HD voice? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to enable HD voice support on Nexus 6?

I'm pretty sure it works for me already. On Rogers.

Thanks for your reply.
I'm on Telenor network in Norway and I don't think it's working for me. It worked with my Note 3 before.
Is it any way to check if it is activated?

its all dependent on your provider. if it is available in your area, and both the caller and receiver have it included(in their phone), it will automatically use the hd calling. if only one person has it available, then it will not be used.

HD Voice generally works with two conditions
1. Phones have to support HD voice. I think newer iphones and some new androids like N6.
2. The two callers have to be on the same carrier. tmobile to tmobile. ATT to ATT, Verizon to Verizon.
Wait, I think there needs to be a third point. Data needs to be also on?

Anyone have HD Voice (non-VoLTE) working?

I'm currently on Bell Mobility & HD Voice (non-VoLTE) calling has been around for a while now. It works on iPhones & Samsung devices, but not on my Nexus 6. Do I need to change something in build.prop to get it to work? Any ideas?
Before anyone says VoLTE is required, that's simply not true - I've had that feature for years on my iPhone 5, and yes, I know what AMR-WB sounds like.
I'm curious how you can get a non LTE network to make LTE calls. It doesn't make sense to me.
On verizon you have to enable it at the carrier AND on your phone

As I've said before, I am not talking about LTE/VoLTE calls. I'm talking about HD Voice on HSPA+ which is available on Bell Mobility & TELUS Mobility.

Excited to try video calling...

I'm hoping this advanced calling video works well on the S6. I hope it works as good as Facetime.
Works very well. Better than facetime since it works with iPhones as well. Doesn't work on all phones yet but works well on the compatible devices
Sweet!!! So it's currently able to be used on devices with Verizon prior to S6? I have never seen the option.

Definitely doesn't work with iPhones. Only between Verizon branded Android devices, while on Verizon LTE network.

I don't think I am. I'm almost certain that a Verizon note about VoLTE being so great was HD voice and Video regardless of phone you're using. I'll double check on that and post if I'm either right or wrong.
However, I'm 1000000% sure HD voice works fine because my business partner has an iPhone 6+ and I a GS6 Edge and we just hung up a call that was VoLTE.

- VoLTE will work on your side if you have a capable phone, regardless of whether the other party has a VoLTE device or not.
- HD Voice however will only happen within VoLTE-to-VoLTE calls within Verizon's LTE network.
- LTE Video calling, which is what we're talking about in this thread, will only work when calling another Verizon's LTE Video Calling enabled device, while on Verizon's LTE network.
- No iOS devices support Verizon's LTE Video Calling at this time, including iPhone 6.
Works great with my edge and wife's S5! Goodbye Skype!
I tried all weekend to video chat with my mother and her iPhone6 and it would absolutely not work. HD voice worked amazingly. iPhone's just don't have the ability to do it yet.
Does video calling use data?
Yes it uses data.
WiFi?
Does it only work on LTE? I can't seem to figure out how to do it. I'm on WiFi currently.

What I have found is you need to make a regular call. When the person connects and you're talking....hit the camera button on you your phone. It will say it's requesting video call.
You can't have video calling between Android and iPhone. Both different platforms. I kept on trying and trying and I found that out on HD video Q&A on Verizon site.

Does the unlocked version FULLY work on Verizon?

I was looking to get the new HTC u11 which for Verizon can only be done unlocked but there are a ton of people having a ton of issues on Verizon with the unlocked model: IMEI not accepted on Verizon, missing bands, no cdma (so no 3g or 1x), missing visual voicemail, no immediate HD calling, no Wi-Fi calling, notification issues and Verizon essentially saying the phone was never qualified on their Network so support is limited and so will future updates to the phone like getting Wi-Fi calling working. So that option is dead to me as getting an unlocked phone without carrier bloat is great but not great if it's having this many issues.
So... I'm curious if the same thing happens with the unlocked version of the S8 on Verizon? Or is it 100% functioning just minus the carrier bloat?
Answer = no
No CDMA radio so no 3G or 1x in remote or spotty places. A tech told me.

According to Samsung.com it will work on Verizon. However, I haven't found if it fully works.
Works fine on VZW all s8's are using the same hardware, only difference is the customized carrier software.

Just like HTC - it will work to a limited degree. No 3g no 1x as no cdma radio. I need that ability so I passed.

The S8 has a CDMA radio. It is the same hardware that Verizon and Sprint use for the carrier model.
I'M on the unlocked model, notice my phone was using 3g so yes it can. For some reason my father in law was not able to add a line to our plan because my phone was marked on the account as incompatible. Was told to go get a new sim card and everything was working before and after so I'm not sure? The tech wasn't sure why I had to get a new SIM. I had popped it out of my iPhone 7 and it worked immediately on my s8. I have not found the wifi calling feature though.
Does UDP native tethering work our of the box on the unlocked model on Verizon? How about HD voice? Both of these work on my Moto X Pure, even though is is not Verizon certified.

Yes works great. I found a Cspire s8 plus that was Google locked. I unlocked it then sim unlocked it and flashed the U firmware. Only thing is no option for video calling and I haven't tried wifi calling but everything else works. I'm now using it on Verizon. Had the phone a month now.

Works fine with 3g...my office sux and my unlocked works in 3g on verizon just fine.
Best part about unlocked - no tether subscription check, so I can keep tethering my old unlimited data plan without paying the tether fee
From what I can tell, only visual voicemail is not working on verizon, but google voice forwarding is just as good. Plus it was like this on the 6p until it upgraded to 7.1 at which time it worked natively, so the S8 might eventually get the same treatment.

How do you properly set up Google Voice so that you can use it as Visual Voicemail. I tried setting it up via the old Legacy Google Voice link through PC browser. Thought I had everything working, but not sure. I may have enabled an extra step, as everytime I dial out, it hangs up and auto redials really quickly. Like it routes all outgoing calls through GV too. Sometimes it redials the same number, sometimes it's a completely random number.

They had me put in some crazy string into the phone. But make sure google chat is unchecked on the legacy site. Then click the little link for voicemail forwarding. Go through the prompts and it works fine. I had to put do not disturb so it doesnt ring through to my voice number, but it seems to working just fine. Make sure the setting on the non legacy site are all unchecked too
So far the only thing that doesn't appear to work is WiFi calling. VoLTE works but there is no indication of HD Voice on the handset.

Yes, this is because the IMEI is not "in the system" so you cannot use the phone to activate a new SIM unless you have the IMEI added to the VZW database. The solution to this is to active the SIM in a VZW handset and then put that SIM into the S8.

Hi knightsfury - Were you able to pull off getting the VZW firmware on your unlocked s8? I need the wifi calling/video calling, as well. have been trying to find a thread which explains this. Would you be able point in the right direction? Thanks!
What is the model number for the unlocked variant that works on Verizon? Can anyone link me to where to buy one?

Great! Thanks for letting me know. I got it to work as well - I have HD & Wireless calling working, but still waiting on video calling because it is blocked as a service on our account from when we activated the phones unlocked. However, a CS rep told me they would work with higher tier tech support to see if the block can be removed. We will see...
Thanks again!

Confirmed... when I am out of LTE coverage areas there is no 2x or 3x , only 1x voice. In practice this means no MMS (2x), or any other data. No group texts, fun. You can still make and receive phone calls and SMS. This kinda sucks.

Settings -> About Phone :
Model: SM-G950U1
Baseband : G950U1EU1AQG2

If you look at available firmware for the SM-G950U1 : http://updato.com/firmware-archive-select-model?q=SM-G950U1&exact=1&r=&v=&rpp=50 there are Verizon-specific ones. I'm going to go give one of those a try.

Unfortunately this means wiping the phone and dealing with Verizon bloatware... but that seems to be the cost for getting 3G back.

Wifi calling and voLTE on Att only

Wanted to ask if anyone with a USA model rog 2 tried att Sim card and did it work with att? We already know t-mobile doesn't list those options. This way we can all go search for phones that will suit our needs.
My US model will be delivered either Saturday or Monday and I use AT&T. Will post my results then.
I just talked to support again, and they said no VoLTE or VoWifi on Tmobile, Verizon, or AT&T, or any American carrier. They have no plans to enable it. The suggestion was that I leave them a complaint, so I did so via their form on Asus.com as well as Facebook.
The problem is AT&T is shutting down their 3G service this year so if VoLTE isn't enabled we can't make voice calls.

As is TMobile, from what I understand. You should be able to make calls, but it will default to EDGE, IIRC.

Ok I just tried to confirm and got info they're not shutting down 3G just yet. We still have a few more years.
I guess that's good we'll still have calls but isn't good because there's no reason for VoLTE.
Thanks to ryououki for the offer, we will await your testing and we will be here if u need any help
I seriously don't understand a U.S model, yet no volte? That's just dumb. Wtf?
I can tell you right now it wont work, Its a sick phone but I'm sending it back because of this. Asus screwed up with no VoLTE, no VoWiFi, and only a 1080p screen IMO. Maybe next time they will get it right. I hope the OnePlus 7T and the 7T Pro has it... Crazy!
Just read this for T-Mobile:
Due to lack of VoLTE support you won't be able to place and receive calls including 911 calls in some buildings and some outdoor areas where 2G GSM and 3G HSPA+ signal (marketed by T-Mobile as "4G") is too weak or non-existent while LTE band 12 is available
Great info so far , just need someone to try it with att sim for confirmation.
So far we know,
Tmobile no go on volte or wifi call
Verizon works on data only no calls or txt just like rog one. Cdmaless option unclear at this moment .
Att no test yet
I have a US model on AT&T and can't get VoLTE yet.
I talked to AT&T support and they said there's no compatibility yet.
The IMEI doesn't come up in their system as a known device.
I have at&t and a USA version of the phone, I can confirm as well that the phone drops to 3g when making voice calls.
This is really really bad because at&t plans to shut down their 3g in 2021, that means no voice calls after that. Asus USA knowingly selling a $900 phone that cant make a call in 2 years is borderline fraudulent.

There has to be options somewhere we can atleast get VOLTE working. Yes root will be mandatory, but i am ok with that. I might order one from amazon. Whats the return policy for phones on amazon? Anyone know?
I believe there were reports that VoLTE was working on Tencent models?
We really need to look into making a custom rom for our phones for the US carriers.
Did you try dialer codes *#*#VOWIFI#*#* and *#*#VOLTE#*#*
How ridiculous. This is how you ruin a near perfect phone.

I did more research, it seems to be more on the AT&T side than on the Asus side of things. Barring a few well-know phones like the Pixel 3, most BYOD Android devices on AT&T in general don't get VoLTE, including unlocked versions of Samsung Galaxy devices that are not purchased through AT&T. It looks like AT&T does not enable VoLTE for device models with IMEIs that it does not recognize (i.e. doesn't have AT&T certified ROMs), because they are afraid of getting fined by FCC for non-E911 compliance which requires the carrier to certify E911 support on all handset/firmware when on VoLTE. My guess the Tencent models with VoLTE working are somehow whitelisted by AT&T ad-hoc or they are working on Non-U.S. carriers. So it is more of an AT&T problem than an Asus/ROM issue. (though there may be ROM hacks to ask the handset to force VoLTE even if AT&T doesn't advertise the capability during protocol handshake).
Since this is a much bigger issue than just the ROG II phone, hopefully they have a plan to white list all BYOD Android devices for VoLTE when they sunset 3G. Otherwise AT&T would stand to lose a good chunk of revenue from those who migrate over from other carriers with BYOD phones, say a Galaxy phone with a T-Mobile ROM. You simply can't even offer a BYOD plan if you don't have voice call working for most of the BYOD Android devices.

I'm pretty sure their return policy for phones is the same as all other goods. I bought and returned the original ROG phone last year through Amazon, considering doing the same with ROG II unless there's a breakthrough on providers and features with custom ROMS/etc.
Yea that's pretty dirty to whitelist the Tencent version but not the US model.

Considering buying the phone, I have a couple questions.

This phone sounds amazing, but theres some conflicting information i've heard on it from multiple different sources.
1. Does the phone work on verizon? My current phone plan is on verizon, and it would be so much easier to just change out phones rather than move my entire wireless company to get this phone. I've heard that it does and it doesn't. Is it the chinese versions that don't? I'm american, so do the versions sold in America work with verizon? I went to my local verizon store, and they said it wouldn't, but the lady had to look it up on her phone but the article she saw might have been talking about the tencent version or something.
2. If it doesn't work on verizon, what other network would work better? I've heard that T-Mobile wouldn't work well for this phone, so maybe AT&T? Again, I would greatly prefer to just stick with Verizon.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE answer my questions, I've asked these questions in multiple places but no one has answered a reliable answer in any of them.

No on Verizon. Yes to tmobile and att. Chinese and international versions have different lte band support. Talk to your local tmobile and att reps to see which bands you need and verify on the Asus site for rog phone 2.
A few users here say they got it working on Verizon as a data only device, and it does support their LTE bands. For calls, they mostly use Google Voice but one buys a cheap subscription on an AT&T MVNO for calls.
It doesn't have band 71 support for TMO, which could make coverage an issue. AT&T has the best support from what I've seen.
Something else to note is this is not VoLTE certified in the U.S. It can only make calls on the GSM networks, and those will be shutting over the next few years. If you plan to keep the phone long term, expect to lose the ability to make any phone calls. You could move to Google Voice at that point, but you'd still be left with no 911 access. Asus has so far indicated they have no plans to certify it for VoLTE in the U.S. (even other region versions that do have VoLTE wouldn't be able to use it here).

I'm not exactly the best at phone lingo, i just stumbled across this website while looking up things about the phone.
That being said, can you tell me whether or not the phone is worth it? It seems like theres wayy too many disadvantages to this phone, and that kinda bugs me. I've been wanting this phone for a while, so I'd much rather get this than anything else.
If it's not really worth it, can you mention any other phones that are similar? mainly one that can emulate games just as good if not better than the ROG 2?
"Is it worth it?"
That is such a loaded question if you're in the U.S. That's something you'll have to decide for yourself based on your needs. If it had VoLTE here, then it would be worth every penny. All I can say is that for me, it isn't worth it. Yes, you get a ton of value for the phone. I'm on Verizon and would've been ok switching calls and texts to Google Voice. I also planned to keep it long term, likely after the GSM network shutdowns. I also drive for a living, hauling hazardous materials. So in my case, the inability to make a 911 call once those networks shut down is a very big concern. For me, that one reason alone is why I've decided to hold off on it.
On the flip side, if you don't have a problem with the 911 issue, or plan to switch phones in a year or two anyway, then this may very well be worth it in your case.
As for other options, I think the Nubia Red Magic 3s is likely the closest in terms of features and performance. It's not quite as bleeding edge as the ROG 2, but it's also a lot cheaper and has VoLTE calling. The Razer Phone 2 is another known option, but it's a generation older too and support may be questionable (rumor has it there may not be a Razer 3). I don't know a ton about either phone other than what I've read on their specs.
