Questions about sunshine unlock tool - Moto X Q&A

Hi, I am using VZW X with stock 4.4.2 and I would like to purchase BL unlock code from Sunshine tool. However I am not sure if this is permanent. So basically I have below questions:
1, If I flash stock 4.4.2 after unlocking BL using that tool, will my BL be locked again? (Flash BL with same version)
2, If I flash higher stock ROM like 4.4.4 or future Lollipop after unlocking BL using this tool, will my BL be locked again? (Flash BL with higher version)
My guessing to those would be no and yes. Thanks in advance for your time to read this or even kind enough to reply me

First off, the sunshine doesn't provide you with the unlock code. It unlocks it for you and that's all. OTA's and sbf's will not relock your bootloader <inert stock warning about never downgrading>. The only thing that will relock it is the explicit fastboot command. If you had the code you could unlock-relock-reunlock to your heart's content but I believe sunshine will only work to unlock the first time.

Thanks. Can I understand your word as after I purchase unlock from sunshine I can flash BL to current version or higher version and still keep it unlocked? And for your explicit command I believe you mean 'fastboot OEM lock', is it correct?

Yes. It has been posted recently a few times around this forum which bootloader codes correspond to which android version numbers. Always flash a matching or higher version to what you have and don't be tempted to get around that rule by only flashing parts of an sbf via fastboot. It's very risky and has bricked a lot of people's phones.
Yes, "fastboot oem lock" (or mfastboot oem lock) is the only way to end up with a relocked bootloader. Mind you that's "relocked". There is no way to go back to "locked" status to hide that you previously unlocked.
Remember that flashing SBFs and taking OTAs will unroot but you can always root again with an unlocked bl.

To expand and add a little to what @cntryby429 has already said..
Unlike the standard/official way of unlocking the bootloader (getting the code and issueing a fastboot oem unlock uniquecode), using Sunshine to unlock the bootloader is exploiting a vulnerability on the phone. To put it another way, Sunshine is a "hack." You do not get the bootloader unlock code. Because its a Hack, it only works ONE TIME. So if you unlock with sunshine, then relock later, you will not be able to unlock again.
When unlocking the official way (using the bootloader unlock code), flashing roms and newer SBFs and OTAs does not re-lock you. Re-locking is only possible by following the process and doing a Fastboot Oem Lock. All reports so far have been, that if you use Sunshine while on 4.4.2 or lower, flashing 4.4.4 SBF does not relock you. I don't know enough about Sunshine, and I haven't seen it been said, so I don't know what will happen if/when Lollipop comes to the 2013 X. i.e I've not seen it asked/answered... What if lollipop for the 2013 X contains patches for the vulnerability exploited by Sunshine, will it undo Sunshine's effects and will you be locked again?
As for the Downgrade warning, and bootloader versions...
30.70 = original 4.2.2
30.71 = 4.2.2 OTA with camera update
30.B2 = 4.4
30.B4 = 4.4.2
30.B7 = 4.4.4

[Q] Rooting N00B Question

I have the Verizon Dev Edition Moto X. Understanding that I won't void my warranty if I unlock the bootloader, it has been stated in many threads that even if you re-lock the bootloader it still will give you a warning boot screen (unlocked BL) because there are flags that are permanently changed on the phone once you unlock it.
That being said, I am very non-committal, so I first want to just root the phone and install safestrap. I have seen a ton of tools out there that root your device, however I am confused as to which one I should run (e.g. slapmymoto, pwnmymoto, etc). I am on the latest firmware (4.4), so I think it requires you to downgrade? Any words of sage advice is appreciated...
Also, any changes I make to my phone, I can always RSDLite my way back to 100% stock correct?

I would start here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2536200
I don't know why the unlocked bootloader warning screen would stay set if you relocked it, but you can change that screen to display whatever you want. See here for details:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2417961
Since you have the dev edition, you should be able to unlock, install TWRP, and root without slapmymoto or pwnmymoto. I did it all AFTER installing the latest OTA, and I had no trouble.
I have not used RSDLite, but that is the way I understand it.

Sell or trade your dev edition. Installing SafeStrap on that phone is such a waste of time and energy.
Or read more. There are ways to remove the boot logo screen.
Can anyone confirm whether or not unlocking the boot loader sets a permanent flag?

It appears to. And the statement about still receiving the unlocked bootloader warning after re-locking the bootloader is correct.
However, since the warranty of the Dev Edition is not voided, just unlock the bootloader, root, and then get rid of the message by replacing the logo.bin

You bought a dev edition, it doesn't matter if the flag is set or not.

AT&T Moto X - 4.4.4 - Root & Unlock Boot loader?

Is there any root method that will work for an at&t moto x running on 4.4.4 and unlock bootloader? Or am i stuck running stock?
Enjoy stock, you're stuck. Unless you find a bootloader unlock code.
Next time search, this question has been answered too many times already.
Always read the stickies... Like this one from the general section,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2826159
?
What the hell.. c'mon man it's been like 10 years... still not a method.
You may have found some threads on here that recommend Sunshine, a $25 app that you can download (link below). The developers say that it may work for some users that are on 4.4.4. Try it. It will confirm for you whether it will unlock before you pay. It successfully worked for me when I was on 4.2.2. Good luck.

{bold in quote added by me}
Your bootloader is UNlocked? If so, just flash TWRP recovery, reboot-bootloader, go into TWRP and it should prompt you to root. If not, install SuperSU zip from TWRP.
Now, if your bootloader is still LOCKED, then you are stuck. Sunshine has not worked on ATT XT1058 that has 4.4.4 on it. (and before you ask... no, you can't safely/successfully downgrade all parts of the X in order to use Sunshine).
As for how long its been... As android matures, there are less and less bugs and vulnerabilities to exploit/hack to gain root access if you can't unlock the bootloader. The number of people capable of finding them dwindles too.

That is sad. I tried to use sunshine just now on xt1058. Says I have no root (after attempting temproot).

all I know the Bootloader can not re unlock when you flash stock firmware or update OTA. So you dont need to relock BL after do anything ! Keep Bootloader Unlocked will help you custome your phone easier with root and more !
A certain thread called "[LOLLIPOP WARNING]Those Who Unlocked Via Sunshine or Purchasing a Code from China" says the following:
There is an Enable OEM Unlock option that is appearing in the Developer Options of the N6 and MX14 running 5.1 and if it is not checked, you cannot unlock your bootloader. If you unlocked via Sunshine or purchased a code for your device from the Chinese code seller, we do not know what is going to happen wrt this Enable OEM Unlock option for your phone if you upgrade to 5.1.
Until we do, it is safest to not upgrade and stay unlocked until 5.1 drops and the situation becomes clearer.

There hasn't been any update on the thread since the 5.1 release for the Moto X, so if I were you I would wait... Sunshine has also a support line, so you could also send a ticket and directly ask if they can unlock your bootloader. I'm sure they have seen this case!
you had an xt1058 right ? you updated to 5.1, did your bootloader get relocked ?
It didn't, but I had a Rogers xt1058 that was BL unlocked directly by Motorola and not by Sunshine...
According to Motorola's website, at&t's Moto X cannot be BL unlocked officially, so that's probably why we cannot know what will happen if you update to 5.1.

unlocked bootloader allows you to flash partition images via fastboot. I have not seen any issues with an unlocked bootloader. Also, update to marshmallow if you can,,,,,cause it has native move to SD if you didnt have it 5.1.1

how do i root and bootloader unlock an AT&T XT1097 with the latest otas?

I bought a Moto x 2014 off eBay, it is such an amazing device. I noticed that kingroot no longer works. Is there anyway to downgrade? Sunshine also says the firmware is incompatible. I didn't know it had the latest otas when I got it. It's in mint condition
EDIT: It is the AT&T Variant with Security patch 2016-08-01
EDIT: Said screw it and got the Verizon Variant. Yay bootloader unlock

I think the best current root method is Magisk. But, before you start doing anything with your phone, you should unlock the bootloader, so that you have more flashing options. First thing to do is enable Developer Options, in Settings, About phone, tap Build number 7 times, go back to Developer Options and enable USB Debugging, and Allow bootloader unlock, if you have that option.
The latest ADB and Fastboot: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html
In Bootloader mode:
fastboot getvar all
Copy and save all that info into Notepad and keep it, then:
fastboot oem get_unlock_data
Copy what you get into Notepad, and save it.
Then go to Motorola's website to get the unlock code (you need to sign in):
https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-b
fastboot oem unlock thecodeyoureceive

I'm not familiar with carrier variants, but you might be able to downgrade because you can supposedly flash stock factory images with a locked bootloader. Since you already have the latest update, NEVER EVER flash "gpt.bin" and "motoboot.img" or you may brick the phone; those 2 files cannot be downgraded (partition table and bootloader).
I'm not sure if Magisk works with a locked bootloader, usually most things require a custom recovery, which you can't flash with a locked bootloader.
I will try that soon, I hope I can downgrade it. This phone rocks even with 5.1

Sorry for double post. Since the bootloader is locked
"mfastboot.exe flash boot boot.img
target max-sparse-size: 256MB
sending 'boot' (10200 KB)...
OKAY [ 0.363s]
writing 'boot'...
(bootloader) Preflash validation failed
FAILED (remote failure)
finished. total time: 0.592s
"
I can still get into android but it will not downgrade.

Magisk won't work on locked bootloader.
I also don't think it's possible to downgrade stock factory images with stock recovery. At least I've heard it can brick devices.
Don't quote me on this but OP might be out of luck. That's the latest ATT security update, which doesn't have a way to temp root so he can unlock the bootloader.

Luckily fastboot oem fb_mode_reset fixes the boot up. No brick since I didn't touch gpt.bin/motoboot.img but yeah I'm pretty SOL. I love the phone, it works great as it is. I'll just wait and see if someone cracks it.
Could you finnally unlock de att variant bootloader?
No I ended up saying screw it and got a Verizon variant since it can be officially unlocked through motorola. my puretalk sim gives me LTE still.
I know this is off topic but, is it possible to activate this phone with a custom room running on it? I'm running NXROM. I haven't activated it yet. Its through us cellular.
its now 2018 may 21, i have that same problem and sunshine didn't work either is ther
i have the same problem with xt1097 att and sunshine didn't work is there anyone that can unlock the bootloader it is may 21, 2018 and still don't have a solution. i want to keep this phone. i WANT TO UPGRADE IT IF I CAN.
