Helium: No Root, Tethered, Cloud/SD Backup, Phone to Phone Sync, Portal for PC/Mac DL - Droid Ultra Themes and Apps

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup
Edit: I upgraded to 23.3.24 and it no longer connects to my Mac!!!
But this works http://forum.xda-developers.com/droid-ultra/general/root-kingroot-4-4-4-su-6-7-t3117552
100% WORKING without root!! For data apps & app data! Seems the latest 1.1.4.0 update may have overcome many issues on our phone-contrary to the Wiki notice about Moto incompatibility.
Seems it is not ready for Lollipop w/o root, see best comment, below.
The Ultra reviews are stellar while the Moto X are not so.
I am in the middle of a 2 Hr +, 138 data apps including their data, Google drive upload.
My Maxx: 444, 21.11.12, premium version:1.1.4.0. I have a Mac, OS x Lion, though once connected w/usb debugging, a computer is not needed until the next reboot.
Why is tethering needed? From the 1st reddit link:
[–]JonnyShipsXperia Z3 D6616, TM-USA 11 points 17 days ago
The program is necessary. There's a bug that he's exploited with adb backup so that if you enter adb shell from a computer you can run adb backup from an arbitrary app.
I'm surprised Google hasn't closed it yet.
Wow! I uninstalled a few lesser used apps after the long BU. They restored great, data too.:good::good::good:. They show up in G Drive with a check box just as in the app.
Did a PC download BU to my Mac via Chrome. All good-1.2 MB/sec!!
When doing a Chrome portal restore, you must choose to restore all or nothing. Choose browse button, select your backup.zip, wait for ALL apps to show up!--which I tested & works fine-3 app test restore.
While the Google drive/other cloud options allow "any or all", which is much better.:good::good:
Notes:
I thought portrait display mode was needed to see the buttons at bottom. Not so, a swipe up reveiles them.
Edit: It is fickle about showing them in landscape.
Check automation in Helium settings.
I do not use any encryption.
DropBox goes the same as Google Drive.
There were 7 apps that bombed out in the first UL. Helium earmarked them for a retry & they all went ok!!
For unencrypted cloud: Do not override the encryption key entry, pre-restore (or backup), screen! If you force the right selection with your finger the restore bombs out! Lol! Just let it go & the right (restore my data) is auto selected.

Bug! Lol. Small text BTW.
OTG seems to be not supported.
Seems Chrome may be the browser to use for the WiFi portal (PC download).

Seriously, scan throught the rest of the comments here for hate against the developer rather than the app - I'm sure they will hat it works, let alone even TRY it.
If you want an honest and more reliable opinion, scan through the google play reviews, or even reviews made by reliable android websites. Sure there are people too that have problems getting it to work (and some of the others are giving bad reviews for things that isn't even Heliums fault), and Koush isn't really known for a good support I give you that. But judging from reviews it seems as the majority got it to work. So much for that exception to the rule, eh?
Also Helium isn't anything more than a simple GUI to Googles own ADB backup and yes it IS sometimes unrealiable (and always was from my experience), so there is nothing about that Helium could fix.
From my test right now it does indeed seem to NOT work on Android 5.0/Lollipop (without root atleast), so I won't get my hopes up for the future of the app... unless for some reason Koushik will really maintain the app

Here is an X thread from a year ago. I am not sure any of it still applies to the current version. If any, it might have the zip restore from the Chrome WiFi portal/PC download
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49285478&postcount=1
Please post if you use it to restore or phone to phone sync, outcome & phone build etc.

Anyone use it for a full restore or the like?
Edit, I just restored, from dropbox,136 apps w/data, all good.

Damn!
No longer works on 23.3.24, the chrome / Helium app will not communicate with each other.

Well
I think Chrome even if it´s not a beta anymore, it´s a very young browser, fast in fact but very limitated in other functions, maybe in a couple of years is going to be a great option, but by now I´ll stick to the majestic Opera!
nice browser ... shame its not on mac yet
Oh well,. yeah,. thanks for the info guys!!,. i am downloading now,. hehe,. last time i download before i format my PC, it say Google Chrome BETA,.
Some issues I run into (I've used it since day one of it's release to the public):
Flash videos work off and on. This seems to be consistent, I will go to play a youtube video and will need to restart the browser because the audio or video will not play.
Spellcheck sucks.
Very few add on's. Add on's are what make firefox so great.
Some pages just do not interact well with Chrome. If you go to a lot of message boards you know what I mean.
Highlighting anything is a PIA. Many times you will will try to highlight one individual word and end up with long blank fields. When you copy and paste it then just comes up blank with the whole field minus the word...WTF??
Other then those few things it's a great browser and I use it full time for work and play.
Ive got a portable version if anyone is interested and doesnt want to actually install it.
Send me a pm if you fancy it
I.M.O not enough to it yet, security wise i can beef up Firefox, don't like Google policies & i need a browser that works efectively on UMPC so Firefox 3 it is...
One of co workers installed chrome on my computer at work so I gave it a try. I started using it more and more since it starts up in half the time IE, or Firefox does. Since then I've been using it ever since. I don't need the fancy plug-ins from firefox and IE just plain sucks. Easy choice IMO.
Also its no longer in beta.
I would recommend switching to "SRWare Iron" as it is Chrome without all the Spyware Crap that Google put into the Browser (Unique ID, constantly running updater and stuff like that).
It is based on Chromium, which is the base for Google Chrome.
It even looks and handles the same as Chrome & Chromium...
I used Chrome since the beta because I preferred the look of it.
Thanks to this thread - I'm now using SRWare Iron which I'll keep an eye on too..
Cheers.

Oh, thankyou, so now i am not wrong if google chrome ever have a beta version,. lol
After I using Iron for a week I switched back to chrome. Spellcheck doesn't work, and its slower to load pages. The privacy issue isn't a problem because there are programs which remove your unique ID and you can simply disable sending google your browsing information in the options menu. The only thing that Iron has going for it over Chrome is a better looking icon.
Chrome Rocks!
I to have been using google chrome since the earlly beta.
to clear things up, There are two version available. Stable releases and a "developer" version (which is like a beta version.)
Personally i love the broswer for its speed but like already mentioned, it doesn't like all websites. I can't stand IE so i keep firefox around incase i have problems. Things are getting beter all the time for chrome though (for example it used to be almost useless for facebook and now its basically fully compatible) I'm proud to say its my default browser
This became a POLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
See the top if you know any other tell me! to include it!
Ok, voted already,.
What da...????
Who includes the Internet explorer 8 beta that dont includes the link to the download?
Come on guys... share it share it share it....!

should i use ANTIvirus and ANTI malware?

should i use ANTIvirus and ANTI malware?
on my PC i have kaspersky and Malware bytes
should i have something similar on my android phone?
This should not be necessary as long as you don't use any files from unknown sources. For example only use the market to install applications, only copy files from your pc to your phone (they will be scanned on your pc), and as usual be careful for attachments in your mailbox. Check where they come from and if you receive "sexy girls.bat" from anyone (even a friend) don't open it...
You can always connect phone in mass storage mode and run kaspersky on the two memory cards .

cheers

-also the scan with kaspersky was a great idea

I'm resurrecting this thread since I read the article on here about dodgy virus market apps
I couldn't find it again to post it.
But do I need a security program on my phone
if so whats good or are there any free ones?
cheers
i use 'MyLookout' its a free app (also a paid version) and everytime something new is put onto the phone, MyLookout will automatically scan it for malware, its a really good app.
also another advantage of this app, is you can do backups to the cloud.
And another thing. If your device was to go missing, you can simply log on to the website MyLookout.com from your PC or another Phone, there you can switch on GPS, track the Phone down, perform a full wipe, lock the device, Sound an alarm on the phone which cannot be turned off.
and the best feature, is you can select an option so the app will not uninstall, so the thief who took your phone, cannot uninstall the app. Meaning you can always keep tracking it down
you can do all this from any PC / Mobile
Dr Web antivirus light is nice too

No just don't install sketchy apps.
Then again I don't use AV on my PC's either...it has proven useless in the past as it doesn't keep up with the attackers quickly enough. These days I go with a 'perimeter defense', keep the hostile code from running on the machine in the first place rather than running every damn thing and counting on some program to be current enough to save me.
Kaspersky Mobile Security is the best
Though i'm not using it right now.
I use lookout and find it excellent, though as others rightly say your phone is not nearly as vulnerable as your pc and by following common sense behaviour you should be totally fine. Give lookout a try as it includes lost phone detection and wiping too.

Why should I care about malware when I flash the phone every two weeks!!
(sometimes less time)
I don't, because I want to maintain maximum performance and battery life. Plus I'm not sure how effective any of the products are.
I must say though, I am a lot more careful about reading permissions and installing untested apps these days, after reading about the droid-dream malware etc.
nipip: lol true, same here
What about NetQin
Galaxy S XWJVB
And where to get kaspersky from? its not in the market
Galaxy S XWJVB
I use Lookout and have been very happy with it. Sure it may be a placebo at this moment. But as smartphones become the net access tool of choice for more people, malware will get worse as time goes by.
Plus I feel those people who say they can avoid trouble on their phones and even PCs by just not downloading "dodgy" code are massively underestimating the asshats out there and the ways that harmful code can be hidden. If you open a PDF or even a website, you ARE vulnerable.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
Concerning to performance issue, I do not think it's a good idea to use an antivirus app

[Tool] Fix Test Mode

[METHOD 1]
After flashing a fresh tot back to your device, you should have factory reset the device. This will get you out of test mode.
[METHOD 2]
So you have a ton of data and don't want to factory reset. Then use this tool.
This is a screenshot of a good run..

Tool is live, it only works for the VS910 software. Please DO NOT attempt to use it on just any phones.
If you use this tool can you please leave feed back thanks.
Fixed! It was amazingly fast, and I am now out of test mode! I can mount usb to my computer now, and the long-press # menu is gone. Woohoo!!
wow
that was very quick...how long did u have this up your sleeves? you pretty muched saved me from getting another phone because i wire tether alot and test mode prevented me from ever connecting to the computer
I've known sense day one haha sad I know but I dont really visit the revolution forum. The whole reason I did was from the front page.
Please post with your results. There have been well over 100 downloads and it would be great if at lest 10% of you posted your results for others to see.
Any issues your having etc this way I can start seeing the success rate thanks.

Oh. MY. GOD.
It really works!!
My girlfriend's phone was always stuck in test mode even if i flash new tot.
Thank you so much!! You are my hero!
Thanks for your feedback. The more people who leave feed back the better. This way we can see if its working across all phones. I'm 100% sure it should but you never know.
No luck for me. I tried it on windows XP (with .NET framework 4 installed) and the program just crashes every time I try to run it. The microsoft "send error report" dialog appears but the application never starts up all the way.
Are there any other prerequisites other than .NET 4?
I'm an idiot and built with client profile. So install dotNet 4 Client version.
The new version is dotnet 3.5 none client and will support MS910 Esteem from MetroPCS
The only issue is the report of who needed this came from androidforums and sense i'm not a fan of them for banning me for misleading staff.. I'm not sure i'm going to post it just yet. I really only want this for xda members and might have to come up with a method that will require them to be an XDA member.
I did just try this again on windows 7 (not my computer so I'm unsure about the software on it) and it worked perfectly! I'm now out of test mode! Thanks!
Great thanks.
Mannn121, doesn't have a enough post count but was very nice to pm about his success as well. Seems like a very good success rate so far.

is the link down?
I did notice one negative side effect... either that or I've forgotten the sequence to enter that "hidden menu".
Entering ##lgservicemenu doesn't seem to work anymore after running the fix... It's not a big deal but worth mentioning...
Is there another way to access it?
I'm having a problem. After about 100 times of reconnecting the usb cord, I finally get the computer to recognize the ports in device manager and reveal which one is the revo, when I open the program, it quickly states in red that my phone isn't a revo and auto closes....any ideas?

Help! 4.2 update erased my bookmarks!

All of my bookmarks have been erased by the 4.2 update! Is there anything I can do to get them back? I am talking about the local bookmarks.
Actually, the update erased everything related to my browser: bookmarks, saved passwords, search options etc.
Chrome Browser?
Did you get OTA update or did you do something to get it?
Stock browser. OTA, just popped out of nowhere (didn't even know 4.2 was out until it showed) and I thought "why not"? Well that answers why not. I do have a backup of the bookmarks but it's over 2 months old and many are missing, probably lost forever unless someone here has any ideas on how to get them back. The missing bookmarks were the result of many hours of web searches I did at some point researching a topic and I'd really hate to think of all that wasted time. I never imagined an update would erase my bookmarks, it never happened with previous ones.
(I could never figure in titanium backup how to do scheduled backups of the bookmarks only and nothing else)

Do you happen to have the same Book Marks on your Phone or maybe your Computer. Do you use Chrome Browser on your Computer... If not i recommend it. It as well other desktop / phone browsers will give you the option to sync them across devices.. I LOVE This feature.
Now as far it being a near end of earth catastrophe About loosing book marks. It has happened to me in the past. I just had to search for the sites i use again. I also found i had way more book mark sites then i actually use.
I think this is what the above comment meant about . Just go back to the sites and Re add them.. Some of the Inter-webs and company links are not so easy and i do feel for you for loosing them..
Good Luck.. Chrome will not get them back but could prevent this in the future..

I don't use chrome. I have tried hard to like it, and failed. It is counterintuitive for me.
Like I said, those bookmarks were the result of many hours of research (product availability for a narrow niche market, very hard to find). I didn't have them anywhere else. I guess I will have to waste more hours to find them again.
Anyway, the 4.2 update gets a big thumbs down from me.

For future reference, there are are apps in the play store that will back up your bookmarks.
I've lost plenty of bookmarks myself over the years. Until I started backing them up with

Like I said, I use Titanium Backup and it does a good job at it, but I haven't figured out how to make it regularly backup my bookmarks only. I don't want to do a full system backup on a daily basis. I backup the bookmarks manually, but I have to remember doing that. The last time I remembered was on Sept 29th.
Another app I tried, Bookmark Sort&Backup has the nasty habit of reversing the order of my bookmarks every time I start it. (yeah I know, just run it twice) It has no automation built in it either, so all operations have to be done manually. Comes down to memory again.
That would be something nice to see in titanium... The closest you can get is to schedule
A backup for modified data. But it backs up all modified data, not individual apps.
(Pro version)
(Edit) Just realized that TB does backup individual apps with modified
Data on a schedule... If you create a filter for just that app.
I use chrome and all my bookmarks are still there. However on one game it cleared my history of winning games. No big deal.

Programming Tasker from your Laptop or PC

Even on the fairly generous display of my Nexus 6, working in Tasker can be a bit tedious, especially over protracted periods of time. I like a full sized keyboard and a mouse. I like being able to develop ideas on my laptop with multiple monitors; work in multiple full featured editors; move things around to suit my whims; cut and paste text and files as the need arises.
I have an HP Elitebook running Win10. The N6 is not rooted. Currently, the display of my N6 is mirrored to a window on my laptop (which I can resize[!]). The laptop keyboard and mouse now work with my N6. From my PC I can do anything on my N6 from change settings, to cut 'n paste, to move files and to program and test Tasker in its native environment. Want to know how? It's easy. I had this set up in about 3 minutes.
This is all thanks to a Chrome extension call Vysor (by ClockworkMod).

There are a few drawbacks, most notably with a little display latency. But depending what hardware you are using, how many things you have running at once and how you've configured, your mileage will probably vary. Me? I'm happy.
Sorry about the link. I'm new to the forum. Need a few more posts before URLs are enabled. But I just thought I would add that I am working on an organization chart and a flow-control flowchart for organizing more complex Tasker projects. I need this stuff or I get lost and run down rabbit trails.
I'm a pretty visually oriented kind of guy. That is one reason that Vysor has proven to be valuable to me. I can have my word processor with the charts and development notes open, XML displayed in Notepad++, two File Explorer windows for easily transferring files, cut 'n paste available so I can grab from my lists of Profile, Tasks and Variable names and Audacity open for making quick, down and dirty notification MP3s (like voicing over a Star Trek 'incoming message' sound effect with, "Captain, you have a voice message".) OK, I'm a little geeky.

I just checked the article again. No problem. Let's try this another way. Have you looked for the Chrome extension Vysor? The article "By Jack Wallen | August 28, 2015, 4:11 AM PST" says in part:
From the Chrome browser, go to the Vysor page, click ADD TO CHROME, and then click Add (when prompted). Now, if you click the Apps button (upper left corner of the Chrome window, under the bookmark toolbar), you should see the Vysor app ready to launch.
Prepping your device
In order for this to work, you must enable USB debugging on your Android device. This is simple. First, you must enable Developer options. Here's how:
Open Settings
Locate and tap About Phone
Locate Build number
Tap Build number seven times
Tap the back button
Locate and tap the newly added Developer options
To enable USB debugging, do the following:

Plug your device, via USB, into the computer running Vysor. Once connected, click on the Chrome Apps button, and then click on the Vysor launcher. A new window will appear with a Find Devices button. Click that button, and your device should instantly appear

Teamviewer works too to do the same job
Hi philippe734 and thanks. TeamViewer is a great piece of software. But it is a little overkill for this purpose. It is also cloud based and therefore presents certain security concerns. I didn't know if you were aware, but InfoSecurity, the online magazine, has linked TeamViewer with the ransomware, Surprise! http://www.infosecurity-magazine.com/news/surprise-ransomware-spreading-via/
I'm no security expert, but I'm using Vysor over a USB link from within Chrome. My home network has no WiFi router and my Cloud account is pretty much a one-way proposition. I try to keep everything local except those things I upload to share or conversely, to put out of reach of anyone that might take possession of my phone (such as dashcam videos and other types of recordings).
