[Q] Unable to update, Software status:Modified - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

So i keep being prompted to get the new OTA update and whenever i try to download and install it, it reboots goes to the install screen, gets about 1/4 of the way through, says error and then reboots to an update unsuccessful page
After digging around my phone i also noticed it says my software was modified on the status page
But obviously ive never rooted this phone as its pretty much impossible at the moment
Has anyone experienced something similar and found a way to fix it?

did you disable any of the bloat? that might be your issue.....

Try a factory data reset but you will wipe your phone and lose all data and apps.

That's odd, I even blocked the OTA via adb and mine says official.

OK i tried both, neither worked, also when i boot into recovery i get qe 1/1 at the bottom left side of my screen

Decided to just get a replacement from motorola since I'm still under warranty, but thank you for the suggestions!

I am unable to obtain the moforoot util to do this. When I put in my ID on the moforoot page, it says my device is not supported. I know for a fact the model and current OS on it. Its 5.1 updated already which is probably why the website is rejecting my request to obtain the util.
I do not think the bootloader will allow me to downgrade. If anybody has a solution, please let me know.
Note: Using XT1254 w/ latest 5.1 update from Aug-Sept.

If you want to flash an official update that is greater than or equal to the version you're on now, you don't need mofo. You could use fastboot, rsdlite, Motorola device manager or the Verizon upgrade assistant. The upgrade assistant is probably the easiest way to go. That's the annoying pop up software you get whenever you plug your phone into your computer.

I tried all 3 different options and none of them work. Then I went into Verizon store and asked them to do it and they told me that they don't do that anymore. Only contacts, photos, etc.
The store told me to send it to Motorola for them to do it. I'm sure there is an ISP somewhere or some trick button internally for them to unlock the bootloader, but nobody is saying.
I am out of options, and I am ready to send it to whomever can fix it for me. PM me if you can guarantee to do it and send it back.
-Thanks

Send it to Motorola then. If your phone is less than a year old, they will send you a new one for free.

[HELP] OTA KitKat update error on rooted D950

I have a (previously) rooted D950, and I can't get the OTA At&t update to install. I've completely removed root, and double checked through root checker that it's gone, and the update errors out every time with a message about having been rooted.
I read another thread where some people report being able to retain root after receiving the update THEN downgrading and rooting 4.2.2., then installing the OTA again, but it seems that I jumped the gun and rooted first, which is now causing the install to error out.
Has anyone else experienced this? Found a workaround? Ideas? Totally frustrating.

Here is the link to a detailed guide . Dev hyelton's page includes links to AT&T ROMs.
If you need help with LG Flash Tool:
- Connect your phone with usb to laptop/computer and open device manager
- seek for Ports: COM & LPT, right click onto Android LTE usb port connection, click "properties", click "Advanced", then change port number to number 41, click "OK"
- DOWNLOAD LG Flash Tool and install .exe
- DOWNLOAD MegaLock.zip (3kb), unzipped (7kb)
- Exchange MegaLock.dll in your system folder "LG" with the unzipped MegaLock.dll file that you have downloaded
- Open LG Flash Tool, input .dll file of downloaded stock rom.zip folder and input .tot file of this folder
- Click onto USB instead of LAN, then click "OK"
- Left arrow at the window top should be enlightened now
- Click onto this arrow
- Wait for all popup windows telling milky way download and connections to fail
- Wait then for the check of CRC and .dll files
- One or all ports should be opened, "READY" enlightened
- Disconnect your phone from computer
- Connect again and watch the immediate start of the flashing process
- After completion you must install most of the app updates, update your LG and/or AT&T profile before installing kitkat update.zip
If you'll stick in updating stock rom to kitkat, watch my video on YouTube (it's about LS995 Sprint, but AT&T LG Flex will proof the same installation process):
Visit my blog at http://www.myreviewsofreviews.for the detailed description how to avoid bootloop during the installation of LG Kitkat update.zip via ADB sideload
Thanks, but this is not a fix. Unfortunately, that guide is of no use since his links are still down. Further, I was hoping for feedback from others who have experienced this issue, and found a resolution. I have read that this is also happening on devices that have not been rooted.
I am not looking to flash a rom through FlashTool. I'm looking to fix the OTA error. All I want to do is install the OTA update.

Not sure what you were hoping for but the guide is correct process for your problem. You need to flash back to 4.2, don't touch anything in the way of modifying system files or deleting bloatware, sign into your main Google account, update all your apps...then root the phone and when it reboots look for the ota. I would give it a couple min to setup after flashing back to 4.2 so that it successfully finds the update rather than telling you you're on the most current software. I had your exact problem too, I was one of the first AT&T users on here to take the update I tried everything to
A: retain root with supersu features and some root cloaker programs etcetera
B: factory reset, call AT&T, to get them to push the update again because I just could not get it to successfully flash without detecting suspicion of root.
Flashing back to 4.2 to retain root worked for me over 4 times now on 3 different flex phones (I had some hardware and then software issues on my replacement model)

You didn't understand my post at all it seems, I gave you the instructions to flash back to STOCK which would have fixed your problem. I did accidentally word my post incorrectly saying "flash BACK to 4.2" obviously I knew you were on 4.2, so clearly I meant use the aforementioned guide to flash back to stock then take the update. Looks like you went another route, congrats

Huh? Wut
Not sure where things went wrong here.....
Me thinks some thread cleaning is in order...
Stand-by....
Cleaning finished.
Come on folks, let's relax and take a breath. Sometimes things just don't work and there's little to be done about it. If common known procedures don't work, then hopefully something else will, and just move along to something else.
Or in this case, the device is being returned which of course solves all.
No need for anybody to get all bent out of shape, what started out as being helpful, just took a bad turn somewhere for unknown reasons.
Relax, be cool....

KitKat update on ATT G FLEX running on Tmobile.
This might be a stupid question . I have my ATT G FLEX D950 running on Tmobile. It is on Jellybean . I am unable to pull the Kitkat update and it says "Phone is not registered on network". I am assuming I need to get my phone on ATT network to pull the update. Am I right? is there any other way out ?

Kinda, yes.
I had the same problem. My phone was never activated on the ATT network so it would not recognize it. You have 2 options:
Get a prepaid sim from ATT, use it once and than put your Tmobile sim back in there or ask a friend that has ATT to use the sim for a few minutes. A text or a phone call is all you need.
Worked great for me.

[Q] New System Update

I am having difficulties updating to the newest system update on the stock rom. I am rooted and have unlocked my bootloader, so that may have something to do with it. I am also running on straight talk, but I doubt that would be an issue, as it says it's already downloaded it and it just needs to install it. When I click install now, it turns the phone off, does the little thingy, then reboots. Upon rebooting, everything loads up, and a popup appears saying that the update failed, and then every hour it pops up asking to update. Do you know why this is happening and how to fix it, or a way to permanently suppress this popup?

You need to be completely stock to take the OTA. If you haven't flashed Mex or Bell, I have a zip, maybe flashable (can't test, broke phone) that contains a completely stock /system. Or you can just backup your apps and flash the stock AT&T fastboot.
Post with link to zip.

Yes, you clear the cache. But if you want to leave yourself open to be vulnerable to the Heartbleed bug, a pretty serious security issue, then by all means, leave your front door unlocked so hackers can tap into your device and take anything they want.

I'd say it's more like posting on Craigslist that you're going on vacation and then leaving all the doors open with your debit/credit card on the coffee table. It's a pretty serious bug, and according to wikipedia, 1.5% of the most popular 800,000 websites are still vulnerable to the bug, not to mention running a sideloaded app or connecting to a malicious website.

If you flash the OTA update manually using something like Philz recovery, you can see the progress on the screen and where it stops updating. For me, it kept hanging on updating the smartactions.apk, which was because I had previously (long time ago) merged updates of the app to my System partition (along with a few other apps that were updated). This will mess up any attempt to do an OTA update, because your "stock" ROM is no longer stock.
I ended up having to flash back to the real stock with Mythtools, then install the OTA zip manually.
If you can't find the zip in your cache, you can download it directly from this post (thanks @skeevydude): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52657363&postcount=13

Are you rooted/ have safestrap/ have bootloader unlocked??? You could fix the problem without too much difficulty if you do.
If not, a factory reset may be your only option. If that doesn't fix the issue, I'd say talk to verizon or moto about getting a new phone.

Sunshine is a BL unlock exploit for phones with locked BL's.
What I mean by returning to stock rom is reinstalling the firmware. It is very possible that the OTA did not correctly download to your phone/ not install properly.
Thank you for your information, 1ad.
I may try the way you said next time.

Root Removal

Hi I have a DROID Turbo that currently has the MOFO Rooted ROM installed. I have to send my in for the screen replacement, but need to remove the Root as this voids the warranty. I have went to the SU app and clicked on the remove root, but am unsure if that is all I need to do besides wiping my cell.

I had to use the screen replacement last summer for my first Turbo, which was purchased from Verizon around Thanksgiving 2014. I never took an OTA update and got MOFO root as soon as it came out. I'm not sure if this works for everyone, but the only way I was able to have the "Modified" Software status on bootloader changed to Unmodified before I sent it back for replacement was to plug it into a windows computer with Verizon's Upgrade Assistant installed, wipe everything and reset to factory (backup anything you want to save first), and let it update. I couldn't read the screen but after letting the busted phone update, I do remember somewhere within the Verizon application it stated the software status was Unmodified (or what ever else it's supposed to say).
Not sure if it will work for you but it's something to try.
Thank you for the info... I'll give it a try

If that doesn't work, you might have to purchase moforoot or Sunshine in order to flash an unrooted image, and to get rid of the Modified line.
I tried the rootjunky unroot, but still see the modified line in boot. I also tried the VZW update tool, but the communications seem to stop around 17 of 20 packets... I've been stumped all day... Can you post a link for the MOFO unmodified image? Or the sunshine rout... I've paid for the MOFO root, so maybe I don't need to buy it...
Thanks in advance

I'm not sure about this article's reliability, but it looked like it could help you.
Or you can download these files for the appropriate firmware version and flash them after unlocking with Sunshine.
Your best bet would be to flash the stock system image with mofo. Unfortunately, I was unable to find the flashable moforoot unrooted image.
I'm unsure if this would change the Modified line to Unmodified; if it doesn't than I have no idea.
Additionally, Motorola offers a repair service where you can send in a device to be repaired either for a small fee or for free. With the paid option, they don't inspect the actual device, and they send you a new phone. This could be used as a last resort.
I tried the article... The downgrade didn't work... I'll see if sunshine will work...
The sunshine one is the same one I tried earlier from rootjunky... The software line in the boot still sez modified, but the software in the about phone area sez official.. Dunno...
You might have to just use the Motorola service. Why do you want to get rid of the Modified line, again?

You don't have to use Verizon's service. There's two options you can use, both from Motorola: a paid one and a free one. The link is in one of my previous posts.
Someone on the forum said that with the paid option, they send you a new (or very well refurbished) Turbo without looking at your current device (so they wouldn't penalize you for it being modded.)
The free option is a bit more iffy. The same someone said that they check the device, but Motorola didn't specify if they check the software, or just the hardware.
The paid option would be your best bet, but you can opt for the free option if you feel a bit risky.

It half-worked for me. During boot-up, it doesn't give me the "unlocked bootloader" warning, but it *does* give me a "The OS installed is different" message. Looks similar, but the text is yellow instead of orange.

I'm trying to get rid of the "your device has loaded a difference operating system". Did you find the way to get the phone back to 100% stock?
First off, wanna give a HUGE THANKS to joemossjr for releasing this package AND for that .bat installer! Long story short, I was about to either claim warranty or Jump! (T-Mobile insurance/upgrade program) due to me trying to hook a USB Thumbdrive in over USB OTG (Kingston 16GB) and then there were slowdowns and app crashes, everywhere... heck it was to the point where I kept getting spammed with android.process.acore keeps crashing messages! Couldn't use many internet apps, no phone calls, and could barely text just to name a few.
I do got a suggestion though: is it possible to have a modified version of the June ROM package on Sprint & T-Mobile to where instead of having the stock boot.img, you can have the modified version with the Magisk root access? That would be great and somewhat of a convenience (YMMV; I used this patched boot.img on the 26.2 version and both system updates & t-mobile visual voicemail setup kept falling flat on its face everytime)
Thanks again, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!
