the 3g option refers to 3g preffered and not only 3g .. if 3g is strong in your area , u ll get 3g ..
if u want only 3g , dial *#*#4636#*#* .. then from the menu select phone information , then scroll down and select " wcdma only " from drop down list ..

thanks

and you're sure it support 3g on the frequencies used by your network provider ?
An other reason which appears in my diamond : he doesn't show the 3G logo until i'm connecting to data. (For example i have EDGE logo, and after he shows H logo...)

Force WCDMA Only

Hi all,
Would like to check if anyone knows how could i set "WCDMA Only" (3G Only) on Galaxy S?
I can only Force 2G only via the settings menu, but not 3G only.
Managed to access the "Phone Info" menu via *#*#4636#*#*, selected "WCDMA Only" from the dropdown box.
However, nothing seemed to be set nor i see any button to save the choice?
Anyone happen to know how can i have it set? Or i could manually set it by applying some settings somewhere?
Thanks alot!
you cant force 3g... you would get no signal if you didnt have a 3g connection

*#*#197328640#*#* > debug screen > phone control > network control > band selection
You need to do this after each reboot though as it does not stick.
Is there a way to shortcut this with anycut?

The app Network simplifies the procedure quite a bit. Haven't actually gone into a low signal spot yet to see if it fully works as intended though.

thank you very much..i have been searching this high and low...you save my day..
Thank you so much! This helped me diagnose the SGS and see if I have 1900 3G in my area (1 bar). here's a tip that I used for quick access to the debug screen just as a trial and it actually worked
Enter ONLY *#*#197328640#*# then hit add to contacts (notice there is no * at the end).
Give it a name (Samsung Debug Screen) and tap to edit the number and enter the final * at the end.
Save and exit. Now whenever u want to enter debug mode to change the network or other stuff just type *#*# and it should appear. Tap on the contact and voila!

My operator doesn't have a 2G network... all they have is 3G. There's no point in my phone looking for anything other than a 3G network.
Solution added to FAQ
sorry to ask if this is already answered but how exactly to i get to CONFIRM my wcdma only selection? i check it and nothing happens, data connection stays on "G" symbol. I know for sure that at the place where i tested i get NO 3g signal. which means probably that i should be losing all signal after choosing wcdma only. that does not happen. also if i close the phone info app and reopen it, choice gets back to default (3g/gprs).
any help appreciated... I really need this.
forcing to only 3g is a bad move, i tested it on my n1 and i kept dropping calls once 3g lost signal.

Its available in the new firmware I9000XWJM1
Hey, its there in I9000XWJM1 and tested working great as expected! However its a beta so you may see other issues. Not sure if its there in latest stable.
Just to confirm, i upgraded my firmware to XWJM5 today, and i noticed that in settings > wireless and network > mobile networks, there's a new menu 'network mode' in which there's 3 options - auto / gsm only / wcdma only. Nice touch!
In answer to the cynics, there are times when browsing, when the phone is borderline whether to give you 2g or 3g, it does come in handy, and it's safer too, as if i have to browse on 2g it makes me want to smash the phone up!!

LOL "safer"
@OP Although 'WCDMA only' mode may not be a good idea and hence not recommended but just to confirm
my current Build i9000XXJPH have following three modes
GSM/WCDMA (auto mode)
GSM only
WCDMA only
JM8 build also have this mode. I noticed that when I flash the i9000M (bell version) previously it didn't have these modes.

[Q] WCDMA Only (?)

im using IScreamDX . and in my providers the signal always show "EDGE" after rebooting .
so, i had to call *#*#4636#*#* , then select phone information , and change it to WCDMA only . so , the signal always shows 3G
but, every rebooting too the signal always change to "WCDMA preffered"
QUESTION:
can i change band to "WCDMA only" permanently ?
so after reboot, the signal will not back to EDGE
sorry for my bad english
hopely you understand what i mean
Go to settings-wireless-mobile-nereork prefrence.. select wcdma only..
sent by the walking walkman
there is no settings like that
that is only on gingerbread rom
im using IScreamDX and no option like that

[Q] Problem with 3G data connection

Hi
With my friend purchased 2 Nexus 6. (I bought it from Netherland and my friend in U.S) In our city we have 3G signal. Most of the time I cant connect to 3G connection and only can use 2G (EDGE) but my friend at same time and same place and same operator connect to 3G!
we have the same build number on our phones.
today I try to solve my issue and got some information about this problem that I’ll explain it. Is there anyone can help me to solve it?
In setting >> More >> Celluar networks >> Prefereed network type when i select LTE a green circle added that show now LTE is selected (picture 1) but when I close this menu and again open it , LTE is not selected (picture 2). I tried more than 10 times in different places, even flash latest nexus 6 factory image and test with my friend sim.
After that I tried with *#*#4636#*#* secret code and went to Phone information saw my preferred network type is : LTE/GSM auto (PRL) , and my friend’s phone is LTE/GSM/CDMA auto (PRL).
I changed my settings to LTE/GSM/CDMA. again when i close this page and reopen it it automatically changed to LTE/GSM. (picture 3)
All of our settings are the same. but just when we dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to phone information >> select top menu >> select radio band we have diffrent datas.
My phone just have USA band but my friend has 3 more option (picture 4)!
I hope someone can help me to solve this terrible problem.
P.S. becuase of poor 3G signal in some areas I can't choice WMCDA Only option
thanks

first off you and your friend have different nexus 6. sounds like your friend has a US version and you have the international version. the difference between the two is the radio/frequencies included.

if you are sure it is the 4g as problem , you can .
1. settings
2. under wireless &networks section , select "more"
3. cellular networks
4. preferred network type
5. change selection until it is better (hopefully it helps)

Ok I change it but it only gives me these options
Preferred network type
2g / 3g / 4g lte
2g / 3g / 4g
3g / 4g
2g only
If I put it in 2g only, it allows me to make calls
The problem of the update is that I add a new option called
4G LTE MODE IMPROVED when turning off the signal
