[Q] Tethering/Hotspot - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

okay, so I've scoured the interwebs and the forums and have found absolutely nothing on this subject. Coming from the one max, this was a day one mod/hack, so I'm surprised to not see it done at all on the nexus. Now I've already done the build.prop edits and even found one thing on apn edits, but nothing worked. So does anyone know how to get this working? Or can possibly point me in the right direction

Search sqlite.

Is there a more permanent solution to enable unlimited tethering if you already have unlimited data? All k could find where work grounds for 4.4 kitkat not lollipop. I added in the provision to my build prop however I want to use my phone as a hotspot when I go on trips to avoid using public WiFi for my laptop

This works on nexus 5 and 6

So it in fact allows unlimited tethering on T-Mobile? Do you have to set it every time you reboot or is it a set ams forget kind of edit.

This works, I actually found out after more digging, that and the build prop edit work like a charm, now my nexus is complete!!!

There is a good thread on this already. I just used it a couple nights ago to add the hack on my N6.

Where can you check your tethering usage on T-Mobiles site? I only see data used out of unlimited. I literally just switched last night from the death star so its all new to me. I've already used 3.5gb of LTE in less than 24 hours

I don't believe there is a separate amount for tethering it's just all grouped as data usage if you don't pay for the Hotspot feature

Even if you have unlimited, you can "only" tether 5gb. That's why I was asking about making the tethering unlimited. I use my laptop at my school and our universities WiFi is terrible.

Withthe sqlite mod it does not count toward your tethering data, only unlimited data.

Great! I did the mod using the editor, does it stick with a ROM flash or do I need to add it in every time?

[Q] Droid 4 Tether Hack

I wondering if the Tether Hack using the RadioComm will work on the Droid4. I tried it, but could not get the app to detect the phone.
Also I enabled Verizon's Tether, and it seems to be giving me tether at no extra cost, I'm not sure, but the message when I activated it said, as long as you have a data play $29.95 or greater. Other wise you had to upgrade planes. Well I had the unlimited data plane so I continued with the set up, then when to Verizon to check my bill, and I don't see any additional cost as of yet. So I'm curious, is version charging to use Tether ?
Yahya
When I looked into it, the cost was supposed to be $24/mo for tethering. I just rooted mine and installed the Wifi Tether 3.1 beta 11 apk and it works fine so I would not chance attempting to use Verizon's app just because it seems likely that even if you don't get charged right off the bat, they might get wise and decide to charge you in the future.

"That behavior it does is normal. The stock app is just a modified version of the aosp built in tethering mechanism. So when AWT sets the prop that tells the system that tethering is on the stock app gets triggered. Even cm7 on thrill does this."

Yeah, the mobile hotspot pops up for everyone (but not always which is odd)... it will not affect your bill because VZW can't say anything if you're not using their app.
The settings that I'm using on 3.1 beta11 are as follows:
Device - Motorola Razr
Setup - Auto
Not using encryption and everything else is however it comes set.
Part of your problem is probably that you're using an older beta. Here's the link for the one I'm using (just add the Http:// because I haven't posted enough to link):
code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wifi_tether_v3_1-beta11.apk&can=2&q=
Wifi Tether 3.1 here. First thing installed post-root. Working beautifully.
Using the built in tether with the entitlement_check hack from bionic, working great
so is it free or what
My wife has the Droid 4 and I love the 4g service (up to 20mbps in my area). We use the wifi tether for our xoom. So if we use the vzw stock wifi tether app we will be charged? And if I use a 3rd party app like fox fi for instance it will b free of charge? Or can we edit the radio with Radiocom like the d3? I have my d3 changed over. And would it help if we rooted the d4?

You can say that or you could say they warned me not. The pop up warning said you can not use WiFi tethering unless you have a $29.95 data plan or greater. Well I have that plan for unlimited data. So I thought I was good.what they mean is in conjunction with there will be a $30 teather charge.
I pressed continue thinking I was good because of my data plan.

[Q] Torrent Downloads HTC

Hey guys I have a small issue I am hoping you can help me with
I have recently purchased the HTC one on contract with 3, and have unlimited data on 3.9G
I want to use these speeds to download torrents, because my phone internet speed is faster that my home speeds
I have downloaded the Utorrent app, but when I open the app while on 3G connection, my phone is picking up Utorrent as a tethering app, and will stop my data connection.
is there any apps that you guys know of that will allow me to download torrents to my phone, that wont activate the tethering.
Thanks
wrong section
try Swarm https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ws.munday.swarm&hl=en
Use tTorrent.
You can set it to WiFi only or WiFi and data connection.
I use uTorrent frequently on both data and wifi, (O2 network) and have no problems myself. Sure it's the phone and not your provider shutting off your data?

No, Three can see exactly what servers you are trying to connect to. You shouldn't torrent on mobile data as it reduces speeds for everyone else :/

I would download in the house but my internet speeds suck, and im in work all day.
and where I work most people are on benefits, so my taxes contribute to the money they use to pay for their phone contracts. (or they are using EE's 4G)
So im not to bothered if their speeds get slowed down because of me.

Sure did for me. Did you turn on "hidden" function? And only USB, but it did work. Now I'm on WiFiTether Router (hidden) and it's awesome to be back on wireless.
You must change ipv6 to ipv4. There is a couple threads in general section for exact instructions.

First time Nexus owner, few simple questions.

Just switched to tmo and purchased a 64gb Nexus 6 from Motorola. Should be here next week.
I had a few device & carrier questions being this is my first Nexus device (besides tablets)
I will be using this device on T-Mobile but it's from the Moto store.
Who will I be getting updates from? T Mobile or Google directly?
I plan on flashing a custom rom (most likely Pure Shamu from what I've gathered) being that one model of nexus supports all carriers (radios).. I read that T-Mobile will be pushing an update to support wifi-calling (which I need in my home). Will that work on my particular device or is there a specific T-Mobile Nexus that I'd need?
Lastly, I do use wifi tether quite a bit, and on my current devices rom they have the unlimited wifi tether hack.
Is that something built into a rom or has to be done separately?
Thanks for any help that can be given.
Oh, forgot one question.
Also read up on the encryption ordeal.
I don't need that on my device but is there any benefit to have it or not have it enabled?
Again, thank you.

Nexus is GSM unlocked and should theoretically work on all carriers out of the box. I bought mine from the motorola store and is working without any problems.
Updates come from google directly.
If you want to use Wifi calling, I believe that you do have to be running stock firmware, nobody will know for sure until it gets released.
I believe Shamu allows you to bypass the tether limit. I'm currently using CM 12 and tethering doesn't count towards my tethering limit.
The only benefit of not having encryption enabled is faster boot times.

If you root your phone, you can add the hack yourself. I am on a stock rom, and my grandfathered data plan has no tethering allotment, but i can tether to my heart's content. I copied this from another thread:
I was able to work around the issue by modifying the following sqlite database (you'll need root):
/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
You need to add a new entry to the global table called "tether_dun_required" with a value of 0.
It looks like you need to do this because some configuration data was added to Android for T-mobile that forwards tethered data to this APN: pcweb.tmobile.com
T-mobile is probably checking to see if your account has tethering enabled when you go through this APN.
After I made this change I also needed to change my APN settings so that it uses ipv4 instead of ipv6. It seems like tethering with ipv6 does not work 100% yet.
I hope this helps.

Definitely rooting and most like run a stockish custom rom. Hoping that's built in if not I'll take a look into that.
Most of the custom roms I've run on t-mobile have that built in and are preset to ipv 4 not 6 for that exact reason.

What line of work are you in?

WIll carrier undetected, hotspot tethering be possible?

I have a rooted Note 4 on Verizons Grandfathered Unlimited Data plans and I use hotspot tethering every day.
Is it safe to say that this will not be possible on the Note 8?
THank you for any input.
If you root you can remove tethering flags, alternatively most roms have them removed. Don't know about the options without root, maybe someone else will chime in on those.
If you search the s8+ threads there have been posts about Hotspot without root being successful...I'm going to try the same methods when I get my black unlocked note 8 for sprint...if I find the threads later, I'll update this with the link.

I'm rooted and got tethering to work, but did you ever find an alternative to be able to tether without rooting? This 80% battery issue kind of gets me. I don't mind being stock for now if I could find a tethering method that works. FoxFi is a no go. I haven't tried flashing unlocked firmware. I'm a little afraid to. I heard the coverage might not be as good. Any thoughts?
