[Q] Gear VR with Samsung Qi wireless charging cover? - Samsung Gear VR

I have Samsung's official Qi wireless charging cover (http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EP-CN910IBUSTA). This increases the thickness of the phone (even without any cover).
Will the Gear VR work with this cover ? Or, will I need to replace the back cover every time I want to use Note 4 in Gear VR?
Thanks,
Osho

has anyone had any luck finding a case that can stay on the note 4 while it's docked in the gear vr? Even the smart cover I was using couldn't work due to the raised edge.

Nice question... Plus 1...
NOPE
nope. i have one of the thinnest cases possible (Ringke Slim) and it don't play well with the headset. if i force it, it might break the hinge on the USB.

Tylt Vu Wireless Charging Stand

I wanted to share an interesting observation I made this evening. I have the S6 Edge with the Tylt Vu stand, and it works a heck of a lot better if I put the phone down into it in landscape.
Portrait has a REAL hard time getting a connection. Of course, if I take the case off, it doesn't matter. For now, I don't mind because I can see the night clock better.
UPDATE: Portrait will not work regardless of case vs none. If you are able to get it to get a connection, it cannot maintain it. As stated in post #7, I believe there is an alignment issue with the coils and the phone. I will be emailing Tylt to see what they have to say.
No pics = fail
I was gonna buy a Tylt, but the price was ridiculous, so I ordered one of these, shold be here tomorrow...less than 1/2 the price!

Maybe less than half in price, but less than half the charging voltage 5v versus 12v of the Tylt

they both put out 1 amp while charging, so there wont be much, if any difference in how long it takes them to charge a phone, especially if they are sitting on the charging stand for awhile, But hey, if it makes you feel better about overpaying by more than double, that's ok..

I'm not sure why pics are needed? To update, I realized that case, or no case, it's not going to work in portrait orientation. It does get a connection but cannot maintain it. I've updated my OP to reflect that.
Also, there is now at least one review of similar products on Amazon having the same issue. Some of the vendors are even updating their item descriptions saying not to use with the S6/Edge

While that is true, if you're just using it as a charger overnight then it shouldn't be much of an issue. The 3 coil could benefit there as well, as my suspicion is an alignment issue with the S6 and the Tylt, and other products based on its design.

Let me know how well it works, with and without a case if possible.
I have 2 tylt Vu wireless chargers and my 6 edge works fine in portrait with both. Maybe it's just your unit ??? Btw i also have the neo hybrid case on while wireless charging .
I can definitely agree with OP. I have two tylt vu chargers, tried it with both case and no case on the edge, and the chargers both exhibit weird behaviors when the phone is in portrait. The behaviors include:
Charger showing green light but phone does not show charging
S6 edge continuously disconnect and reconnects back to the wireless charging
No light and not charging on the S6 edge
I think the position of the wireless charging receiver on the edge must be in between the top and middle coils and is not getting a solid connection. It would also explain why having it landscape will give you a proper connection if it is able to solidly make a connection with bottom coil.
UPDATE: I did some testing with the charger I have at home and it seems that the case might be the real culprit. I cannot seem to replicate the weird behaviors when there is no case on the phone; it chargers just fine. I did take a video that shows the odd behavior when the S6 edge has a neo-hybrid case on, this one. youtube link
I have two Tylt chargers and my S6 Edge works great in portrait. I was lucky and got two Tylt chargers on clearance $30 each from T-Mobile a year ago. Have no issues charging with my clear plastic T-Mobile case. It's very thin though.
My Note 4 had issues wireless charging at times I would have to take it off then set it back down. I had the Samsung Qi back cover.

I have this case http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00SV63WVE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Probably not the absolute thinnest case but it can't be too far off. If the charger cannot work properly even with a case as thin as this, then that, to me, is an issue. The fact that the "knockoff" versions of this product are starting to see reviews with similar issues should be considered. What I don't know is if the reviewer tested like you did...
Review: http://www.amazon.com/review/R30U94...etail-glance&nodeID=2335752011&store=wireless
Another vote for having two Tylt Vu's (apparently I'm not the only one who can't have just one!), and they both work fine without a case.... that being said, I ordered the Spigen Neo Hybrid CC in gunmetal as my first case I've ever had on any Galaxy device, EVER - this phone is just too damn expensive and thin not to have one this time - and I'll let you know in two days if it still works with that case on it!
S6e + Tylt + Spigen Neo Hybrid = No Bueno
I concur with OP. 5 tylt chargers around the house and my S6e with Spigen Neo Hybrid exhibits inconsistent wireless charging on portrait but no problem in landscape mode. Naked S6e charges with no problems in portrait.
This is my case that I have no issues wirless charging on my Tylt in portrait. The case is made by Samsung and I bought it at T-Mobile at cost $20 instead of $35. Limited protection but does cover the corners. S6 Edge is to damn sexy to hide in a case. I know it's better safe then sorry. Also if you register your phone at Samaung you can get 30% off and buy it from them.

That pretty unfortunate.
I happened to order this wireless charger/stand http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S7IBDGW/ref=cm_sw_r_tw_dp_y-5jvb18R9X7M and charging in Portrait with a case/without a case works perfectly.

That's interesting because that's the same unit that the one review I saw they had problems. Also, I don't know how new this is or when you bought it, but it says in the item description that this is not for the S6 or S6 Edge, and that there will be a new version that is compatible.
The reviewer doesn't say whether it's the S6 or S6 Edge, however I am seeing on other branded products, the item descriptions are being updated with a warning not to buy for the S6.
I can't make heads or tails of it. I have other receivers that work just fine. Those include a Choetech Stadium, MobilePal battery pack with Qi charging, a Koolpad, and iOttie EasyFlex Wireless Charging Car Dock...
As an update to my comment about my S6E working just fine in the Tylt Vu, it still does, but damn that thing took over 6 hours to charge last night and when I picked it up this morning, it was MUCH hotter than my S5 ever was on the Tylt Vu with wireless charging cover..... I'll have to look how long it took my S5 to charge over night, I got my S6E down to around 15% and charged it from there - and then this morning when I was waking up, it made a charging connection sound, so I went to look at it to see if it had the same issues a few of you had, expecting to get up and see it half-dead, and it was at 100%.... so it was charging all night, no disconnections, just took a loooooooong time and made a looooooot of heat, which can't be good for it!

Interesting I didn't even see that in the description before i bought it. But i can confirm this version works just fine with my Edge . And for the time being I am using the Spigen Air Cushion hybrid case and it still charges. It is a Qi enabled charger, I don't see why it would not be for a Qi device such as S6/Edge.

The issue is alignment between the coil(s) and the receiver. Are you carefully about how you put your phone onto it.or do you just kind.of drop it in there without giving it any thought?

Note 4 and the new Gear VR SM-R323

I was not seeing my questions answered in detail about the new Gear VR, so I decided to just buy the item myself and give it a test run with my Note 4.
Yes, it works and fits just fine without modding.
No, the charge port still does not work even with the provided adapter.
Yes, you can enjoy cardboard apps with it.
No, your D-pad will not work with Cardboard apps.
They say the field of view is greater. It is obviously less for me, at least for the Note 4.
It is definitely a midnight blue color with black accents. Looks black in a lot of photos.
No you may not mod the cover with a cooling fan because the cover does not fit while the phone is mounted.
In conclusion, I will be returning the product because while the Gear VR experience is super cool, the last model (SM-R322), once modded, is better on all fronts minus working charge port.
Edit: I got the D-pad to work with Google Cardboard by restarting the phone
Didn't snap a few pictures with the Note 4 in it by any chance? I assume that the headphone jack is blocked off as well?

I'm pretty sure it is, but let me see if I can open the pkg back up and get a few pics
My bad, getting pics now. No, headphone jack is NOT blocked off. Ok, here is the mask that lessens the field of view from the old one. There is the cover that doesn't fit while the phone is mounted, and there is the headphones jack clearance that can now be used.
I wonder if the cover doesn't fit because you have a Note 4. If it's the same for all phones I guess it's just to protect the lens.

Could be but I'm sure I read the same complaint for a different model elsewhere. Perhaps someone else can confirm or deny.
The fit is also quite different. This cover latches into the clips in place of the phone while the older one wraps around the bulk of the front enclosing the headset. This cover does not enclose, it just kinda sits in there.

I have the 2015 version and I only use the cover to protect the lens when I'm not using it. I don't see the purpose of using the cover when your phone is in the Gear VR. Besides it may hold in heat. I don't think many people with the older gear use the cover with the phone in. That's probably why they redesigned it as a protective cover when not in use.

Yeah, I gotcha. Those of us with really awful overheating issues have come to depend on that old cover for our cooling mods. The info about the cover is applicable to those owners. Appreciate the feedback everyone!
When you first install the Note 4 (without the Oculus software installed) into the new GearVR do you still get prompted to download the Oculus software?

In that case it should also work with a N910C running stock firmware. I will post a update to say if it does once I get a Gear VR.
My verizon note4 works perfectly with the 2016 gear vr. It prompted me to install oculus apps.
Ive also streamed a few pc games from my gaming pc and it works well.
But it doesnt charge while in use through the passthrough charging port. Any workarounds for this?? I think I might need to get one of those 10000mah batteries.

Have seen zero workarounds. Good thing is this version is probably better with extended batteries and their fatter backs. Please let us know if you give it a go.
lukasz mentioned on the other Note 4 post that he had to make a headset mod. I guess that all depends on your vision and how recessed back into the headset you have to go. With my vision, I would not have to make that mod because it jutted enough forward to give me headset port clearance. Something to consider

VERY NICE and innovative, thanks for sharing!!!
Ok....I picked up a 323 this morning.....I'll do a report later.
I'm coming from the original Note 4 version which is superbly built
It will be fun to compare the 2?
I spent a good bit of time assessing the 323 with the Note 4 bearing in mind that I came from the 1st innovator edition.
I have to say that it's a big step forward
A few points
It fits in with no modding
I had to re boot the phone to get cardboard to work with the touch pad.... I use the Cardboard for Gear VR app
I think that the usb connector is a bit bit fiddly and sometimes you have to jig it a little to make contact......but I suspect that's the same for all phones on this VR....it might be the usb adapter
The headphone area doesn't need modding depending on what headphones you use.....Samsung phone ones grand....Bose QC 25 grand....Sennheiser 414's no go
The wide field of is fantastic and the lenses seem much sharper.......now this is important!..... When I first tried it there was some serious warping on the sides of the screens...movies etc. The fix is to delete every bit of Oculus and VR software (not cardboard apps) and resintall.....that seemed to improve it dramatically. I don't think I could have lived with the warping
It might be heating up the phone a bit faster but not sure about that without further testing. I find Samsung Internet a heat hog especially when streaming videos etc
The fogging is much better
Oh yes and the usb power socket doesn't work
The build quality can't compare but all in all it's a better vr experience......
I never tried the modded 322 so can't compare but I expect that the wider field of view would make it worth it
Bottom line is I'll be selling my Note 4 Innovator edition......although I think the value will drop now that this 323 has come out
Hope this helps:good:

Spare Galaxy Watch 3 charging dock

Is there 3rd party one available that doesn't overheat watch?
I am also interested in this.
Related - is there a wireless pad that could charge the GW3 as well as a phone? The included puck won't charge my S10e.
Although now that I have a metal band on my GW3, I'm pretty limited (i.e. watch has to wrap around the wireless charger because of the clasp, as opposed to the original leather strap that completely disconnects).
ever since the moto 360, all my smartwatches have had a metal clasp/band.

Galaxy Watch 3 Night Stand S352
Spigen’s Night Stand for the Galaxy Watch 3 (45mm/41mm) is made entirely of scratch-free TPU for minimal aesthetics packed with smart functionality. It features a bottom lip that cradles your watch on its side for stability that prevents your watch from swaying side to side. An exact charger...

Same thing Galaxy watch 46 mm .
Best Buy has the original Samsung Charging Pad on sale for $14.99.

You can 3d print or buy a stand for these
Here's a link to a 3d printable holder for the charging pad. It's my favorite and if you print it at 100% PLA and add some small stick on rubber feet to the bottom it's heavy and stable enough to stay where you put it.

Hi, I just found out that my old Gear S2 watch charging cradle charges my Galaxy Watch 3.
I haven't used it to fully charge the GW3 yet but hey, it actually charges, will try it next time the watch needs a full charge and see how well it goes.

If you just get a few tall stick-on feet, the watch band will go right under the charger. I've always preferred the metal bands and this was the first issue I ran into with them. This works great. Notice the one foot in the center of the fan, be careful not to block the air flow.

Help me to choose a wireless power bank with suction cup...

ATM I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Tough Armour ad I need a powerbank and I was thinking to tke a 10000 mAh wireless powerbank with suction cup.I found two online https://www.amazon.de/-/en/MOXNICE-...ite)&linkCode=gs3&qid=1631034132&sr=8-10&th=1nd this https://www.cellularline.com/en-it/...S-Wireless-Power-Bank-10000/p/PBOCTOPUS10WIRK The first link is much cheaper but I don't know the brand the second is more expensive maybe even for the most well-known brand.
Other brands maybe give me advice on amazon or does someone know the first brand and can recommend it to me?
I think taht wil be a god solution so I keep on the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra Tough Armour and I will use powerbank when I'm out frm hme just when I need to recharge

What do you exactly mean by there's no thickness?
Bear in mind that if there's a physical barrier between the wireless battery and the phone it might even not charge at all or the charging efficiency will be bad and there will be heat due to the lost energy.
I would recommend using battery cases. I have always used them. Try the zero lemon 6000 mAh
