For Christ's sake YouTube... - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Why is the note 4 the only quad HD device that doesn't support max YouTube resolution. 720p is all I'm seeing even in the latest update.
Yes I have wiped data and cache, yes I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the play store and apkmirror sideload.. And no I don't want to edit my build prop.
I don't have this issue on the LG g3 or my Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5.
Is this ever going to be resolved and who the hell do you have to contact about this?
I'm not looking for 1440p.. But 1080 would be nice. There is a huge difference between 720p and 1080p imo. If you think otherwise you need an eye exam[emoji1]

You contact nobody.
There's absolutely nothing you can do unless you modify the build prop at this point.
You think we want to modify the build prop to get what should be official/stock? The answer is no, we don't.
But if you want YouTube to run 1440p, this is what you must do. No other way around it unless they update YouTube through the store for our device's support.
I've used this way here, and it worked for me.

BAD ASS NOTE 4

Why... because Note is Google Nexus' most formidable competitor... that and because they can. I would send a letter to youtube, directing your question towards them. I'd be interested to hear how they respond. In second thought, maybe we should all write them letters.

True... Limiting to 1080p kinda sucks but 720p is a slap in the face

you could always call them; I doubt they will care though.

I sent an email.. I'm sure it will be disregarded

believe it or not, they actually answer that phone number, and will respond some way...

Sent an e-mail a month ago. No response. Maybe I will call too. I wholly agree that there should not be hoop jumping for native 1440 or even 1080. Ridiculous!

I agree with you but when the Nexus went 2k, i knew that it only meant that we would get it in time. Its just googles way of saying they are in control and they say when users get that option. For what its worth, even on 1080, you tube stops 1/4 of the way and stops loading for a while. Ive always hated this about youtube and has forced me to go Vevo for music videos.

For me, bandwidth on AT&T here in Honolulu sucks so bad that streaming YouTube above 720p is impossible (in fact I frequently see buffering at 720p in some areas of town) so I really could care less BUT I do think that those of you who have better bandwidth or want to use the device to its fullest potential on WiFi should have the option. If I'm on WiFi chances are I have my Note Pro or Macbook Pro with me so I'll reach for those devices instead and watch at 1080p or higher.
Wasn't long ago that HD quality video was new to YouTube so surely in time things will continue to improve.

I don't know you guys but I fixed it for my friends' Note 4 and LG G3, also for my Galaxy Tab S and my S5 and all of them had the issue for the last month and the instructions once worked stopped working about 1 month ago.
Follow the instructions on this link and it should work.
Forget about the Root part (Steps 2 & 3), I did it skipping all the root related stuff, and it has worked on ALL the devices that I've been trying for the past month and hadn't worked. All of them now have the 1440p option except the S5 that it gets up to 1080p.
The only one so far that didn't work was a Sony Xperia Z3, but I just sold it yesterday anyway.

Really? I don't know what to tell you, like I mentioned before, it worked for all the Samsung devices I tried plus the LG G3.
Only thing I forgot to mention was that after step 4, where it tells you to go to Play Store to update, before going to the store I opened YouTube first and entered the credentials then I went to the store and followed the rest of the instructions exactly as they appear.
Try it again and see if that helps.

Just an update.
Today I read that there was a new Youtube version, the one that finally has Material Design, so I went ahead and downloaded from here , installed it and I still have the 1440p option in my Galaxy Tab S and 1080p in my Galaxy S5. I'm waiting for my Note 4 to arrive today, first think I will do after setting it up is to do this procedure, if it works I'll let you all know, but I don't doubt it will work as I did the same to my friend's T-Mobile Note 4 and it worked as the first try as I have mentioned already.

This has worked for my non rooted device:

Well, those steps worked fine on my tab s 10.5.
Rooted running cm11 latest gapps.

Awesome. Super easy fix. Did it today. Just change build prop android version to 5.0 and then Uninstalled the youtube app. Then installed youtube version 6.0 (material themed) and BAM. 1440p option is there. I'm rooted on Dynamic Cat 3.0

[Q] Google Movie App Missing?

I got the Android 3.1 update OTA this morning on my Stock Wi-Fi Xoom in the US. The update went through with no problems, but now I have just noticed that the Google "Videos" App for renting movies is no where to be found. I've looked in the Market as well and couldn't find it.
Any ideas as to why it isn't on my Xoom and how I could get it? Thanks.

I guess that is the problem. I don't see a Video/Movie app anywhere in my app list. Any idea as to why or where I can download it from?
Nvm, I checked other Xoom forums, including Motorola's forum, and have seen that the missing Videos app is a widespread problem, mostly on Wi-Fi Xooms. Hope Moto/Google fix this fast, I was hoping to rent a video for a trip I'm going on this weekend.
EDIT: Here is a quote from a forum manager over at Motorola:
"The rollout to Wifi users has started -- obviously -- but the Movies function won't be available from Google at rollout. Google is saying in the near future. My personal opinion only is that means probably two or three weeks, but again, that's just my opinion."
Well this stinks. Don't see any reason why they delayed movies for us Wi-Fi people.

Sounds like it's already there, but just with no way to access it.
i think that the video app is there bc when i go to tegra zone to watch a video on upcoming games i have to choose between Video player or another video app i have installed. im gonna try the video apk thing and see if it works.

Netflix :(

* Netflix does not appear in the Market for Droid 3.
* Attempting to play a movie on Netflix on Droid 3 via sideload will crash your phone.
I side loaded it and it runs as far as the app but video is a bunch of green crap with no sound.

I know, you'd think it'd be no problem, which is what I assumed. Perhaps support for the OMAP4 is coming via update?
That would be my guess. I think the D3 is the first with OMAP 4 in it, the Bionic is next so once a few devices have it and are selling Netflix will see a reason for it.
There is also multiple different netflix's out there, have you tried all of them?
Hi I tried netflix on cyanogenmod 7 and it worked fine, but when I try to do it in coredroid it said my phone was able. What sup with that.

I used the deviceless apk I snagged for my nook and tried it on the d3. I got the green screen bit, then it just kicked back to the netflix queue, no reboot.

They need to hurry up with this ****... Hulu too!
I don't want to pay some other company every month to use their software to watch something offered by another company I pay money to.
Well if you can't wait just use a 30 day trial from playon.tv and get netflix that way.. I would imagine they will have the app by the end of this month or early next
Same here with the green crap. Audio actually does work, by the video decoding is busted. I used 3 or 4 different version of Netflix, some crashed my phone, others had the busted decoding.
It's compatible now, or so it says. Mine isn't working. It streams but everything is all green.
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk
Yup same here. It will allow me to download and install from the market, but I get the green pixelated screen followed by a reboot.
Confirming, officially supported, and still officially broken.
The version you are downloaded is the 1.2.2 and we have to wait for the "official" 1.3 update. It seems Google is possibly being a little slow?
The 1.3 update just hit the android market and it now works for the D3... Although the colors are not as good as it looked on my old Droid Inc.
Maybe some tweaking can resolve the color issue...
Confirmed, updated version is working for D3 quite nicely.

[Q] Cannot get Youtube to install, any suggestions?

I just picked up the Nook Color and after rooting, installing Clockwork, and then Phiredroid, I have everything working the way I want it except youtube. I've tried this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925671
and many others from google searches. This is really frustrating as I love this as a tablet, but without having youtube on it makes it a lot less entertaining. I can play embedded videos, go to youtube.com and play just fine, but the app won't install. Any help is appreciated!
I dunno what the thread said, but on my nc, it was just clear market ap data, set led density to 160, (don't forget latest possible market app), reboot and yt installs fine officially for me

Perceived "Cockiness" stemmed out of fact that I suggested the solution for Nookcolor back in January. It was almost ignored here, and I was consequently ostracized because of my firm belief CM7 on Nookcolor has NO hardware acceleration of 2D/3D/video rendering. Older Flash and YouTube allow fallback to "software" rendering, newer versions deny it.
Did you try newer versions of YouTube/Flash?

No offense intended, didn't know the back story. And no, once I got it working, I was so happy my headaches were gone I didn't try any newer versions. I may later on tonight, though. Mobo Player? Rock Player? Though these might be good only for up to 480p in NC -- when there's no HW acceleration. 1350 MHz overclock may help a little.
If you really want to find something to play 720p .mkv files (and 1080p full 59.94 FPS files) you might want to try $99 HP TouchPad (and almost equally priced Jaguar 3 tablet in October) instead of NookColor. I'm done with CM7 on NookColor, you can sense it from my blog. The whole Android project is looking quite exhausted for our 4-year old chip with 8-year old SGX530 GPU.
You may want to share my find with other people who are struggling with YouTube/Flash on NC here at XDA Devs, that would be the better "Thank-You", LOL. Even if I don't get a single penny from visitors to my blog (banned at AdSense for critisizing Google).

Final Fantasy III works VERY well on DS7

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.square_enix.android_googleplay.FFIII_GP Just wanted to report in that yea, its 16$ but its worth it. Using Honeycomb Streak, plays VERY well, solid on screen touch controls, even zoom in and out support. Also the bigger perk is the "anywhere analog stick"
Hrm just checked Google Play today and now it wants to say FF3 isnt doable with the DS7? Anyone else seen that or seen issues we dont know about? Kinda odd to be supported, installed, now it claiming its not supported?
Are you still on R8 like your sig states? It seems to be installable on ICS-B4, but I dont actually own it so I cant say how well it actually works.
Yes I am on R8, which when the game 1st launched, I bought it from my DS7, installed, it, played it. So not sure why they are trying to say its not installable now. So Thought I would come here and see if anyone heard anything.

its as simple as that if you have the apk in the same dir' as adb
Oh manually. lol. I always just used push and pull back then. =) I still have it all installed anyways. I just thought Id ask in here since 1st it was up here, then it was stopped. Saw one post somewhere saying that it talks about on tablets (not just DS7) that 3 hours into it, it would crash out and not go past that point. Now not sure if thats based on stock roms, 2.3 or 3.0 based, or whatever.

netflix - systemless root - windvine made by garbage for garbage

Hello there,
Netflix refuses to play nice even on a systemless root, the only root app installed is supersu. I tried disabling supersu and that still didn't cut it. Anyone have any suggestions?
I am aware of liboemcrypto.so which if renamed/removed can break drm for other services that don't fall back on alternatives. I am aware of the CM patch for exynos 4 that works for this exynos 5 device.
I'm trying to find out if I'm missing something and if anyone would be willing to share with me how they are using netflix with the described scenario.

Thanks!! :silly:

The act of even flashing TWRP trips the netflix drm, presumably windvine. I think this goes hand and hand with the systemless root identification. This is simply unacceptable.
This kind of abuse is why people circumvent overbearing DRM because it becomes too difficult to get content through appropriate means. Cavemen banging rocks together to fight the tide and punish paying customers.
I'll be writing emails to windvine, google and netflix to explain why this is unacceptable behavior. This is MY $ 400 tablet, I will not be subjected to nanny knows best mode because some pencil pusher thinks that people will steal video content on android. I mean really, there's far better platforms to do that sort of thing on. I don't think so... homie don't play that.
I encourage everyone to also get in touch with them and let them know why truly owning the device you paid for is your right and why they are taking video on demand back into the stone ages.

As long as you have 5.1.1 >> and use supersu v2.6x then root will be system less as long as you don't make any modifications to the system partition.

I'm glad that it works rooted for you, but my thread is not necessarily to be "informative" but to ask the community if they had any alternative solutions to allowing HD netflix content to play despite windvine; barring wiping my tablet. I'm only getting 420p, it was also not okay rooted/custom recovery and was completely disabled if not for workarounds. (This is the true intention of windvine, there is not meant to be a workaround otherwise the functionality wouldn't have been disabled just reduced quality.) Granted my topic title was a manifestation from days of frustration related to trying to find a solution.

It's interesting that you condone DRM that punishes paying customers. You're entitled to your opinion although I'm not sure why you've decided to make it about your feelings rather than the facts.
Your quote is incomplete; My message is about encouraging everyone to also get in touch with them and let them know why truly owning the device you paid for is your right and why they are taking video on demand back into the stone ages. The more people who contact them the more likely that change can happen.
You should take note that even one of the largest cable operators "XFINITY" or "COMCAST" doesn't even resort to such draconian measures to protect their content and on that note they have some of the newest content, even releasing episodes before they air on TV same day via their web streaming/xfinity tv go app.

my quote was incomplete, notice the ellipse (...) before and after?
You pay ~$9 a month for a service, you paid $400 for a tablet, you root the $400 item, then get mad that the service doesn't work, even though you knew going into rooting it wouldn't work. I'm sorry but you can be mad, you can ask for help, but at the end of the day you have three real options, don't root, root and live with low res, or cancel Netflix.
I'm not trying to be mean, I am trying manage expectations.
If XFINITY doesn't do it, use them (that's how a free market works). I understand the frustration, and the desire to find a way around the restrictions, but to claim Samsung or Netflix owes you something that you knew wasn't going to happen is entitled. You do own your tablet (though if you read the agreement you agreed to when opening the tablet you would know you don't own the software) but you do not own any of the content on Netflix, and so you have no right to demand Netflix comply with your demands. A grassroots effort is cool, though likely not to amount to much since the number of people who will stop service over this is small compared to the sway the content providers have over Netflix.
None of this is my feelings, it's based on facts. You own the hardware, Samsung owns the software, Netflix owns the service (and some of the original content), the content owners own the content.

my quote was incomplete, notice the ellipse (...) before and after?
You pay ~$9 a month for a service, you paid $400 for a tablet, you root the $400 item, then get mad that the service doesn't work, even though you knew going into rooting it wouldn't work. I'm sorry but you can be mad, you can ask for help, but at the end of the day you have three real options, don't root, root and live with low res, or cancel Netflix.
I'm not trying to be mean, I am trying manage expectations.

The purpose of this thread is to ask others if they have any means of accessing HD content via Netflix on their rooted/custom recovery devices. Your replies have not been conducive or relevant to the original post. If you've got something helpful to contribute, please do. Thanks.
Just change device name to SM-T810 using buildprop, worked for me
Exactly which value did you modify? Nothing that I changed to the above suggestion would prompt Netflix to start playback for me.
Sent from my SM-T810

I'm using an SM-T710, I have no modified kernel nor am I using a custom rom. Are you saying you changed the buildprop on your SM-T810 using a custom rom etc?
I cannot get netflix to play with so much as even a custom recovery on my SM-T710 without a workaround which only provides 420p, are you stating you're getting HD content as well?
Eagerly awaiting your reply, thanks. :good:
I tried changing the device name to the model and that didn't make any difference, what did you explicitly change and what rom are you running?/firmware?
Didn't mean to revive a dead thread, but I'd really like some answers regarding this problem, too. I recently rooted my T-710, and installed the neked nook ROM on it. However, Netflix only plays at 480p. I tried several settings suggested to me:
1. modify build.prop
2. delete or rename liboemcrypto
3. modify APK to enable widevine DRM, thus allowing Netflix to stream HD content
None of these solutions have worked. Is this the case for anyone that roots their device?

Same problem, using a systemless root on my T710, with stock kernel, 5.1.1. and TWRP installed. I can get Netflix to work, but nothing seems to work to get it to HD instead of 480p. I'm wondering if the folks who get HD on rooted T710s are running 5.0.2?

I tried this on the stock 5.0.2 ROM, but to no avail. I've exhausted every resource I could find on the subject over the past couple of weeks, and I couldn't find a solution to this. Just removing root doesn't help either, as having even a custom recovery will disallow you from watching HD Netflix. I'm guessing perhaps the issue has something to do with messing around with the bootloader.
I wiped the tablet clean a couple of days ago and went back to stock. The bloatware sucks, but its the price to pay to get Netflix and Google Play videos working in HD again.

Wow. That IS a heavy price. I can't give up Xposed or GMD Gesture Control, so I guess I'm living with 480p. Sigh. Thanks for your efforts (saving me some of that process!)
Some weird stuff with this device once you flash TWRP and root. Also just found out that Microsoft Office apps, notwithstanding that they come pre-loaded on the device, won't load. Uninstall, wipe data, etc. and go to Play Store to re-install and I get the message that the app (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint) is not compatible with my device! Had to sideload apks from my phone (or you can also change your device ID).
Wonder what else I'll find out in the days ahead?

RE: Office apps, that's the other head scratching thing I happened to come upon when I first got the tablet. Although GPlay Store will say that the apps need updating, it won't actually allow you to do so - this needs to be done via Galaxy Apps. It makes no sense considering the device is listed as compatible for these apps, and the apps come pre-installed. Its definitely an issue if you have a ROM that removes all the bloatware. Its also a bit frustrating because these "Galaxy Apps" are slower to update than their GPlay counterparts.
If you don't mind me asking, what ROM are you currently using? Have you also tried GPlay videos to see if they play in HD?
Also, do bump this thread if you happen to find any fixes. It will be much appreciated.
Sheesh. I hadn't even tried GPlay movies before your post. Upon testing, I can't get them to play in ANY resolution on my rooted tab S2! Renamed liboemcrypt.so without luck. Edited my boot.prop file to identify as a Nexus 10. No go. Tried Root Cloak. Ixnay. Any other thoughts?
I'm on stock 5.11, with systemless root using Su 2.71.
Also particularly bizarre that there is no problem with Google Play Movies on my rooted Tab S 10.5 (running stock 5.0.2) or on my rooted Note 4 (running stock 5.1.1). What's with this new Tab S2?

Try deleting liboemcrypto.so, see if that works. Suggest backing a copy up first. Seems like some get GPlay videos to work by renaming the file, and some by deleting it.
I went thru the root process again, and realized these devices already come with the bootloader unlocked, so the issue isn't the bootloader. I'm stumped. Having no root is so limiting.
