Screen mirroring will work as long as you are using a KitKat ROM and Mirror Enabler installed (needs root). The latest version of the Chromecast is supposed to have experimental screen mirroring for ALL KitKat devices, but I haven't tried this out personally. Performance of the mirroring will depend mostly on your connection speed.
Personally, I hardly ever use the screen mirroring, it just feels clunky. It's much better if the app you're using supports Chromecast.

Sorry for the late reply. I personally haven't tried it, but you should be able to send your videos to Chromecast using AllCast - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.cast&hl=en

Why didn't your post the playstore links?
Tried the app, couldn't cast anything (hoped for entire tab casting, later saw it should allow only casting various videos on various webpages).
Maybe it works and would appeal to some but it's not really intuitive..
This gives vGet some competition. Thanks for letting us know.

Does this only cast sites of services already compatible with chromecast? I tried it on videos at amctv.com and couldn't get it to work.

Check out the Chromecast description, not all videos will cast, and that makes sense.
Amctv.com videos aren't in a format that the native Chromecast player understands.

Thank you. Tab casting is cool idea, but it will drain the phone battery just like screen mirroring (Miracast). Let's see if we can make that happen with Chromecast.
Added the links to Play store as well.

About a month initially with the Chromecast "preview" SDK and then a week to update it after the final SDK was released. It took longer because we didn't use the Cast SDK's companion library. We didn't like the default look and feel of Google's remote control buttons all squished up in one corner of the screen. Hope it helps.
...and with the latest update of vGet and its unusually high cost, this browser looks like a sweet deal. I might give it a better test this time around

Mirror all apps?
Generally, not. You can try mirror4cast but it doesn't work on all devices and from the video seems to lag heavily.
Google is working on Android device mirroring (the beta is available if you have a rooted Chromecast), but no guarantee it will be supported on a wide variety of devices - we'll have to wait and see.
Spotify, Dolphin Browser, Samsung Dongle
Only apps which specifically support Chromecast or can Share to a Chromecast-enabled app will work with Chromecast. Chromecast is not a replacement for a HDMI output.
Think of it more like a video output accessory that works for supported apps.
If you want to see everything from your device on your TV, one of the many wireless output dongles like Samsung AllCast Share, will work better for your purpose.
Chromecast is an autonomous device (so its output is not limited to the device's screen resolution, nor does it require another device to remain on, unless content is being sent from the other device).
See links in my signature for more info.

Yeah, I'm pretty upset about this. Every miracast page I visit says ALL android devices with 4.2 and above are supported. So why not android 5.0 on Nexus 6? Is Google really forcing Nexus 6 owners to use chromecast only?!? What if we don't have, or want to use, wifi? I just want to mirror my brand new Nexus 6 to my TV, not stream content. The google support page lists the Nexus 6 & 9 as supported chromecast devices, but not for miracast.
Any possibility of a someone enabling this option? Please help!?! I think the proper hardware is there.
I find it very hard to believe that the Nexus 6 doesn't support Wifi Direct or Miracast at the hardware level. It's probably just disabled in the factory images.
A custom rom should be able to use it. If not, there's something profoundly wrong with the phone.
Then again, there's still suspiciously no Wi-Fi Alliance certification for the Nexus 6.

Please explain further. What do I need to do to enable Miracast? I'm a bit of a noob. Do I modify build.prop? I am unlocked and rooted.

Problem solved traded in my Nexus 6 for a Note 4. This feature was important to me. Hopefully Lollipop will be available soon and Miracast will still work.

Miracast uses WiFi Direct
Code:
// connected device to PC via adb (usb)
$ adb root
$ adb remount
$ adb pull /system/build.prop
(add persist.debug.wfd.enable=1 to build.prop using text editor)
(Build Prop Editor app)
$ adb push build.prop /system/
$ adb shell chmod 644 /system/build.prop
$ adb reboot
Edited. Initially this didn't look like it worked however that's not entirely true. I am now able to connect to my push2tv adapter however I'm have stability issues. In did notice there was a WiFi network going in and out which has caused me problems in the past (this setup is in my car). I'll try again out in the open and report back.
This is a real pain in the ass, so if I want to mirror my screen at my gfs house, what are my options?
Connect the chromecast to her wifi? There's no other direct connection way?
After modifying the build.prop I was able to get miracast working without WiFi on my Nexus 6 (thanks s107ken)! It mirrors my screen perfectly and plays web videos and youtube. However, it will NOT play Netflix or Hulu videos. The sound works and the controls show up, but no video. Just a black screen. I thought this may be because of a HDCP or DRM issue.
Any thoughts or workarounds? Maybe the EZCast app? Please help!
Thanks

Do you need an app to mirror any Android devices to Chromecast?

I am thinking of releasing an app that can mirror any android devices (starting from Android 2.3 up to android 5.1) to Chromecast receiver.
Since google's Chromecast app can support quite a lot devices, I am not sure if there are still enough interests to mirror android devices with old versions?or to mirror new android devices that Chromecast app do not support?
I did develop such an app, but never released it to public, it's working quite well actually.
Please let me know if you are interested in it, and I can post free versions here.
Please , go ahead. and Let us have a look at it .

We will release a version that works on rooted devices first, just to check our native implementation for the chromecast mirroring protocol.
Yes, we also have a miracast receiver, more info will be revealed here.
Thanks for your patience on this app.

@timdoggg, Yes, it's beging developed, and working very well, but right now, it requires rooting to get the audio. Can you tell me your Android version? why is google Chromecast app not working for your device?
I will try to post something in this thread late this month.

Have a rooted Nook HD+( on CM12.1 - lollipop 5.1 ) and chromecast 2015(new version). Regular casting works fine, but there is something preventing mirroring . When hitting casting selection the screen abruptly disconnects. I've tried a program called Mirrorenabler and it also will not mirror. A report by someone using CM11 and some custom rom reported mirroring working fine on Nook HD+ so its not a hardware issue. Does anyone have any thoughts ??
Thanks,
Al
In order for Chromecast app mirror to work, google play services must be installed into system partition. Your android most likely does not have it.
Our Chromecast sender app does not use Google play services, so it should work, please visit this thread later for the apk.
Hey,
I can also confirm that unfortunately on Nook HD+ on CM12.1 mirrorenabler doesn't work, nevertheless on cm11 latest built mirror enabler works great. But still both CM11 and CM12.1 for me are unstable, actually cm12.1 is worst for me getting a lot of download and apps installation slow down, on cm11 I get a lot of keyboard droppings when typing in the browser but gennerally the experience is a lot better.
So would love to test on stock (4.0.4) your app apparently with root.
Thanks

My CM12.1 on Nook HD+ is not as good as 5.01 that I previously had. If you get Trickster Mod ( to increase responsivness ) and increase read ahead buffer 768 and get Glove Xperia ( to adjust screen sensitivity if needed ) you might like CM12.1 better

Because there is no way to sideload anything into the unit...It has virtually no place to put apps.
CCast is really just a glorified Chrome Browser when you get right down to it. When you cast something to it, It loads up a webpage (player/receiver app) that has the code to play the content you sent. That is why it requires internet connection to operate because it needs to be able to access those URLs to load it's player apps.
I doubt the CCast even has enough storage space built into it to run Kodi.
It's very different from a FireTV which is basically just an Android stick device with a Amazon branded Launcher.
If you want Kodi you are better off with one of those cheap AMLOGIC 905 Android boxes. You get a remote, can expand the storage capacity with an SD Card, and get a full Android to run any APK you want including Netflix and Hulu. If you shop around you can find them for just a few dollars more than a CCast costs.
PLUS most units are compatible with Win10 Cast To Device feature.

Your TV probably runs AndroidTV which is very much like FireTV in that it is running a full android operating system with a custom loader. Unfortunately even AndroidTV has some limitations in the Play Store of what apps you can put on it which is why it hasn't sold very well.
Not that you can avoid it these days, but I advise my friends to ignore all the smart features when buying a TV and just look for the best bang for buck on resolution and picture quality. If you want a smart TV it is much better to buy an external box which can be upgraded easily without having to wait for the manufacturer to catch up to current tech.
There was a time where you could get a great TV sans any Smart capabilities without paying the SMART TV premium but today just about all TVs have some smart built in. They rarely get updated, Rarely get the same support as native Android does and eventually that processor will be too slow to run the latest and greatest software.
TV can last years and still work but how many have an Android device that is over 5 years old and still useable?
I say find the dumbest TV you can find that has a great picture and add whatever smarts you want externally!
They are even selling TV mounting hardware to hide the box and wiring!
Thank you for the input, getting my old Nexus 5 setup to be the streaming device to cast kodi to Chromecast.

Does the N5 have an HDMI output? (I think it does with an adapter...
You could just plug that into the TV and add Kodi to it. Then use any Kodi remote (like the Official or Yatse) to control the device from your current phone.
You wouldn't even need the ccast then.
