[Q] Playstore links in Chrome open in Chrome - not Playstore - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I realize this sounds like a generic Android issue versus being specific to the Nexus 6, but I don't see this issue on my other devices (N5, N7, HTC EVO LTE etc), and am wondering if there is something specific to the N6.
Anyway, here's the issue. I opened up the Chrome browser to Androidpolice yesterday, and found playstore links to some apps that I wanted to look at. I clicked on it, and it launched a chrome window for the play store, and let me view everything as expected. I actually didn't even realize that it was a chrome window (looked very similar to Play store app).
The problem is that when I clicked on "Buy" for a paid app, it went ahead without asking me for the password (I've set up Play store app to prompt me for a password for any purchase). That's when I realized that it was a chrome window - not the play store app.
Fine. Should be a simple enough fix - went to settings/app, and looked for Google Play store and looked for the "Clear Defaults" button - but that is grayed out! (I checked Chrome too, and that also had the button grayed out). I cleared cache and data for the Play store app, and tried it again, and it again launched the play store link in Chrome.
TL;DR So, how do I get play store links in chrome window to open up the Play store app instead of another Chrome window? Clear Defaults button is grayed out
Edit: This is the link I was browsing - clicking on any of the apps listed here brings up the play store in a Chrome window - not the play store app
Edit 2: Video highlighting the issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17Hqd2k0SMo

Just tried your link. Links go directly to play store for me. Do you have any other apps or mods that may be affecting this? I can clear defaults on both chrome and play store as well.

That's what's so weird - those links works just fine on my N5 and N7 too. I'm stock, rooted (no custom recovery yet). Rooted only to install adaway. Other than that, no changes to the system partition.
Here, you can see the issue that I'm talking about - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17Hqd2k0SMo
The defaults button is grayed out for Chrome and for Play store, likely because I never set those as default apps for anything. The G+ app has the defaults button enabled because I have it set to open for G+ links.
Short of a full factory reset, any other suggestions?

I have the same issue, but for everything. If I click on a Mega.co.nz link it opens to the browser page asking me to install the app (app is already installed and set up), same for YouTube videos, Play Store links, etc. I tried disabling Google Chrome and installing Chrome Beta, same issue... I'm going to try Firefox and see if it will let me move to other apps from there. VERY FRUSTRATING!

Did I mess up my Google Play Store?

I tried the DPI tweak, using the ROM Toolbox Lite. It was nice, but I decided to go back to 213 DPI. After going back I noticed that Books and Movies were missing. So I cleared the Play Store cache and the Services Framework data and rebooted. Books and Movies are back.
However something still seems to be wrong with Google Play Store. I don't seem to have the option to buy most movies. Sometimes I see a "buy" button, but a second later it is replaced with "rent". And some movies say "this item is unavailable in your country", I'm in the USA.
I have a Galaxy Nexus too, and if I look at the Movies on Google Play Store, I do have the "buy" button available, and the same movies that say unavailable in my country are available on my Galaxy Nexus.
Seems like my Play Store isn't working right, maybe it doesn't know my location or something. But I have made sure that location services are enabled in my Settings. Can this be fixed without doing a Factory Reset?
Update: Fixed it. I had to resync my Google account, now everything is working normal again.
Clear the data for your PLAY store, also uninstall the Updates for it, then re-install them (if any).. Factory reset might not be a bad idea either.
Personally, my new habit is to do 2-3 factory resets on ALL new devices, and BEFORE I go loading a bunch of stuff onto it.
FWIW, I've had a ton of issues with my Galaxy S III, and both of my older devices are flaky when trying to load the new Play store, but it has the Market app still, it's all goofy and stuck like that. Really not well done Google..

Looking for downloads

Hi,
I'm trying to find a list off everything I've downloaded from google play but I'm not sure where to start or even look. I didn't purchase them, they were free.
have you looked on web google play? Under My Apps & Games theres a marker showing all apps on the app and installed apps. Maybe the list can be downloaded online?

New Tablet - No App Updates in the Play Store (only for manually installed apps)

Hello!
I have a new Galaxy Tab S2.
I have trouble updating the preinstalled apps with Play Store.
In brief:
With my old smartphone (HTC One M8), after I reset the phone, I can go to the Play Store (My Apps) and it shows more than 30 updates. With the new Galaxy Tab: No Updates.
Only after I install 1 app, it shows if this one app is up to date. If I open a preinstalled app it may be that the software redirects me to the Play Store and that I can install an update for this single app.
What's with that?
In detail:
Usually (on my Nexus and HTC smartphones) I go to "My Apps" in the Play Store and I can see all the installed apps that can be updated, or not. Like for example: Google Drive, Chrome, Google+, Hangouts, ...
But with my Galaxy Tab I see no apps. Only if i manually install an app (like for example VLC for Android, then I see this single app in the list of "My Apps". If I install another app, then I see VLC and the other app. But not the preinstalled ones.
What's going on? I don't understand it.
Maybe the preinatalled apps are tied to the Galaxy Store
Thanks for the answer. I went into the Play Store again today, and now it worked. I don't know what the issue was yesterday.

Google Play Synchronization

So I have one of the $49 Kindle Fires and I have successfully installed Google Play, Play Services, Account Managements, and Services Framework and gotten everything to work. One of the games my kids enjoy playing is Disney Crossy Road. I know this is in the Amazon App Store, but one of the issues with it being in Amazon is they don't save progress, plus I use my account across my kids devices. If I make each kid a Google account, they have their own cloud save for the game. I got this all working on my daughter's Fire and it syncs with her Google Play account.
We just recently purchased my son one of the $49 Kindle Fires and I tried to do the same thing for him. I used Method #2 found here: lifehacker[dot]com/how-to-get-google-play-on-a-kindle-fire-and-install-any-1790706649 to install Google Play on his Kindle. I have installed 4 games from Google Play on his Kindle including Tiny Tower, Township, and Disney Crossy Road. I have the settings to allow non-Amazon apps to run. Tiny Tower and Township sync up with his Google Play account with no problem. But his Disney Crossy Road does not sync with Google Play. Google Play says it is installed and I can click the Play button from it and it will open the app, but none of the achievements pop, and when I open it on my daughter's Kindle, in the settings, there is a button with the gamepad icon to show it's synced. I cannot get this icon to show on my son's Fire. I have reinstalled the app 4-5 times and rebooted the tablet. I even tried downloading the app from apkmirror.com to see if that would help, but I cannot get it to work.
Are there any suggestions on how I can get Disney Crossy Road to sync with Google Play? Thanks for your help!
"Google Play" is a whole suite of different apps, not all of which are installed by default when you sideload the "Google Play Store".
Open up the Google Play Store, and search for "Google Play Games". Install that, and see if your games start syncing then?
EDIT: This is what I'm talking about:

If you can't install Google Play Games from the Play Store (-505 error) grab a copy from APKMirror and sideload.

Wow, I swore I responded yesterday but I also have Google Play Games installed. I am able to see his achievements for other games through this, that is how I know his other games are syncing properly. Any other ideas?

Not at the individual app level - sorry.
So I was playing around with this a little more and went into the Google Settings app. Inside here, there is a link for the Connected Apps section and I noticed Disney Crossy Road is not here. Any ideas if there is a way through here that I can try to enable the connection?
Thanks again!

The app must request access (typically on initial launch)...and you must grant it. There is no mechanism for auto-authorization or forcing a manual request (obvious acuity implications).
So I got it to work last night! I don't know which of the two things did it, but I reinstalled the app again but this time in game, I set his age to 18. Then from Google Play, I said I wanted to record in game footage. After playing the intro level, it synced with Google Play. For my daughter's Fire,I put her actual age and it worked. That's why I'm not sure which change fixed it, but now it works! Thanks for your help and suggestions!

Youtube Kids Error Help Please: "YouTube Kids won't run without Google Play services, which are missing from your device"

Hi
I have successfully added Google Play Store to my Fire HD 8 (2022) and downloaded Youtube Kids. Of course part of this included installing Google Account Manager, Google Services Framework and Google Play Services. However when I attempt to launch Youtube Kids I get the following error:
"YouTube Kids won't run without Google Play services, which are missing from your device"
It goes without saying Google Play services is installed on my device. I tried clearing the data and cache and also updating it still no joy. Normal Youtube app works fine and so does Google Chrome, its just Youtube Kids that is not working.
It's worth noting this Fire HD 8 (2022) is running Fire OS 8.3.1.3. I have another Fire HD 8 (2020) which is running Fire OS 7 and Youtube Kids works fine. Could it be that the new OS is not compatible?
Please Help my kids are driving me mad!
Much appreciated!
Try steps from https://www.howtogeek.com/232726/how-to-install-the-google-play-store-on-your-amazon-fire-tablet/
Better do fa factory reset first.

Thanks for your reply but I have done this already in that I have successfully installed google play store and even downloaded Youtube Kids, its just that when I try to launch Youtube Kids it doesn't work. Instead I get the error "YouTube Kids won't run without Google Play services, which are missing from your device" although I have installed google play services as can be seen in the screenshot which shows my installed apps.

Those downloads no longer exist. New links?
Same problem, all other apps work, except for Youtube and Youtube kids.
When I go to install the Youtube kids apk, it says "Not available in your region".
Fixed, worked when I sideloaded the APK.. was downloading directly on Fire Tablet.
While the APK does indeed work every morning I get the same error again so i have to uninstall it and re install the apk every morning, so another fix would be amazing too while this one kinda works
I just spent 3 hours trying to get Youtube Kids working.
I really didn't want to install a dodgy modified APK, which could essentially have anything included.
Here's the solution:
- Uninstall any existing version of Youtube Kids
- Download and install YT Kids 6.37.5 from apkmirror (trusted source for original APK files)
- Open Play Store, search for YT Kids, disable automatic updates for this app, by clicking the 3 dots at the top right
This is the latest version I could find, which works on the HD 8, 12th Gen, without giving a play services error.
Because this is the legit original APK from Google, it will actually log you in, giving you access to history and other features.
Don't forget the final step, otherwise it will automatically update to a newer version which doesn't work!
(Testing as working - versions 6.16 and 6.24.3 and 6.37.5)

This still didn't work for me. Also, I didn't have a disable updates button. Instead, mine showed a check box for enable auto updates which was already unchecked by default. Any chance you could link each APK you downloaded for all of the Google stuff? I'm wondering if I clicked a wrong version somewhere.

I used the links provided above by engage4
Because I was also worried that maybe the Google files I used from another tutorial wouldn't be compatible.
The only other thing I did is to install regular YouTube from the play store, open that and select my Google account.
I did that before opening YouTube Kids.
I don't know if it makes a difference.

Thank you very much. Had the same problem and with this method it is working.
Hopefully it will work in the future also with the newer versions.
Thread cleaned of links and quotes to an APK from a shady site and in Violation of Rule 9 - Don't get us in Trouble.

I just want to confirm that this method works on the HD 8 12th Gen.
I used disabled wifi, Fire Toolbox to debloat, add custom launcher, install google services. I made sure that google play auto-updates was OFF. I then SIDELOADED via Toolbox the 6.37.5 version. I then enabled wifi, opened Google play and pressed three dots to disable auto updates. Signed in. Searched YT kids, again made sure it wouldn't auto-update by pressing 3 dots top right (DO NOT PRESS UPDATE). I then installed regular youtube, loaded it up and signed in. From within regular Youtube I clicked on my profile icon top right, scrolled down and pressed YouTube Kids (I don't think this is necessary, but since that's what I did and it worked I'll note it here).
Finally it works! Basically you can't have 'child profiles' and all that jazz, but you can declutter and restrict a fair amount and hide the browsers etc.
