[Q] Automatic heart rate monitoring? - LG G Watch R

Does anyone know of any app that will automatically run the heart rate monitor at predefined intervals? It's rather disappointing having a heart rate monitor when you have to continually tell it to take a measurement. I'd love to have an app that automatically monitors my heart rate (and also my steps), so that I can build up a record.
Is anyone aware of a way of doing this? Many thanks.

Would assume this would be similar to the feature on the 360. I would also be keen on something like this.

HeartSync
Can probably do what you are looking for.

That looks very hopeful, many thanks indeed. I'll install and play!

Thanks for the shout-out. I'm the dev for HeartSync (and Amplify).
HeartSync is definitely a work in progress. I have a lot of plans for it. Right now, here's how it works:
1) Automatic mode. You set the frequency to whatever you want, and HeartSync will try to measure your heart rate that often. You can see when the next check time is in the phone app. When it's time, Heart Sync will try to get your heart rate, then upload it to google fit. If it can't get your heart rate within 60 seconds, it gives up. If you set it to 5 minutes, you'll get some battery drain. I prefer 30 minutes because the battery life is really good, and you get a good spread of heart rates in Google Fit charts.
2) Workout mode. You open the app on the watch, and tap the heart. Heart Sync will now continuously monitor your heart rate, even after the screen turns off. You also get a card notification on the watch during this time reminding you that heartsync is running in the background. This will update your heartrate continuously to Google Fit. To turn workout mode off, open the app again on the watch, and tap the heart again. The battery will last about 3-4 hours in this mode.
After any kind of measurement, you should be able to open Google Fit on your phone and refresh it. Then you can click "See Charts", "Add Chart", and add your heart rate chart.
I'm keeping HeartSync in stealth mode a little bit for now. I want to get a few more features in before I create an app thread for it here
Thanks,
Ryan

Hi Ryan,
Many thanks indeed for taking the trouble to outline the app. I've downloaded, donated, and set to auto heart rate every 30 mins. The app does exactly what I was looking for, so thanks again.
Just a quick question, if I may: I'm new to Google Fit, it seems incredibly minimalist, even by Google standards! Once I've used HearttRate for a while, how do I access my heart rate data from Fit?
Cheers,
Aidan

You need to view charts, then add the heart rate chart. Im working on custom charts based on the data from fit, as well.

Under Menu/Add activity I can add many things, from Aerobics to Zumba, but there's no mention of heart rate. I can't find any other options to add anything...?

It's not in the menu for some reason. You need to open the charts. Online, click the middle of the step circle. On the phone, scroll down to "view graphs".
On my phone. Please excuse brevity and typos.

Got it! Many thanks mate. It's a shame it seems I have to re-open it every time. Do you know if there's any way to have it permanently there with (or instead of) steps?

I don't think there is. No worries, though. The next version of HeartSync will have a chart embedded in the app

Thanks again. I tell you what would be an awesome feature if you could add it to a future release: Sleeping hours during which auto does not take measurements. I take my watch off at night, but of course the app goes on taking measurements even so.

It shouldn't take measurements if it's on the charger. Or do you have it off your wrist, but not charging at night?

Just purchased HeartSync and it looks great! Unlocked the more frequent automatic updates.
Just checking - does the app continuously monitor or does it monitor based on the update frequency (or does the update frequency refer to the frequency with which the app updates to google fit)? Thanks!

It does both!
If you setup automatic updates, it will check your heart rate and update google fit on that frequency.
If you launch HeartSync on the watch and tap the heart icon, it will continuously monitor your heart rate and upload to Fit in realtime (workout mode). It will stay in workout mode until you turn it off by tapping the heart again.
Thanks,
Ryan

Hi, first of all thanks for your app.
I have seen the chart in your app but it does not show the date anywhere so I'ts very difficult to know when is each dot.
If you include the date in the chart and add pin in/out zoom to the chart (so I can view more detailed information about a specific hour on a specific day) I will purchase your app.
Best regards

Thanks - When I run it from the watch it won't start. The watch app reports "Heart Sync Not Measuring". In the Android Wear app, should your app be set to be the default heart rate app?
EDIT: I am a moron - I didn't realize that I needed to tap on the heart on the watch. lol
So if I start it and just keep it running in the background, it will log continuously (but likely draw lots of battery power so is suitable for only during workouts) correct? Does having it as the default heart rate app in Android Wear make any difference to functionality/interoperability? Thanks in advance for the replies!

Hi again Ryan - got it working fine but tapping it again to turn continuous monitoring off isn't working. I have had to hold down on the monitoring page and swipe right but it is still running in the background. Thoughts?

Same problem here. Monitoring would not stop, when I tap the heart.

This is a bug. I'm working on an update now. Still early days of the app's development, but it's going to get a LOT better in the next few days.
Thanks for your patience!

Pebble Apps Wanted

Thought I would start a thread for Apps Wanted, hoping some enterprising devs might see the list and pick some to try. Here is what I am thinking:
- Respond with App Name in the subject to this post
- Provide as much detail as possible here to provide a baseline of what you are looking for
- Add info such as any help you may be able to provide, or if you are willing to offer up cash or other incentives
- When/if there is an app to test you can provide a link
I will make sure to provide a list here of all of app requests so that we have an index file for reference:
- Pebble Smart Start: An app that will allow the user to start their vehicle remotely
- Pebble GeoCache: An app that provides simple geo-cache readout on the Pebble (Lat/Lon)

Love the apps that are already there for navigation and sports links, but would love a basic GPS readout app that shows the following data:
Latitude
Longitude
Altitude

How about Google Glass App?
Not really a coder myself, but there was a Dailer app, which allowed users to search and call contacts by using T9 typing (with the 3 buttons on the right). I wonder if this would be possible with sending sms and typing with T9( we know Glance allows pre-set messages = so sending messages is possible)
Just a little something i wish was out there.

..or maybe it would just let you pick a top 5 or top 10 numbers to dial? then should be easier to scroll the list and pick the one you want to call
You could check my app - A countdown timer. Also, if anyone knows coding and wants to help me, PM me as i dont have a pebble

A great app would be to be able to have your pebble turn off at scheduled times. May be harder to get it to turn on but at least this would save battery.

Can start/pause/stop MyTracks recording
Shows current time (in "status bar", top of the screen, small), current speed (big), travelled distance (like bike computer)

if possible, longpress up/down could fire watchapp (PebbleDialer)

I have a few ideas for how you can do this...
1. Canvas app - create a calendar on google calendars with just their birthdays. On Canvas, create a watch face with a field that pulls data from a calendar and configure it to only pull from the birthday calendar.
2. Tasker and pebble notifier - with pebble notifier, you can send tasker notifications to your watch. With tasker, you can program it to notify you on certain days which are your friends' birthdays.
Thoughts?

Oi! Where's your phone?
Having lost phones in the past an app to vibrate the pebble if the BT connection drops for longer than a minute (maybe the duration could be configurable) would be useful.
Would probably need alarm style snooze and dismiss options so you could snooze it if you're out of range momentarily and dismiss it until the next reconnect if your phone battery has died or similar.
Something like this was the first thing I thought of when I saw the pebble so I was surprised to not find one already, I've seen a few phone apps doing the reverse and bleeping the phone when out of range but that doesn't help me realise my phone is missing it just annoys the thief into turning off the phone.
I'm not a coder beyond 10 print hello 20 goto 10 but if anyone else thinks something like this would be useful I'd happily beta test.
Thanks

I'd like a better stopwatch/alarm app.. Also a contact app that works better than the current one with the 3 button interface. I'd like to scroll by groups of letters, like top button is a to k, middle is l to s etc.. And then scroll through those letters.
I know this is a long shot, but having a torque plugin would be cool to show 2 or 3 preset dials like engine temp and maf values cause when I'm working on my Audi I like to monitor certain things but don't want to get my phone all greasy.

Yes, this exactly. I got my pebble a few days ago and I've been looking for something like this. There are already apps to ring the phone from the watch and even a notification on your phone if your watch gets disconnected but I would very much like the watch to vibrate if it gets disconnected instead of the phone

Top 5 uses for your Galaxy Gear

Hi, proud owner of the gear for like 2 days, finding my uses a bit limited so far, so I thought i would list mine, if you list yours! Maybe we can get ideas from each other of how to best use this awesome piece of tech:
1. Notifications (the only one that isn't great is Touchdown for exchange, does normal Samsung exchange email work better - ie show a preview of the email?
2. The time: yup, it is a watch, after all
3. Calendar: : Keeping tabs on what my next meeting is
4. Camera:; For quick snaps to remind me of things, it's ideal
5. Phone:: For seeing who's calling, and rejecting their call usually
Feel like I should start using the pedometer, but i go to the gym every day, and don't walk alot. And definitely feel like there are other uses for this that haven't been thought of/ apps haven't come out yet. I haven't gone the custom ROM route, but I have updated to MK7.
A
1. To look like a geek
2. Notifications
3. Watch
4 Making short calls to find other peoples phones.
5. Checking current weather conditions
1 - time
2 - meeting events
3 - pedometer (hooked into s health)
4 - camera
5 - notificaations
6 - gaming! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fAQ3xQnaW18&feature=c4-overview&list=UUZAweAIkRllQ7PjR9SfnNyg
7 - news (using zite)
8 - quick photo notes to Evernote
1. geek
2. girl magnet
3. phone/text
4. watch
5. wrist top flashlight like on the old centurions cartoon.
1. Time
2. Hacking
Not sure if the order is right
1: Notifications. Knowing who emailed me or texted me without picking up my phone is huge.
2: Music control. It works great with the stock music app, and even shows album art on the watch. I can be on the treadmill with my BT headphones and the phone completely hidden away and change songs and volume.
3: Quick pictures.
4: Weather updates.
5: Pedometer.
so what kind of things can you do with real apps, after installing the null rom? i'm really tempted to pick one up if there are any black friday deals
I really wish the #1 feature of the Gear was to tell time. But I find it so frustrating when glancing at my wrist to check the time all I see is a blank screen! C'mon! The wrist flick thing works ok if your hands are free. But at work my hands are always working/holding on something, and flicking of the wrist is not an option. Very hard to consider the Gear a true watch if I can never get it to tell me the time.
1. Notifications
2. Kill/waste time loading ROMs and customizing watch faces
3. Camera
4. Attract nearby geeks within a 25ft radius
5. Time
definitely this would come in handy when weightlifting in the gym

Agree, and even when I flick my wrist it shows up only 75% of the time... needs to be either more sensitive or always-on (it has an AMOLED screen that shouldn't burn too much battery?)

YEP! I was able to run Big Digital Clock app and have it running with the display always-on, but the battery on the Gear is tiny, so it does drain it quickly. Also, there is an issue with screen burn-in with the clock always on. Overall, I still wear the Gear over my other watches for the geek factor.. pretty cool to have a tablet on ur wrist that lets u read ur notifications. I'm coming from the original Sony Smart Watch on my PPC, which was a watch #1, then notifier #2.
My List
1. New geek toy to play with
2. Reading notifications while in meetings etc.
3. Taking calls while my hands are full.
4. Snoozing my alarm in the morning so I don't need to roll over and find my phone.
5. Telling the time.
6.Taking quick snaps.
7. Controlling my music for my Bluetooth headphones.
8. Using the wine scanning app

Received mine today, some negative points so far....

Ok sorry to sound a percy pessimist but here are some little gripes so far.. I'm totally understanding that its still early days yet and software may well be improved over time and also I may well be being dim and not knowing where some settings are etc. If so then please by all means let me know!
* Cradle/dock VERY awkward to attach.
* Does nots seem to have the cool "bypass phone lockscreen if watch is attached" feature which was demo'd in I/O.
* Doesn't seem to be a way to open apps or do anything on the watch if you are not in a position to talk. (other than the list of "example" searches you can see if you don't talk to the watch quick enough.
* I don't seem to be getting vibration notifications
* doesn't seem to be a way of using your own photos for the photos watch face
* doesn't seem to be a way of editing the call reject text messages
* strap is very awkward to put on and for the heart rate monitor you need to have it on pretty tight which is tricky to do one handed with the kind of clasp it has.
* **the movement to wake the watch is a bit hit or miss. it doesnt seem to be just a matter of flicking the wrist or moving up to face.** (this is beginning to be a problem. it is pretty random if it wants to wake up from movement or not. cant work out if it dependant on which watchface or not). i reallllllllllly don't want to have to touch the watch to see notifications etc.
* to even entertain viewing it outside, you have to manually crank the brightness up to max else it is pretty much unreadable. and thats in the UK sunshine!!!
other than that, it seems to be a nice watch.
i feel like i just wasted 180 quid

The lockscreeen unlock feature relies on Android L, not the watch.
The strap is replaceable. I have 2 Silicone ones from Amazon ready to go.
And this is Google Now on your wrist. Yes it's first generation and has plenty to improve upon. But it's essentially meant to be Google Now on your wrist.
Just be happy you got yours! Haha. I'm refreshing the UPS page like a mad man (had it delivered to work.... But I received the day off. Hahaha)
STILL way way better than that Tiezen BS Samsung tried out... Be positive!!
(Keep in mind I have a gear 1 and love it)
Yep, cradle is annoying
Vibrate is very slight I hardly ever notice it
All apps need to support wear before they can be interacted with (contacts, emails, messages etc if using a non google product)
Strap clasp doesn't feel very secure
love how light it is
has google now integration which so far has been hit and miss 70/30
always on face is cool (except still emits light in dark rooms)

yeah i had a feeling it might be a L feature. although its a bit annoying as i had the same feature with my Pebble using an app called Pebble Locker which basically bypassed the requirement for entering a pin etc if the watch was connected to the phone. So its defintely possible without L. hopefully someone will make a quick little app to do that
I will be ordering a metal braclet style strap sometime soon, like i had on my pebble. much more comfortable.

Agreed. App will be out soon. I already have 5 exclusive Wear apps ready & waiting. Hahha.
I wish they gave us the nicer strap from Gear 2. Not this BS from Gear Fit... Oh well.
This is a starter watch... Moto 360 & after will only get better & better. As will the software. LOVE that Google is keeping control.
Coming from Gear Neo; initial observations:
1. Watch has more metal and feels more premium
2. Watch strap is larger, will accommodate larger wrists but the clasp is junk compared to the neos.
3. OS is a little overwhelming right now, which I actually think is good. After 30 minutes, I am still cant do much- Iam not concerned with "watch cant do" xxx yet.
4. I have had 2 OS updates in the first hr.
5. Gear Manager seems to be a little more straight forward than Wear Manager but it is too new to make a final call on that
6. Watch is fast! "Okay google, what is the capital of NY?" is recognized and answered immediately.
7. Interface is smooth as silk
I use skiplock to bypass the lock screen. Works with WiFi networks and Bluetooth devices

Here's my opinions after receiving the watch today. See if you have the same thoughts, thefunkygibbon:
I was quite pleased that it is not really big
the set up process was easy enough but took quite a while - I think mainy due to downlaoding a firmware udate
there's quite a learning curve in using this new OS
the watch is a bit useless at the moment because it is constantly disconnecting so it is just a simple watch - I need to find out how to correct this
I noticed the battery on my phone goes down fast when the watch is connected.
It really sucks that there is no auto brightness
the notifications work really well and look great with the picture backgrounds

Feels to me like we are missing a launcher. Voice control is great, but there are times it just won't work and the method above is cumbersome.
Any other negative points? I want to buy a gear live soon...but I rather hear the reviews first. I'm guessing the problems listed all here are going to be on the LG G watch and the Moto 360 since most of the complaints seem to be Android wear related.
Be careful w attaching or taking off charging cradle. Reports show breaking off or breaking piece off phone. Thought mine coming in today but, scheduled for tomorrow.

Just a couple quick notes:
- I noticed that I can somewhat bypass the lockscreen. I'm currently on 4.4.4. (S4 - KangaKat) When I have the watch open the app on my phone or perform an action on the phone, I can simply press the home button (or side power button) and I do not have to swipe my pattern.
- Vibration notifications SHOULD be working. There were two system updates that were done when I first connected the watch. Perhaps that's the issue?
- I am able to see that I have a notification without turning on the watch. When I swipe it up, I get more details, which I can then swipe away, so that the next notification with show on the screen. I think this is just a matter of managing the notifications and making sure that you are top of them. Swiping them away & handling them as they come in.
- Yes, outside sucks. Today is pure sunlight, I was having trouble seeing it with a setting of 3. I was able to view it better when I put my hand over it. Not much different from trying to look at portions of my phone's screen in the outdoors with a similar brightness.
All in all, I'm pretty satisfied and I understand that this is first gen. I am hoping that through some proper feedback to google / developers, we start to see some software updates & applications developed that further the watch's capabilities. For now, though the notifications are great....although I wish I could not have it send work emails to the watch. The thing vibrates non-stop.

The thing vibrates non-stop.

can't you blacklist apps? or do you use the same app for work and personal email?

I have not seen yet that you can blacklist apps. Since it uses native notifications, the only way I can see to prevent this would be to disable email notifications altogether Not something I want to do. I will either just have to have the notification sit there and disappear as I check my emails / dismiss the notification. Hopefully, there are some changes in the future on this.

You are correct. I missed that completely. I have muted my email application, let's hope tomorrow is a little more quiet. Thanks for pointing that out!

What do you use your watch for?

Other then the obvious time.
I like mine, but debating taking it back because in not using it as much as expected. Maybe i just don't have enough uses for it. Hence this thread
I use mine for notifications whilst at work so I'm not constantly getting my phone out.
Use it for music using Bluetooth ear phones when I'm out running or in the gym.
Controlling music playing from My phone so i can leave my phone plugged in.
Controlling my phones settings easily, again without getting the phone out.
Ticking off the shopping list as im getting dragged around tescos with the misses.
Use the camera app quite a bit too have a look in hard to reach areas when working on my car or fixing generators at work, also handy when playing hide n seek with my kids.
Quick text messages and replys.
Starting and stopping My Tracks easily.
And lastly just enjoy geeking out with it.
When working out, I use the heart rate tracker with Endomondo. For real time heart rate tracking the entire workout. This helps give a better idea of how many calories were burned. It works best during treadmill walking, not as well when weightlifting. But even what it does during weightlifting is better than nothing.
Shopping list as was mentioned already.
Cooking: I use "My Cookbook" app. To view recipes on my watch while cooking. This is so much easier, than trying to pull out the phone, book or tablet, to read a recipe while in the act of cooking. It keeps the hands free for the actual cooking.
Weather: I use the "Bright Weather" app. Which keeps a persistent weather card on my watch. So anytime I want a quick view of the the weather I can pull up that card right away.
Easy reading and replying to text. I use the "WearResponses" app, to easily reply to text messages. It's also easy to create and send a message via voice.
Watch faces, wow there are so many. I'm very much a watch face junkie .
Calendar: I always have the calendar card open for easy lookup of my daily schedule.
Step Counting: Aside from tracking steps during my workouts. Google Fit tracks steps all day. So I can see when I'm getting a good number of steps in a day overall.
Navigation: When using Google Maps, I can see directions on the watch while walking.
Calculator: I use the "Multi Calculator" app, to be able to use a calculator right on my phone.
Sleep: (Last but certainly not least.) I use the "Sleep As Android" app. To track my sleep patters, pause tracking when I get up in the middle of the night momentarily, to stop sleep tracking when I wake up and even dismiss alarms.
There's more, but that's the regular everyday stuff ,

I have to add answering the phone. It's so nice to get caller ID on the watch. No need to pull out the phone when I get a call. I can look at the watch and decide if I want to send the call to voicemail or answer. There have been times I would have never taken any action on a call. Because my hands were not in a position to pull out the phone. But I was able to send to voicemail, because I could at least get one finger to my watch .

@phil gpx. How are you taking pics with the watch? Also what app do you find best for the shopping lists on the watch? Keep?
@Darnell_Chat_TN. How is the heart rate tracker with Endomondo? Google fit sucks at it as I get a BPM after a run at 70. There's no way.
How do you like my cookbook?
Edit: I just did a search for some of those apps: which cookbook app? There were 2. And, which endomondo app? Pro or basic?
Thanks guys. I just got this watch a few weeks ago. Played with the basics myself, but I know it can do more for me.
Sorry for the off topic questions
Definitely more then I'm using it for.
I wish i could get it to work with my fitness pal

For camera, have a look at the "ZenWatch Remote Camera" app. It will work with any Android Wear device.
Heart rate tracking with Endomondo is good. It's not always perfect, but for an hour walk/run, it does give a good overall picture of BPM average and high. It's best to just allow the arm to swing normally during the activity. Trying to keep holding your arm up to look at the watch I have found messes the reading up and gives low numbers.
The watch only works with the free version of Endomodo, but if you want extra features you have to get the paid version. And then, the free version will work with the watch, plus have all the paid features too. So you'll have 2 apps if you get both, but only use the free version, that will also have the paid features after you buy the paid app .
I'm using "My Cookbook (Recipe Manager)", by Maadinfo Services. It's very nice, since I can put in recipes however I like them and then see it on my watch. The last viewed in the phone app will show on the watch.

Endomodo is "supposed" to automatically feed data to MyFitnessPal. But I have never been able to get that to work. So I always have to enter the data into MyFitnessPal manually .

As mentioned above or camera for wear or camera remote etc as there are many on the play store.
The shopping list is called Bring. You can have multiple people on the list and you get a alert when someone updates the list.

I just tried the ZenWatch Remote Camera app with the LG G Watch R and it basically **** the bed told me in no uncertain terms it only supports the ZenWatch. Too bad, it looks like a neat app.

When starting it on phone it has a popup saying that it could not pair with watch and asking if I still want to continue using it with the option of "yes" or "no thanks". Absolutely nothing happens on the watch. Maybe you have an older version? Either way thank you for trying to help.

General [CANADA] Galaxy S21 Ultra discussions, sw updates, everything related to the SM-G998W

I thought we should have a thread dedicated to Canadian users, our model is different enough from the US one (U) to warrant a separate section.
For starters, I haven't seen any mention of the May patch AUDA on any of the carrier forums (Telus, Fido, Rogers, etc) nor anything on the Samsung website.
I got my phone directly Samsung, so I kind of expected faster updates, in line with the rest of the world.
We usually get it around the 10th of the month, for March it was on the same date as Fido's schedule. I bought it from Samsung Canada too
To bad here in Canada the phone was released with March update. Hopefully bootloader unlock gets updated.
Must have fps and doze app for S21 series phones with adaptive 120hz. Has option for 96hz max and 48hz minimum, etc.
[App]Galaxy Max Hz (Refresh Rate Mods, Screen-off Mods, QS Tiles, Tasker Support and More)
About this app: Refresh Rate Mods Change default refresh rates -Easily change the overall refresh rate settings of devices supporting multiple refresh rates. -Set supported mid refresh rates as the maximum refresh rate limit for battery...

Here's a nice lil screen on time with S21 Ultra set to adaptive 96hz max and 60hz minimum with max doze mode. Also power saving mode with limit cpu speed to 70% along with turn off 5G. I will get even more screen on time as the phone learns usage patterns, etc. Screen brightness set to auto just to clarify.

Yup, using it since I discovered the app...but for me, I had to downgrade back to 7.0 - 7.10 doesn't keep the refresh rate when in power save mode properly.
I reported in the app thread, maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Try enabling the refresh rate monitor in your status bar. I always have it on, maybe why the latest works for me properly. Maybe the monitor keeps process running as apposed to being killed.
Arnova8g2 Gcam
BTW....I think everyone should give the Arnova8g2 GCam a try, it works wonders with zoom, especially 10x.

Hmmm...maybe, good idea.
I use the screen refresh rate display option from developer mode...didn't like the notification one, but you are right, Android gets aggressive with apps if they don't have a notification.
PSA : Bixby "Routine +" has been a added to Good Lock.
I'm still unclear on who's providing the updates if I bought the phone from Samsung directly. I would assume Samsung, NOT the carrier. Right?
Ok, enough posts for one day, I swear I'm not trying boost my karma

I got the April update on April 14. While I purchased my phone from Amazon, I have a Bell SIM in it and, I may be wrong, but I believe Bell has to vet updates before they are available for phones registered with them.

Yes...and the results are quite remarkable in my case. Definitely cleaner shots.
PSA: I pinged Samsung Canada and they could not offer a date for pushing the May update...go figure.
That explains why no carrier has any date either.
I'm not anxious to get it, I would rather wait and see if it breaks any my current tweaks (esp Galaxy Max hz, the Galaxy Labs stuff I sideloaded and most importantly, GCam)
Telus will update in May 18th
It's weird because I can not use the gcam that someone upload in this thread. Installed it successfully but it doesn't open

You may have to manually enable file permission. Sometimes you get 3 options and it defaults to the middle which is not full file access.
