AdAway/AdBlocker preventing normal surfing.... - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to use ad blocking on my note 4, I've tried adblocker which requires me to run a proxy through its server.
AdAway alters the host file.
Adaway seems to prevent normal browsing? I guess most web sites redirect through some type of ad site?
Adblocker proxy seems to slow down my Wi-Fi connection or i didn't have it setup right, and without running thru the proxy I'm guessing it doesn't work? So based on that I'm guessing it doesn't work while on cellular data?
Is anyone successfully using a global ad blocker? Pop-up blocker? Add if so, which one?

Adaway works perfectly for me, it does not interfere with web browsing at all.
The best part of Adaway is that it works with internet ads as well as all the ads
which we see on the "free apps and games" which we install from the playstore.
Most of the better custom roms come with adaway, so it must be good!
(adaway cannot be gotten from the play store)
Perhaps you are trying to use Adaway in conjunction with the browsers popup
blocker enabled at the same time and thats what is causing your issue.
Good luck!

I am using Adaway with no issues. I tried the Ad-Blocker app from playstore and that blocked my browser from accessing most of the sites.

Yes there is . Just dont use any apps with ads and dont browse the internet . On a serious note I would just root . Basically everything you can do thats actually cool and useful with Android and everything on this site Requires Root. Just root your device !

Still not sure if i want keep this phone cause i see there are alot of problem. Kind feel afraid

Here's an example of adaway interfering with surfing. This is a post here on xda, I want this file to flash. I'm running adaway with the web server enabled.
But I can't go to the link from tapatalk on my note 4, it's obviously redirecting thru an ad site that adaway is blocking.
I got tired of long pressing to get to menu so I made a flashable zip to make recents button the menu button.Make a backup to go back to undo this mod if you want to go back. This only tested on T-Mobile N910T<br />

Just disable adaway thru the app and download the file and re-enable..

Adaway is doing its job if it's blocking that redirect. What you really want us a smart ad blocker that reads your mind. But since no such blocker exists, you might have to disable it every now and then to get to what you want.
I run 4 ad blockers on my Firefox laptop. The Internet truly amazing without ads. However sometimes you have to let an ad through to get what you want.

I've looked myself and have found nothing to replace th one two. Though some browsers such as UC browser have built in ad blockers. UC does a decent job of catching a lot of the ads.

Go to adblockplus.org on your phone and download that apk. You can create new apn settings if you plug in the adblock proxy on it. You will also have to configure the proxy on any WiFi network you connect to.

Any way to edit/modify/add APN's? Adblocking needed!

Without root, I cant use AdAway.
So I'm left to make do with AdBlock Plus.
for Wifi, setting up the manual proxy is easy, and adblocking is working great as long as I'm connected to Wifi.
but while i'm on 3g/4g, I still see ads. I need to make the necessary edits and setup the proxy, but I cant seem to edit or add a new APN. Any way to do this without root?
or, anyone know of any other efficient way of blocking ads on the Turbo?
really? I didnt feel any change using ABP. All my games were showing ads...
Is there a tip or trick to it?

Well, you can use Adblock Plus, but many don't like it (me included) as it has its issues.
I'm running without one except for browsing, I use the paid version of Lightning, it blocks ads very efficiently and is a very good browser, too.
For all else I'm waiting for root
Thanks for the reply. I did try adblock plus was giving me problems too I'll give lightning a go

i hate ads on mobile devices, but chromes compression proxy works very fine. it almost lower my data 1/3 when browsing. so external proxys for ad block is no solution.
if you want good ad blocker, that creates hosts file, you need root.
Adblock edge on firefox is nice too. Firefox for android is surprisingly fast.
try UC browser
Now browser material pro, specifically that version as well since theres various versions of now browser. Look for ad block on the app description to be sure.
Also Javelin browser. It loads pages in the background in a widget overlay that appears as a dot on the screen. I find that annoying and it can be turned off in the settings. I have a reference number to gift it to two people so first 2 to grab it can have it: http://javelinbrowser.com/gift/4Osgq/
The first browser runs much lighter on the battery but it's been quite some time since I ran Javelin and it may have been improved since then.
Both of these browsers have been featured in xda if I remember correctly. Both, I think, need ad blocking enabled in settings. I just checked Javelin and I think it is the case for Now Browser as well; used to be part of the first run set up.

Wh00t? Firefox has to be the slowest laggiest browser on the platform. My experience.
UC HD is the best overall atm IMHO.

I've been using Naked Browser all the way back to my Nexus S days. It has a great adblock built in, and it's very quick.
in my opinion adblock doesn't work without root successfully.
only with root and adaway i am happy.

Hi,
I'm seriously tempted by the Z5 compact (I have a Nexus 5 ATM), but I'd want root access mainly to use an ad-blocker (my preference is AdAway) - is this possible on the Z5?
I didn't think root could be achieved without some serious compromises?
Thanks for any info
Let me tell you about my config.
I think it keeps most of the bad guys out.
- Firefox with Add-ons
- Blu hell firewall - the desirable lightness of Bluhell balances with good performance
- Clean links - cleans & resolves URLs that have been shortened or proxied
- Self-destructing cookies - protects against trackers and zombie-cookies
- HTTPS-everywhere - what's in a name
- DuckDuck Go - the search engine that doesn't track you
Try it, you'll like it.
Adguard
No root, almost perfection.
Theres no other adblock thats as good. Adaway as we know is root only and leaves big gaps where the ad should have been.
Adguard does not.
The only annoying thing is persistent notification.
I use Dolphin browser and an Adblock addon it is great
CAF Chromium Browser has built in Ad Blocker, ist basend on Chromium and optimized for Snapdragon Prozessors.
It's really fast and Ab Blocker is working great.
NetGuard supports ad blocking since 0.77

Adhell

Has anyone been able to successfully run Adhell Adhell 2 on Note 8? Like actually having it block ads? I installed Adhell2 but it doesn't install ads. It sucks but this is one of the main reasons I liked Galaxy phones.

It's not compatible yet, We have to wait for the developers to update it. It causes restarts and other issues.
I use DNS66 and added the two OpenDNS free servers to it. it works perfectly. Haven't seen an ad yet when using Chrome Canary! They also seem to have cut down on YouTube ads as well. Which is saying something because YouTube LOVES to put ads in most of their videos..

Didn't work for me. Ads still showing in Chrome. Did you do anything else other than adding OpenDNS servers?

I did add two custom host files but that shouldn't matter. I turned them off and it's still blocking ads. I do use Chrome Canary though which is different than the stock Chrome that comes with our phones. It's an alpha release and is ALWAYS updated just about every day. Sometimes it crashes because the devs are trying new things but they usually fix it within a day. Until they fix it I then run Chrome beta. I never use stock Chrome.
As for the setup? All you have to do is make sure the host files that came with DNS66 are updated before you start the task. Click the "reload button" in the upper right hand corner then wait...once they are updated then press start. Here are screenshots of a web site I go to called "Project Free TV" It's HEAVY on ads. You can see what it looks like with DNS66 on and with it off. It's DEFINITELY working.
P.S. Make sure you add it to the ignore list or "white list" of apps NOT to kill if you're using a task killer like Advance Task Manager or Greenify.
I'm using BlockThis 3.0. It's like adguard and uses a VPN. The only downside is that stupid key icon. It's free and blocks ads well. The others are hit and miss and seem to be selectively blocking ads which is annoying to say the least. Now if they stopped youtube ads...
This is not on the play store but easily found.

I'm loathe to use any VPN tool that is not open source. You never know what traffic from your phone is sent to what server. Also VPNs in general take a toll on battery. I really hope Adhell can be fixed for Note 8

It's done locally, so there are no risks to your privacy. VPN is a little more battery hungry compared to DNS blocking, but Adguard doesn't leave empty blocks everywhere like other adblockers do.

I know the vpn server is technically done locally but basically the app has access to ALL of the network traffic to/from your phone so it can do whatever with it and unless it's open source, I personally am not comfortable.
This is a good read. Might help someone out.

Yup I second this. BlockThis 3.0 has been working great so far with no issues for me.
I use Blokada, it blocks 99% of ads without root. I've installed it on all my employees phones too and they all love it. It's internal VPN based and open source.

There's the last page of the thread. Right now the dev is busy with life but is still trying to develop a working Ad Hell 2 for the Note 8. It looks like it is working for some but there is a reboot issue.
I've had Adhell 2 working on my Note 8 for over a week now, no reboots either..

Ad blocker for One UI 5?

Hey!
I have been using AdGuard VPN so far but apparently it is not working anymore on Android 13. There is a problem with creating VPN connection.
It will probably take some time for the developers to fix that.
Since I'm not really used to using any other ad blocker what ad blocker are you guys using?
Thank you!
Preferrably for saving storage space and all: i directly change my device's DNS to one that is able to block ads on the go.
There are plenty, like
dnsforge.de
dns.adguard.com
libredns.gr
blahdns.com
and etc.

I will give all of them a try.
I use this app:
Blokada - the popular mobile adblocker and VPN for Android and iOS
Keep all your devices protected with Blokada content filtering and encryption.
blokada.org
Free blokada 5 (cloud less) version.
It still works for me on v3.6.10
AdGuard DNS is the best solution in my experience so far.
Blokada 5 made my phone sluggish, don't know why...
AdGuard DNS config made the pages take a long time to load...
AdGuard app is the best option for me so far. I'm running Android 13.
The version of Adguard I was using no longer works on the s20 somehow, it was fine a day ago
Adaway works fine on OneUI 5 in the root based side of things, not heard anything about the non root version not working on A13.
