[Q] Help with nexus 6 (several questions) (tmobile to Verizon) - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

After attempting to buy from 3 retail tmobile stores (who wouldn't sell me the phone without a plan) I ordered my nexus 6 via the phone. Several retail workers and customer support agents on the phone have told me I need to keep service on my phone for 45days to get the unlock code from them. Currently awaiting delivery (back ordered )
What happens if I don't wait for the unlock code And I just insert my Verizon sim?
The tmobile nexus 6 is suppousedly the same as the Unlocked GP nexus 6, so what exactly is unlocked?
I'm coming from a note 4 (my note 4 lags a lot more than everyone else and I can't take it anymore, couldn't figure out the cause)
will the nexus 6 have multi windows at all?
Also how do you use the notifications on this (I played with a 2013 moto x, is it the same?)
Sorry for all the question and thanks in advance for any help.

I just bought the phone from T-Mobile with their cheapest plan Wednesday and I'm canceling them today. From what I've been Reading I shouldn't have to pay anything for the plan. I haven't used it at all and just popped my Verizon Sim card right away.

nothing, except youll have a code that does absolutely nothing. i bought my n6, n5, and n4 via tmobile. they have never ever sim locked a nexus, never. its exactly the same n6 that you can buy at the play store.

Thank you, you pretty much saved me 45 days of phone bill payment.
Im assuming if i dont activate the tmobile sim, i can cancel/not have any charges.
I prev had the z1s with them for like a month and canceled due to their poor customer service , surprised they let me sign up again. (Then again theyre the ones who wanted me to sign up, i just wanted to buy the phone outright and use it on my unlimted data verizon line)

T-Mo Nexus 6 on VZW
OK, so I see that the T-Mo Nexus 6 works fine on VZW, however I see that all of you said you bought it outright, how about buying subsidized? Will it work if on VZW then, since the phone is getting activated, will it lock it to work only on T-Mo? Thanks for the help in advanced!

As stated above T-Mobile doesn't sim lock phones.... They also don't subsidize phones because they are the "uncarrier" so it will work if you pop the Verizon sim in assuming you have a bank sim ready to go.

As what others have said, T-Mobile doesn't lock the phones.
AT&T and Sprint are on a different story, AT&T I've heard locked their phones via carrier.
Sprint doesn't lock their phones but some people have reported buying them from Amazon have carrier locked so be careful on that.
T-Mobile will however make you stay with them for one month (I believe) before you can cancel. If you cancel, your EIP balance is due. If you pay outright, you'll still have to stick with them for a month. At least thats my understanding of it.
U.S. Cellular also sells the phone now but I'm not sure about their policy.

I just bought a white 64gb off swappa, anything in particular to check for? (My tmobile one is backordered).
Pretty sure i overpayed, but as long as the phone is like new i'll be happy.

Check the imei of course to see if it has been reported stolen etc or if the user has paid off the financing if it is financed.

Wow.... I would have definitely waited a bit longer than pay that much for a phone.
Theres availability, you just need to stick around for them. Have a auto refresh script that alerts you when its available. They randomly add them in stock.

Glad I caught this thread. Few questions to get clarification:
Assuming I buy the N6 from T-Mobile (subsidized or not) - what is their cancellation policy? Someone mentioned 45 day scenario where you can cancel without penalty? Is that true?
Thanks!

They dont do contracts. Just dont activate their sim and call them up saying you want to cancel.
If youre looking for a 32g id recomend buying off motorola.

What's the process to using this phone on ATT?

Hi I want to buy this phone, unlock it and use it for ATT.
I heard you cannot buy this phone off contract and that you must have a service with them. I hear people are just signing up for the service for one day and then cancel the day after.
Can someone explain how they did it?

Pay full price for phone up front and buy the smallest package. After 40 days cancel the service. Some stores will sell it out right without a plan, but you will have to do some searching and calling. I had to go to 3 different stores before I found one that would sell it out right.
I read LTE and 4G dont work so well when you take it back to ATT. I read somewhere.

There's been conflicting reports about that.
I bought the phone outright. Paid $30 or so to cellunlocker to get an unlock code. Popped in AT&T sim and off I went. Still need to cancel Tmo service.

When you purchase the phone outright you now it and can unlock it.
I bought my Note 4 outright and purchased the lowest priced package I could. I unlocked it the first day I received it, inserted my sim card from Consumer Cellular and was up and running. However, I read that T-Mobile can and have blacklisted the IMEI of phones that don't comply with their terms of service. Since I didn't read the fine print when I bought the phone and service, I decided it would be prudent to go ahead and meet the 40 service requirement to get an unlock code (although the phone is already unlocked) rather than take a chance and have some T-Mobile manager with a Napoleonic complex blacklist the phone. Then I would be out of $800.00. I asked the customer care representative about blacklisting the phone if I didn't meet the 40 day requirement and she said it was possible. I wasn't willing to take that chance. I will pony up an additional $80.00 + dollars to have peace of mind.

Right but you make it sound like every T-Mobile store or reseller will sell you a phone outright with absolutely zero commitment of any kind like you walked in to buy a pack of gum or bought a nexus from google play store. There are conflicting reports about zero commitment purchases. The safer bet seems to be walking in with the understanding that you may have to agree to a month-to-month or prepaid contract that you can cancel a day or more later.
The best way i can think to explain it is as follows:
A few people have reported that they were able to buy it outright without service. Though many have been denied that option.
Some have implied that Tmobile then unlocked it.
A moderately safe assumption is that you can buy it with service, unlock it via third party service, and cancel your tmobile service the second u get your unlock code. This comes with the gray area of region locking and having to activate it on tmobile first to remove the region lock pior to unlocking. This can be a lengthy discussion, you might not care about region locking, I'll leave it at that, but read into it. I went this route, activated on tmobile for 4 days, then unlocked and cancelled. I say assumption because people are worried about blacklisting and T.O.S.
The most cautious method would be to wait out your 40 days per Tmobile T.O.S., in addition to the time it takes for them to send your unlock code, pay applicable fees, then cancel.
Hope this clears up the options a bit.

T-Mobile has the IMEI of phone they sell you in their records. I confirmed it when I called them and they read it to me for confirmation purposes. They sold the phone to you and they know everything about it. Guaranteed. If their records show the phone being used on another carrier without it being activated with them or unlocked by them then they can blacklist the IMEI of the phone. That phone will then be an $800.00 paperweight. They have done it before and a quick Google search will prove it. I'm not saying they will since that seems to be an unknown, but they can and the owner of the phone will have no recourse. I sure don't want to wake up one day and find out that my $800.00 phone is dead. I might very well be wrong, but I am not willing to take that chance after paying $800.00 for the phone. I'll pay for the 40 days of service.
I just bought my Note 4 full price from AT&T after calling about 30 stores in my area and finding one store with one black model in stock. I ended up paying less than full price because of some computer error that rung up the phone $749.99 instead of $825.99. They charged me the difference so I only paid $825 outright, after taxes. All in all, I saved almost $50 (difference in tax from $750 to $825). I still feel like it is ridiculous though that the AT&T model is $80 more expensive than TMo. Is it worth buying a TMO Note 4 with their baseball discount ($30 off) and trying to unlock it to use it on AT&T? Sorry for my long comment/question.
Bought mine from swappa in a sealed pack. Opened the phone, went to Cellunlocker.com and within 10 min had my unlock code. Works great on ATT

[Q] Amazon purchase Sprint Nexus 6 locked. Need help.

Hi i just received my sprint nexus 6 from amazon. I have tmobile and when i placed the tmobile sim, it prompted me for an unlock code. Is there a way I can get it Unlocked since I do not have sprint. Is there a 3rd party website that unlocks sprint phones. Any help would be appreciated or I will have to send the phone back. Thanks.

I think you can follow the instructions here.

I think you can try purchasing an unlock code from http://www.swiftunlocks.com for $9.99.
It's been reported to work on AT&T sets so I think it should work on Sprint sets too if it's really sim-locked.
I tried it but they dont have Sprint as a carrier in the drop down menu. I also called amazon to try to return. Theyll charge me a restocking fee. FML.

Try contacting them to enquire about unlocking a Sprint Nexus 6? Also try other service providers that could unlock a carrier-locked phone?
Btw, which Amazon link did you buy it from?
I cant post links here since i am new member. Its from Amazon and the cost was $648 without contract. I had it shipped overnight since I got tired waiting for the GPS version. It says its temporarily out of stock at the moment.

Hmm.. reading Amazon's return policy and it says "All phone parts and accessories must be in new condition and returned in the original product packaging. We'll pay for return shipping on eligible returns authorized by Amazon Customer Service. No re-stocking fee is required on all eligible returns."

Yes since its a sprint phone. Sprint charges $35 dollars in restocking fee, If you break the seal and open it. I should have just refused delivery if I had known prior to this that this phone would be locked. Right now I am out $35 dollars +11 dollars for overnight shipping.

I cant get past the sim unlock code required screen. The "GSM" part of this sprint phone is IMEI locked. I need to find someone with a sprint account so they can request a code from Sprint. Thats the only solution i can think of now. Did you also order the Sprint version of the nexus 6 from Amazon? When will yours will be arriving if you have?

Hmm this is really strange because there have been multiple reports here in XDA from people who claimed that they could insert their T-Mobile and AT&T sims, both of which I understand them to be GSM carriers, into a Nexus 6 bought from Sprint just fine.
Example of users reporting that their Sprint sets work fine with T-Mobile and AT&T sims:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/att-sprint-branded-phones-carrier-locked-t2955669
I wonder if there is a difference between those Nexus 6 bought directly from Sprint and those "Sprint Nexus 6" on Amazon.

It seems that both swiftunlocks and cellunlocker are unable to unlock Sprint Nexus 6. Apparently, they are only able to unlock GSM devices.

This is bad. I emailed Amazon and they confirmed the Sprint Nexus 6 listed on Amazon is indeed carrier-locked. Why would this be the case.....?!
No, I actually have one coming from O2 in the UK, which I hear might be SIM locked.
Maybe a dumb question but have you tried to set up your return through amazons website? You just click a few dragdown boxes and it's done. I've done this for many products and as long as I'm not at fault I'm never charged anything. In fact I did it yesterday with a z3. They even returned my shipping.
I contacted Amazon. They confirmed that the initial batches of Sprint Nexus 6 sold through Amazon were indeed unlocked. The subsequent batches are however locked to Sprint. This is so frustrating.

How to use Verizon upgrade on Nexus 6?

I'm on a family More Everything plan with shared data on Verizon and I finally became eligible for an upgrade. I'd like to know how I could use the upgrade to get a N6. What I've heard is that some people are upgrading to an iPhone 6+ and then selling it, then buying a N6 at full price. But I don't understand the details of that. Wouldn't the iPhone be activated/used at that point? How would I sell it at a new phone price? Also, I heard that Verizon charges a fee if the new phone isn't activated within a certain period after purchase. Would that be a problem if I bought the iPhone first (and didn't activate/open it), resold it, then waited for a N6 to become available to buy?

There is no problem buying a phone on contract, activating it, then giving it to someone else or selling it. The buyer takes a risk that you cancel your contract and skip out on the Etf, in which case Verizon will blacklist the phone. But they will not prevent you from selling the phone or someone else activating it. The buyer simply brings the phone to Verizon to obtain a SIM card.
So if I went into my VZW account online and ordered an iPhone 6+ with my upgrade, would it arrive in a retail box unactivated or does VZW activate it for you with the SIM installed?

It arrives unactivated with a SIM tied to your account. If your intent is to sell, then I would activate it, then switch back to your old phone. You could just sell it unactivated, but your account might get stuck with a pending activation..which might eventually fall off.
Will my old sim remain activated after I activate the new one? I'm upgrading from a DNA which uses a micro sim. If it takes a while to sell the iPhone I'd like to keep using my old phone. I've never sold a phone before.

It will not. Just go to a Verizon store and they will switch you back for free. Might be able to call and do it.
Hm, so would it make more sense in that case to buy the N6 first (whenever it becomes available), then use my upgrade to get an iPhone and resell it? That way I could immediately activate the sim in the N6 and not even touch the iPhone. Or does the sim have to first be activated with the iPhone because that's what VZW is expecting to see on the account?

Does it really matter? Verizon doesn't have any information in regards to a Nexus 6 release, if you want the phone, you would just purchase it from Motorola/Play Store/etc already and not count on Verizon to offer the phone. It'll work on Verizon network anyways.

Can someone enlighten me how purchasing Nexus 6 from Google is a viable option for Verizon? I understand you just need the chip, but plan-wise, there are no cheaper plans which remove the price of the phone in the plan, right? In other words, you can get the phone working, but aren't you still paying their high monthly rates?

Yeah but that goes for any phone you would buy from Verizon. You can save money if you know what you're doing. I got the droid turbo subsidized on launch day, sold it on craigslist and bought a note 4 for cheaper on craigslist the same day. Then I did it again to get the nexus. Technically I spent less than $100 to use those three phones since the end of October (when the turbo launched).

Well actually we do know it won't be sim locked, Verizon can't legally sim lock a phone that uses their LTE network.

OK, I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing something like how T-Mobile's charges less for their plans if you pay monthly for the full price of the phone. I even looked into their prepaid plans, and they're almost more expensive than the subsidized ones... Do you receive any discount on their Edge plan if you supply your own phone? Sorry if this is a little off-topic.

Oh no, that's because T-Mobile doesn't technically subsidize the devices, although obviously you pay less overall.
I'm not sure about a BYOD policy with the Edge plan, but I do know it's a very costly plan for what it is. As I mentioned, a little wheeling and dealing can get you a new device whenever you want for a whole lot cheaper.

If you supply your own phone for Verizon the monthly charge for that line is $15 not $40 (the price on contract). This only applies if you are not currently in a 2 year contract. You have to call them and they will switch it to $15 for the line which is the same price as if you had edge. The price for data remains the same.
Yet another useless thread :good:. First it's Verizon reps, now Motorola reps, what's next? Reported, hope it gets closed.
If there is any further questions about the N6 on Verizon please use this existing discussion thread.

[Q] Differences between Non-Branded Nexus 6 and Verizon Nexus 6

I've been doing research for the past couple of days and I have seen that when the Nexus 6 came out that there were basically just 2 different models out. The International and the North American models. I'm coming from a Galaxy S4 from Verizon and I honestly can say that I just find TouchWiz ugly. I have rooted it but it was too late, the damage Verizon has done already left a huge enough impact that I am too afraid to put a rom on it in fear of the consequences. It was my first smartphone and I was happy with it when I first got it and now I am not to fond of it any longer. With the way Verizon's new plans are, I'm hoping of buying the Nexus 6 from them and slowly paying it off.
I apologize for long intro so i'll get to the point. I am curious about the differences of the Nexus 6 straight from Google and the Nexus 6 straight from the Verizon store if I buy it from them. I would prefer to buy straight from Verizon since I'm a college student and money is very tight and the slow payments seem to work out better in the long run even though I will be paying more if I buy it straight from Verizon. , but if getting the "clean" Nexus 6 is worth the better investment then i'll save up more money and pay for it all right then and there.
I've also read that there have been issues in the past where people have bought a Nexus 6 elsewhere and when they came to Verizon to activate it, that Verizon turned them away and that it wasn't possible. Is this still happening ?
Lastly, if any of you have a Nexus 6 straight from Verizon:
- How has it held up to this point ?
- What are the different things Verizon has done to the phone that weren't there in the past ?
and any other advice you can give to me to make a good purchase decision.
I just want a smartphone that I can root, put roms on, experiment with on XDA, has near-vanilla android but also works with Verizon.
I apologize for such a long post and this is my first ever thread on XDA and i'm new so I hope you may bear with me. I just want to make sure I am giving enough information to where some of you guys can help get my questions answered so I won't resent purchasing a Nexus 6 straight from Verizon if I do.
Thank you very much for reading and helping if you choose to.
P.S. I'm unsure whether to post this in the General Forum for the Nexus 6 or the Help and Troubleshooting forum of the Nexus 6 . I apologize if I posted this in the wrong forum.

I have a N6 I bought in March from Verizon and I love it. Other than the small Verizon branding on the back, and two Verizon apps pre-installed (My Verizon Mobile and Verizon Visual Voicemail), I don't believe there is anything different between it and a Google bought Nexus.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
The preinstalled apps can likely be uninstalled as they were probably pulled in automatically based on your SIM card. From what I've read, the shipping firmware is the same as the Play Store/Motorola model.

That's great to hear honestly. If there is no difference other than two Verizon apps then this is officially my first choice for when I get a new device with Verizon. I'm hoping I am smart enough to root it, flash Pure Nexus and make it my own.
Thank you for the response.

That's also great to hear. Definitely going to get the Nexus 6 soon then once I can get a new phone. Getting really tired of my Galaxy S4.
I just bought a new 32gb unlocked blue nexus 6 at best buy today for $350 + tax
It was the best deal I could find. I traded in some games and got the total down to $317. The phone is amazing, I came from a verizon S5 and it was well worth the purchase not to see that TouchWiz **** all over my phone
Thanks for starting this discussion. I have a GS5, and I'm fed up with the Verizon crap but it's the best network around where I live.
My question, can you root the N6 purchased from Verizon?

Yep. 100% bootloader unlockable. I use wugs toolkit to unlock and flash custom recovery. Plus it's relockable if you need service.

What do you mean re-lockable if I need service?
Does anyone know if I can buy the Nexus 6 (unlocked) from Best Buy with the special they are having right now and use it on Verizon ? I was going to wait for 2 months to get an early upgrade by turning my phone in and getting the Nexus 6 but if I can buy it for 350 right now then I definitely want to jump on it. I am just curious if I can buy it from Best Buy and use it on Verizon without any issues. If I do buy it then what do I need to do in order to make it work with Verizon ?
I really want a phone I can root easily, flash roms and experiment with. The Nexus 6 seems like the perfect device and with it at $350 right now, its a steal !
Does anyone know if this is just a special and for how long ? Or is it indefinitely?

Service meaning repairs in case you have to send the phone in for some reason. It will work fine on Verizon. You can either activate it through Verizon and get a new SIM card or just switch an existing (already activated) nano SIM from an existing Verizon device into your new Nexus 6. Either method works fine.

Oh ! Okay, I see. Thank you.
On the best buy website it says its doesnt support CDMA but thanks for telling me otherwise. It gives me hope that I can get a decent phone for cheap and love it.

$350-399 the going rate now. They on clearance for the new ones probably in November. Best Buy will match Internet price. So as long as Amazon and others have that price can just tell them and they will look it up on their PC. If you have a Verizon nano sim can just pop it in. They have the IEMIs now so they can activate for you. Shouldn't have a problem. I cut down my micro sim to fit before they would activate them.

Forgot to address your first question. There are 2 unlocks. Carrier and bootloader. Previous poster was referring to bootloader unlock. They are all carrier unlocked except for ATT. ATT requires to pay for the device in full and be active on their service for 30 days before can use another sim. Bootloader unlock is for modding. We unlock the bootloader and if need to send for warranty we put back to stock and locked.

This answers similar question I've had since I have Verizon as my carrier. I found some good deals on swappa, and wondered if I got one from there, if I'd be able use it on Verizon.

You can use any on any carrier unless it is the ATT carrier locked. Also has to be NA version. Not International. I got Google version on Verizon. Everything works including tether on my Unlimited Data Plan.

North American. US and Canada. I looked on Swappa. They need to adjust their prices as the Market price decreases. They too high if can get new in box with full warranty for $350.

Wait, so the International one's won't work with Verizon? The one Best Buy is selling on clearance is the GSM International model. So even though its an amazing deal, It won't work with Verizon because its the International model ?

The US model is XT1103, which is what Best Buy should stock, and it will work on any US carrier. The XT1100 is the International model and would only work on AT&T/T-Mobile in the US (or any carrier that uses their network) as it doesn't have all the necessary bands for other carriers. Most places don't even carry the International model for sale in the US.

Okay, that helped clear up some questions I was having. Thank you. I guess its time to go buy that sweet Nexus 6 once I get my check. Ugh, i can't wait.
If you had to recommend a phone for a beginner who wants to root, put roms on his device and experiment with it, what would you recommend to them ?
