[Q] How to stop bloatware from reinstalling. - HTC Desire 510

So I successfully unlocked and rooted my phone with various methods because Boost Mobile didn't make it easy, and then managed to root via TWRP,
The reason why I rooted the phone is because I want to remove bloatware like Connection Optimizer and Boost Zone.
I got a hold of a root explorer copy and managed to delete the .apk files with their respective helping files.
On top of that, I got another application to remove the installed apps and it worked.
So, after a while of using the phone without a hassle, it just randomly turns off.
And when I boot it up again, the apps are back and more annoying than before.
I have no idea how to change folder permissions (I forgot, I did it once on LG Venice but that was a while ago)
And I really need help, the bloatware takes up to 2gb and its annoying with the constant bombardment of notifications.
Please, if you can, HELP ME.

Have you flashed a kernel with write protection removed? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=57174863&postcount=1
I've got the BOOST as well and that kept the bloatware off but occasionally they will try and re-download from the Play Store so I had to turn automatic updating of apps off and update apps manually as they come.

EDIT: I was waiting for my new user time limit to submit this. Didn't see the exact same answer posted above. That kernel worked for me (Boost 510). The later ones with performance enhancements did not. I am now bloat free.

I have that already flashed, that's the one I posted. I've now got just a base system by uninstalling EVERYTHING you can imagine. I'm just saying occasionally it would try and re-download some apps but now I've got automatic updating turned off it doesn't do it anymore.

This method didn't work out, every time I do the command it either doesn't go through or fastboot stops responding.

Your phone has to be in FASTBOOT not the os, but I assume you know that. Try adb kill-server and then adb start-server and then do the fastboot flash boot b.img or turn the computer off and turn it back on and try again. I've had this problem a couple times, these two methods worked.

I did this and it worked. However, the ability to change cameras is now missing. I had an option where I could change to front camera and now no camera app I get gives me the option to switch.

Yeah, the dev's are looking into it. It's a known issue.

[Q] General rooting questions.

Hello, i just got my first smartphone, i have AT&T and i didnt want an iphone and was more drawn toward andriod, so i got a captivate. I would really like to do alot of the things in the "Pimp my captivate" guide but i have some questions first.
1.) If i root the phone, and take off the bloatware, will i still get updates if i go to the check for updates in settings? (ex. like the gps fix and froyo update someday).
2.) Its not going to subtract any features from the phone is it ? (ex. the google syncing and everything will still work? Basically is the rooting process and or bloatware removal going to change the way the phone works besides the programs those being gone?
Ill admit i'm an andriod phone hacking noob, but i do know computers well and programming and have altered other devices in the past.

I would like to know this as well.

Since no updates have come down yet, I don't think anyone is sure of the answer to this. Keep in mind that it's a good idea to make backups of the app APKs on your sdcard before you remove them (just in case you want to reinstall them).

Removing AT&T's crappy apps won't affect the phone negatively at all. They simply won't be there, so you can't use them (if you find them useful). The only app that I can think of you may want to keep is the AT&T Hot Spots app so you phone can use free AT&T wifi at locations such as Starbucks.
Yes, you will still get updates as long as you do not install a custom ROM. (Rooting is ok).
The only functionality that will be removed will be that of the apps you delete
Thank you so much this clears up alot of the things I've been wondering.

Rooting issues
I have tried everything I have found online. The superuser icon is there. I have downloaded several apps that require the device to be rooted. I turned on usb debugging, and turned it off. I've downloaded update.zip several times.
I'm not entirely a noob when it comes to tweaking phones. I flashed roms on windows mobile and performed all sorts of modifications I got off this site.
I have the superuser icon. I downloaded titanium. Titanium says it installed busybox. I downloaded the separate busybox app from the market. That app has a popup saying that a nand unlock is necessary for the app to work. When I run it in spite of the popup, it says the device is rooted, but can't find busybox. A whoami command in adb will indicate that I'm not. I went though adb to reinstall busybox. But whenever I try to run any significant commands (eg su) it gives me a permission denied error. Googling permission denied gives me a myraid of possible causes, but it seems I'm getting far afield. I just want to get rid of the bloatware for now.
Is there another program to root this thing? Did I just miss something incredibly obvious?
hello, I recently just rooted this beast, and was wondering when, why, and how often i should clear out the dalvic cache

You shouldn't ever need to unless you are installing a ROM that requires it. the Dalvik Cache is the Java VM that Android Runs on and it does a very good job of keeping itself cleared. It does lots of Garbage collection on its own.
gotcha! thank you

[SCRIPT] GladEnabler v1.05 (All Rooted Phones Supported-Updated 05/12/2011)

Updated: 05/12/2011
GladiAtrix Enabler v1.05 (Sideloading/Tethering APN)
Quick and simple tool to enable sideloading or add the AT&T tethering APN to your device, should you need it. This requires root to work
Also, this is a Windows only script. If anyone wants to port this to Linux or OSX I'd be happy to include links in the main post.
TESTED working on:
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.26
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.52
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.57
Rooted AT&T Firmware 4.1.83
Rooted Bell Firmware 0.37.4
If you test it and it works on a version different than listed here, let me know and I'll update the first post
I do not have anything but an AT&T Atrix to test this on, but the sideloading fix should work if any device. The tethering APN is only for AT&T as it's carrier specific.
Little bit of additional info here:
Enables sideloading for any device
Adds AT&T tethering APN
You need to click "allow" to superuser when prompted.
Installation instructions:
Read the directions.
Read the directions again.
Read the directions a third time. If you do not understand a step, ASK before starting.
Download the script
Extract the files to C:\GladEnable. Do not install anywhere else. Having it inside a folder with a space will cause the script to FAIL.
Enable USB debugging (Settings -> Applications -> Development).
Connect your phone (I recommend setting USB Connection to 'None').
Run GladEnable.bat (If you're using Windows 7, run as admin by holding down control and double-clicking).
Follow the on-screen directions. You will need to tap "Allow" on your phone for each step.
Make sure you allow the superuser request on your phone or it WILL fail.
All done!
DISCLAIMER

I realize it doesn't say it in the OP, but does this add the reboot option like your original Mod?
Brilliant, Ririal
Thanks for all your amazing work. I plan on running this script tomorrow.
In the event that reboot is not in the power popup, I really like Quickboot from the market. I have a shortcut to reboot the phone under my power widget. Works great.

This is not the GladiAtrix rom. It only does sideloading/tethering APN for users who just want to enable that, or for users who were using v1 of my retain root script and didn't enable it before hand with aRoot.
The ROM (when it's done, I'm having some issues with the installer. The ROM part is technically finished ) has the reboot power menu option.

Awesome Ririal. Will the new version of the ROM root 4.1.57 without needing to go back to 4.1.26 first?

Thanks Ririal,
Many people are realizing that Titanium Backup restores App+Data well, but most system data and settings restores are breaking functionality. A factory reset will restore Blur account and some other settings that are lost but will also make side loading and tethering go away.
Now users we have a way to get those back with out a full SBF.

Bang! You got me! This is exactly what happened to me.
This update totally fixed my sideloading and tethering issues.
BTW, the script failed on me the first time, I'm not sure why. Something about permission denied on ./data/local/tmp/gladenable.sh. But the second time I ran it, everything worked.
Thank you so much Ririal!

It's possible that Motorola patched the workaround for tethering. All this script does is add the custom APN, which used to work. I haven't looked at other methods for permanently enabling tethering as this method has worked for me in the past.
Manually add APN
Is it possible to add an APN without using the script, like with the Samsung Captivate, I'm asking because I'm planning to use the phone outside the US therefore I'm gonna need an APN not from AT&T...
Thanks in advanced

Hi,
Ran the script and allowed the Superuser prompt, all finished without error --- yet I still don't have the sideloading option in Applications->Development
And when I try to sideload an app, keep getting an error message that it isn't allowed for my safety ..
What am I missing here? Am on 1.5.7 Gladiatrix, root is working fine.
Thanks for any help!

Problems...
I'm having an issue while running the command. I'm a recent iPhone user so this is all new to me. First I'd like to make sure this is all I need to do in order to install 3rd party apps (a.k.a. apps I obtain online) I don't need to do a full-blown root, do I?
While the command is running, it first asks me, "Do you want to install sideloading?" I input 'y' and hit Enter. That results in: " /system/bin/su: not found " Does this mean I need to root first?
Maybe one or more files are not getting extracted, but I don't see anything else in the download. My download contains 5 files.
1. GladEnable.bat
2. gladenable.sh
3. abd.exe
4. AdbWinApi.dll
5. AdbWinUsbApi.dll
Let me know if there's anything else you need that would help solve the problem.

Not sure, never had the sideloading not work for me. This doesn't add the checkbox in the application settings menu (what reason do you really need to uncheck it?), it just enables it. Make sure the script is completing successfully with no errors.

The phones need S-OFF or a Custom Rom. I would follow one of those threads for a solution (eventually).

Flash rbheomax's kernel (I believe both camera's work in V1), or pattyboi's kernel (both cameras work), and use Titanium Backup to remove the apps/bloatware. They shouldn't come back after that but if they do, you can always go into Play Store > Settings > Auto-update Apps and set it to Do not auto-update apps and they will quit re-installing. If you're using Flashify to flash the boot image then make sure you reboot the phone before attempting to remove the apps; if you're using TWRP to flash then you don't have to worry about that.

Has anyone else tried this kernel and can verify there are no issues? I seen HTC has a new update for my phone and wonder how that would work:
Software uptate: 1.49.652.3
This update contains important enhancements and bug fixes, including:
ALERT: Patch for critical security vulnerability ('Stagefright')
- Device Stability improvements, bug fixes
- New and or enhanced features
- Further improvements to performance
Right now, my version is 1.48.652.2
I did a backup, then installed the RUU, let their software update install to keep from getting notified about it incessantly, and then put my kernel back with the application backups.

Losing root after 2 or 3 reboots

Has anyone else had a problem where you no longer have root after about 3 reboots after using the sprint userdebug package to gain root?
After investigation, it seems that something changes permissions to /system/etc/init.sec.boot.sh
Or perhaps because nothing sets permissions on this file itself after setting up /system/etc/launch_daemonsu.sh the contents of this file and not the context or permissions are transferred to /system/etc/init.sec.boot.sh
I performed the operations that are done to launch_daemonsu.sh prior to its duplication to init.sec.boot.sh and executed it, I was then able to get a supersu prompt to grant root priveleges. I have to re-run this script every boot to get a prompt otherwise all root requests immediately fail.
I used adb root shell to make changes since it does not require supersu to manage its root privileges.
I am not sure if I needed to change permissions, but I doubt I'll be re-flashing the userdebug firmware to find out. (I was preparing to odin back to stock anyway.)
I do not know how to make this script execute during boot. I specialize in more desktop flavors of linux and Android is not quite that.
same thing happened to me just now.
not sure what to do, not sure if i have to reinstall everything again

Note 7 v2 Root Sticking
I exchanged my v1 for the v2 yesterday and did not insert my sim card. I brought it home and went through the OP steps. I inserted the sim after step 5. I was able to successfully root my Note 7 and ran Titanium to uninstall some apps but then I lost root after Samsung + updated. I don't know if it was a coincidence but I decided to retry all the steps and I immediately froze the Samsung + update then proceeded to uninstall the bloat I didn't want(including Samsung+) and my phone has maintained root since then. I have rebooted several times to test it and it has been successful every time. ROM is performing well and I have added Adaway and it too is working great.

Listen up folks. Do not and i repeat do not update any of samsungs apks. Until we can find out whats going on. It seems that samsung is now pushing updates thru their apks to check and get rid of SU. They are getting sneaky. So for now do not update any samsungs apk, not even thru google. Also do not update SU, this is another way to lose root. We are working on it. Please do not ask if we found anything, if a fix is found we will post our findings.
If you need shealth, iris scanner, samsung pay, android pay, or any other samsung apk, then you need to stay on stock firmware and not use root.
Also if anyone is having issue with files or odin not flashing, make sure you are not on the new PI4 stock ROM, if you are then odin will fail everytime and at this moment there is no way to root or down grade to the older firmware.
Otherwise Try to redownload all files as it seem that afh is/was having alot of issues with uploads and downloads. This not something that we can fix as we dont host or own that site.
Can you guys break down the steps to regain root without reinstalling the OS? Mine also lost root on v2.
It looks like my S-Health was automatically updated to the latest version, which has been reported to be a root of the cause.
Make sure that once you do all tje steps to get root. Make sure you turn wifi off. Once you turn wifi on, it will start auto updating apps in the play store which includes s health and other saamsung apps. Install package disabler and disable all samsung apps. Samsung pay, samsung+, s health, and any others. Also make sire you go back to the play store and into settings and disable auto updating of apps, jist to be on the safe side.
What i would like to know is: am i able to still use samsung cloud? Themes? Etc... because i have been avoiding them since i had to reroot yesterday....please advise.

Try them and see if you can use those services. If you lose root then you have your answer. Some of us dont use those stuff, so it is hard to answer. This is why you folks are here. Test things out. Try different things to see what works for you. Trying those things will not void your warranty. The only thing that might happen is that you might lose root.

I am currently logged into the Samsung account and have been for about 2 days now with no ill affects so far, downloaded a couple themes is all...that is with all the Sammy stuff froze and functional root.

Sudden random freezes

It started to happen to my phone after I flashed only system.img to my rooted phone, tried to get the phone back to stock like some sort of a shortcut, to try to get OTA update.
I did not recognize it right away, but it started to happen from time to time and in all random occasions.
The phone will literally freeze for about 5-10sec and then everything will go back to normal.
The standard android message will appear that app is not responding do I want to kill it or wait.
I flashed the whole phone with stock images, temporarily rooted the phone again to enable camera2, uninstalled root, and it still happens from time to time.
Any suggestions, what can I do, what to check, where to look ?
I had kernel "Kernel Adiutor (ROOT)" previously installed, but I changed nothing major, just cpu governor to ondemand, and messed a little bit with entropy. This was installed on the phone before flashing.

You may want to clean the dalvik-cache first. (Install TWRP and clean it from there) the system is storing tons of thing in there, and *for my case* wiping it was like a deliverance ?

Is the phone writing big files to the disk like an automatic Backup? That's when my phone becomes unresponsive..

No custom installed auto backup aps, only default Android syncs.
I think that it has to do something with the kernel, or something deeper then stock images, maybe dodjob is right, I will try with dalvik erase, and if I remember correctly twrp has another option to clean something else, will check it today...
Is there a way to flash default stock kernel again ?

Nope, it did not work, freeze remains.
Now I need to check what Benjamin said, about internal storage, format system, and do all over again, but now without restoring backup, starting with fresh droid install.

That sucks big time ? the only time I got a freeze was as I wanted to empty chrome beta cache. After the reboot, all went back as it should be...
I did it, finally, flashed all images again stock, and then don't restored backup of the phone offered by google, but do the clean new phone installation.
It works now, everything is setup and works as it should be, except camera2api, I did not enable that one yet.
Maybe, just maybe, the problem was with the way how camera2 api was enabled, I did it via adb shell.
How did you guys did it, if you have it enabled ?
This has started to happen to me since yesterday. I've had the phone to a couple of weeks and it's completely stock and un rooted. I rebooted the phone last night cause I thought it was some ram issue but it remains today. I'll give it a few days and hope it fixes itself.

Adb root shell. Can't think of a way this could damage anything if you just set the one property

Did you have device rooted for a while, or it was always stock ?

Thanx, I needed that confirmation, then my problem was probably caused by some application that wanted to take root actions, without root enabled, and causing havoc to the system, because I was restoring backup last two times, backup from rooted phone.
I had rooted phone, then flashed only system.img, then the problem started, I don't know...
I will use the phone tomorrow for work without camera2, to make sure that I don't have any more problems.

It's always been stock.
I had never rooted this phone and I am on September security patch, from September 6th, but for 2 days, 1-2 times a day I get some freeeze for 1-3 minutes. Today I tried to clear manually the cache from Facebook, and it took me 1 minute after I click the button "Clear cache". And then I got everything freezing. After a black screen for 10 seconds I got an error as you can see in the screenshot attached. I will repeat, never touched the phone's system. Does anybody meet this problem???

Yes this happens when lots of I/o is done on the internal disk. I hope this is just a missing optimization and not a hardware issue. But let's bug xiaomi with it. I assume you also have the 64GB version?
@kaiwanted, I had that, but not 2 times per day, but almost constantly and the stops were about 10-15 sec, not for a whole minutes.
Clean flash, clean new start a phone procedure when the phone boots, no restores of backup.
And erased Dalvik cache in TWRP.
Or, if you don't want to do this, try with uninstalling all unnecessary apps that you have in the phone, try the day use with minimum, to see what happens.

I read a lot regarding how people brick their phone with TWRP and rooting, so for now I will not use this future. But to reset my phone I will think about. Anyway I need this phone to use all my applications, not only a couple of them, because of this freezing (.
Thanks for suggestions.

So I uninstalled about 5-6 applications and freeze disappear. From which I remember, I uninstalled: Spendee, XDA Dev app, Zugo Wallpapers etc.
Still when I clear the cache manually from Applications in settings, it takes about a minute or more to clean 100-500mb. This is weird.
Anyway, thank you for the suggestion.

I did the same thing. Went through my application list, uninstalled everything I didn't need and the issue went away. I cleared like 5% of storage space with still over 50% left but it seems to have helped.
reflashed all stock, enabled camera 2 api using mi a2 toolkit (magisk method) and I have the same. Cleared everything and run flash_all.bat. enable cam 2 api again and still have the same issue. clean install of apps doesn't fix it. Any idea on how to fix the sudden freeze?
Thanks

if I completely root the device, I will still have the random freeze?
also, if I factory reset the device in the settings, the camera 2 api will be gone? thanks
