[Q] Will this car charger work? - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

I just went to Verizon to buy a car charger and when I get home I realized it says made for iphone. I'm not sure if that matters at all but I wanna double check because its a 12W charger and with this new supercharging stuff going on I don't wanna burn my sexy battery. Heres the charger:
http://www.belkin.com/hk/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=693329

You should be all good to go because I use a Anker® 24W Dual-Port Rapid USB Car Charger with PowerIQ technology to charge my Moto Maxx I just got the other day in my car and haven't had any issues with the battery at all.

No, it won't; you can't even plug it in. iPhones are the only phones that have different charging plugs.
This is the charger you want:
http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Vehicle-Adapter-micro-USB-Charger/dp/B000S5Q9CA/
It's the only car charger I've found that actually charges fast enough to maintain the phone's battery when the GPS navigation is on, plus it's way cheaper than anything you'll find in a brick & mortar store.
EDIT: I missed the fact that the car charger you posted has a detachable USB cable. I guess it would work if you use the USB cable that came with the phone, though you'll have to see how well it charges it when in use.

Actually any micro USB cable will work. I buy them from monoprice and you can't find them any cheaper. The quality is really good too.

Agreed, your charger is certainly cheaper than others, but there are many chargers out there that can charge at a fast enough rate. I have a cheap Chinese dual-USB charger ($0.99) that works to charge during GPS navigation. My current charger (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0077PM3KG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) also charges while navigating too.. The key is to find one with at least 1A charge rate. Again, yours is certainly cheaper than my Scosche one, and it charges 2 devices at once...

I have a Maxx and use the Verizon quick charge car charger. Expensive comparatively when viewed next to the value chargers but the construction quality is among the best I have seen, the light can be handy when plugging in after dark, the ability to put on a nice shot of battery quickly during a commute can be quite handy.

USB to Power Outlet adapter?

Where can I buy more of the little adapter that you plug the USB cable in to, then plug the adapter into to your wall power outlet?
I'm planning on coupling it with this cable: monoprice!com/products/product.asp?c_id=103&cp_id=10303&cs_id=1030307&p_id=5459&seq=1&format=2
My Incredible charges MUCH faster when plugged in to a power outlet than it does when plugged in to USB.
I just bought two off of Ebay that I will be trying out. I will let you know if they work which ones they are. I do know that the one from Monoprice.com doesn't work well so I would avoid that one.
Ok I got a few of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...&_trkparms=algo=LVI&its=I&otn=2#ht_500wt_1182
"PLO" brand "Powerbug" - meant for GPS devices but they work perfect with the incredible. 5v, 1A, 5watt (same as stock HTC charger). I got two at $8 each so not bad. They are nice looking compared to the generic Monoprice usb charger.
EDIT ** Don't think these have as much power as the stock charger. Spare parts states "Charging (USB)" when using these, so it's like being plugged up to a computer. Still a good deal at $8
The usb to wall plugs from monoprice are no good. I ordered several before I knew better. None of them worked properly...or for Any longer than 20 minutes.

Have you actually got it and tried it and it works? I did a search on Best Buy's website and they have them but they're $27! If yours works, I'll snag a few off of ebay before people realize how useful they are and jack the price up.

It sure does, however, if you take a look at the picture, its simply a USB slot that the mini-usb cable plugs into, which means that any USB cable could work as the OP asked about. I'd say this would work well. However, I grabbed http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/powerduouniversal and it works great and I can just move my cable from my car to my house and have power everywhere.
don't buy aftermarket USB A/C adapters unless it's just for an overnight charge. You can't use the screen when using an aftermarket adapter. It's quite annoying. every single touch screen phone I have had has this problem.

Yes I bought two and both of them work fine. Not sure if they charge as fast or not as the STOCK charger, but they are rated the exact same. The only thing I don't like about them is they have a blue light around the USB port. I found those at $8 each which is a lot better than paying $30 each somewhere else. I found these in another thread and the person was finding them even cheaper at some discount store I had never heard of. I'll leave one at work, one out in the garage or somewhere. The HTC charger will stay in the bedroom.

That's not true. While the monoprice wall charger DID have a screen issue, the screen works perfectly fine with these chargers. And I used all kinds of chargers with my previous HTC Touch and never had a screen issue.

I have several aftermarket USB AC heads that work just fine with the Incredible. All of them purchased some time ago.
I've been using my old iphone power blocks without any problems, though its only been a couple days if charging.
Depending on the price, you may be able to snag some fairly cheap with all of the companies that make cheap iphone/ipod accessories. Unfortunately I have enough power blocks so I don't have a need to buy/test any others.
I would be curious about other peoples experiences though.

I have some Ipod AC adapters as well. I was thinking they'd be safe to use since lower amp for the Incredible... but what of the reverse? Can you use the Incredible AC wall block safely on other devices? It's 1A instead of the .5A for Iphone/Ipod.
I'm trying to travel with less charges!

It worked just fine.

There's qutie a number of cigarette lighter adapters available that offer a standard USB port. You'd supply your own cable. Here's an example:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Mini-Car-Cigare...053289?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item2a0eed35e9
No, AFAIK, none of these will charge as fast as the standard NC charger. For that, you'd need to go thru the hassle of getting an inverter.
Monoprice has cigarette lighter to female usb chargers for $1.16 that you can use your usb cable with.

Larger, heavier, more cords, much more expensive (when compared to a $1 cig-to-usb)...
Just has to be able to push out the current needed. Otherwise it may not charge, or it will charge very slowly.
The Scosche reVIVE II Dual USB Car Charger for iPad has 2.1 and 1.0 amp usb outlets, I use this for plugging in my evo and nc. It definitely charges them both even while having all the wireless radios going and tethering with gps and both screens full bright.

Same issue here, I have a road-trip coming up this summer and I'd love to load up my NC with music and dash-mount it but it'll be a 14-20 hour drive (depending on the number of whiz breaks the wife and kids need) and I don't think I could push the battery quite that long and the inverter when wired to the radio creates quite a buzzing.

Are you using the Nooks specific cable on the 2.1A connection? I too am going on a trip soon, and would love a car charger that can actually CHARGE the nook while using it..
www.amazon.com/Scosche-reVIVE-Dual-Charger-iPad/dp/B003N7NO4Q
Is this the one you have? It looks nice and the price looks okay. Nice find. I also saw a wall plug dual usb version by same company on the same page, do you have any info on that one too? It would be nice to stream line travel chargers to a minimum, thanks.
It definitely charges both. Like I said in my previous post, I usually have both my Evo runniong and the Nook full bright display on for 50 minute commute, using TetherGPS, wifi hotspot, torque and bluetooth, google navigation pulling satellite imagery, and playing mp3s. Granted, it is slower to charge than without all that stuff running but my previous car charger would lose charge with my evo running just gps and no wifi hotspot previously.
I am using stock blackberry usb cables that I ordered from Amazon as well for $1.25 for a pair (google 'B001UC9NOQ', can't post links yet.) These are nice, thick cables that handle the charger great. I leave them plugged in inside the truck at all times. I have not used that Scosche wall charger, I use the stock chargers for travel that remain in my backpack, and I have other usb cables I use to charge at home. I would imagine it works just as well though.

Let us know if it works for you. An Amazon reviewer just reported that the Scosche reVIVE II didn't work on their Nook Color:
The nook color needs 1.9 amps, this can't do it. Scosche claims 2.1 amps but it isn't even close. It BARELY charges the nook if the machine is sleeping, when on, the battery charge goes down even while supposedly "charging." Playing video, it's even worse. On top of that if I try to charge a regular phone it puts out too much amperage on the 1 amp side and overheats the phone. Save your money, look elsewhere.
Click to collapse
However, the reviewer may not know what they're talking about. A charger cannot put out "too much amperage." Too much voltage perhaps, but not too much amperage (current). A device draws only the current it needs.
An iPad needs an amperage around 2 A also. I got the Belkin Charge 2.1 made for the ipod/ipad and it DOES charge the nook color. It has a 12V plug with one USB outlet at 2.1A. I used the cable from the nook color obviously...
See, part of my worry is not the current output, but if the nook can actually communicate with these chargers and get a full 1.9A draw, instead of the detault 500mA over non B&N chargers...

I bought the same Belkin iPad charger from Best Buy. Rated at 2.1A. I used it with the B & N USB cable that came with my Nook Color. I used the 'Battery Monitor' software mentioned earlier here or on another post to compare charge current readings against the stock B&N wall charger/cable. The Belkin was charging right at 500 mA (NC was using ~450 mA, software showing +36 mA current). So somewhere the B & N cable & charger must have a unique way of determining that it is a B&N charger / cable and to allow the full 2.1A charge. I used the Belkin 12V charger on my TomTom and it allowed just over 1A charge, so I know the Belkin iPad charger is fine.
Yes, it does charge the Nook Color, if you are at 800 Mhz and minimum brightness running non-intensive applications--and it barely charges at that ~50 mA. It does turn the charge indicator on the B&N cable orange, and the status indicates battery charge on the screen.

Clicked thanks on accident lol. Any USB car charger should work, but I would make sure you grap a 1 amp one just so it has enough output to charge the tablet at a decent rate.
probably better with a 2amp one. samsung makes one for the tab2, about $12 on amazon, and just use your own microusb cable to connect to it.

Yup, go with a 2Amp one. Most of the cigarette lighter usb chargers are 2.1A.
Avoid the cheap Chinese 2+Amp car chargers, they can be so badly made they cause enough interference to wipe out your FM radio.
/edit 1Amp will be fine but don't go lower, the N7 would likely burn it out.
FYI I tried a 5v 1a wall charger and my gnex7 said f u wouldn't take the charge. 2a or nothing I say

Do you already have the Nexus 7? If so, can you take a look at the charger and see if rated at 1A output and/or try to charge it with a charger that came with your phone?
I am just curious if it can actually charge with less than 2A. The charger listed in the Play Store outputs 2Amps and I thought most tablets require 2A to charge.

Still waiting, should only be a couple of days now though...
I know this is something most people never do...but if you read the manual for the Nexus 7 it says you can charge it on a standard USB port with the Nexus 7 in sleep mode (no doubt because the power draw is much less). Standard USB ports are typically .5A...sometimes less. I would say that's the actual minimum. For the fastest charging 2A is what you want though.
The ASUS charger that comes with the N7 is rated at 2A (10W). I tested an old BlackBerry 0.85A (~4W) micoUSB charger and it seemed to work fine and the N7 didn't complain though I didn't do any scientific tests against the charging rates.
The 0.5A (2.5W) chargers probably won't even charge the unit if you're actively using it.
Cheers,
Kermee

Yeah...read my previous post...the manual says you can charge on a standard usb port (0.5A sometimes less) but only if the Nexus 7 is in sleep mode...ie you're not actively using it. If you can't charge it while connected to USB and it's in the sleep state...then your usb port is probably a low power USB port (<0.5A).
For those looking for a good backup battery charger for it...I recommend this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005NGKR54/ref=oh_details_o05_s00_i00
works perfectly with my Nexus 7 (just make sure to use the correct USB out port on it as only one of them is 2A)
DealExtreme Charger

http://www.dealextreme.com/p/car-ci...-port-for-google-nexus-7-tablet-146751?item=8
Will be ordering will update when arrives. Also they're carrying Nexus 7 Cables in Pink, Green and Orange.
Was using a Sprint micro-USB plus charger (model PVX8823) with attached cable and standard USB port for 2nd device that I was using for my phone. Output is 0.65Amp which isn't sufficient and will slowly drain the N7 battery while in use. ~$35 at Sprint retail store. Wouldn't recommend for obvious reason.
Fortunately, had a spare Motorola SPN5400A 1Amp I bought with some screen protectors from Amazon because it was cheap like ~$5. 1Amp is sufficiently to maintain the charge while in use at near worse case running 3D games like Dead Trigger, Shadowngun, etc. So, 1Amp is minimum threshold.
You need a charger that:
1) Is capable of 2A (1.5A may be sufficient, 1A is a little too low)
2) Shorts D+ and D- together - This rules out most iPad chargers.
If it says it is made for iPod/iPad it will not work without modifications or adapters.
Samsung tablet chargers will work.
If you take an iPad charger, open it up, and short D+ and D- together, it will work.

Most chargers for android phones will work. I use my HTC charger for ,mine and I bought a car charge that has the standard micro USB connector but also has another USB port so I can charge 2 devices at the same time with 1 charging unit. You droid razor charger will work just fine. You just need to locate a charger that is capable of charging 2 devices at the same time such as this one

So are any of these confirmed 100% to work? the one a few links back (GTMax) says works with iphone, and I thougth that meant would NOT work with N7. So I am confused on what will work, and I am already on my 2nd Nexus7 being I blew out the USB trying a bunch of differnt chargers for the car.
I would like something that is small and can have multiple USB plugged in, but not a show stopper, just hope to find something on Amazon (Prefer Prime) so I can oder with my case today. Really want to use this in the car more (GPS\GoogleMusic..ect.), but with no power not a great option.
Thanks in Advance,

Fast charge hack

I bought what i thought were a couple higher quality universal chargers. They charge my razr fast but won't charge my nexus 7 at all. I have one of the chargers pulled apart but before I do any soldering I want to make sure -- if I cross the 2 data points will it work?
Well I couldn't wait 10 minutes so I tried. Answer: no. Wtf?
Can anyone tell me how to hack these chargers to make them work? Is there a resistor I need to remove?
Isn't it more likely to be a software thing?
With my samsung Tab 7.7 i couldn't charge it using my ipad charger until a Dev modded the software on the tablet.
are they 2Amp chargers? most universal chargers are only 1Amp
Well whatever the problem is, I want to charge my tablet in more than one place, I want to charge it faster than the 16 hours generic chargers are taking, and I don't want to pay $30 for OEM chargers.
If your tablet is taking 16 hours to fully charge, return it. I can drain mine after heavy use of the day and its still fully charged in under 6 hours.

@soldeus: There's nothing wrong with my tablet. The OEM charger works fine and some of my generic chargers work, they just don't have the current. (See below)
@vivan: They are 1A chargers, but they should still work. They don't charge at all. The 500ma Blackberry charger I'm using here at work will charge it in about 8 hours.
Ironically the move to almost-universal micro usb chargers has made the market for them even worse. Now, instead of having to buy a new charger every time you buy a new phone, you have to buy a dozen different chargers till you find one that actually works. Like I said, I didn't try to cheap out. I got a high quality charger.

The OEM charger is 2A for a reason. Because the tablet uses more power, it needs more current to charge at a fast pace.
Your generic 1A chargers are probably just enough to keep the tablet powered on, without draining (or charging) the battery.
If you can find a 2A universal charger, it should work just like the OEM one.

No, my 1A chargers are doing NOTHING at all. I plug it in and the charging icon doesn't come on. Reviews have tested these chargers at about 950ma and as I said, my 500ma Blackberry charger isn't too bad.. It's not lack of power, it's something else.
My guess is it has whatever resistor it needs to make it an "ipad" charger. And the vast majority of 2A chargers will, too.
So.. back to my original question: what do I need to do to make this charger charge my tablet? I KNOW it's possible. I just need to find the guy who can tell me how.
I also need a charger for my car, my usb power adapter in the car does not work, need to know what car charger will work as this tablet is supposed to be my car stereo replacement, sucks having to bring your stereo in to charge it and hope it lasts till you get done work
I bought the Scosche dual 10 Watt car charger, isn't here yet though. It does say it wont charge the Samsung tablets, maybe due to the proprietary cord because apparently there is a cord that works with them. It's not a specific ipad charger and does say it works with Android devices and tablets.
On a side note, what's the best way to determine what your N7 is actually charging at?
Both of my generic chargers won't work either, a 2.1A generic iPad charger, and a 1A standard USB charger. Considering it WILL charge off a 500ma USB port, it's not a current/amperage issue, it's a software/proprietary hardware issue.

I use a verizon branded car charger to charge my N7 but I think they charge $30 for it at the vzw store.
I suggest you read this page as it may have some info to help you modify your charger:

the cost isn't so much the issue, its the actually working part. do they have one with an angled micro usb so i can mount the tablet in the car properly or preferably a usb adapter one where i can use my own cord
For $30 you could order a handful of different ones on ebay or monoprice and find something that works. But I want a dual charger.

I won't say 100% but I would bet the probability is very high. For the 1A charging they all seemed to play the same game with the voltage on the data lines. Not sure you'll get 2A but you'll at least get 1A.
Edit... maybe not, see this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781680
I have a philips as351 audio dock that pushes 2A out of the micro-usb charger and the usb port on the back and neither will charge the N7. Bummer because it looks so nice on the dock to

Turbo Charger for Car

So one of the best things about the Turbo is the Turbo Charging. I wanted to be able to do this in my car, but there was no Car Turbo Charger on Motorola's website. Eventually found out that they don't make one, but other companies do. After looking on Amazon, found this guy: http://goo.gl/rbfX1H Only cost $16 (at least when I bought it) and has additional usb charging port for additional device. Comes in white as well. And yes, it turbo charges the same as the home turbo charger which is awesome!!!
The key is to just make sure the charger supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 - there are several others on Amazon you might want to check out, but I found this one to be the best for the money and features and it's working great for me!
This is pretty useful, I didn't know we had quick charge on car
Umm... Verizon sells them.

This is the one I purchased, as I liked the idea of the tiny LED light at the tip.
Working great for me
Still loving my Onite Quick Charge Car Charger - I added a YouTube video review (and unboxing) for anyone who wants a closer look at it: https://youtu.be/LMUCoRUbKyc
the link from amazon isn't working to me, what's the name of this charger?

This is the one I bought. Probably the same one. Dual port Turbo charger. Don't worry. IF the 2nd device is not a Quick Charge device (old tablet, old phone), it's still safe. Will automatically downscale to the charge needed.
$15.99

I use the original quick charger that came with my phone in my car with an ac car power inverter. So anything with a normal plug can go into your cigarette lighter port. Basically something like this...
http://www.amazon.com/ENERGIZER-Ultra-Silent-Inverter-cigarette-compatible/dp/B00VMRHE7C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1438281631&sr=8-2&keywords=12+watt+car+power+inverter
This is a little expensive because it has USB ports too. But Walmart, Amazon, etc. always have sales on these. The one I have I got for $9.99 with tax. Just gotta look around. I just did a quick search for an example.
I haven't tried the two port ones with quick charge, however
The Choe 4 port quick charger adfoc.us/29745255996782
and the Tronsmart 4 port charger adfoc.us/29745256032891
have both performed great for me. I have to give the Tronsmart the edge due to simply feeling a bit more solid, not having a glossy finish, the longer warranty and the 5 star rating vs the choe's 4 star.
Someone tested this?
