[Q] AT&T user, can't send or receive MMS/group messages while on wifi !! - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I finally narrowed this down, I haven't been able to send and receive MMS while I'm on WiFi. If I disconnect WiFi then I receive and send MMS perfectly, I can recreate this at will. This happens with my WiFi network at home and at work. What happens is I get the MMS or group message as a download button, when pressed it just looks like its downloading but nothing comes through, it says it's only 1kb size.
After extensive searching the only leads I've come up with is that it's the WiFi calling feature somehow trying to take over the MMS. I've tried freezing WiFi calling through titanium but that didn't help. IWhen I go into settings WiFi calling is off, and if I hit on then settings crashes so I can't even turn it on to configure settings, which I doubt would help anyway.
Anyone else with this issue resolve it? I'm going to try to see what WiFi ports WiFi calling uses and block them to see if that helps. But WiFi calling is off so I'm not sure if that's even the issue. I did have AT&T totally reset my messaging account and force APN settings, and I verified my APN settings match what everyone else on the forums is saying to use.

Um maybe because he has t-mobile note 4 using att sim card! Think before you post worthless questions on a thread inquiring help!

To the OP, it may be a conflict with using an AT&T sim as AT&T does not use wifi calling. Not sure what would help this other then turning wifi calling off in the phone app, which looks like you have already done. Have you tried out the CM builds at all? I know they will not have that feature baked in as it is proprietary and only works on stock or custom stock roms.

Thanks for the reply. I'm noting that I have WiFicalling settings in Titanium but I cannot find wfcservice, I'm wondering if somehow I uninstalled it with titanium. I'm wondering if that's the issue. I may just try a factory reset and leave the WiFi calling apps on there. I was just hoping someone else would have had the same issue.

Do a nandriod backup and try dirty flashing the stock rom or whatever rom you are on at the moment. Not sure if doing a factory restore would replace the lost app. Could be wrong here but that is what I would try first. If that does not fix the problem you can always restore the backup and be back to where you are now.

Thanks, I think I'll try that over Odin. I don't have a custom recovery so I'll probably try a titanium backup, although my head always spins trying to figure out how to use titanium. What's the most popular recovery for our Note 4's? Maybe I should do that so I can just nandroid backup.

Recovery! I would just install TWRP and do a nandriod. It is convenient to have the recovery built in. It makes it super easy and quick to backup and restore when trouble shooting. It is as simple as a quick 20 second flash in odin. You can do it the way you want, but it seems that it would be easier to have recovery installed. Just my opinion though.

That's weird. I'm using the t-mobile note 4 on At&t's GoPhone service without any issues. Not sure if having the phone unlocked will make a difference or if you told at&t you were using a tmbolie note 4 on their service.

ATT knows it's a T-Mobile phone and had no issues with that, or with helping me troubleshoot. I'm just getting into a new flash so will see if that helps.

Make sure sms app has the correct settings for mms. I'm using textra and had issues with it having the wrong settings.

Bleh, well a dirty flash of NK4 didn't fix it. I now have access to WiFi calling settings, I made sure it was off and checked cellular preferred just to be safe. May try a complete wipe see if that works.

Complete wipe and factory reset, nada. Still can't send or receive group messages/MMS while connected to WiFi. What happened to all the ATT users on T-Mobile hardware? None of you guys have this issue?

Just did a Odin to stock NK4 and I'm not having any issues that I'm aware of. Also in textra I have this checked

From what I've read that setting in Textra is for the same issue I'm experiencing. I'm not really into the technical aspects, but when I'm on WiFi does data automatically get turned off? What happens if you uncheck that setting? Does checking that setting also cause your stock messaging app to work correctly? Thanks.

That may help your issue, worth a shot. But double check the apn settings within Textra to make sure they're correct. A couple of times I had to change them. Otherwise it's a good app for texting.

Working here for me. Have you checked you APN settings?

APN settings are good. Now in addition to a complete wipe I've reflashed the stock ROM, flashed FireKat and flashed Dynamic Kat (awesome ROM I think I'm going to keep) and still the same issue. I'm going to swing by the ATT store and see if I can get a new SIM card, it's the only thing I can think of.

I'm having this same issue, on stock and firekat roms .
Any news

MMS stuck at 'downloading'

I seem to be getting a notification to say I have a message but when I check the message it just says downloading. So I rang vodafone and got them to send me the APN details and re-entered them. Got my friend to resend the message and it worked.
The day after the same thing has happened - I have not changed my APN so not sure why this is happening. Standard messaging app on cyanogen latest. Did a bit of searching but all seems to be related to APN issues and activation which I know this isn't.
wtf
So the same person sent me an mms and it came through with the other one above it still saying downloading... :S
I have this problem recently also. He never got an answer. Is there a fix?
Edit: I came from a clean wipe and I'm using "Blue Magic MKllr1".
Same here, I have to turn my wifi on then I can download it which is strange because my internet is out but seems to trigger the 3g to download it not a fix by any means but it may help someone out.
And yes I have mms activated and all the rest, as the OP stated been there tried that apn wise and mine also went the same way, one day it work and next it didn't
This also happens to me... but it only happens when I get a message from a Verizon phone.
This is a strange problem, when I first flashed a ROM on my G1
I remember not having any data connection at all.
I had to use wifi for any data transfers, and to Sign in with Google.
Upon reboot though everything was setup right, you should check
if it's a bug with your ROM.
Still didn't fix. It's the same on edge, 3g and wifi.
I use to have this problem and it was frustrating to manually switch between using MMS APN and 3G APN. Try this....
in Your 3G APN, under the APN type, type in "default"
in Your MMS APN, under APN type, type in "mms" and make sure your "Proxy" and "Port" settings are also entered under MMS proxy and MMS port.
After putting these things in, I can automatically switch between MMS and 3G and the downloading will actually start downloading and not just remain stagnant with nothing to show. Hope this works.
Sorry if it does not because I am not in the States. But let me know how it goes
I didn't know the apn settings for U.S. T-mobile so I tried a work around that worked! i flashed the base htc rom, then newest cynagen, then fastest 3.0.3, then Blue Magic MKllr1, then metamorphed an expresso theme. All no wipe. MMS works! I still would love to know what goes wrong from one rom to the next.
I apologize for reviving an old thread but from a quick search, I didn't see anyone with the solution I figured out.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S 4G on TMO and this same exact thing happened to me. Someone sent me a picture MMS and it got stuck on downloading. I tried enabling and disabling Wifi, made sure I had 4G, etc.... Nothing worked. The MMS they sent me still said "Downloading" and was stuck. There was no way to abort/redownload/etc. Meanwhile, I could send/receive other MMS just fine.
Finally, I tried going into the messaging settings and disabling auto-retrieve. When I went back to the thread, lo and behold, there was now a download button!! I hit it and presto, the MMS downloaded!
Hope someone finds use from this.

Thanks, had this issue on my Samsung Mesmerize and found this thread googling. worked for me.
Thank You sooo MUCH! this was annoying the heck out of me, but your method fixed it:}
Another bump, this was the fix. I had data disabled to save battery when an MMS came in. It was forever "downloading". Data on/off, reboot phone, didn't matter. Flipped it to manual download, turned on data, and hit download. It came right through.
hmmm
Im on a rogers.captivate running apex 11 i believe. None of these fixes worked for me.
same here: i'm on 4.0.4 AOSP (although a samsung note, but as said: AOSP)
and a mms from a girl-friend is stuck with "downloading". none of the above will make the "downloading" disappear. sending and receiving of other mms work fine. guess i have the same issue with the initially wrong APN settings!
anyone has an idea how to reset the downloading?
I know its an old thread but if anyone searches to here....go into settings and uncheck auto download mms...then go back and there will be a download button, click it and boom...itll start downloading. Then go back and recheck auto download.
Can't receive mms attachment pics with Inspire 4g after full wipe

[Q] MMStroubles on conition 3.04

Hello,
If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. I just flashed cog 3.04 from 2.8. I now cannot send or receive mms messages unless my wi-fi is turned off. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
mms messages are sent over your cell data connection...not sure why it would not be enabling it automatically but that is the problem.
what provider are you with?
My mms stopped working with rogers. Check your apn settings. for some reason mine had 2 letters backwards.
SetTings, wireless and networks, mobile networks, access point names. google your provider apn settings to see what they should be set to.
Edit: didnt read the last bit of your post lol. If it only works with wifi turned off im not sure. I use to have a separate apn for data and mms, but now there is 1 for both, does anyone know if by turning on wifi and disabling your data connection could disable both if your data and mms are both in the same apn? Just a thought...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
It is strange, if I turn the wi-fi off, it will send. I am on ATT in West Virginia. I will try to check my settings.
Thanks.
The mms app should enable the data connection automatically to send the message. you need to ask what is up in the rom thread and see if there is a fix.
I tried posting there twice and no one answered my question. I think I may just flash another Rom. I can't post there anymore because of post count restrictions.
It is pretty annoying to have to toggle wi-fi on and off to send a mms. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it, though.
Head over to the ban the person above you thread....or the count to 10,000 one....your restriction will be gone in no time.
I have similair problems. I can recieve but cant send. its been like that since yesterday. just started out of the blue I was running cog.3.2 then flashed to 3.4 no luck. then flashed perception 10.2 and still no luck. going to odin my phone back to stock and go from there. lately my phone has been having problems with reception and sending texts. Its been on going since I flashed to cog 2.8.
I really like cognition, but the bug is annoying! LOL! I am sure he will get it fixed, I just thought I had done something wrong in flashing it.
so as a update, I Odin flashed to stock still no good on sending out text messages. flashed back to cog 3.04 and tried a couple of different modems such as ji1,ji2,ji3,jk6 and still no luck. I'm begining to think something went wrong with my plan or my sim.
Issues with Cognition 3.04
I had installed cognition 3.04 and have been using it for the past couple of days.... the performance compared to conginition v2.8b is faster. Also some issues that i have is my data connectivity keeps dropping.
The other issues that i have is when i have data connectivity on it keeps popping up and displays "call cost" every few minutes where it does not get deducted from my balance. Please let me know how to go about resolving the issue.
Has anyone else experienced these issues.
Try stock or a different rom to see if it persists.
isolated my problem to be a sim card issue. swapped out sim cards with a buddy and all functions started working. called customer service and then got sent to tech support. they also came to that conculsion. visit to at&t and one free sim card, I'm back in business

No MMS after 4.4.2

Hello,
I have an AT&T HTC One running a Straight Talk (ATT LTE) SIM. When I first had the phone everything was running great. Great speeds, SMS, MMS, etc. Now, for some reason, I no longer get any MMS! I still get full speeds and regular messages, but not pictures or group messages (sending or receiving).
We set my wife's S3 Mini up the same way, and she is able to get everything (minus LTE for obvious reasons). The only difference is that I updated to 4.4.2.
I've tried every single ST APN I can find, and still am not able to send/receiving any MMS's. Has anyone else had this issue?
Thanks.
P.S. If this is in the wrong area, I apologize.
I am having the same issue. SMS works fine, no MMS. MMS just sits in Undelivered status.
Running rooted 4.4.2, S-OFF, Bulletproof Kernel.
unfortunately same for me. Already double checked APN settings and network types.
Tried many different APN from my carrier and still no MMS, mobile data is working good.
When I try to send/receive a MMS I can see the mobile data icon appear briefly but no data get transferred.
Already contacted my carrier. Tech support said my apn was properly set and that everything on their side was good (in my account).
I might try to downgrade my sw soon so I can see if its really 4.4.2 that is causing this. I'll report back.
Thanks for the replies! Glad it isn't just me. I've even tried using other Messenger apps, but still nothing.
Same here. HTC ONE at&t on Straight Talk service. No mms after update. This is so frustrating! I was on the phone with ST yesterday for a few hours and they are all clueless on how to fix it. The only advice I got was to downgrade back to 4.3

I've noticed this issue since T-Mobile updated mine to 4.4.2. However, I think I've figured out a workaround. I had checked APN, everything was fine. But, I use wi-fi most of the time. I couldn't receive any MMS, people would say they sent me stuff but I never got it, or I'd get a message that "can't be downloaded". So, when I was talking to a friend, I had him send me an MMS. I didn't get it. But, I turned off the Wi-Fi and suddenly the MMS appeared. We tested it over and over again. With wi-fi connected I can't receive MMS, as soon as wi-fi disconnects, the MMS are immediately downloaded. A big bug in the 4.4.2 I think.

I'm on ATT - not straight talk. Running ViperOne 5.7, which is a Sense 4.4.2 ROM. Group MMS stopped working seemingly out of nowhere. Have tried Hangouts, Stock Messages, and EvolveSMS. Played with APN settings, tried the wi-fi on/off trick, no luck. The strange thing that I have noticed is that every time I restart the device, it goes ahead and sends/receives all the MMS before going back to not working.
ST had me go into me browse (?) and delete the cache, cookies, etc. They apparently tell everyone that. Does not work. This makes no freaking sense!

MMS not functioning while on Wifi

I have a weird issue that when my nexus 6 is connected to wifi, it can't send or receive mms messages. In the Google messaging app, it shows mms as failing to download. The second I turn off wifi though, everything goes through, both sending and receiving. My nexus 5 on lollipop had the same issue. Has anyone else on 5.0 experienced this? I couldn't find anything on the AOSP bug list. I am unencrypted, rooted and have TWRP.

The second I turn off wifi though, everything goes through, both sending and receiving. My nexus 5 on lollipop had the same issue. Has anyone else on 5.0 experienced this? I couldn't find anything on the AOSP bug list. I am unencrypted, rooted and have TWRP.

That's been my experience with every device I've ever owned on both Sprint and T-mobile. Nothing out of the ordinary there
That's unfortunate. What's weird is that my nexus 5 with kitkat had it working just fine. I guess I'll just hop the wifi calling fixes it whenever that comes out.
My Nexus 6 doesn't like to send texts while on wifi. It takes a very long time for them to send but if I flip wifi off they send immediately. I haven't tried MMS but I suspect it would be a similar experience. I just leave wifi off at home now. I get LTE anyway and have unlimited data.
I had this problem at first, but seems to work fine now. Only thing different I did was change APN protocol to IPV4/IPV6 instead of IPV6. I read somewhere switching it to IPV4 solves MMS problems, but so far the combo has worked for me. Not sure if that was the issue though, worth a shot.
Now if I could fix my general signal issue, that'd be great =/
I hope this helps. It worked for me when I had the note 4 but now I'm getting a Nexus, don't have one to test this on yet but you guys can.
In short you can try setting up an APN with the MMS port as 80 because right now its probably blank.

I'm having the same issue on Cricket with my Nexus 6. Rooted, stock 6.0. With my wifi turned ON, I can not send or receive any grouped messages. I cannot send or receive any MMS messages.
I use the stock messaging app.
There doesn't seem to be a solution. I've quadruple checked the APN. Made sure the MMS Port is set to 80, nothing has worked. I feel other solutions like Using a Different Messaging App, or remove every App are bandaids for symptoms. Not solutions for the problem.

The issu could be due to the app not switching over to data properly when needed. This could also be a radio issue among other things. Without a logcat to tell where and why it is failing everyone is just shooting in the dark.

A logcat is trouble shooting 101. Just search for how to do one and you will get a few tut. It does need root sometimes so keep that in mind.
I had major mms issues on T-Mobile. I did some searching and changed the apn. I also now use hangouts for SMS/mms, and all is well again. I could not send mms at all before with WiFi on. Make sure your apn is correct for your carrier. Mmsc was blank right out of the box on T-Mobile.

I am on T mobile and it had worked fine until 6.0.
I was on cricket and had this issue; drove me insane. I finally ported my number to Google Voice and started a new line with cricket. With GV handling all the SMS/MMS through Hangouts, I haven't had any issues, whether it be on wifi or not. Might be worth considering.

MMS no longer auto retrieves with oreo

I made the switch to oreo several weeks ago and have not been able to get any MMS messages to automatically turn the data on.
I've tried quite a few messaging apps to make sure it wasnt that and have tried several different APN settings for Cricket.
At this point it just seems like I may have missed something when flashing over to Oreo (N95OU version).
Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix for it?

I have the same problem on Verizon. I can't send MMS on stock messenger app. Why do we have to suffer every time a software update happens? I have a Note 8!

No suffering here. Awesome battery life. Everything works just like it should. Are you on the official crc2 oreo release? I'm actually using crc5 but even on crc2 I didn't have that problem.

any work around with not able to send sms? I ahve the note 8 N9500. before I can send sms with att and tmobile sims as I have dual sim. after I rooted I can't send anymore sms. apns are all correct, wipe the phone even to factory settings. then Even tried the revert to original firmware not working yet. anybody that had the same problem with sending sms after update?
Bump.. anyone found a solution to this? I updated to Oreo on Verizon note 8, and MMS stopped auto retrieving MMS. Now everytime there's a group msg, I have to turn off WiFi and click the download button to download msgs, timestamp will be messed up tho.
Please anyone know how to fix this, it's annoying. I want to go back to nought if I cantget this to work.
Couldn't download mms on my note8 after software "upgrade". Took my note 8 to the Samsung guru at Best Buy. She got rid of downloaded messaging apps, told me I should be using the original firmware. Set it up. Turned on data and it worked. I began downloading mms immediately.

MMS works when data is turned on. It's just that when data is turned off or when both WiFi and data is turned on, MMS does not auto retrieve. It used to auto retrieve on 7.1.1 when data is turned off or both WiFi and data turned on. When data turned off, MMS used to auto turned on data temporarily to download the MMS, but not anymore. I really want to fix this. It's very annoying. Now, It will just tell me there's a MMS message to download
