[Q] Newly Rooted Note 4 T Mobile help - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello fellas...just rooted my note 4 using odin. After rooting I tried to install the TWPR flash recovery to no evail. For some reason after downloading the recovery file, when I open it up in odin it get's stuck on the screen ( using my computer). So I cannot install it to my phone....yet. I did download ROM toolbox pro...i do notice there is a recovery option here. Is this the same thing as the TWPR recovery? Do I absolutely need TWPR recovery? really new to this so all and any info will help thanks!

Use an older version of Odin. I'm using 3.04 everyday. Yes you need a custom recovery.

Did you install Chainfire Root before trying to install TWRP. I have a short Odin video on YouTube I made for another member that you can check out. See if it helps you
http://youtu.be/hMOsw0RDeSQ
Remember that this was for a specific member and rom he was installing as far as the Firekat files. The Odin, chain root, and twrp will work for your needs. You might want to update the twrp to 2.8.4.
2.8.1 works fine for me so that what I have installed

make sure your file is a tar file and not an image, if it is good then I would try a different version of Odin as mentioned before. If still no luck I would definitely try a different file location to get the Download or a different version of TWRP. I have files that I know work if you need.
Hope we helped

Also when your loading in the pda slot it takes a minute to populate in the slot sometimes 60 seconds....

That is normal. Sometimes when loading firmware it takes up to 3 minutes or so for the md5 check to be done. Usually root and recovery aren't quite as long but still can take a min.

To answer this question, are you planning on flashing ROMs? If not, I wouldn't worry about TWRP. Some people just like to ROOT and be on their way.

Yeah I realized that when I loaded the chainfire file in odin. But after waiting 10 minutes for the recovery file , I figured something was wrong. If you can provide me with the recovery link that would be great. Its for the note 4 t mobile.

What version where you using?

Make sure that after it reboots you turn off your device. Hold volume up, power and the home button at the same time and go into recovery mode and back your device up. Leave what is x'ed off as is but I also back up the modem. Change the location of the back up to be saved to your SD card. Factory wipe, the advanced, checking off dalvik, system, data and cache. DO NOT WIPE INTERNAL or SD card. Reboot your phone. Let it sit for 5 min on the welcome screen then enjoy

Thank you for your help fellas I hit that thanks button as much as I could..lol. Okay so now I think I want to try out a rom but....I don't see any youtube videos of people showing off firekat rom for the note 4...is firekat compatible with the note 4?

Firekat is definitely compatible with the note 4. Here's the thread:

[Q] Flashing CM9,1

Well,
I have a Galaxy Note on hands trying to install CM9.1. It was with Official rom ICS 4.0.3. I flashed it without doing the 3 wipes, and after I flashed the rom i tried to wipe data/factory reset. Then the phone would turn off everytime. So, I tought it must be because I didn't flash, then I'm trying to go back to GB, like the tutorial we have in XDA, but I'm stuck at NAND Write Start! Cache.img, and it doesn't proceed, no error messages.
What should I do?
help!
was the 4.0.3 rooted? did you have CWM with kernel or did you use CWM.zip?

5. Auto reboot the device, and styck on boot screen
6. Back to Recovery
6.1 Installed Hydracore 7.0 STD
7. Wipe cache and Wipe Dalwik
8. Tried to wipe Data/factory Reset
9. Auto-reboot and yet locked on boot screen
10 Download Mode
11. trying to install GB official rom and locked in Cache writing.
I need help because it is my boss's phone. I have a galaxy note and because of this procedure that worked fine on mine I did that.
Any help to solve this hard brick?
Anyone? I need help

Installing a rom using temp cwm.zip could have done the trick to brick your phone. Anyhow. Could you paste the odin logs.

oh,
I'm not anymore in the PC where I tried Odin. But the logs were pretty usual, stopping at NAND Write Start
like this image

And I also tried to install ICS room 4.0.3. That went on till factoryfs.img, then stoped.
Super Brick? Really? How's that possible?

The stopping at "factoryfs.img" in combination with using the temporary recovery in cwm.zip is typical for a bricked device.
Please read hg42's thread for checking the bad sectors and for a workaround by repartitioning (this will exclude the bad parts from using it). But first check the eMMC with his method for errors and real confirmation of the brick.
A complete repair is only possible with a replacement of the motherboard by Samsung.

You need to update philz kernel to 3.99 or above. Then it will work.. It's safe to install the rom when you have philz kernel.

Please take a moment to say thanks and/or donate to @ketut.kumajaya for helping us out.
Thank you to everyone who has (and still will) help in testing!!!!

@ketut.kumajaya for getting this initially working (see THIS post)
@Jamison904 for giving us root
@hkjr for getting ketut to help
@k.aibutsu and @Unjustified Dev for there device source work
and of course Koush and the CyanogenMod team
@Tomsgt for the video
Link to kernel source https://github.com/kumajaya/android_kernel_samsung_lt02
Watch THIS VIDEO tutorial for a step by step visual guide for performing the instructions listed below (thanks @Tomsgt for the video).
Supplied in 3 formats:
Odin flashable tar.md5 (for first time installation)
Recovery flashable zip (requires a custom recovery to currently be installed)
.img file (for those who use Flashify or other direct methods).
Instructions for Odin: (use the ...tar.md5)
1. Download ODIN to your computer.
2. Power off the device.
3. Restart in "Download Mode" by holding the "HOME" button, "Volume Down" and "Power" all at the same time (for about 5 seconds).
4. Hit the "Volume Up" to enter download mode.
5. Start the ODIN exe program. Un-check Auto Reboot. See notes about ODIN below.
6. Connect the device via USB to your computer. Verify the device shows as "Added" in the Message box. If it doesn't show then you need the Samsung USB drivers (just install KIES to get them).
7. Select "PDA" then choose the recovery file you want to flash.
8. Hit "START". Wait for Odin to finish (~10-15 seconds). The message area will display "RES OK" when finished.
9. Wait for device to restart. Skip this step if you unchecked auto reboot.
10. Restart directly to recovery mode before rebooting into OS.(Hold POWER, Volume UP, and the HOME button all at the same time. When you see the Samsung Logo, let go of the POWER button, but keep holding the Volume UP and HOME until you see the recovery screen).
After you get the custom recovery working, you can flash the latest SuperSu zip to get root.
Notes about ODIN
--Make sure that "Re-Partition" is NOT checked.
--Auto Reboot can be un-checked if CWM doesn't flash correctly on your device. Some have reported that un-checking Auto Reboot fixes this issue. If you un-check Auto Reboot, you will need to reboot the device yourself (refer back to step 10).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Watch this video to learn about the navigation issues and Rainbow Mode: http://youtu.be/iCNdxlNzdBI
If the highlight doesn't move on the recovery menu, the selection actually does change. Go ahead and hit Power to select. If the menu goes blank, just hit Volume Up or Down to get it to reappear.
It appears that the menu navigation issue only happens when you use the button combination to boot into recovery. If you use the Quick Boot app or "adb reboot recovery", it seems to work properly.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Instructions for recovery flashable version:
Boot into your previously installed custom recovery.
Select the Install Zip option.
Find the recovery zip.
Flash.
Reboot recovery.
Enjoy your new recovery.
Flash at own risk!!!!

If you are using the recovery in post #1, then you can skip this post. This post contains modified stock recoveries only.
I recommend all T210R users should flash the newest firmware from Sammobile, ( or just use my pre-rooted version located HERE ).
The modified stock recovery zips below contain a recovery.tar.md5 file that can be flashed using ODIN. These will allow only Google test key signed zips to be flashed. There are two versions, one for the T210R and one for the T210 devices. Both versions work on my T210R, so try whichever one you feel is appropriate.

I had to flash it to see if would do on the uk firmware. When i flash on the original, it made kernel panic.
Now i can flash it. Wanna hears something strange? My CSC is still NEE(nordic)
I think this relates also to the bootloader version. I will try to build T210 kernel with LZMA initramfs support so we can create a small recovery image. Blame Samsung/Marvell :laugh:

gentlemen - i go without my kids tablet (lol they get the tab3 and i keep the tab2) for 24 hrs or so, and you've gotten to this point? awesome. goes to show everyone's skills and cooperation!
The modified stock recovery does not work for t210r. It still has navigation errors and flashing a google signed.zip(ex. Universalrootsigned.zip) has error called status 7. The only recovery that can run the signed root even in original firmware is the 2nd recovery posted by ketut.kumajaya.

It seems to be hit or miss. It works great on my T210R and I tested it with a signed zip.
I plan on returning to stock non-rooted tomorrow and testing more.

I compiled recovery kernel from source: http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=sub&sub=F&searchValue=t210 + http://opensource.samsung.com/reception/receptionSub.do?method=sub&sub=F&searchValue=exfat . LZMA support added, the attached recovery image compressed in LZMA format (smaller). I also slightly change my "universal" root, remove device model checking routine. Both package untested, flash it at your own risk!
NOTE: Kernel compiled using Google's arm-eabi 4.6, *lt023g_defconfig. Just compared 3g and wifi defconfig and saw different GPIO config (different buttons behavior?) I need T210 "cat /proc/version" output and please, a quick feedback :good:
Just uploaded the world's smallest Android recovery Both kernel and ramdisk compressed using xz compression method. Try it, may open the opportunities of CWM
Non of the recovery works in my rooted 210R. Same navigation issue.

My results from testing this morning.
I did a factory data reset and then flashed the full US (T210R) firmware to return to completely stock non-rooted status. Then I flashed the T210R modified stock recovery (that I posted here yesterday) and it worked perfectly. I then flashed the new universal root zip provided by @ketut.kumajaya (it did return one error 7 at the end, but still worked) and I was rooted. :good:
I then tried the ketut's new T210R LMZA recovery and it did work, but still had navigation issues. :good:
I then tried ketut's new XZ recovery, but got a kernel panic. :crying:
So, at least for my T210R (with the newest T201R firmware from Sammobile), the recovery in the OP still works perfect.
I look forward to hear more feedback from others users, but for now, I recommend all T210R users should flash the newest firmware from Sammobile, ( or just use my pre-rooted version located HERE ) then give the modified recovery a try.

Help! Can't return to stock

Hey guys, any info on this would be great.
Have a ATT Note 3... It boots into recovery and Download mode..
Basically, I was going to install knoxraid, wiped /system /data, but didn't have the rom file to flash.
Then, rebooted phone, and it will go into stock recovery but not safestrap.
Please help... I know it can't be completely bricked.
I tried unbrick-soft-bricked-att-galaxy-note-3-sm-900a but it fails
(also, I am sure Samsung drivers are installed)

So you can't get the phone to boot normally? What happens when you try to let the phone boot up on it's on without trying to go into recovery or download mode?
Same thing happened to me once.. just took it to my nearest at&t and told them I was upgrading to kit Kat by computer thru kies and that my daughter unplugged my phone during its process and failed and they fixed it for me..free

I believe you are going to have to Odin back with the Odin JB files. Their is three of them. I see if I can find you more info as to what to do.

That would work beautifully, but I don't have safe strap installed and can't get into a ROM...
Basically, I can get into download and stock recovery mode.

What version of SafeStrap did you have installed ? 3.7.1 or 3.7.2
Dude. Wait. If you wiped system you have no rom..All you have to do is use your computer and download a rom and push to your sd card. Then use stock or recovery to flash. Lol. I did this on my nexus once. Anyway it's simple fix.

I would say you could revert to MJ5 link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559715. Read it to the T. This will put the MJ5 4.3 back on your phone. You don't need safestrap to revert back to MJ5 method. You can root and install safestrap back on when its installed. Just do steps 1-9 if you don't want to root this method. don't worry about this download link ( https://mega.co.nz/#F!icMTnSQY!bMBNFmUnn2_K8olSTYpwIA (mirror provided by drakeymcmb) i'ts just a mirror for the ml9 fix.image ext4.

Alright, I'll follow this eexact. I am not new to flashing and ROM mods. (Been doing it since the s2). I normally would push via ADB, use a custom recovery and be set. But, just picked up the note 2… and ADB wouldnt detect the phone to push ROM.. (Using ADB device). So, anyways.... I know I have to use ODIN. I know its not fubard because the phone boots into download and stock recovery mode.
Thanks everyone, I really want to get this fix. Luckily I have a nexus 5 as well.

We can't use the old way to get into our or past our bootloaders. If you follow everything on revert to MJ5 steps 1-9 that should give you bootable verse of MJ5 4.3. If you still want root and stay on MJ5 ok. If you want the next software fix then don't root yet then try to get the NB4 patch then you can root with Kingo 1.18.

z3 compact possibly bricked, newbie with tons of questions.

Not sure if someone has the patience for a newbie here but it's my last hope. got this phone from a reliable source he bought it new tried to unlock the bootloader and screwed up in the middle of the process. I have no idea how fix it as far as what software I ned and how ot use it and which to steps to take. I tried all options in the power plus volume recovery mode, non work, here is what I get:

It looks like you have a custom recovery and need to flash a ROM. Try downloading a ROM from XDA and flashing it. You need to put the ROM on an SD card and flash it using the menu options.

don't have a sd card, can I do this with my mac somehow and usb connected to the phone?
also where do I download the rom and how do I flash it with what software?
Look in the XDA Developers forum under "Xperia Z3 Compact Android Development". You will find various ROMs in the discussions as well as links for downloading them. The ROMs well be large ZIP files. Transfer them to the phone using a tool called ADB. You can install this on a Mac and transfer the ZIP via a USB cable.
---------- Post added at 11:25 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:24 PM ----------
Google's ADB and Mac for installation instructions.
---------- Post added at 11:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:25 PM ----------
Once the ZIP file is on the phone, boot into recovery mode and select "Install ZIP". Then select the ZIP file that you transferred.
So u have cwm, thats good for now.
Download a Rom u want to flash. For example a Stock kitkat Rom.then use the cwm sideload Option to copy it to ur internal storage. When this is done wipe System,Cache &dalvik Cache. Do NOT wipe the internal storage.then flash the zip u Put in via sideload and reboot. If u done all correct System should Boot.
I think I wiped it I know I tried to clean everything and pressed every option, not sure, where is the link for the stock kitkat rom, there are so many pages and links I can't find it.

You have a custom recovery...you cannot therefore flash a stock rom.
Download a custom rom. Place it on your sd card, and flash it from recovery.
