Use current MotoG T-Mobile sim on new MotoX? - Moto X Q&A

Currently have an unlocked MotoG, have MotoX coming soon. On the TMobile $30 prepaid plan if it matters.
Is it simply a matter of moving the sim to the X and it will work automatically or do I have to call and go through some shenanigans with TMobile?
Curious, may want to use the G for work then the X for home life.

If by any chance you forget, the G uses Micro-SIM while the X requires Nano-SIM.

Well it will work if you cut it down. But I'd advise against it, cause I did that and now the sim is stuck since the tray won't eject.
I got mine out via two safety pins, one to put in the hole and one to pry it open.

Using Sprint Moto X on Straight Talk?

Guys,
I have a question. I am in the market for upgrading my Motorola Photon. Its right timing for Motorola to launch Moto X. I am currently with Sprint but I may switch to Straight Talk soon.
If I buy Off contract Moto X on Sprint, can I use it on Stright Talk?
Thank you.
No.

Why not? Doesn't the Moto X support LTE bands that AT&T and Straight Talk uses? It also has SIM card slot right?
Anybody here who can help?

Not LTE, just HSPA+. It will work fine, just not with LTE.

Are you sure Sprint Moto X will work? I thought sprint locks their Moto X's?

Does anyone know how the sim lock actually works? I have bought new Sprint Moto X recently from ebay. I live in Europe and the phone wasn't activated yet. I can't use any local sim, but what's strange is that I have called to Sprint support and don't have my phone's IMEI in their DB, so I suspect that the lock is just a software lock on the phone itself. Is there any chance that the lock can be bypassed by flashing a different ROM?
Any update on this? Thank you

switch to moto x by just switching my sim card?

I just ordered the de version from the sale. I've got a verizon gs3. When the moto x comes, do I just move the sim from my gs3 to the moto x and I'll be up and running, or is there more to it than that?
If it works, I would expect you'd just get 4g data (isn't the sim only for LTE?)

You will need to go into a Verizon shop and have them white-list your device on their CDMA network in order to receive SMS, MMS, or voice services. They'll probably provide you with another SIM card if the GS3 doesn't use a nano SIM too. They might charge you for it, and if they do, you can just cut yours yourself instead if you want. Google for how to do that if you're interested.

Correct. The SIM card is only for LTE on CDMA networks, such as Verizon.

I'm not sure about that - when I switched from the thunderbolt to the gs3, all I remember doing is switching the sim card from one to the other.

I believe the GS3 uses a micro sim (like the GS4, BB Z10). The X uses Nano (like the iPhone 5/5S/5C).
My VZW Dev Edition Moto X came from Moto with a new VZW nano sim included. You should be able to power both phones off and just use the "MY VERIZON" web site to switch equipment. You'll need to enter the number off the new nano SIM that comes with the X, and you might need to enter the MEID from the X too.
Since I already was using a Nano SIM, do to having an iPhone 5 active at one time, I just put my Nano SIM in my X when it arrived, and kept the one that came with the X as a spare.
If you ever want to swtich back to the GS3 later you can get an adapter to use the Nano SIM in the GS3. This is the one I use -> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009B9YWB4/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 as well as -> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009ABEA7E/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (they allow me to use my Nano sim with my X, Bionic, GS4, iPhone 5S, iPhone 5, and Lumia 928).

White list??? No need to "white list" anything if you've purchased the Verizon Developer Edition X from Moto, or even a Moto Maker device for Verizon from Moto's web site.
As long as you have two VZW branded devices that use the same size sim, you can move the SIM between them without issue. (assuming the devices aren't flagged as lost/stolen, or already associated with an account/line).
If you are switching phones and they don't use the same size sim. Verizon MIGHT charge you for a SIM, about $5, but in most cases they will not.

On Verizon, yes the SIM is for 4G, as well as GSM roaming.
However, to operate a 4G LTE device on Verizon's network, even for CDMA/EVDO services, you must have a Verizon 4GLTE SIM in it. In other words, Verizon's 4G LTE devices wont work as a "CDMA/EVDO only" device without a 4GLTE Sim inserted in them.
I am totally in the wrong here. Must have been browsing XDA too much today; I need to log off. Sorry for any confusion I caused.
The SIM does all the activation for you. It will register everything (CDMA included), when you start it up with the new phone. However, as the other user mentioned, the Moto X uses a nano SIM, so you'd either need to cut your current SIM down, or get the SIM that comes with the device activated. The later will likely be easier/safer. You don't have to give VZW anything but the number of the new SIM card AFAIK and you could swap it around as you feel like to other devices as well, though you may need an adapter.
And this is pretty much all incorrect:
Johmama said:
You misunderstand. When I say "white-list" I mean, tell Verizon the exact device you are using at that time, or CDMA will not work. That's how CDMA works. It required the specific device to be current. So while it might be as easy as going online and typing in your device's MEID, it is still "clearing" it with Verizon to use their CDMA network.
This is opposed to a GSM's black-list operation. The network doesn't care. As long as your device has the proper radios and isn't black-listed (reported as stolen or something), it can use the network. No need to verify the device against a database containing the only possible devices that can use the network. You literally just swap the SIM, reboot phone, and you're done.
So I guess what I'm trying to say is, while easy, there is technically more to it than just moving the SIM card over. You'll also need to report to Verizon (somehow, either in person or online) to take advantage of their CDMA network.

[Q] For using Straight Talk, better to get ATT or Tmo Moto X?

Essentially the title. I'm looking at potentially doing Straight Talk with the Moto X, and I'm wondering if it would be better to go with the ATT version, or with an unlocked edition such as TMo or the GSM Dev edition. My understanding is that the ATT one would need to be unlocked first, but are there any other differences I should be aware of?
Also, can someone outline the process of setting up the phone for Straight Talk?

Using AT&T MotoX currently with Straight Talk AT&T. I would have preferred T-Mo's version so I could unlock the bootloader. But they both work in AT&T Straight talk (friend has the unlocked T-Mo version and it works on his). I can't say for sure if AT&T MotoX works with Straight Talk T-Mo LTE, but it should at least get their HSPA signals.

That's good to know.
Is there any extra steps involved in using the ATT phone vs the T-Mo phone with (ATT) Straight Talk? I've heard it has to be unlocked first which either requires $30 or rooting the phone.

If you get the ATT Moto X, you have to use the ATT straight talk unless you unlock the phone to use Tmobiles towers. That's how I understand it.
I just activated my Moto X on ATT straight talk 2 weeks ago. No issues so far and I get 4g LTE service in my city.

Do OTA updates come normally on Straight Talk? As in, through ATT's network (if you're on ATT ST)

They do. I have the tmo X running off of straight talks att Sim card. It picked up the 4.4 ota within 5 minutes of being on the network.
For op. I'd recommend the T-Mobile version just for the fact that it's factory unlocked. You don't have to worry whose towers you're using on straight talk since you're able to pick up LTE on with one as long as there's signal.
Second reason, you don't have all the carrier bloat and crap. I personally think it looks cleaner without the at&t apps.

Straight Talk says they don't supply the nano sim needed for the Moto X. What do you guys recommend doing if I want to go with Straight talk. I have the TM version of the X.

I bought a cutter from amazon. It was $13, but it made a perfect cut. If you're going to use scissors, I'd recommend downloading a template and that you have steady hands.

[Q] Anyone using unlocked T-Mobile GSM Moto X with Straight Talk?

My Moto X should be here tomorrow. I ordered the unlocked T-Mobile GSM one. I want to use it with Straight Talk. After doing some online research, I've found that in order to do this, I need to:
-buy a ST T-Mobile sim
-cut it down to a nano sim
-activate it
-insert it into my Moto X
-change the APN settings
and I should be good to go. Is there anything that is incorrect here or anything that I'm missing?? I can't seem to find a clear cut, step by step guide on setting up a T-Mobile Moto X with Straight Talk. Any help is greatly appreciated.
You set up Straight Talk like anything else that involves switching around APN values. The only thing thing I would watch out for is the actual cutting-down of your SIM card. You have to make sure that all the pads are lined up properly even more with Micro-SIM: otherwise you'll just get a Red-Triangle warning. Personal experience.

I actually bought an sim cutter from amazon because I didn't trust my hands enough to do it myself so I'm hoping that won't be an issue!
Been using T-Mobile moto x on straight talk using at&t style sim card for two months now with zero issues. Loving the LTE speeds.
I too used a cutter for my sim card as I didn't trust my shaky hands.

You can use either since it's an unlocked phone. It just happens that T-Mobile doesn't exist where I live, so I'm forced to use at&t or one of their mvno's

Tmobile Moto X = Pure Edition?

Just want to make sure I am correct in my thinking here. I am on ATT. Can I go buy a Tmobile Moto X and pop an ATT micro sim in and have a pure edition phone? Is it that easy? Trying to avoid the shipping delays by picking one up in town.
There is no MotoX for sale in a Tmobile store. You have to order from motomaker to get one.
I'm not a 100%, but I think you can except for the SIM card. The Moto X requires a "nano" SIM (it's even smaller than the micro sim). You'll need to get a new nano sim from ATT. Additionally, the PURE edition doesn't seem to have all the LTE radio bands that the ATT version has. I'm not sure if that's going to cause any problems, although the PURE edition is eventually supposed to get an OTA update that will add additional LTE radio bands.

Correct, TMO does not sell the device in store and there is a planned OTA to enable all radio bands that the AT&T version has. Sorry, no way to avoid motomaker shipping times if you want a sim unlocked, non-carrier molested version
Which means no subsidized price either?

That's correct.
Yes, but it appears ATT are having troubles. If you already have ATT and a 4g LTE phone, then you just need to get a nano-sim with your old apportioning. The problem appears to be that ATT hasn't put the pure version in their database as recognized 4G phones. They work fine, but you can't set up a new account on one without tricking the system. The boards over at Motorola are talking about this.
