Fix for Google Play Movie playback issues w/ Nook HD plus and cm-11? - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I installed cm-11-20141218 on my Nook HD plus. It's my first root. Everything went smoothly.... except in Google play movies it says 'Playback isn't supported on this device' when trying to stream my movies and shows (same issue in Disney Movies). All other Google apps appear to be working fine. However, I can download and watch or cast and watch, but both options produce very low quality images (I do have the HD download option set). Normally the Nook HD plus has great video playback quality. Ironically I can now watch 1080p videos in YouTube (but not purchased videos).
I was hoping that someone might have a simple fix.... thanks.

I don't watch videos there, but I suspect they don't work on rooted devices, so you need an app that hides your root status. I don't know exact name, you can search on Google.

New HD7 User From Android

I just picked up this phone and my thoughts are mediocre so far. But I have one issue that I cannot seem to fix. On my android, I would have the option on either Youtube.com, or the Youtube app, to choose to watch the video in HD. I dont see that option for my phone now, am i missing something? It sucks to have a 4.3" screen but with jumbled video.
Thanks.
The stock youtube app isn't that great. There is another one you can grab in the marketplace that is better.
As for watching it in a browser, it was likely omitted to avoid having to keep up with flash updates.

But what about for HD viewing? I added a video to my phone that plays crystal clear...but i want to stream HD if the video specifies HD.
Did you download the YouTube app from HTC Hub? It can play HQ video.

HD Videos won't play on YouTube!

Guys,
So I recently, successfully, followed the [ROM][CM7] [v1.3] Size-agnostic SD Card image and CM7 installer for SD Cards thread to use CM7 on an SD Card on my Nook Color 1.4.2. Everything worked out flawlessly and everything seems to be working just fine.
I have the Original Nook OS running via Internal Memory (If I boot without SD Card); and CM7 running via SD Card.
One issue that i've run into is that my YouTube is not playing HD Videos. If I try to play any HD Video, I get the error..
"There was a problem playing this video.
Please touch to retry".
If I click the "HD" button on top-right corner to disable HD, the video starts playing just fine in SD Quality. All SD Videos play just fine.
I have not been able to play any HD video at all on YouTube.
The YouTube I'm talking about is the YouTube App available on the Google Play Store.
Is it just me or do HD Videos not play on the Nook Color via YouTube?
Thanks!!
Unfortunately it depends on the format the hd is encoded to... it is hit and miss.
One thing that MAY help is to install MX player and the codec pack for it.

Thanks for replying Dizzy.
I installed MX Player and it's codecs; I have to say that my actual MP4/MKV files are actually running pretty smooth & nicely in this player .... however, YouTube HD Videos still won't work.
I think what bothers me is that it's not appearing as a "hit and miss" with me; it's appearing as a total "miss" with me and I want to make sure it's not just me. Over the last couple of days I must have tried something like 30 ~ 40 HD Clips - absolutely none of them work - each gives the same message.
Could it be something else in my setup?
Thanks.

I think the hit and miss is HQ work, but HD do not.

Ok - so basically HD Videos do not work on YouTube on the NC at all; that is fine, I think I just primarily wanted to make sure it's not just me or my setup. I know "HD" isn't really conducive on the NC anyways since it's max resolution is 854 X 480 ... it's not even 720p.
Thanks for clarifying.
Is there any way to modify the YouTube apk so that it won't play in HD? It's been getting annoying how it keeps trying to play in HD and just fails.

I'd like to know this as well.
Try the apk in the following link to play HQ youtube clips
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282736
Only problem is that Google play detects this as an old version and will try and update. You could always break the market link with Titanium Backup or similar program

Actually the resolution is 1024x600.
A bit better than the lower res 854 x 480.

Try starting youtube app...
go menu... Settings... if High quality on mobile is checked... uncheck it... if it is unchecked... check it.
Mine is checked...
NOTICE: with it checked or unchecked... if you select a HD video... it will ALWAYS initialize in HD mode and you have to tap on the HD logo top right of video to avoid the error message.

I'm Running ICS and the only option in the Settings is to Disable HD over 3G, which the Nook doesn't have. Clicking the HD button disables HD playback for a Playlist but as soon as you leave the Playlist it defaults to HD again. Also HQ is also disabled if you Disable HD in the App. What I need is a patch for the Youtube app so that it thinks my Nook isn't HD capable as it's supposed to.

This was already suggested in this thread, but you can install an older version of YouTube that does not detect you are running in HD and it will play HD videos in HQ. They are decent quality and do not crash. But there is no tablet interface either. To keep play store from updating or bugging you, uncheck automatic updating for YouTube and tell it to not notify you of updates. Get the older version here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17983409
It is version 2.1.6

I already know about that but I updated to CM9 to get the new ICS interfaces. I'd rather suffer the HD presses(Which are less difficult in the latest UI overhaul from Google) then Downgrade. I'm just expressing that I'd be interested if anybody wanted to try and patch it. I have nowhere near the coding skills to create a patch myself(I'm standing on Earth while the Skills are on Neptune).

Chromecast - anyone working on a way to play local videos?

Hey guys, I wanted to see who all here has picked up a chrome cast and what your thoughts are on it so far?
I really dig it, quick connection and ability to play things with no noticeable degradation or lag. And with HBO Go and Hulu Plus both coming soon it is going to be really nice.
One issue though that I have found is that the previous version of Google Play Movies allowed you to play locally stored videos on your device through the app. With the update to work with Chromecast this option is removed even when trying to do it on your device only so you have to use an external app such as the gallery or MX player etc.
Any word or people working on creating a cracked version of google movies or a work around to allow other apps to chromecast?

Koush has wrote a chromecast app just for that actually but due to he developer agreement with chromecast he cannot release the apk.

That is pretty slick and works for home made videos (although obviously he isn't releasing it at the moment) but as is it also wouldn't solve the problem of being able to fling other movies you have to the TV.
IE I own a digital copy of Ironman and have it on my tablet, before the google movie app would play it internally. With the update to enable chromecast it no longer shows up to even be played on the phone through the app, let alone fling it to the TV.

Does Chromecast play back Google Play movies in HD or SD?

Was thinking about picking up some sale movies from the Google Play store now that we have the ability to show on the big screen via Chromecast. In the store, it says that HD is available for Android devices, and SD is available for the web. Does anyone know what format Chromecast will play back? Thanks

YouTube forces the highest quality possible if you cast from a phone, however, through the chrome browser on a desktop you can adjust the quality. I imagine it works the same way. Netflix pushes HD if available.

Google Play Movies plays in HD when cast from a Android device. I've never tried casting it from the web.
playback messages
When I use Youtube to send a playlist of trailers to my "TV" (it's actually a front projector), I get an onscreen message at the head of every trailer that contains a Youtube logo, the name of the trailer as well as download count info. I really don't want this extraneous info appearing on the screen at all. Don't know if it's being generated by the app or by the Chromecast hardware. Can anyone guess as to how this crap can be turned off. Believe it or not, this "feature" is a deal breaker for me. I'm using this in a home theater ... and I want to have as close to a cinema experience as is possible. I just want the trailers to play one after another like they do in a theater ... with out all the notices..

There's no way to change this yet at all. Maybe after Google releases the sdk but doubtful this will be something they will allow us to change...I understand what you're trying to do but a "deal breaker" really?

That was my concern too. Needless to say it was hd. I got this tv show free when i got my chromecast. (just appeared in my play movies app.

The picture quality on my chromecast was just awesome. My tv stayed at 1080p. I like the chromecast because i can buy movies and tv shows and bill them to my phone. until now i would hookup my laptop via hdmi but it was just 420p.
I think you'll be happy.

Issues with ChromeCast on a Moto X with 5.0

Hi All,
Brought a chromecast about 2 weeks ago to watch films off a site called showbox. When connecting my moto x 2nd gen to my chromecast the image quality is really poor.... really really poor! The playback is horrid and even swiping screens there is a huge delay. I've tried other apps such like iplayer, youtube etc and they are just as bad.
I couldnt manage to get the "cast screen" option on quick settings to find my device so have had to install app and run that way.
Chromecast does work fine when casting from IOS device's in household.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Darren
Screen casting in my experience is rough no matter the device.
YouTube should be of good quality because the streaming occurs via the Chromecast and not your phone, so I am not sure what is wrong there.

Sounds like you are screen mirroring everything? That's not a good way to do things. Screen mirroring is a last resort. Any app that is Chromecast compatible use it's inbuilt cast option. The Chromecast will then deal directly with loading a receiver app and getting a good quality stream
For showbox...? Not sure, but if you can open and play the videos in Android Chrome you can direct cast from Chrome. Alternatively if you can copy the stream url use LocalCast or BubbleUPNP to cast from the steam url.
My Moto G 1st-gen is about to get updated to Android 5, so I was wondering if that would enable screen casting to the Chromecast. If it works on the Moto X, I guess it will. But it doesn't sound like anybody is too thrilled with the performance.
In any case, a much better solution for casting from any web streaming app is to see if it has the option to output to "Other" video player. You can choose something like LocalCast or Avia and cast it properly to the Chromecast. That works for the app the OP mentioned, which BTW is not supposed to be discussed here on xda, so keep the discussion generic if you don't want the thread to be locked.

Screen casting (from the Chromecast App) works on my 1st Gen Moto G on 4.4.4. I use it a lot to cast photo slideshows with music (something that is still not available on a cast enabled app....why???). Performance is fine for that use case. Noticeable decline in image quality if I make it an animated gif slideshow with music. To be fair I'm also streaming the music/pics to the phone in the first place which is putting additional overhead on the wifi.
Thanks! I did not even notice that the Cast Screen feature had been added to the Chromecast app for my Moto G on Android 4.4.4. It works reasonably well for me even though it says "not optimized". Looks like it came with Chromecast app version 1.9.6 in early December.
I guess I didn't notice when this capability was added because I normally use the Chromecast with my tablet that's on an older version of Android, and the Cast Screen function does not appear on the Chromecast menu there. I'm surprised I didn't see it mentioned more prominently in this forum. I just took a quick look back, and aside from a brief post ending the previous "Experimental" screen casting thread, it doesn't seem like there were any threads about it.
