[Q] Replacing cracked glass on Note 4 - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My very late, in rush butt started running without realizing that my phone fell out. I got the phone back from a stranger after multiple attempts to unlock my phone and keep it. Anyways, my friends and I, we came to conclusion that my phone was ran over by a car, face down on the asphalt. Tech21 screen protector on it has multiple holes and dents from the surface of the asphalt. Luckily enough, everything is fine but the screen, of course. It cracked every where. Every tallest bumps of the road left a crack on the screen. I can barely read but actual screen is FINE. THANK GOD!!
SOOO end of story. I ordered repair kit on eBay but I was wondering if anyone went through changing the glass on Note 4 yet? am i the first one?? T.T
Edit: it's my first time replacing the glass but I've dealt with similar stuff before. If anyone would like a video of it, I could try to record it. If I crack my screen, people could cry with me or laugh at me.

If a car ran you phone over I am very sure you have internal damage. Good luck
BAD ASS NOTE 4

Dropped my phone while riding my motorcycle. Glass cracked but the lcd and digitizer works fine. I ordered new glass online and called all the cell phone repair shops in my city. 1 person said that they have done it before so will be taking my phone this weekend to see if it can be fixed.

It would work better if you had the machine to separate the glass from the screen. I will say if the screen is badly cracked up you might have a really low success rate.
why not just buy a whole screen? they are under $200 the last time i checked on ebay. less risk and less headache.
you can even try just the glass after you replace the screen just to do it and if it works you have a back up, if not no loss.
i have a machine and hardly use it cuz how bad people break their screens today, whole screen is the safe bet.
i don't know if its the same in your area but most places charge $100-150 to replace the glass and most places don't reapply new adhesive to the digitizer and glass . so the glass is being held onto the phone by the frame only.

Like your signature says, it's a badass Note 4. I've been handling android phones since MotoDroid and I can guarantee you that there's no internal damage to Note 4. Im still a flashaholic and my phones battery life and performance hasn't been effected at all. Yay me

I agree completely. I dropped the phone on the road while riding and except the top right corner crack on screen there is no damage. Somewhat surprising because i must be atleast 30 mph and the force with which it fell, should have broken into pieces. Not even the back cover came off the phone.

I just finished after 5 hours of job. I'll post pictures when i can with my friends phone. I got b

My screen cracked while snowboarding and Repairs Universe offers a new glass/digitizer assembly for $189. I contacted Samsung and they offered to repair it for $197.77, so for an additional $8 someone will do it for you. The only downside is you'll be without a phone for about 1.5-2 weeks.
I was worried about the stuff from Repairs Universe being genuine Samsung parts (wanna make sure I get a real 1440p screen and not Chinese knock off crap that's only 720p), so I contacted them. They assured me that it is a genuine Samsung screen, but they could have been lying to me just to get a sale. For that extra $8 I'll get genuine Samsung parts and it'll be getting done properly by someone that know what they're doing.
So for anyone that needs a new screen those are two options for you.

That's good to know, thanks for sharing. Yes, I agree, I'd go directly to Samsung as well, considering price is roughly the same.
Any chance you can share the phone/email of the department at Samsung you contacted? Would be good to have that handy.

I went to their website on my phone, clicked on contact us, and did a live chat with one of their customer service people. It'll ask you to choose which product you're contacting them about (phones, TVs, appliances, etc) then what kind of phone. They'll ask for your IMEI number and all that jazz. I found them to be quite polite and helpful.
The only down side is you'll be without a phone for about 2 weeks, so make sure you have a backup phone to use or prepare yourself for terriblewithdrawal from not having your Note...

Guys the people you want to contact isn't Samsung. It's their only authorized repair service in the United States. The name is RSI found in both Plano and Hurst, Texas. Here's their website: www.repairsvc.com
Dealing with them directly should reduce your wait time.

Yes, that's the price they charge. I was letting everyone know that these are the guys that Samsung uses. They use genuine OEM parts and are the only repair center in the United States authorized to do Samsung repairs. If you look earlier in the thread, someone said that Samsung charges $197.77 with a 1.5-2 week turn around. As you just said yourself, this method would be $5 cheaper and 2x faster than going through Samsung to get the same place to repair your phone. Just was putting it out there if someone wanted 100% assurance that they were getting genuine OEM parts but didn't want to wait 1.5-2 weeks that Samsung quoted them.

Yup same reason I haven't cancelled the tmo 'jump' subscription. You do have to factor in the $10 per month subscription price though, so if you break your phone in 10 months, it's $275.

T-Mobile insurance to replace phone is $175 I just filed a claim on Saturday and got a new phone not refurbished today. The only problem is I had a Note 4 in White but they sent Gray since White was not in stock. I called T-Mobile and complained and got a $30 credit applied to my account so I really just paid $145

Is it "obvious" that the phone took a fall? If not, then you could probably get it replaced by calling AT&T's handset repair department (800-801-1101, I think) and just lie to them.
I never had a screen issue with my 8125, but I did brick around 7 of them from various issues with flashing custom roms. As long as I was careful with how I worded it, I got a new phone each time.

and another one...i do feel better now after i broke mine, since it is a tilt u should be able to go through service see how much that will cost, if its over $200 u might be better off doing it urself by getting a screen elsewhere
My screen was cracked after 4 days of having it :')
It was inside my pocket without any further protection and i walked against something. Did cost me 136 euro to fix the screen.

Unless you insured it somehow, you're going to have to pay to replace it. I don't see why anyone should pay for your accident if you didn't arrange coverage for it somehow.
they don't allow you to get insurance on it.
AT&T might not, but you can add it to your homeowners/renters policy or secure outside insurance from a third party (Safeware is one that I'm aware of). Mine is covered under my homeowner's insurance at a very low cost.
aite. but what do i do?

You go buy a replacement or get the screen fixed. They're not going to believe that you didn't break it yourself. I believe PocketPC Techs advertises that they can fix the screen.

I cracked my screen just s few days after getting it. I just repaired it this morning.
Contact njbridges here on the forum, or go to www.phoneystore.com and order the LCD from him. You have to get the whole LCD, as the digitizer portion is not available as a separate component. It cost me $120 + shipping to the US. He even included all the tools you need to make the repair. It literally took me 15 minutes to do. There are 4 torx screws under the display to remove, and then you use the separator tool that is included to remove the top housing. Once you've done that, unplug the LCD, slide it out, slide the new one in, reconnect the LCD, reassemble the top plastics, replace the screws, power back on, and you're done.
It's really simple to do. Why pay someone else to do it (especially if you're given the correct tools for the job).
Regards,
Jeff
Send it to at&t just don't tell them that the screen is broken tell them that it doesn't turn on, it worked for me and my 8125.

Me, too.
I just got back from Panama City, Panama where I was without my screen for a week. I talked on my phone while leaving the mall, put it in my pocket and pulled it out 15 minutes later after getting out of a taxi and the screen was broken. I'll be calling AT&T as this is my business' corp account. I had insurance on my Treo and my 8125, but think I may have dropped it on this one.
It does suck. The phone was three weeks old. I've gone back to my 8125 that's gone through hell and back without any problems....
I've got my fingers crossed or else I'll just order the screen myself.

Any time. One thing to note, putting the outer plastic cover back on is a little bit of a bear - it's a tight fit. you will need to put some serious pressure on the housings to snap them together. It's especially difficult on the power button side of the phone. I used a small flat screwdriver between the top and the keyboard to support the carrier plastics on the top and then used thumb pressure to snap the top plastic to the carrier.
Jeff
As someone who has been through quite a few exchanges with Cingular (none since AT&T officially took over), and as a former employee of a Cingular warranty service provider, I can tell you that they do cover screen damage under very specific circumstances.
When going through the process on the phone, they will ask you basic questions like:
"Is there a pink strip under the battery?" - Indicates water damage
"Was the phone ever dropped from a distance greater than 2 feet?" - This is the important question for screen damage. Damage sustained from drops of 18 inches or less are covered.
It is a reasonable assumption that a cell phone, which is handheld most of the time, will be dropped on occasion.
The biggest question is whether or not the phone shows signs of "physical abuse". If you can answer no to that, then you should have no problem getting your phone exchanged.

Cracked my note 4 screen.....

I just cracked the screen on my note 4 [emoji47]. It is an extremely thin hairline crack that can't be felt by rubbing on the screen but can be felt by passing your nail over it. It's not really noticiable unless the screen is off. Since this is the first time this has ever happend to me im not quite sure what to do. I do have the JUMP! service which includes insurance but how much would i have to pay to get this cracked screen replaced through jump?
What should i do? [emoji22]
Dang, I'm hurting with you!
I think the Co pay is $150 they wouldn't repair it I think they will exchange it.
How did it happen?
It's 175 deductible unless it went up lately

According to Samsung advertising, you should be able to drop the Note 4 on a concrete slab from waist high a thousand times without a problem. You only dropped yours once - has to be defective! Check the video below.

I do have a case on it which i specifically bought with the fastest shipping option on amazon to never have my phone without a case. But it still cracked.. Must have been a tiny rock thats taller than the 7mm lip this case has. I had been looking for a glass screen protector since i purchased the case 2 weeks ago and couldn't find any with good reviews Unlucky me.
What do you guys think i should do? Should i file a claim and pay the $175 or should i wait it out until there are screen repair kits and fix it myself? Or do i have any other options?

If it doesn't bother you that bad, you could just wait until it spreads or gets to where it does bother you... Personally, I am obsessive about such things, so I would replace it using JUMP!... I have this as a screen protector - http://www.bodyguardz.com/screengua...-skins-films.html?dir=asc&order=sort_priority -, and different cases for different "outings" a thin Sammie-case, and an Otterbox Defender... Otterbox Defender only comes in black right now, but I HAD to get max protection RIGHT away... Instances like your's happen to us all after all... Anyway, the PURE Glass Protector is great feeling and very protective... I have used them on 3 devices thus far, and stick with them... They have a replacement program that gives you super discounts if you need to replace it also, instead of having to buy another (Advantage Program)... Anyway, hope these options will help... I know how much this new device being damaged must bother you, but the replacement you get will be well protected I am sure (plus, the protection is available now, where it wasn't, when we first received our devices)... You can have these items waiting on your next device, if you choose to!! Let me know if you find other alternatives worth exploring, these are just my favorite options as of now...

If it bugs you a lot, i'll file a claim. It's not easy to fix it yourself since most samsung phones the digitizer and LCD is glued together. Very hard to remove it separately if you're not experienced. If you prefer to do it yourself, it is best to order it as one piece but be prepared to pay a pretty penny which would guaranteed to exceed $175.
I feel for the OP. I just got my Note4 and the thought of cracking it's gorgeous screen scares me. Unfortunately I have to wait until I get paid to order a case for it. Until then I have a nice padded case for my Kindle Paper white that I can use.

Note 4 T-Mobile
i think i cracked mine too in the middle, right. Its small. And i have no idea how it happend. The phone never fell of my hands or hit it with something. Its a T mob N4, maybe the T Mob version its not the same quality as the N4 for europe?
Your phone it cracked because you or someone else has knowingly /unknowingly mishandled your phone.
If you say one doesn't notice it unless the screen is off, then it may not be that bad... BUT if it bother's much, the $175 deductable is the cheapest route in getting it fixed. Technically it'll be a replacement, so better than getting it fixed. They'll say its a refurb, but its new.

Note 4 scratches/cracks itself!!!

So today as I was whatsapping and after sending my messaging I turned the screen off to place my note 4 on the table. As I did so while the phone was still in my hand I noticed a crack/ scratch form itself.
Naturally I took it back to Samsung whom refused to take it back saying it was my fault. In the UK we have a sales of goods act in which the dealer must prove that there is no inherent fault if the product is faulty within 6 months. They just outright refused me.
I will give the head office a call tomorrow and if that gets me nowhere I'll take it to a small claims court.

Ouch. I am not in the UK but I am interested to see how this all turns out
Thanks, the worst part is that I actually watched as the scratch formed itself and grew bigger.
My hypothesis is that it may have been caused by heating and cooling of the phone.
My Note 4 did get pretty warm one time at which point it throttled itself. Hope someone at Samsung actually
knows how the UK law operates and sorts this out.
That seems like a crack, do you have a gap to the near edge there ? Im pretty sure the tiny gaps the phone has are to prevent exactly this type of cracking the screen against the metal edge due to heat cycles
Update: There are now three scratch/cracks which are parallel. I am beyond upset with Samsung and their unwillingness to sort this issue out.
I hope this doesn't happen to me x_x I doubt anyone would believe me if I told them that at best buy or something
Holy sh*t dude.
Let me know how this goes tomorrow. That is NOT cool.
That's not looking good at all, you should repost your story and photos on Samsung's Facebookpage and Google Plus page for everyone to see and hope that they will reply to you there. It might be a way to get around the denied reply you got from techsupport.
/ Magnus
You obviously have a faulty unit. Raise hell and don't give up until they replace it.
Another "phone crack by itself" thread? Those usually don't fly too well here and usually amounts to, the OP just talking a lot of hot air I'm just eating the cost of repair if he doesn't have insurance.

Cool story bro. You wouldn't believe it until it happens to you. At the end of the day, if I were to scratch or crack my phone, I wouldn't give a **** and just replace the screen myself.
But in this case, I am disappointed with a phone I purchased less than 2 weeks ago. I'd expect it to be defect free for £630 and if it does have a defect Samsung should have taken it back.
I've never owned an Apple phone before, but I have purchased headphones from the apple store before which when it went faulty after 11 months they swiftly refunded it according to the 'sales of goods act' which the manager lady there said so herself. The lads at Samsung need a sales law seminar.
I see little leprechauns in my garden at night and no one believes me.
My Note 2 has a crack that runs diagonally from the upper left to the lower right. One single continuous crack that mysteriously showed up out of the blue. No spider webbing or whatever. I did NOT drop my phone. I did not witness the crack appear, as the OP, but did notice it shortly after I had been for a walk out in the heat. I have always been convinced that it was a fault in the glass to make it crack in this way. Phone still works fine and I never pursued the issue with Samsung (I had owned the phone approximately 7 months when said crack occurred.) I work at a college and have seen a huge amount of cracked screens...all spiderwebbed and nasty...mine is just the one diagonal edge to edge anomaly. So yeah, I believe it could happen. Good luck getting Samsung or the carrier to do anything about it though. I do wish you well on your endeavor.

If you have the option, just try a different location to do the exchange. That doesn't look like a typical crack.
Happened to my s4, the thread is still going I think. It cracked like that in my pocket. I think it was from heat of my thigh and the cool air or something. Samsung told me I must have dropped it for that to happen. And in the end I sold it on eBay for spares and got like £200 for it.... Best of luck.

I hope extreme cold to warm won't make that happen.. It's about to be that freezing time of the year x_x
Could you update the OP with the additional cracks?

That got me scared because I have a scratch in a similar place - not reaching the border and much smaller though. I hope it's just a scratch..
Samsung really became Samsuck lately.....
I'll never go back to Samsung again after I replace my S-2. The best smartphone made by Samsung ever. All the rest is a pure miss by them.
To OP and fellas with cracked screens....good luck on your way and a pro tip......Don't buy Samsung anymore...they just need money....your money....that is all their aim is....purchase another device which is "better"....sadly...

[Q] Just dropped my phone and shattered the screen

No Moto Care, no case, no brains obviously.
Are these screens self replaceable? Does Motorola have a screen repair program? I bought the phone in late November...
kicking myself..guess i will get a case now..
I had moto replace the screen for free on my 2013 model, they offer one free replacement due to broken screen. The screens are replaceable but not the glass only. Since its fused to the display. Etradesupply.com has the screens and they are reputable

I'd imagine that it wouldn't be too easy to replace the screen, just getting the back off without damaging it is a task. I'd send it in for repair, even if it costs an extra $100. The X is too nice a phone to do something like that yourself. Just my opinion.
For those who may need to know in the future, Motorola will exchange the phone for $125 plus tax. for a CC deposit of $500 they will send it out first, then you send back the damaged phone.

That's pretty fair. You almost don't need insurance at that rate.

I went this route myself, my phone was delivered to their service center today. They claim a 4 day turnaround before the replacement gets shipped out. I personally couldn't afford the $500 hold, and I have a 2nd Gen G that'll work until I get a X back.
I agree it's more than a fair price. Lesson learned on the screen on the 2nd Gen X, it seems more fragile than other phones I've owned.

I actually replaced just the glass on mine. Its not completely fused to the digitizer. Thats incorrect information. Its just glued on. You can separate them with enough patience and heat, it just takes time to work it slowly. Its not an issue whatsoever.
I also dropped my phone two weeks back and the screen cracked. I started a customer support chat with Motorola and they offered to replace the phone for free. They did ask if it was ordered via moto maker tho.
I received my replacement from Motorola Germany today :victory:

I want to do this. Did you have to disassemble the phone?

Nope. Toughest part is just not damaging the frame and getting the screen started off peeling up. If you can get a really thin blade in between there to start off, and then user a guitar pick from there to gently pry it off the digitizer while using a lot of heat. Just work very slowly! Took me about 20-30 minutes total to get the screen off the digitizer. Don't put much if any pressure of the digitizer though!

Thank you so much! I have had some practice on an older galaxy it went glued just taped put I got the feel for how to go slow and not break the digitizer. Where did you get your replacement glass and supply's.

Ebay :good:

So I cracked my screen...

I dropped my phone today and the screen cracked. It's still usable, just has two ugly cracks along the front. Anyone know of a easy way to replace the screen?

Might as well have Motorola replace it, it costs $175 for a new device, but you have to mail them you're busted one first.

Agreed. I had a similar issue and had an overall good experience with Motorola repair. Took about ten days from start to finish.
Do I just go to there website? I don't have insurance.

Pretty much. Start at their online repair site:
https://motorola-global-portal.cust...ZS8xNDUxMjUxNzM4L3NpZC9zSnk3cDJGbQ==#/service
So I contacted Motorola and they will fix it for $175 and if I want it back fast I would have to pay another $40 in s/h. With that amount of money, I could just buy a brand new one for another $50. Any thoughts?

Yes it's 250 on Amazon. Probably a better choice.
Also do yourself a favor and buy a case
OK but now I'm in a dilly of a pickle... I have the option to buy the 6p. My concerns are that the 6 isn't gonna receive anymore love now that it's going on two years old. Would it be wise to purchase the 6 again? Or should I just upgrade to the 6p? I love the 6, I do. But...and yes there's always a but lol. But the 6p intrigues me. I've researched and I know its not much of an upgrade but I love the thought of the fingerprint scanner and the overall look of it. But it is slightly smaller in size and I'm a big dude...but (there it goes again), I could always get a case to make up the difference... Anyways, I would love you guys feedback on my first world dilemma lol. Thanks!
get the 6 and save the money for the next nexus 6 upgrade before the end of next year with a proper cpu like the 820

Just an update if anyone cares lol. I went ahead upgraded to the 6p. Farewell my fellow shamu-ers. If anyone is interested in purchasing my 6, pm me. Good day.
If you still have the phone and aren't afraid of breaking it you could try a glass only replacement. I have never done it before until yesterday. I ordered the wire from eBay and made a simple jig to hold the wire so I had both hands. I successfully removed the glass. Hooked it back up still works. Am waiting for the new glass and loca glue (didn't order it until I removed old glass so wasn't waisting money if I broke it. I did practice on 2 junk phones first. Only one of the test screens worked before and it still worked after. YouTube videos is what I followed.

This. It's not worth the extra $400 for the 6P just for a bit more dev love.

Would you care to share your links in what you did?
If better camera and finger print sensor and more comfortable phone in hand is whats important to you i would dive in. I buy 3 phones a year so i can understand you wanting to upgrade even if its not that big of an upgrade . But at this point there won't be any giant leaps from year to year .

Here is a link to glass and t3 torque screwdriver. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=361337407585&alt=web
I got all the parts on ebay. Used the cheapest I could find from us sellers. You need a loca glu. I used a uv flashlight I got on eBay to cure the glue. Have to put it on all parts of glass for about 30 seconds each spot.
Here is the link to the wire I used
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=111281188717&alt=web
I drilled 2 holes in a 2x10 block of wood about 8" apart and put the wire holding sticks in the holes. Watch YouTube videos to see how to take phone apart
It worked pretty good for me. I ended up with 2 small air bubbles under the glass and glass is slightly lifted on one side. Cannot notice once in cheap tpu case.
I used a locktite glue that takes 24hrs to cure to glue screen back to bezel. Cleaned with close pins while curing. Tried double sided tape didn't hold, krazy glue dried to hard didn't hold screen to bezel. I think all my trial and error and scraping and reglueing the bezel is why it is lifted.
Sorry took so long to reply. Just glued the screen on 2 days ago.
And I am in no way saying this is easy just that it was no where near as hard as I thought it would be. You could easily completely break screen trying this
Update. Screen works fine but... The locktite worked the best but is coming undone again. I believe I may have had the loca glu to thick. And made the screen thicker in doing so. And when I put it together it is pressing out. Am thinking of reseperating and reglueing. Any advice is welcomed
