Notifications on AOSP with NULL_ ROM - Samsung Galaxy Gear

There is much on the internet on how to get notifications working on AOSP, but nothing seems to actually work.
After much time and trial and error, I have found an app that allows me to see SMS only on the Galaxy Gear with NULL_ rom installed.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gnst.app.eventmirror
You need to install it on both the phone and watch
Please let me know if you got anything else working!

Tablet talk and SWapp link are both on the play store and work well. Tablet talk is good for SMS/MMS and calls. SWapp link can do that + other notifications. Sprocket is also available for SMS.
Does Tablet Notifier work on the gear for other notifications as well or just SMS?

It seems to only work for SMS, although the app says it will work for other apps as well.
I couldn't get SWapp link to work at all. Followed all the instructions and everything. Anything I am missing?
It would be nice to get all app notifications.

I had no problem getting SWapp link working. I ran the app/setup process on my phone first and then repeated on my Gear. Swapp link just feels like it needs a little more polish and battery life could be improved. I'm sure there are variances from device to device but it seems to be working ok.
The main problem I am having with the notifications is that they don't sync. For example, if I mark a notification as read on the watch, it never gets marked that way on the phone....the notification LED remains lit and the notification is still in the shade. The same is true when I read a notification on the phone....it still shows as unread on the watch. I also wish missed notifications on the watch showed up in the notification shade. There is no obvious way to tell on the watch that you've missed a notification.
Lastly, many of the remote functions (e.g. google voice, show notification, remote launch app) are blocked by the lockscreen. With my old phone (Galaxy S3) showing a notification would automatically unlock the device and show the notification (I only use slide to unlock). With my G3, the lockscreen has to be bypassed manually.

[APP] Gear Getter - based off Pebble Notifier - v1.2 <No More Development>

UPDATED - v1.2 removes the double messages from some apps, fixes another bug.
I wanted a way to get other notifications to the Gear without having to run another client app on the Gear.
There is another project (ATN) that initially used the Email notification to do this. I liked this approach because it was simple, used the gear manager as the delivery mechanism, and the Email notification app on the gear which is robust enough to handle long notifications.
I reached out to Dattas Moonchaser, who wrote the popular Pebble Notifier to see if I could use his app as my base. He obliged so here it is....
Install this on your phone, there is nothing to install on the Gear. The only thing you need to know is to go into Accessibility settings and give Gear Getter permissions (it has a big RED link for this when you launch the app). Also make sure you have Email notification checked in the Gear Manager.
Here are some better instructions - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47449016&postcount=119
Once you enable Accessibility you are able to setup your apps you want to receive notifications from. Couple cool things..
- There is the ability to setup filters
- Ability to setup quiet times
- There is tasker integration (I haven't messed with this)
- This reads the data from the expanded view so you should get pretty robust notifcations
- Easy on the battery
If you feel the need to donate, please do it from the app, and it will go to Dattas who would appreciate it.

Quick question..
I did not install anything yet but I wanted to understand this. Do we install on both the gear and the phone ?
Where does it pull information from ?
I never used the app before, I just wanted some more info before I experiment with it.
And does it require 4.3 ?
Thanks
Can you read the notifications from the gear with this ?.

You only install it on the phone, there is nothing to install on the gear. It uses the built in Email notification on the gear to display the notifications.
You tell it which apps you want to receive notifications from on your gear.
This doesn't require 4.3, but the Gear Manager does (which this uses).

This send notifications from your phone (for the applications you select) to the gear, using the Email notification on the gear to display them.
Thanks, checking it out. I want to see if I can get Instagram notifications. I will report back.
So far so good! Gmail is sending full subject and body of emails! However, when you click "Show On Device" it launches the stock email client instead of gmail. It sounds like that's because it uses the email notification methods.

Great! The logic for getting the notification details is pretty battle tested so I would expect the content it sends to the gear to be pretty good and mostly match what you would see in an expanded notification on your phone.
The Show On Device I don't think I will get to be able to actually work to open the app on the phone....
Tried twice to install apk and it crashes my Note 3, it reboots on it's own and the apk is not installed .
Strange it doesn't do anything at my end.. I do not get any notifications. Could possibly show a short video of how it works??? Do I need to select the Email in Gear Manager .. Cause I aint getting any Noti's....

Yes, you need Email selected in Gear Manager for it to work
Mmmm ok like ATN was in the first place??
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Under FilterList in the settings it states Pebble. FYI.
Ok, this does not work for me. Although it is probably because I running an S4 on 4.2 so far. Waiting for the update to be online.
I'll have to wait for the update to get me to 4.3 for the gear manager to work properly. I have limited functionality still
UPDATE : Well, email does not work, only get recipients name showing, but on the other hand, texting works (using sms pro)
But everything displays double, I mean I see the text and who is from and then under s separator I see it again with just a bit smaller fonts. Don't know why, maybe a setting I need to play with ?
I am glad at least for the texts for now.
Ok strange , after i boot into stock rom and then back to rom slot i installed .

LOL thanks, must have missed that one... It will work for the Gear even though it says Pebble.
I would like to point out that using this method if you use the stock browser it will talk to you and to the best of my knowledge there is no way to stop it.
Also last I knew if you were on a note 2 it will also talk when opening and closing folders and when switching home screens

Crazy! I use Chrome so didn't notice but you are right. More research shows its a bug with Samsung. I'll switch over to the 4.3 method using the security setting in the next few days. Until then I suggest using Chrome.

Line for Gear

Has anyone been successful using this app? It is the messaging app I use the most, but in its current state it appears quite useless. It claims it can be used for making calls and sending stickers, but the only option available is to turn the alarm off and on.
If you have figured out how to get this app working, please let me know.

It used to work! I love Line and you could reply with a sticker right from the Gear. But now it doesn´t work...
Alarm off or on refers to the alerts of the Line messages, but no...doesn´t work.
Every time theres an update for GM, I dont restore data from the last GM, this has solve my problems with line. or do a fresh install of line on your gear. you can also try to have notifications on when screen is off.

Ok. One more question. Do you have notifications turned on in gear manager for line, or do you let the line for gear app handle them?
Thanks
I finally figured it out after reading through reviews. You have to have pop up notifications turned on in the line app on your phone for the program on the gear to work properly. You can use either the "simple" or "default" setting. This pretty much just makes me not want to use the app.
Thats what I meant when I recommended to have notifications on when the screen is off. you have to play with the notifications settings on the phone. Ive also notice that sometimes notifications dont get send out to the gear when you have a screen lock. How do you like it now? its pretty cool huh, I just wish they included more stickers for the gear
The app requiring pop up notifications was a deal breaker for me. Half the reason I wanted the watch was so I didn't have to turn my screen on as often as I do. I also don't want people just seeing random pop ups. I deleted it in favor of the regular notifications until it gets better.

[Q] S-Planner Task Notifications won't show on Gear, normal?

I can say "Remind me to do a barrel roll at noon" in S-Voice on my Gear. Then comes noon and my phone is going nuts, but the Gear just sits there looking dumbfounded. No task notifications are making it to my Gear. Is this normal/intended?
I get event and calendar notifications and S-Planner is checked in the Gear Manager. All other notifications are working fine.
Running the latest NULL_23 ROM with Nova Launcher, and since I had this problem I've updated to the latest release of Gear Manager. Updating didn't fix anything.
Anyone else having this happen, or is mine borked?
Only fix I got working so far is having Tasker catch the notification and yell at the Gear via TaskGear, though it would be nice to be able to dismiss without pulling out my phone.
edit: thanks modperson! !
I have this problem, using the same solution. I think it's a universal problem - Samsung just 'forgot' to make task notifications go to the gear.

How's your TaskGear solution work, if I may ask?
Mine just summons a TaskGear notification on the watch saying "Hey, you have a task notification!"
Have you per-chance figured out anything fancier?
Side-note, is there any way to get the S-Planner tasks into ANY other app? Google Calendar, SolCalendar, anything! From there it wouldn't be difficult to notify the gear.

What I'm doing is actually only Tasker driven (I have TasGear as well, just haven't done a whole lot with it). My setting is, if a Calendar notification (from the Samsung app, b/c that's the only place the task info is stored (in answer to your other question, it's impossible to sync it anywhere)), then I run a task that does a notify with %NTITLE (title of notification) as the Title of the new notification. Because of the way the gear is setup, it 'ignores' calendar notifications because it has the special swipe function, but once your phone screen turns off, it triggers a real notification (which the gear ignores), but then the tasker process picks that up and triggers my task. It's a little annoying to receive calendar notifications a second time via tasker, but it's the best solution I've found so far.

Genius! I didn't even think about letting gear manager just send the tasker notification. TaskGear is still in the works and stops connecting occasionally, I think I may move to your solution just for reliability. I bet you could get Tasker to dismiss the original notification for you if you were so inclined...
I use "Remind me to pick up milk at 5pm" constantly. I hope Samsung starts getting their **** together with the Gear 2 and we get some backwash from that.

Sorry to resurrect this post but I am still very new to Tasker and am having trouble replicating the fix described. Can anyone help me out please?
Created the profile as S Planner, Calender info. But the task doesn't seem to like %NTitle the way i used it. Could anyone help with the correct formatting and or use?
Many thanks in advance

[Q] Latest update broke notifications?

Hi
Does anyone else have problems with notifications? For me they work for few hours and then they stop working and only rebooting the phone fixes it.
It happened to me today...
Non of notifications alerted on my gear 2....
Restarting the gear, no change, restarting the phone... the notification is back
I do have notification but I don't get any details about it, no preview of the messages at all, just that I should check details on my phone... ridiculous! they do it on purpose...
I have found that I only get notifications on the Gear when the phone screen is on. If the phone screen is off, no notifications except Gmail.

With the new gear manager update i seem to be getting my notifications more consistantly, but also, like you, have lost all detail to them. Only the fact that I got a notification and what it came from (text, email,...). It no longer gives the text or email body.
I would love to hear if someone has a fix for this.

I'm getting exactly this issue.
Hopefully we'll see a fix for this. I'm sure Samsung is right on top of it.
:/
The issue is you updated galaxy gear manager.
There is a new setting in it to control it the notification has a preview, or just to tell which app gave the notification.
Seems like this setting only works for tizen os.
I updated to tizen using these instructions and all works again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-gear/help/how-to-properly-flash-tizenmod-t2886991
(kies3 wasnt recognizing my phone) .
Good luck.
I didn't feel the need to update to tizen. I liked android and my watch styler. But preview of messages is a necessity.

Weird. That option has always been available
I dont rememeber which thread i got this File saprovider , all you have to do is Force close GearManager , then uninstall Saprovider "settings > application manager " then install the one from link.
this should fix everything , stop battery drain and make it works as it should be, notification and media control ... etc
Just incase , stop auto update from samsung app market.
Tried the saproviders.apk mod, and it still didnt bring back complete notifications.
All WhatsApp notifications show as "WhatsApp" instead of the senders name, which is kinda useless.
Cant stop Gear Manager from updating, as there is no option.
If you hit cancel, it will exit. If you hit update, it will update even without samsung Apps, as it's updating independently now.
I know this because I don't have Samsung Apps on My phone.
yeah its damn force update again and mess up everything again
I'm getting notifications, but no popup on my gear. They show in the notifications app on the gear, though. Sad days...

Chinese phone- l10, whatsapp and other apps not running in background.

Hello,
My dad bought the p9 not so long ago in China, EVA-AL10C00B386, android 7.0, EMUI 5.0, he stopped using it shortly after because if whatsapp was no open in the background, he would not receive any notifications.
My phone died yesterday so I'm trying to use his p9 now, not only whatsapp doesn't receive notifications when offline, I noticed that you can't use whatsapp on your pc either ( since it requires your phone to be connected when used), so I guess whatsapp (also telegram, but I guess it's a general problem) just doesn't run in the background when the app is not active.
I've been searching online for a fix, but I only found irrelevant solutions.
Is there any way to fix it? and if not, will installing a different rom fix the issue? if so, is there any specific rom I should get?
EDIT: I enabled developer options, and in the Running Services, whatsapp and the rest aren't running, so why is the phone blocking these services?
Thanks
try to use protected-apps to receive notification
http://android.stackexchange.com/questions/152649/what-is-protected-apps-in-huawei-phones
I can not find the protected-apps options, I looked every where, and under Battery, it doesn't exist, the closest option I found was settings -> battery -> close apps after screen lock.
And I already disabled it for everything.
For me worked to add a widget on my homescreen of the app you want to run in the background. With the widget the phone is forced to run the app in the background. With Whatsapp for example you can add the widget with all of the chats.

That's good to hear that it worked ?. You could also make Whatsapp to a system app. I don't know why but that works also but you need root for this.
