Gear VR blurry? - Samsung Gear VR

Hey everyone,
I just got my Gear VR and I just finished setup. I have tried to adjust the focus on the headset but it seems no matter what I do it always has a bit of blur to it? Is this normal or should it be able to focus into a perfectly clear image? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Someone else had the same problem on reddit, maybe it was you? It seems that when you put the Gear VR a bit higher by adjustung the headstraps, it will come into focus, atleast that was the case with the other guy.

No.. it wasn't me lol. I will try that as soon as I get off work. Thank you!

So playing around with it, I found that certain experiences like in tutorial just aren't very sharp.. The quality looks much better in other VR apps like Oculus Cinema.. Its still a little blurry but nothing terrible..

Do you have a screen protector on the Note?

I have a screen protector and noticed the same thing . . . guess that is the culprit?

by screenprotector.. You mean plastic or tempered glass ?

I would say both. We might be introducing the blur because we are placing a additional layer of glass or plastic on top of the primary glass. Under normal conditions we do not see pixels right. But with Oculus Rift the ideal resolution is 16k! That's because we have the screens so close to our eyes and you're using lenses. I'm not sure if the lenses are used for magnification or if they allow us to refocus on the top layer of the screen. You might be seeing the bad quality of the protector first, then a possible inner layer of dirt or moisture followed by the actual screen. I always use the shower method to apply my protectors. Maybe there is still a layer of moisture trapped that the naked eye cannot see.
Please don't remove your expensive screen protectors and blame me if you still have a blurry effect. I do plan on removing mine because I have this nasty halo effect. That too can't be good for this application. Also make sure that all the plastic film protectors are removed. Seen this one unboxing and it appears that both sides of the lenses have those protectos applied.

Yes I have a spigen screen protector. It's extremely clear with no halo effect. Most people can't even tell it's on however as Chrisonxda said it's possible the additional layer is causing the blur as the image passes through.

Please let us know the results if you remove the screen protector. Before I remove mine I'm going to test it on a friend's note 4 as he doesn't use a screen protector on his..

Don’t have good news regarding screen protectors. Per the Gear VR operator’s manual page 6 of 61:
“Remove the mobile device screen protector to get clear visibility. “
Sadly I won’t be able to confirm with my own glass protector because when I went to order this morning Samsung was out of stock again. I should have ordered earlier but I was concerned with Verizon compatibility and I wanted to see more feedback from people.

I ripped my screen protector off. Didn't make a difference. Some of the content is just more blurry than others. But wow is the over all experience amazing. I brought mine into work. It is a pretty cynical crowd since I work for a video game company. Everyone who has tried has been floored.

I actually see this blur people are talking about and has nothing to do with the video. It's just a dirty lens. Whenever I get that smudge due to eye lashes etc, I just wipe it with the glass cloth and it's back to clear. I thought I had an issue with my eye or something lol.

ditto. i ran the Gear VR with two different Note 4s: one with and one without a screen protector (film type). they both looked the same in terms of clarity...besides the scratches on the unprotected one. lols. Samsung is probably thinking about those who have damaged screen protectors or those crazy rubber ones that have that orange peel effect. and maybe those tempered glass ones as well since they just add onto the phone which might cause difficulty in docking the phone to the headset.

I think I figured out the blur and why it's there somtime when I swear I didn't touch the lens. Fog. (I think the weather also affects this) It's defintely fogging up. When I take the headset off, I see the fog vaporize off the lens. So maybe I should apply some anti fog.. hmm

Mine fogs up too. I wonder if the anti-fog spray for glasses will work?

well technically the gear vr is mostly the same as the oculus dk2.
i have the dk2 at home so i can confirm that its allways somehow blur and not perfectly crisp. you have a "sweet spot" at the middle and the more you look at the sides the more blurry it gets...
this is how the optical lenses work now and will only get better with better hardware.
nethertheless dont get too much distracted by it...
for best results:
- adjust the right ipd and also try to find the optimal vertical alignment
- keep the screen and the lenses clean (hopefully the lenses are not as fragile as the dk2 lenses are)
gl and have fun! :highfive:

I put some anti fog spray I use on my hockey visor worked perfectly.

Is there an ipd adjustment on the gear vr?

In preperation before my Gear VR arrives, i already ordered anti fog spray and a rocket blaster for blowing away dust particles.
http://www.amazon.com/Giottos-AA190...&qid=1418732129&sr=8-1&keywords=rocket+blower

I have the same issue
I can get each eye clear, but it has to be so precise, it's on the verge of annoying. Maybe my head/eyes are shaped weird.

Spigen Flex HD - Application

Hi all,
Fitted my Flex HD protector (front and rear, pics below)... Rear fits great height-wise, but a bit short width-wise, not bad in general though... Quite good at applying these protectors and I got it without a single bubble
Front one though was a different story... It was my first ever wet-protector install and I'm not entirely sure about it. The fit is GREAT! Just not sure how well my actual application has gone...
Anyone installed this specific protector on this phone and able to offer any advice on whether the bubbles shown will work themselves out over a few days as it says they should? Doesn't seem to be any dust below, just bubbles
Thanks!
They'll go away. It took mine two days to disappear. the first day I saw a few and tried to move them out and by the second night I couldn't see any bubbles.
you can always take it off and re-install. The pray that comes with it does not work as well as a small bowl of water with a drop of dischwashing soap. Make sure your fingers are good and wet and they with some practice you should be able to get much less bubbles right away. I am a perfectionist and it took me 4 applications to get it perfect. I had zero bubbles as soon as I was done and it took about 1 day for the excess moisture to dry for a perfect application. No hair, dust or bubbles. Surpirsingingly, I really like how this SP feels on the phone, and I always have used tempered glass.
The good thing about a wet application is that you get second chances, unlike glass (at least i my experience)
good luck
Mine looked the same as your's OP, by the end of the night most of the small bubbles were gone. Really hoping the rest of them work themselves out over the next few days. Most comments I've read say they do, so I'm optimistic as I am a perfectionist as well. Can't stand the sight of bubbles or blemishes in my screen protector.

I see the orange peel effect and i have ordered this screen protector does the effect go away over time? is it a matter of stretching as much as possible during application with the card?
Thanks all
It seems that after about 12 hours it is looking a lot better, not quite perfect yet though
I also see now there are a couple of bits of dust (I made the mistake of putting it back down on the sheet after taking it off initially to clean the screen again)... Surprisingly though the bits with the dust aren't the worst bubbles, in fact they're not very visible at all
Will give it a few more days then maybe post some more pics for people to see what it is like
It took mine about a week for all the bubbles to work themselves out, but now that the did I can't even tell I have a screen protector on my phone. Really happy with the front protector!
I'm gonna have to redo it as it has dust from when I put it down
But yes the bubbles in general surprisingly are sorting themselves out
Anyone think their screen looks slightly yellowish hue after installing this? I don't recall how mine looked before so I'm really hoping this is so and it's not my actual screen. If it's my screen then I will be exchanging if because it's quite irritating. And it's perfectly white when I hold the screen at an angle instead of dead on.

I would simply take mine off and determine that way but then I would have no protection afterwords. So any help would be greatly appreciated.

After 2 days, all blemishes and bubbles are gone. I've had several people say they had no idea there was even a screen protector on until I told them. It feels like glass and doesn't have that rubbery feel to it like how some other "wet" application screen protectors feel. I also don't have any discoloration due to the screen protector either. I can honestly say I love how it looks.
I was very skeptical at first since this was my first "wet" application screen protector. I've always used the one and done "dry" application ones. The application process was very nerve racking with all that "solution" on my phone, and trust me I was with everyone else with how my phone looked initially. But after letting it settle for a few days, I can say I'm glad I went with this screen protector that wraps from edge to edge versus going with one that only covered the top of the screen. I highly recommend it to anyone on the fence :good:

YMMV, some people here claim it goes away but I frankly don't believe them. The orange peel effect is there and in full force even after a week. There's even a bubble that will not go away even though there is no dust underneath. I'm returning this one ASAP and I recommend against anyone buying it.

I don't think this is brilliant. Those "bubbles" don't look like they'll disappear. Looks like a defective screen protector. Did these ever go away? Wonder if others had the same problem and it is a result of a faulty batch

Here's my phone with the FlexHD on after 3 days
And I thought I did a good job. You sir are a master at installing liquid install protectors. If I were to place my phone next to yours it would look like ****, although I did install mine in the car, outside of best buy, on my lap, on a rainy day with no light, because I didn't dare put the phone in my phone or any where else for the drive home.
Oh well, good thing it came with 2 protectors. Can always try again.

Anti-Glare for 8" VW Flush Panel

Bench testing is nearly coming to a close, so today I decided to tackle the horrible glare issue on theses units. The silver bezel pops off fairly easily. This will allow you to apply a tablet screen protector, with no worries of proper alignment. The excess overhang and access holes are then trimmed with a sharp blade. Took less than an hour in all to do.

I've been thinking about doing this. How well did it work out on the glare side? Did it really help at all?

Yet to see how much it helps with direct sun glare, still on the bench. I'm sure it will be useful in diffusing some of it. My main concern was with distracting reflections. The angle of the radio, in a MK6 Jetta, reflects the drivers vision directly to the passenger. I really didn't want to make eye contact, with my passenger, every time I glance at the dash.
I used an iCarez HD Anti-glare screen protector. Very good results for the money, 2-pact on Amazon for under $10
Comparison photo.

Did you scratch the face of the unit up at all? I really can't see trimming those small holes without doing some damage but maybe I just don't have the right blade.
Looks good!
Thanks. Only one minor scratch, can't really notice. An exacto blades helps for the small holes.

Hello, I just saw this. I've posted this in one of the other posts. This is my take on the Atomic 2.0::
Just received the Ghostek Atomic 2.0 Case. Even though Screen is not glass does not feel that back. No stickiness like plastic films. But for now just had it on for some hours so can't really say for long run yet.
It is a bit wider like a little over 1/4" more than the UAG case. Which adds to black borders on the front as seen on the pictures. So if you already had trouble using it with one hand, this would cause a bit more trouble.
The thickness is about the same as the UAG case when both are facing screen down.
This case advertises Waterproof but has 2 openings for the speaker grill on top and the home button on bottom. I would expect water could get in through those openings. Screen is dot matrix.
The look of the case for me is nice and does not make it look ugly in my perspective. As because the screen guard as they call it make it look like the screen is showing more than some cases that adds front black plastic borders on top and bottom.
The one thing is you might want to use wireless charging more due to having to open up ports more often if using a usb charger.
Here are some pictures I took. Sorry about quality. The best Camera I have is the GS7 edge. lol.
http://imgur.com/a/osNxm
Right now I'm using it with the TANAAB Screen protector.
I'll post more about it. But first reactions seems to be a good case but would depend on how you would see it and if the 1/4" width bigger than a UAG case would be a drawback or not.
It Seems that Ghostek send several out to Mobilefun or Uviyo in batches but haven't shipped through their main site.
Update:
Update about the openings mentioned above. The waterproof works and does not get inside case if there's nothing that raises the area where the openings are. I had the TANAAB TGSP that doesn't go full length of the phone let water in but when removed and tested no water went in. So waiting to test it with a similar TGSP like GPEL2 that fully extends the the phone and see how that works.
When With TANAAB. Sensitivity didn't change and could provide good protection if needed as the outside screen is just a thin plastic film.
Just wanted to point this out.

Update:
As mentioned sensitivity wasn't a big problem or no problem I've seen.
But because its' a plastic screen I and because of my old TGSP didn't full extend to the end of the phone. I decided to get the Tzunami ProGlass from walmart. Installed it and put the case back on. Which should add extra protection on screen.
Even though responsiveness was good this seem to bump it up a bit more as it sticks more to the plastic and doesn't leave much. Plus you should not have a problem with it breaking as it just sits inside case.
Likely going to put the GPEL2 When I receive it but likely this might be my set up for my phone. The case looks nice and hope this is an improvement from their other cases.
UPDATE: Sensitivity issues as well from others with the ProGlass. So waiting on GPEL2.
2nd update of the case
I forgot to mention, this could be a pro or con depending if you use speaker a lot or not. I do listen at times but most of the times I use bluetooth headphones or speakers so no problem plus sound seems to be extended a bit more.
But the sound from the speaker is somewhat transferred and the back is used to transfer the sound out which would be why they use the type of material for the back. As if you see pictures of it the bottom you won't see a speaker cut out instead it's for the cord. So if you really depend on the sound from the speaker, the sound would be coming from the back of the phone instead of the side. You won't have to worry about covering it with your finger.
It does help when talking to someone on speaker phone, which is an advantage if you sometimes use the speaker phone when on calls at times. Seems to amplify it a bit more but comes from back for music. But haven't seen but haven't tested much on what music could get muffled out due to the way it is done.
Hope this answers or helps some that might wonder about it.
Uodate #2
Seems I forgot I still had the AT TGSP and for now no sensitivity issues at all and not like the Proglass has occurred. Will update if it does but for now this would be my combination of screen protector and case.

No it is not really necessary but as others mentioned this is plastic. But I feel that phone is safer if screen is protected by Tempered glass than films or plastic films. As there's no big lip on front and only thing protecting front the the plastic film I just rather be protected than not be.

Hello, Want to update on the case as you read my other post mentioning some openings on the home and earpiece, seems that was a faulty case as was missing films for the waterproofing that it supposed to protect.
Seems my first one was missing the films that go in the earpiece and home button so wasn't fully waterproof but had no sensitivity issues, the next one had high sensitivity issues on the top area where the first one didn't. Ghostek has been nice and quick in sending replacements and honoring their warranties. Right now I have the first one installed until I received the third case. As there is no sensitivity issues.
I did drop the phone from about 4.2 ft high with no damage. The phone fell front side. I do have a tempered Glass installed and no difference with or without on sensitivity. There does not seem to be any damage on the phone or case. The drop was accidental and kind of scary as well when it fell face front. Even though it was on a case. But glad I had the setup I had.
The only drawback I see is that with fingerprints I don't have a problem with the one with no films(1st case) but with the films on(2nd Case) the best way for it to read is putting your finger side ways. Which works all the time when you put your finger sideways but when upwards is a small chance that it would detect or not.
Just received mine today. Spotty fingerprint scanner, the screen has the little dots all over when you shine lights on it or are out in the sun, definitely a loss in touch sensitivity due to the front film not touching the screen unless you press down on it.
Hello friends, my question is, is that possible to call someone while using this case?

I've had no problems when I have good reception. The only times I have problems is when I have 1x when outside in small areas plus work truck kind of blocks signals.
But regular use with not problems on signal, I haven't had any complaints.

The OP5 screen compared to the OP3

Now then, I've had my OP5 since Monday, and have read all the things about jelly scrolling, inverted display panels and so on. This is something different and the reason I am likely to return this phone within the 15 day period.
It's been a bit wet and dark here all week in Hull, but I wear polarised sunglasses in the sunshine and am amazed at the OP5 screen while wearing them. Have a look at the photos of the OP5 and OP3 taken on my 6P, then look at the other photo of them taken on my 6P through the lens of my sunglasses. The whites are all split on the OP5 through polarised glasses but remain perfect on the OP3 (apologies for the photo orientation).
I have serious doubts of the OP5 panel quality.
Wow... Is that related to the new gorilla glass? Or maybe a change in the panel? AMOLED effect maybe? Seems that OP is hiding many things from us.... Faulty bootloader, dirty things under the OOS hood, display issues, ...

Thats caused by the screenprotector for sure
Original screen protector on both. This also doesn't happen on my 6P with or without screen protector. Perhaps they've done something different with this one?

I don't know, but I've never had this with an amoled screen before (HTC desire, N1, NS, Moto X (13 & 14), N6P, OP3 etc). You always get some phasing, which I expect: e.g. the Pixel C appears blank in portrait mode. Crappy TN panel PCs go very dark unless directly ahead. (All with polarised sunglasses on)
This is an issue I've never seen on an amoled display.
Wow that's strange. What kind.of crappy panel are OP using?!

Nah, that's not the screen protector. There's a very strong rainbow effect which is especially visible when displaying white. That's really annoying (and adds up to the jelly effect...)
Damn people like cry about small things... Screens look weird when you look them via polarized glass. Example mine dont look that bad than yours. Also, you really cant compare them if both phones arent at EXACTLY SAME PLACE. Now other one is on center and other one on the left side. Sunglasses are usually littlebit curved also which can show other screem differently than other.
You should take pictures with one phone at the time and then combine pictures with photo editor. Make sure that either glasses, camera or phone are all at exact same spot.
Ps. Oneplus 3/3T has Gorilla Glass 4 and Oneplus 5 has Gorilla Glass 5 so you really cant compare them and say "OP5 panel is crap" when both phones has different glass but same panel. I'm almost sure that "issue" you found is caused by different front glass. Also you said that both has original screen protectors installed. Well that dont mean they would be same screen protectors. So to test this right you should test it without screen protectors and also with same glass, which is really hard to do

Also to me look a small thing. Maybe for our friend is super important.. it is subjective.
I also use polarized sunglasses, and my Motorola Nexus6 has a strange fluorescent effect, but not "rainbow" effect on white.
I ll let you know in 2 weeks when I will have in my hand OP5
polarized maybe

The difference in angle is so slight that it wouldn't make a difference. I take the point about the difference in gorilla glass and the screen protectors, but as I said I have never seen anything like this level of white splitting, on any level of gorilla glass or any other screen protectors. I can only make this comparison with the phones as they are, not in an impossible lab situation. I said serious doubts about the panel quality.
Please keep this discussion reasonable and not start with the flaming.

I can confirm this. With the filter of my Nikon I have same effects on OP3 and OP5 screens related by the angle of viewing. It must be screen protector related. On both devices are the original protectors from OP. No worries about that. :good:
It is just because the display is build in upside down.
Try looking at ANY Computer Screen with the Polarized Sunglasses, turn the Sunglasses and you will see the same effects or even stranger, you cant see anything on the screen because it is LCD and not AMOLED.

Bare-cases pane - Full Adhesive Tempered Glass

saw these guys on facebook (sponsored post) - looks interesting but i cant find any reviews of their products on youtube etc - no influences or anything!

https://www.bare-cases.com/pages/pane-samsung
https://www.bare-cases.com/collections/screen-protectors/products/bare-pane-for-galaxy-note-8
they say its compatible with most cases as long as the lip isnt too high
anyone have any experience with them or any tempered glass they'd recommend (especially one thats compatible with the ringke fusion)
Well, looks promissing!
Looks exactly like this one.

I'm convinced there is only 2 or 3 manufacturers and they just put the glass in different packaging.

Zaggs tempered glass revision 2 has been on the money. I've placed this thing on twice. Once when I got it and, the second time, I removed it from my old unit after a screen burn-in replacement, and place it onto my new unit. No air bubbles and the glass feels high quality, comparable to Whitestone sans the complex installation. It sits on the screen only slightly curving to the edge, and it does sit flush without interfering with the edge tab if I choose to use it. It is quite expensive ($50) but imho, it's quite worth it after successful installation. Highly recommend it!

While I agree with you that it goes on nicely you didn't mention that since it doesn't cover as much screen as other protectors and also has black side bars you get a weird effect where there's screen, black bar, rest of the screen which is quite annoying.

yes there are black borders around SP which the top and bottom part aligns with the phone borders, so no issues there. Depending on an individual's taste, the side borders may be of concern. However, I made no mention of any weird effects as a result from the blk borders and / or the edges not being fully covered because I haven't experienced any negative effects thru general use of the phone. I must also mention, that in some apps, i.e. flipboard the first letters of words that display close to the edge of the screen may be partially blocked by the SP borders. But for me that's not a problem, as i don't experience this issue with most of the apps I use on a daily basis.

No I agree with you, I just thought people should know in case they're looking to purchase it. Like you said, 50 dollars is a lot for a SP especially if you didn't know the bars did that and it bothered you. I'll be keeping mine on until something better comes along, if ever.

Agreed!
They at least have an all clear one here with no black bars if you go to the select page, still doesn't look like it goes all the way to the sides https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32852...00_0109&spm=a2g0n.search-amp.list.32852741886

i have tried these, good product in terms of clarity and touch sensitivity. the issue i had was that the vertical edges would easily crack with a bit of pressure as they dont seat on the screen as well as they should.
my current solution for using these is to remove the adhesive backing and reapply with loca adhesiveand cure with uv light.

Tested these a month ago. Cracked two working out bubbles. Glass quality is very bad. One cracked on the right side. The other on the bottom using a fingernail to work out a bubble. No chance that this is good 9h tempered glass. Opened a dispute and got both refunded. My opinion, not recommended.
Not recommended too, to narrow, covering edges with black bars completely.

Not recommended too, same bad glass like the one posted and cutting display on the bottom

ok so i purchased one and it arrived yesterday
while applying it i got some dust stuck under the protector, tried to take it out but it wouldnt move
applied it anyway and its pretty good except for the air bubbles near the curved sides of the screen (and the dust particles)
the protector is really fragile too, it chipped and cracked a corner while working out the bubbles - others have complained that theirs cracked for no reason
other than that it actually feels amazing and is compatible with the ringke fusion
ive contacted support, hopefully theyll send me out a new one
I wonder why they disabled comments in their video?
What's the best between this one and Dome Glas ?
I don't like the cut around speaker - face camera ...
A real full cover for front face is the most beautiful but may be not very good for quality of face camera ???
