Calibrate accelerometer and/or gyroscope - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I am facing problems with the orientation sensors (accelerometer and/or gyroscope), because installing several applications to test them (or use games), it is clearly observable, that they are a bit off (with enough to be disturbing when required). For example, games or tests that simulate a ball, and my phone is laying on a horizontal table, the ball rolls quickly to the edge of screen. This happens as well with the built-in tests in the "service menu" of the phone, for accelerometer and gyroscope also.
Do you have any suggestions how could I calibrate these sensors globally (for every app)?
Thanks.

factory Reset ur phone and then use PC companion app to Repair Firmware...
this can wipe current data and install fresh firmware on ur device
:good:

Hi,
I have the same problem. Only the x axis of the accelerometer seems to be affected : it show a value around 1 instead of 0 while the phone is sitting flat. Y and Z display normal values.
All the software solutions I have tried have had no effect at all... It seems the built-in test reads raw data from the accelerometer. It is hard to imagine how this can be a hardware problem though...
Anyway, in my case I believe a software fix (x=x-1) would do the trick but I have no idea how to do such a thing ! Any help ?
@vekto : Have you solved the issue by any chance ?

Would anyone care to try the accelerometer tests and post their results ?
Typing *#*#7378423#*#* will get you on the service menu. The two significant tests are "accelerometer" and "gyroscope".
I'd post some screenshots myself but I'm not allowed yet...

I'm having the same problem now. It seems one axis is affected. Haven't found a way around so far. This is sad because it affects the images taken with Google Camera Sphere mode. The images are badly aligned together with glitches in between. My phone wasn't like this before.

Either a SW fault - might be able to calibrate with GPS Status & Toolbox app, for example - or a FW fault - and reflashing ROM might help (highly unlikely) - or HW fault - the sensor has moved on the board (which is a bad sign anyway, might be on the way to disconnecting itself).

I sent mine to Xperia Care and got it back with the accelerator fixed. Still unclear if it's a HW problem...
It came back with a white spot on the screen (near the power button) though... so I sent it back again

I'm also having issues with the gyroscope. Installed Bubble app to calibrate the gyro. It showed the gyro was of a couple of degrees. Unfortunately the bubble app calibration doesn't work in a game like Need for Speed. It's very difiicult to achieve good times in the game right now since I have to hold it tilted to the left to go straight ahead.
So if anyone has a fix or workaround... Please do post.

Same problem, Seems after factory reset whith wipe dalvik cache.

any solution?

02nd March 2017, my autorotate has completely stopped working, restart, safe-deposit and reset do not fix. Diagnostics show Gyroscope Light Sensor and accelerometer failed testing, 3 years of same issue, surely there must be a fix that works by now?? ( please note, " turning it off and on again " does not fix it )
Helps Please

I have the same issue. Since last week, gyro, accelerometer, light and proximity sensors stop working. I've tried reflashing stock ROM without success. I have not warranty (almost 3 years old), so I even try to disassemble , disconnect an reconnect every flex (I don't know exactly were the sensors are located on the board). After that I get almost 8 hours of fully functionally sensors and then, they stop working again, so I'm almost sure it's a hardware issue.

Same problem for 3 years
I'm just now getting around to doing something about this. As my power button stopped working I can't post requested screenshot without going to the pc. I have been shopping new (fall 2018) phones after having the Z3+ since release. In my research I'm finding the phone still is better than Samsung, LG, and the pixel3 for me because the 3.5mm phone jack is mandatory for me using my device with an i-rig midi requiring both that port and the USB at the same time. I'm going to do everything I can to keep using this phone till it falls to dust. It's one of 4 Sony I've bought since the day Z1 came out of t-mo. I look forward to testing solutions. :good:

Some time after my post, I bought a new jack/proximity sensor flex and replace it. This solved the issue, but weeks later, the bottom portion of the touch screen becomes unresponsive. May be I have done something wrong... may be programmed obsolescence...

Hi I'm facing a problem of my gyroscope I don't know which one is not working a gyroscope or accelerometer. My gyroscope is so delay when I play pubg mobile and I can't also calibrate my Gsensor it always says FAIL but I put in a perfect flat surface please please please help me with this problems

accelerometer calibration?

Posted a few other places with no answer...
Is there a way to calibrate the accelerometer? Mine is WAY off.
My friend has the HTC Incredible and he can do a quick accelerometer calibration by placing his phone on a flat level surface and hitting a calibrate button.
there's a game called "papijump". it let's you calibrate your accelerometer. works great.
cheers
Great app for calibration is Advanced Bubble Level. You can calibrate the accelerometer on all sides. You just need level surface.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
The problem about Advanced Bubble Level or any bubble app, it only calibrates the app your using, and doesnt calibrate the system accelerometer, therefore when using another app that doesnt give the option for calibration such as the game ASPHALT 5, you'll end up being stuck again, with no way of calibrating the accelerometer.
I've contacted Samsung regarding this and they told me to go to the service centre as this is a hardware issue. If it is possible to correct it on site (which they told me is very unlikely) they will do so, if not, they will send the phone back to Samsung so it can repaired/exanched.
there is a script you run to calibrate search on this forum
Also, in JP3 firmware, there's calibration in the Settings, so it's obviously coming with Froyo.
My Galaxy S acts like its accelerometer is not calibrated. However, I checked with the internal hardware test. Dialed *#0*# then entered Sensors dialog, and my readings on x y z axis' went to 0 when put on a level surface. In spite of that, Layar and Asphalt5 still thinks my phone rolls to the left when on a level surface. Pretty strange.
It is very frustrating, that Samsung lacks the calibration feature. I think I will return my phone, not because the hardware is broken, but the soft(firm?)ware surely is.

My Layar rolls slightly as well but that must be a software problem. I'm sure there will be a fix with FroYo or something. My Asphalt5 plays fine though.
This has been discussed extensively before... it is fixable only through root. You just need to run the sensorcalibutil_yamaha tool, which is in /system/bin .
Here is the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=712439
Layar and everything else is completely "cured" doing this. As it was said, there is a problem with factory calibration.
Correction: hardware test has so low resolution, that it displays zero in a wide angle.

Or in 2.2..
Menu -> Settings -> Screen -> Horizontal calibration. Hey presto, it's calibrated!
(I've translated the labels here, so it might be a bit off )
Does the menu->settings->display->horizontal calibration appear in all 2.2+ phones, or is it SGS-specific?
If I'm writing an app that measures the phone's pitch, should I include my own calibration option?
PS: Hi! First post.

i had a problem with the accelerometer for two days, i tried everything to fix it but i couldn't, until i read your post, so i placed the phone on a flat level surface and hit the calibrate button and it worked like a charm!!!!
thanks a lot man
Guy's,
The accelerometer on my rooted 2.2 suddenly stopped working. It was working fine one moment then the next it just stopped. I've tried it in several applications including the Bubble app and everything just displays in portrait. If I try to play a game which uses the accelerometer it either fails to launch at all (Asphalt5 tries to launch, vibrates a few times then shuts down) or it just doesn't play e.g. in Labyrinth Lite the ball just stays put regardless of how I move the phone.
I've been into settings -> Display -> Auto-rotate screen to make sure that's ticked and it is and I've also performed a Horizontal Calibration in the same menu with confirmation that the phone has been "Calibrated". I also did several battery pulls without success.
Seriously confused.com here.
Any ideas?

[Q] Xperia V gyroscope problem.

Few day ago noticed that that on gps navigation - phone sometimes randomly restarts. At first i tought that its software issue - so i relocked bootloader made repair/install using PC Companion - no result.
In forum found servie menu code *#*#7378423#*#* and if i try run Compass or Gyroscope under Service test - instant restart follows.
Accelerometer shows 0,0000 on X, Y and Z.
So i understand it is hardware related problem - but my question is where are those sensors located - or they are located on main pcb?
There are some stuff attached to middle frame with numbers
1264-3598.1
1264-3593.1
1264-3621
1364-3592.1
What those things might be?
Bump. I know it`s against forum rules. Sorry.
Same problem with my Xperia, guess water got in and damaged it :? does anyone know where accelerometer/gyroscope is placed on the phone?

I have exactly the same problem after changing my LCD screen several weeks ago.
Not only these test failed, but mine also randomly reboots itself when I'm browsing using Wifi/3G. LTE was disabled.
Passed Antutu Benchmark with decent score (~19000) and passed Antutu Stress test. I tested it till the processor got really hot (around 75c)
Already tried cleaning battery contact. didn't help the random restarts.

I have a HQ photo from my DSLR for the Gyro/Accel/Compass sensor. It's Invensense MPU Sensor. Will post the picture later after i got home.

Yeah, I had those random reboots when browsing and/or taking pictures, I believe its because the phone tries to read Gyroscope Hardware and can't so it reboots. Can you please post it?
Guys,
I'm so sorry, I forgot uploading the photos.
I'm also already tried changing my battery, but still didnt fix this problem
Now,
Here (see my attachment)
Invensense MPU3050 is the culprit, as that chip provides the gyroscope and accelerometer [dunno whether it provides the compass or not]
http://www.invensense.com/products/motion-tracking/3-axis/mpu-3050/
The chip is "glued" in the right side of the phone, facing to the screen (notice the USB connector and the front camera
WTR1605L is 3G/LTE baseband
that samsung chip, is DDR2 ram, and there's the Qualcomm processor beneath that RAM (it's stacked)
PM8921 is the power management IC

[Q] Htc one m7 screen problem

Part of my m7 touch screen isnt working .. its kinda crazy cuz the phone never got dropped .. i saw that many people had that problem its between this two parts of screen that doesnt work theres a line that working..sometimes the touch isnt working at all !!
(when people call me sometimes).
its really disappointing cuz i like htc very much !
another problem that im having and saw that many people has it too : screen brightness always go maximum ! auto off for sure but still the brightness making problem tryed to reset the phone didnt help( not hard reset) it sucks to have a bunch of problems in a new phone ..
please please help me !

delete the dot in postimage ! sorry but this photo will help you understand and i have to share it !
Areas of the screen not registering touch input in most cases is a hardware issue with the digitizer. Loose digitizer connector may cause similar issues, but the only way to check is to open the phone. Opening is not easy and there is a high risk to damage the body. If you decide to go this way, my suggestion is to get new front and back panels + screen kit and to transplant the rest into the new housing. It's also a good time to replace a worn battery or a faulty camera module.

some times the screen back to full funcanlity
and please help about the other problem with the brightness .. its look like one of the sensors is broken in the phone .. maybe its the problem ?
When Auto Brightness is set to Off, the phone is not using the light sensor.
You'll have better chance to get help if you provide some basic information about your phone:
- What OS version? (KK, LP, stock, custom)
- Was the phone factory reset after the last OS update? (highly recommended)
- Do you use any applications that control screen brightness? (like some picture viewers, barcode display apps, etc.)
You may fix the brightness issue (most likely software related), but non working digitizer on parts of the screen is hardware related and no app will fix this.

lollipop not root and other .. i deleted everything , did a soft reset not the hard type . no but i download lux to see if its help and it doesnt help either
The only thing left to try on a software side is factory reset the device. Many users report it clears various OTA Lollipop update bugs. The process takes about 10-15min, the OS will go through Android system update process again and the device will be reset to factory default state (don't forget to backup all your data). During the initial setup process don't restore your online account backup, make clean setup. Test the screen and digitizer before installing any 3rd party apps. Make sure your screen protector (if you have one) is not bugging the digitizer. If you have the same issues, then it's definitely hardware related (screen/digitizer assembly or connecting ribbon cables).

Note8 Sensors error - Any of you faced with?

I have Note8. It has a very strange sensors error, as below:
- All sensors, from proximity sensor, light sensor, to GPS, iris scanner, and all the other sensors do not work at all.
- In the app like Phone INFO Samsung, CPU-Z or AIDA64, in the Sensors section, all sensors do not work.
- The Auto Brightness function does not work (due to the light sensor), the brightness of the AOD screen is also not adjustable.
- When making a phone call and move the phone close to the ear, the screen does not turn off due to proximity sensor.
- Auto Rotation function is not working (due to rotation sensor).
- Google Maps shows inaccurate location. Other apps that rely on GPS (such as the speedometer app) are completely not working.
- The iris scanner function does not work either.
It was about two weeks ago. I've Wiped the cache, restart the phone but does not make sense.
Yesterday it suddenly returned to normal, I don't know why.
But today - while I'm typing this post - all sensors suddenly do not work again.
Any idea about the error and how to fix it?
Thank you guys
Best advice I can think of is to factory reset and see if that alleviates the problem.
If you did not do anything firmware-related, or you did not drop or submeged your device, the best you can do is to make a warranty claim, pure and simple, if you have no way to make such claim, well, next time you should consider getting a device from an official source
I've read other users have had same problem. Ones I read said it was motherboard issue had to have sammy replace it.
Thank you guys
There is also built-in sensor test. Open dialer and dial *#0*#
I noticed a problem when I was playing Asphalt (racing game on me Note 8). I am unable to use the Tilt controls to move the scar.
Testing out the Sensors using *#0*# at the dialer revealed that all the SENSORS was faulty.
I reset the whole phone just now. The issue is still there with the sensor. As expected Auto rotation doesn't work.
Running the latest version 8.0.
I recently changed my motherboard (under warranty) 3 months back cos something was faulty. Seems it may be another motherboard issue.
Anyone else in this thread solved the issue?
Hey everyone I'm facing the same problem. All sensors stoped working but they were working before on 7.1.1 and i updated my device to oreo and realized all sensors stoped
Then i got another updated for about 900mb i thought maybe this update will fix them and also that update said tha after updating the user cannot downgrade to nougat but after updating the problem still exsist. Please if anyone can help i also try to flash same oreo firmware with odin but doesn't fixed the sensors

All (almost) sensors stop working

Hi everyone,
Almost all sensors stoped working after few days on my brand new Pixel 5 :
Failing sensors :
- Proximity sensor
- Accelerometer
- Gyroscope
- Compas
And maybe others I don't know of...
Fingerprint & cameras are still working.
I've contacted Google support, and they advise me to clean my screen :-/
I'll try a factory reset today before asking for a replacement unit, but my hope is low...
Anyone facing the same issue ?
Any advise ?
Edit :
After a factory reset : same situation
Same here. Had phone for about ten days. All seemed to work. Then thinks went weird over several days. First thing I noticed when going to hang up a call I was no longer presented with phone dialler screen. During calls phone was also spontaneously switching to handsfree. I suspect this was wall tilt related. Then camera images were in incorrect orientation. Google photos not longer rotating images and so on. Installed a sensor app and it reported gyroscope as missing. Clean booted - no change. Factory Reset and still no change. Arranged for an exchange with Google. While waiting for that to pan out, after about a day the gyroscope has come back to life. Although presently reporting no compass. Doe the P5 have a compass?
Anyhow given it working again now I am wondering if some power saving activity is killing the Gyroscope? Waht was the out come with your sensor failure. Did they recover or did you need to exchange?

I tried a random app from the store : Sensor Test with my bad unit and it reported 0 sensor !
I've exchanged my P5 and now the same app reports 30 sensors.
While waiting for the exchange , mine never came back to life : can't rotate, screen stayed on during calls (and auto brightness not working), compass was not working in Maps...
Also on the faulty unit I noticed that the OTA update tooks ages (30 minutes or so, for a ~30MB update). On the new unit, the same uptate took just a normal reboot time.
Thankyou for the update.
While mine has a working gyroscope (at the moment) the proximity sensor is still borked and the screen stays on during calls. I just installed the Sensor Test app and it says I have 16 sensors!
30 for me
Sent from my Pixel 5 using Tapatalk
30 sensors also for me.
Oh my god yes exactly this happened to my phone since yesterday. No auto rotation, no auto brightness, no tap2wake.
I have to send mine back, I hate it. Sensor app does not recognize a single sensor. Factory reset didn't help either
When rebooting like 10 times it changes between 0, 1 and 16 sensors.
I factory reset my phone again and that made it worse. Has gone from 16 to 0 on Sensors Test!
Has lost screen rotation again.

Like my old one, I doubt this is a software issue...
I hope my new one does not have this flaw.... but this definitely hurt my confidence in P5 devices....
Sounds like issue with corrupt persist partition caused by update gone wrong.

Indeed ! I didn't know about this.
But it seems that the solution is to root the device, and this void the warranty (Google asked me if it was rooted before the exchange).
Weird. It did not happen to mine right after an update, more like 20 days later. Btw Google did not ask me if I rooted the device, which I haven't, but I did unlock the Bootloader for a short period of time to use the android flash tool from Google.
I'm not very familiar with partitions on android but all I can say is that a newly flashed stock firmware from Google itself did not help me
All my sensors work according to that app - it shows 30 sensors every time I launch it - except the proximity sensor sometimes does not actually work right. I was noticing an issue because KinScreen would think my proximity sensor was covered and would turn the screen off because the proximity sensor looked to be covered when it was not, even though the app should have kept the screen on. I downloaded multiple sensor testing apps and the proximity sensor works most of the time but sometimes it does not. Weird. Not sure if I should exchange the phone, I got this with AT&T.

Took a couple of weeks, but I now have a replacement unit. 30 sensors showing and all working properly now. I took it for granted how reliant these devices are on having sensors working for basic things like the phone to work properly. Glad I found this thread and was able to get it sorted out. thanks for the help.
I had to get a replacement PIxel 5 through AT&T for the broken proximity sensor. This one works fine.
Couple of weeks?
I got a new device within 4 days where 3 days were for shipping
Just out of curiosity, am I the only one Google asked if I have rooted my device before sending it back ?
They asked me 5 questions for the warranty (I live in France/EU btw):
- Has the device been impacted, or is the screen damaged?
- Has the device come into contact with liquid?
- Has the device been in contact with a heat source?
- Has the device been rooted?
- Has the device been repaired by unauthorized personnel?

I started an RMA process on their website and no I'm not 100% sure about the other stuff but I'm sure they didn't ask if I was rooted.

I see where Google announced that a fix in the December update could possibly fix the sensor issue for some. I'm guessing you guys got the update and it didn't work huh.
idk I got a new device in december
