How to watch 3D Movies on Gear VR - Samsung Gear VR

Step 1 - Create a folder called 3D under Oculus / Movies / My Videos /
[it'll look like this Oculus / Movies / My Videos / 3D]
Step 2 - Put your 3D movie in that new folder.
Step 3 - Get into Oculus Cinema and go to my videos. It'll be labled 3D on the top corner and the video will merge the two views when you watch it.
PS - I moved the whole Oculus folder from the gear vr sd card to my previous sd card. And I still don't know how to watch youtube other than downloading it from youtube and placing it in the 3D folder.
Have fun!

Is there a particular 3D format that is recommended for Note 4/Gear VR combination?
Thanks,

So basically any SBS mkv should work right? How is the movie experience? Is it worth the 200$*add-on?

The experience is out of this world. Haven't had any real VR experience before and it is crazy awesome. It's very immersive, enough to trick my mind to thinking i'm actually there in 3d space. Like that one mogolian hut scene as well as the circus were very real. I see huge potential in this thing. Oh, about watching movies, yeah, you're in a virtual cinema which is really cool cause the lighting of the movie lights up the whole interior just like in the real movies. Youre gonna love it. yes, it's worth 200.
edit: haven't tried mkvs. The two 3d movies I had were mp4 and they worked.

Is there an app that allows you to watch the movies without the virtual cinema surroundings, as in just the movie in 3D? That's basically what I'm buying it for, so it would be good to know if it works without any sort of extra fluff that isn't needed.

Yes, there are 4 options for the cinema setting. One is a blank dark screen so you don't see the seats etc.

You can do that in the Void Cinema within the Oculus Cinema and also in the VR Gallery app.

I lost the SD card that came with my gear vr. I created the folders oculus/movies/myvideos/3d in my regular SD card but they still don't show. Any ideas?

Not sure if you got this working yet, but did you create the 3d folder as "3d" or "3D" - not sure if it's case sensitive.

My only guess is that you need the other files. I copied all the files over to my larger SD and works fine.

MKV and AVI video works but NOT audio! It only works with mp4 (which are also what all the stock videos are). Anyone know how to get audio to work with other files???
Update: I can play the same 3D (SBS) MKV or AVI files with a regular app and audio is great. (also louder than VR app) If I place in front of the VR without plugging in I can watch the video in 3D fine.

Ok figured it out. If the movie is a sbs movie lets say gravity.mp4 then create a file called gravity.txt in that file put this
{
"format": "3D"
}
This works every time for me. In the oculus cinema app, under my videos you'll see the movie and it will say 3d in the top right corner

What regular app do you mean? Do you mean a video player app outside of VR?

Perry, I'm not sure if this might be the cause but like I said, your folder is not even named correctly to begin with. It's NOT myvideos folder. It's my videos folder. There is a space between my and videos. You dont need all that txt crap. Gravity works 3d, ive already watched guardians of the galaxy 3d on it.

I was just going by what oculus support wrote for the gear vr bro. The my videos thing was typo on my part, my bad. Worked for me thought I'd share. This is per their site
https://support.oculus.com/hc/en-us/articles/204372193-Watching-Your-Videos-in-Oculus-Cinema
For 3D video content, Oculus Cinema supports the side-by-side and top-to-bottom formats. To designate that a file is 3D, create a text file with the same file name as your video and place it in the same directory. For instance, for mymovie.mp4, create a text file mymovie.txt, with the following content:
{
"format": "3D"
}
Where the format can be any one of:
“3D” : 3D movie side-by-side
“3DLR” : 3D movie side-by-side (same as “3D”)
“3DLRF” : 3D movie side-by-side full screen
“3DTB” : 3D movie top-to-bottom
“3DTBF” : 3D movie top-to-bottom full screen
The next time you launch Oculus Cinema, your video should automatically appear in the “My Videos” section. If it doesn't, please check the instructions and try again.

Correct. For example MX Player will play MLK and AVI with audio fine. Oculus only plays mp4 with audio.

Has anyone watched the demo video with the fields, fish and mountains etc. Have you noticed that it appears to be 3Dish. Not cinema 3D but the effect is there. Everyone that I show sees the same effect. Some 3D movies (Avatar etc) look great.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is this a software thing or hardware?

Yes, the video looks awesome and definately "quasi" 3D, but it is not really 3D, its a trick in the video editing by slightly changing the perspective point int he video and your eye naturally follows it giving the slight impression of 3D.

Post your 360 downloadable video links here

Here's one, Just save the mp4 to your computer and drop it in the 360 folder on the SD card and it will show up and play in your headset menu under 360 videos.

i found a few on youtube actually, and just extracted them as mp4s, they played fine. also pulled a few movies as .mkv files from other places, but the audio was not supported by the oculus cinema player, so i'm converting it to an .mp4 with mp3 audio.

Sorry i misunderstood, this was stereocopic 3d not 360. Here are downloadable 360 degree videos HERE But I think we need to figure out a way to make it work with the Gear VR.
This below is for regular 3d stereoscopic.
First, here is the LINK to Youtube Downloader on XDA.
Make sure the Video is 3D Sterescopic.
I usually download the best quality, which is usually 1080p. And HERE is a super good 3D video. Its effects are amazing.
Have fun!

That's great, ill try it out. Seems like the 360 videos under Oculus / 360Videos / need 2 files to work. The mp4 video file and a .pvr file. I did download some 3d videos so I'll rename them and see if it works without the .pvr file.

How was your experience watching movies? Any headaches or feelings of disorientation afterwards? Just curious.... I can't watch 3D movies in the theater because I get headaches from the glasses. Just wondering how it would be on this type of device....
I have excellent experience with 3d and regular movies. I never had a headache using polarized glasses in movie theather. Lcd glasses sometimes makes me uncomfortable. As gear vr goes there is no glasses so there is no ghosting. Each eye receives separate picture with refresh rate around 60 hz.

Once you have your headset locked in that sweet spot it looks amazing, especially when viewed with the fake theater mode (maybe because it gives the illusion of depth?). By the way, I agree with you on the theater headaches and I do not experience it with this Gear :good:
Headaches: Nope
Disorientation: Not when I'm watching a movie or mindfully walking around, but after a session of Anshar Wars I sometimes forget which way I am facing S:

I have a 3d tv & 100" 3d projector screen used with active glasses, i don't have a problem watching 3d on ether, A couple of my friends dont like to use the glasses so we only watch 2d together,
for me, the GVR movies have less flicker than they have with active glasses so its more comfortable to watch.
they look great, no problems so far with headaches or sickness & i wil be interested to see what my friends that do have problems with my big screen 3d think about the GVR 3d movies...
I will post back once they had a go....
only thing with the GVR is the screen door effect, most noticeable on peoples faces in movies, but as screens get better so should the problem.

I think you need to add _TB to the end of the movie file!
Also said i would report back about the people i know that got sick watching 3d on my home cinema, & people with sight problems.
one of them was my mother-in-law, she needs glasses all the time but said the GVR looked great to her & she didn't feel she needed to use glasses.
my other mate has a bad eye and cant watch 3D on the TV (active),,, he also said the GVR 3D moves looked great to him & had no problems with sickness or headaches
The last mate to try uses glasses all the time also, he said the GVR was "SICK" in a good way
He did have problems with some of the small text!

haven't found anything that helped...only get side by side, not 3d video.

add .3DTB or try .3DTBF
3DTBF = full-screen 3D, i.e stretched side by side
3DTB = normal SBS i.e no stretching of the picture

If you want to watch a 3D movie in TopBottim format in the Oculus Cinema, create a text file with the same name as the movie. In the text file write:
{
"format": "3DTB"
}
or
{
"format": "3DTBF"
}
Depending on the video format if fullscreen or not. if you want to watch a 3D 360° video in TopBottom format, put the videofile in the 360video folder and rename the movie to "moviename_TB.mp4" for over-under or "moviename_LR.mp4" for side by side 3D.

So that you can watch a 3D movie in the Oculus Cinema, you have to go to Oculus -> movies -> My videos -> And then create a sub folder called 3D (not 3d). Now put your 3D movie in this newly created 3D folder and it should work when you have a side by side 3D video. If you have a Topbottom video, you have to create also a text file, as i described in my post above.

This might work; it differs from what I've been doing. Thanks, I'll try it out when I get home.

Thanks for both comments.: they are extremely helpful.
The easiest way is to put them in folder: oculus/movies/trailers/3D and your movies going to be among others in trailers section of oculus cinema. I noticed that side by side dont need any aditional letters to be added to file name. Simple "namehere.mp4" works.

Thanks for simplifying this process for me... Guess my reading comprehension leaves much to be desired... 3d movies can look spectacular in vr cinema. With one video, I even have to strain to see pixels. Now testing different settings in handrake to find best combination for optimal experience.

No problem, regarding video encoding Oculus recommends the following:
We recommend using 1280x720 HD resolution to encode your videos. Higher resolutions will not provide any better quality, meaning you'll waste space and processing power.
We also recommend using a higher bit rate than a typical web stream at that resolution, as the pixels in your video will be magnified on the phone's screen. The optimal bit rate is content dependent, and many videos can get by with less, but 5 Mb/s should give good quality.
While H.264 is the recommended video coding, H.265 videos can also be played.
3D movies should be encoded “full side-by-side” with a 1:1 pixel aspect ratio. Content mastered at 1920x1080 compressed side*-by-*side 3D should be resampled to 1920x540 resolution full side*-by*-side resolution.
Their rationale on video resolution is disturbingly flawed for their own product.
Though the resulting video output is close to 720p, this is in relation to the display that is showing both the video and the VR background.
A 720p video of same content as a result will not look as good as 1080p.
Ideally, the best image would be at the displays native resolution, but the screen door effect nulls some of this premise.
Whatever the case, 720p video should not be equal to 1080p.

3d blu-ray (frame packed) to Gear VR?

I have a few 3d blu-rays that I would love to watch in the Oculus Cinema. My understanding is that most 3d blu-rays are in the "frame packed" format but the Gear VR requires either side-by-side or top-to-bottom (top down). Is there any way to convert a frame packed blu-ray to a sbs or td MP4?
Thanks.
--Edit--
It looks like this software might do it. Anybody have any experience with DVD Fab Blu-ray ripper for 3d?

Is this related to my issue?... Cannot play 3D video with top-down format. ... despite placing in appropriate directory, creating text file and changing file name...?
Not sure if this will help you with the top down video.....

No, MKV's work perfect....unless you're talking about something else?
All my rips are ripped straight from blu-ray into an MKV container with the only exception being that the audio is converted to 5.1 AAC (neroacc) from the DTS HD core file @ VBR- Quality 1.0 for best quality and stock video player compatibility. Only the video/audio files are in the MKV container, no subtitles etc etc.
20-30 GB per movie but the bit rate is worth it since you're so close to the actual screen hence the ability to see pixels. Anything under 20mbps bit rate is simply not sufficient enough when it comes to the black levels/darker scenes due to the close proximity. Original file is best for decent quality, and personally I noticed no change in battery life nor performance.
In regards to 3D, everything is the same except I convert to Top/Bottom. DVDfab will do just fine to convert to top/bottom.
To get 3D top/bottom working on the Gear VR, took me awhile to figure this out at first....
1. Connect the Note 4 to the computer.
2. Make a copy of one of the text files from one of the pre-loaded 3D trailers in the "Trailer" 3D folder
3. Rename it to the name of the movie file you want to use
4. Inside the text file, next to "title" rename it to the title of your movie file
5. Inside the text file, next to "format" put "3DTB" instead of "3DLRF"
6. Make sure you place the text file in the same folder as your movie, either in the
3D folder under Movies or Trailers.
(Note: you may or may not have to drag the text file to your desktop to make a copy and change the info. Just drag it back into the folder once done)
Hope this helps :good:
Why do you convert to top/bottom? SBS sould be better for VR since it would be shown as is on the screen.

There are many other blu-ray ripping programs for ripping 3D Blu-ray to 3D videos which are compatible with Gear VR. I've the pleasure of using EaseFab's Blu-ray Ripper to finish my job. Have a try!

Yes I use dvdfab to rip my 3D blu-rays to full 720p SBS mkvs. Don't get why anyone would use half-sbs 1080p, as that would result in worse quality, yet higher file sizes (you can see more than 960pixel on the horizontal axis, while you will be limited to 720 on the vertical).
EDIT: The resulting MKVs usually end up having audio sync issues on the Note 4, but just remux them with MKVtoolnix afterwards to solve the problem..
play 3D Blu-ray on Gear VR
As far as we know, Gear VR supports most conventional file formats like MP4, AVI, and FLV; however, Blu-ray format is not included. To play 3D Blu-ray with Gear VR, first you need to convert Blu-ray to Gear VR supported file type. And if you stick with 3D movie on Gear VR, you can rip Blu-ray to MP4 in side-by-side or top-to-bottom 3D formats.
To rip 3D Blu-ray movies to 3D 3BS MP4 and make your 3D Blu-ray playable on Gear VR for your own., a professional Blu-ray ripping tool is needed. Here, UFUSoft Blu-ray Ripper is higly recommended. With it you can rip any 3D Blu-ray to 3D SBS MP4 video for Gear VR with fast speed and high video quality.
Watching 3d movies on my gear vr is one of my favorite things.

3D content sbs or over under?

hi guys what is the best format to view 3d movies on the gear is it over /under (ou) or side by side (sbs) format
I've read somewhere that 1920x540 is the ideal aspect so is that the over under format ? thanks
SBS. LG has some nice demos on YouTube. Personally I'd prefer a qHD video over 3D any day. Think about it. Real life is actually qHD not 3D.
ok thanks is there any good recommendations of video content to download for when mine comes ? thanks

For starter use tubemate and you can download some 3d and 360 videos from youtube straight to the phone. For more you will need computer and use some tricks to download videos from sites like airpano, 360heros, vimeo and more.
