BYOD discount on Edge (if you pay full price).

You can use it in Turkey, but most likely you will not be able to connect to LTE. The US carriers use different bands for LTE vs the rest of the world. I'd suggest that you would be better off with the 1100 "world" model.
Edit: but the 1100 won't connect to LTE in the US. So you will have to decide where LTE service is most important. US or the rest of the world. Unfortunately, you can't have both.

I'm afraid I can't answer that, as I am in the USA. I would suggest you ask your cellular provider first. I would say that you would most likely need the international model as it has the hardware needed for the signals used in that market. XT1100 is the model number.

Unlocked T-Mobile Note 8 on Sprint

I have this same question asked in the T-Mobile forum but wasn't sure if that's the right spot.
I have been reading a lot of different things about doing this with no definitive answer. It looks like, as of recently, it should be as simple as popping in the sprint Sim card and it should work but I want to be sure before hand. Are there any downsides at all about using tmobile Note 8 on Sprint?

To be truthful, there is most likely no downsides of using a Tmobile Samsung Galaxy Note 8 on the Sprint Network. You should be good to go! :good:
It won't work unfortunately. I also believed it was as simple as sticking an Activated Sprint SIM in the T-Mo N8, but Sprint has a different system. Another user was having issues with a VZW N8, so I did some research, and even though hardware wise they are all the exact same phone, Sprints system will only accept IMEIs from Sprint N8s and factory unlocked N8s. An IMEI from any other carrier will not activate.
So glad I have T-Mobile.

There have been others that successfully activates...it will just show a generic pic and some features may not work...otherwise Sprint's byod would be a bust...some iemi's might not be accepted do to contract issues, or being internationally unlocked instead of SIM unlocked...other issues may be the cause as well..but others with ATT, Verizon, and T-Mobile devices have activated on Sprint or other carrier with just a SIM...adding IEMI to Sprint database just ensures working features...although, some have had to use a non-active Sprint IEMI to activate their non-Sprint device...still, less fuss with swapping out to a Sprint or factory unlocked device...good luck

Not according to another Sprint user here. He tried everything and it wouldn't work. Do some research, especially on Reddit. Unless it's an unlocked 950U1 or a Sprint Note 8, it will not activate on their network.
I thought the same as you, until I researched it.

Sprint's website states that BYOD is only accepting IMEIs from the Special Edition of the Note 8...no carrier restrictions...same as S8 and S8+...that restriction may lift after acceptable number of sales of Sprint devices...(1yr later)...but no help now...
Changing imei as I suggested before does not work for Sprint either...just gsm carriers...at least the paid service....and I do research all the time...and if you get a rep that will do it...they can...they just won't because of proprietary sales restrictions...according to Sprint's internal whitesheets...more reliable than online blogs...I have gotten Sprint to Activate a Verizon S7 edge when they weren't supposed to...you just have to go through hoops....they are picky with newer devices though...power with persuasion....
If anyone is still wondering, if you flash the (all carrier no bloat ware) unlocked version of the Note 8 firmware it will work with Sprint. You just need a compatible Sprint sim card. That sim card model number needed is 416Q, same as Galaxy S8 sim.

I just had a chat with Sprint online support. They we're able to load my Unlocked Tmo branded Note 8 IMEI to the system. They said it is ready for activation. I will pickup a Sprint Sim card later today or tomorrow and report back.
I can confirm that T-Mobile Note 8 will work on Sprint. When I put the new Sprint Sim in it change the splash page and add Sprint apps. It removed all T-Mobile apps
Do you have access to all the Sprint bands?
Which SIM did you buy and where?
Just ordered my two Sprint Kickstarter Sim cards. Should be here on Tuesday, porting in from T-MOBILE. Will be using them on our TMO Note 8 devices.

I think the phone has all bands. I also tried my Verizon Sim card from my work phone and the Note 8 downloaded all of the Verizon apps and I was able to make calls. It even showed the Verizon splash screen when I turned it on.
Here is a pic of the Sim card packaging. I got it from my local Sprint store.
All works fine. Or so it seems. Connected to band 41 I think currently. Amazing how the Note 8 reconfigure itself.

Not bad, not as fast as TMO but then again not as expensive. $15 is $15 , right?
Sometimes, my browsing slows right down. Even on hand 41. Loading pages like BBC etc, it stalls.

I must agree with you. The network is a lot slower than T-Mo. I have a Sprint branded G7 I got from Swappa and it performs the same as T-MO Note 8 I ported over. For $15 per month I can't complain either.
Indeed, we get what we pay for. I'd however never spend $60 plus on Sprint unlimited plan if it were like this.
Moral of story, Sprint ain't worth more than $20 per month.

I have a T-Mobile Note 8 on boost. I just had to buy a new sim from Boost!

taking a verizon sim to an unlocked nexus 6.

sorry for the noob question but i have not bought a carrier locked phone since nexus 4 days. usually opt for 'bring your own device' and just buy a sim card. nexus 6 was bought from play store. i am now living in a remote location and only verizon has a decent signal. wanted to get verizon prepaid service but their website says nexus 6 is not supported. ended up buying one of their cheap phones 'moto e5 play' and using it for a week.
my question is what will happen if i take the sim card from moto and try to use it in nexus 6? will it work? will verizon recognize the nexus and stop working? will this somehow mess up my service which i can't afford to loose?
thanks.
Have you tried? https://www.verizonwireless.com/prospect/bring-your-own-device/#/
"I'm not with Verizon"
yes before i got the moto i tried 'bring your own device' but the website checked and said nexus 6 not supported.
It will work perfectly. Every model of the nexus 6 has the same cell bands. Verizon just tells you that it is unsupported because Verizon prefers their customers to have all the carrier bloatware on their phones. All unlocked Google phones from the nexus 6 up will work on any major United states carrier.
update:
i tried using the verizon sim in the nexus 6. within 3 minutes after reboot verizon recognized the device is different and downgraded the LTE signal to cdma level 3G. basic text could be sent but voice calls were constantly dropped. tried for like 10 minutes including couple of reboots with disappointing results. put the sim back in moto and everything is back to normal.
conclusion: when verizon detects a different IMEI for the device, you get downgraded to 3G or worse.

Not true and misinformation here. Firstly, the original post doesn't clarify whether it is xt1100 (EU) or xt1103 (US) version of N6. Only the US version will work with all service providers here. The European version doesn't have Bands 2 and 4, ones necessary for Verizon and it's MVNOs, like Total Wireless.
I even patched b2 and b4 on my xt1100 to use it here in the US. Even then, I don't get signal for Verizon. So, safe bet would be to buy or have the US version. Then whatever you originally suggested will hold true.

Depends on your model. See my reply below. I am in the same boat as you are, but with Total Wireless (MVNO on Verizon). XT1103 didn't pose any issue for me in the past. But my current XT1100 didn't work.
i have the us version. xt1103
