Moga controller + 80mm fan = perfect cooling solution. - Samsung Gear VR

Got this idea from another guy (steveelliss99) over at Oculus Forum then put my own spin on it. Pretty simple and can probably use parts you have laying around the house:
1) Need a Moga Controller to power the fan (or one that has full USB out power port).
2) 80mm case fan.
3) USB cable.
4) Wire connectors (crimp style).
5) Pliers.
6) Double sided velcro tape.
7) Extra battery back for N4 (I just stopped by Sprint store and said I lost mine. They had an extra in the back and gave it to me). If you use a case with your phone, you probably don't even need an extra back as you don't need one with the case on.
So anyway, they do make USB 80mm case fans but in case you don't have one and you have a normal one laying about, cut off the connector and expose the wires on only the red and black. Trim back any others. Do the same with a USB cable retaining the large male end. Using wire connectors (crimp style for snug connection since these wires are very thin), connect red to red and black to black. Once done wrap electrical tape around your entire connection.
Now cut 4 small velcro tape squares and place one on each corner of the 80 mm fan so that the air blows against the back on your N4 battery cover. Stick fan to cover.
Now just plug the USB cable into your Moga and game away. You can game for hours and phone will remain nice and cool with no warnings or shut downs.
** The guy at Oculus actually cut a hole in the GVR cover and attached his fan with screws. I didn't want to go that extreme so I did the velcro thing.

Good luck. Here's the original Oculus Forum thread if you wish to see the other mod (hat tip to steveelliss99).

Been using this for a few days now and it continues to perform perfectly. Haven't had a single cool down warning and phone remains cool to the touch after long gaming sessions. Obviously better for the phone. I use the Samsung Flip Cover as my case so when I'm done using the GVR I simply pop the "fan back" off and the Flip Cover on and good to go.
Anyway, if you have the Moga Controller (got mine on sale at BestBuy for $24) this is a solution that really works.

Looks like only 60mm x 10mm will fit under hood.
Hard to tell without actually trying it, but looks like a 60mm x 10mm sleeved fan might barely fit under the GVR hood. If you went sleeveless would probably fit even better. Just a thin heavy duty mounting square in the middle to attach it. Would be close though.

Seems that no one sells a 10mm thick USB fan. If you don't like splicing wires you can get this adapter at Amazon, although for a piece of wire, $19 plus shipping seems crazy high.

80mm. Only missed it by 7 3/4 feet.
As many have mentioned here my thought processes are not typical. While most users are concerned with how cool they look wearing their Gear VR, I'm motivated by not melting my $800 phone. Freaky.
If you got a 60mm x 10mm fan you could actually place it under the Gear VR cover and solve the problem "invisibly".

Was only kidding about the 8 feet obv.
I like that you are at least trying alternative solutions. But I seem to recall another thread somewhere saying that an external fan did not influence overheating time. Let me try and dig it up ...

Not sure where I thought I read that, but now I'm reading the opposite Many threads reporting that even a fan in the room helps.

I knew you were kidding bro. Yeah this solution wont make fashion week but it does work. Cool breeze is nice too.

This is working for me. I took a fan from my old Google tv. It has a cowl that forces the air down. Epoxied it to a rechargeable battery pack with Switch. Added Velcro to the battery pack and Gear VR cover. Air is forced down into opening of cover.

Get the moga pro so it has A and B switch. Less problems.

VR Headset Fan Mod
I used the 80mm fan with usb connection and bought a $5 2600mla power bank battery charger from ebay, I connected the battery to one of the VR head straps, works perfect and keeps my phone cool for hours, even screen casting and heavy gaming didn't get it hot, thanks so much for this mod idea. I have pics below on how the set up looks.

GoGo Stand
Saw this thread and just had to tell you about my friend's site that addresses this very thing. His nick is Envador, and he's become very well known for his computer case mods. Aside from that, he came up with an idea for a phone/stand and he calls it the GoGoStand. you can check them out at

Wire stand variation allowing charging & headphones
Hi all. I decided to make a version of the paperclip desk stand that would allow me to keep the charger plugged in and listen to headphones. You will need:
- 1 plastic coated wire clothes hanger OR ~ 60 cm of coated wire - not too heavy gauge or it will be hard to bend.
- Pliers
- Cloth to grip wire with to avoid damage from pliers
- Paper to put template on
- A ruler and pen
Method: Rule a 29cm line on the paper. Starting at the left hand end, mark the following positions on the line - 6.5cm, 11.5cm, 14.5cm, 19.5cm and 28.5cm. Hold the left hand end of the wire up against the line and transfer the marks to the wire, including the 29cm end which is halfway. Turn the wire, keeping the 29cm mark in line with the end of the ruled line and transfer the marks from right back to left on the remaining ~30cm of wire. Use the pliers to trim the excess wire off the end of the wire. Now, starting in the middle of the wire, bend the wire ~75-90 degrees at the 28.5cm marks - there should be about a cm of wire between the bends. Next, bend the wire into a hairpin bend at the 19.5cm marks. Then bend the wire ~85-90 degrees at the 14.5cm marks. This makes two 5cm "legs" at the back of the stand. Bend the wire ~85-90 degrees back down at the 11.5cm marks. Then make hairpin bends at the 6.5cm marks. Using the cloth and pliers, grip the 4 "hairpins" and squeeze the wires as close together as you can get them. Last, grip the short front ends of the wire and bend them outwards to avoid scratching the phone. Voila - a stand that can hold your HD2 while it's charging (pretend my old iPaq in the pic is the HD2 I used to take the photos )
Note: it isn't super stable, but it isn't intended to be.
Note 2: the other stand is "one I prepared earlier" from an over-the-door hanger. More stable, but doesn't have room for the charging cable.

I just have a hard time believing that blue material is "sticky" enough to prohibit my tab from flying off there should I need to accelerate suddenly.
It's REALLY tacky. You can lift a bowling ball with that mount. Really.

clingo makes products with same sticky stuff, i have couple of their products , it does get dirty and losses its "stickyness" but all you do is wash it with tap water and its back to the original sticky strength.

I think the scoche would work great. Overkill really. I bought this tiny mount and it works great for the galaxy tab. My got it with an employee discount is the only reason I chanced it. That stick'em on it is surprisingly strong.
I have the Scoche mount and it works great. The suction cup is made from the same sticky stuff and really holds itself and my Tab in place.
There is a warning included that it may discolor certain materials, so it is recommended to use it strictly on glass or with the included dash mount piece. I have mine mounted to the dash using the included piece (which uses 3m tape) and it's solid as a rock. Was kinda worried about it discoloring my tab, and the Zaggskin that I eventually added, but no problem with either one so far. Holds the tab really well.
I used one of those ratchet clamp style window mounts for an old PDA that I had and hated how it gripped the PDA. It would also lose suction on the glass and fall off, especially during hot days during the summer, and really cold days in the winter. The Scoche mount stays put and holds the tab much more securely than that old clamp mount did with the PDA.

Is this the same as the one your using? Is there enough of the sticky material to hold it tight?
Thats almost exactly like mine. And it sticks perfectly. I was a skeptic, but no longer. honestly it could hold the tab upside down if needed.

OMG! The sticky stuff melted in my hot car and dripped down on my stereo buttons clogging them! I live in SoCal so it's not that hot! If you live in the US South West, don't buy this item. If you live in Alaska or Siberia, you'll have no problem with the sticky material melting and dripping.

i just bought one very similar to this at walmart for $20. i have the gs3 and i took of the side clips of the mount and i have the body glove tatic case which is a candy/gel caze and it sticks right to it. its ridiculous how secure it is and i highly recommend it. it is a very well made and designed piece. looks super clean also. the model of the one i have is:
IPH3GRR
though i cant find it online anywhere, only the IPH3GR which is different? the one i have is just like the one in the original post although the flex shaft is longer, about twice that judging from the pics. my kit from walmart consisted of this: http://www.scosche.com/consumer-tech/product/2097 with the exception that it also included the window mount.

Nice, usb to micro adaptor?
Doesn't make sense why they just slapped on a normal USB and not just added a small micro USB connector. Honestly they could have integrated the cable behind the screen and used a 90 degree micro USB to make a fairly seamless design.
yup!
I agree. But it's china made, and i think its totally worth it for the price.

i bought the same case and it arrived already. havent got my nexus yet but it should arrive next week. the case works with my galaxy note though. its not a bad case, but its not a full size keyboard, so the keys are a bit smaller and squished together. it has decent tactility when typing, and overall is quite usable for a portable keyboard case. it can take a while to adapt to it if you're normally used to a full size keyboard.
the only major gripe i have with mine is that the keys are recessed, not raised. so for people like me, who normally use the side of their thumb for the spacebar, you may find that you'll keep hitting leather unless you raise their hands to tap the spacebar.
i'll probably only use it when im out and about or when im at work. when im at home, i can just hook up my ducky cherry red mechanical keyboard via usb on the go for full backlit fullsized keyboard goodness. but i feel like this keyboard case is $10 well spent.
oh and the reason why they didnt have it going straight to microusb is to maintain compatibility with other devices that may have their own proprietary connectors and devices that have a full sized usb port. this way, they'll only need to give you a different adapter cable (usb on the go) rather than having to mass produce different keyboards with different cables. ive got a right angled usb on the go adapter so it doesnt look as bad as the one in the pics previously posted.
overall i'd give the case a 7 out of 10. its fairly decent quality for the price, and does a good job of turning a tablet (or a phablet like my galaxy note) into a netbook. it doesnt have the backup battery function or usb ports or tight fit that you would see in the keyboard dock of the asus transformer series, but considering the price, would you really expect it to?
How good does the case hold the Nexus? It looks to only have through grapple points, but surely the Nexus could just slide out.
I will be moving around a bit with the nexus, and have it in my bag, etc.
I would hate to drop it....

the grabble points are fairly stiff. from the way they feel, i believe theyre metal (probably aluminium as they are bendable with a bit of effort) coated in leather. The top grapple point is also aluminium coated in leather and it is also spring loaded to hold it in place and to allow it to be adjustable for different width tablets. because of the spring, the clamping force is at its peak when the top grapple point is at its highest, but i probably wouldnt rely on that alone to hold a device in place if you place it in a bag that you tend to throw around a lot. if you wrap your nexus in a TPU or silicone case before putting it in this case, then that will assist in keeping the device in place a bit better. the grip would be better if these grapple points were coated in TPU or silicone instead, but its good enough for the price.
but this is from my experimenting with my galaxy note though. according to google, my nexus 7 should arrive sometime this week so i wont be able to provide you guys with more hands on info until later this week.
I purchased this after reading about it here. I am actually slightly impressed with the idea; typing on a keyboard that small isn't the best idea, but it is also not that bad. As long as I remember to type a bit slower than I want to try to type, I can do rather well -- and the keys are a bit mushy regardless.
The clip doesn't hold the Nexus 7 in very well at all, though; one of my photos shows how you can just slide it in and out. Also, it is giant -- bigger than the Nexus 7 in all dimensions, and 3 or 4 times as thick altogether when closed (with the Nexus 7 inside.) However -- it was only $10. I might pull it apart and tinker with it later; for this price, I regret nothing, but wouldn't really recommend it.

"Home-made" Smart Case.

I've managed to get hold of a bunch of flip cases that "should" fit the Nexus 7.
Going to attempt to modify it by installing a magnet to re-create the "smart case" idea, but most likely add a few other features like a holder for a stylus, or a channel to run a USB OTG cable inside of the case. I'll post some pictures when I put one together.
Anyone else making their own?

I tried making my own case but the problem I have is that once I find a magnet strong enough to activate the "Sleep/Wake" function on the front it is also strong enough to put it to sleep when I have the cover folded to the back. I have watched a bunch of video reviews of the numerous cases with the "Smart" function and they never fold the cover to the back to see if it activates the function while you're holding it in that manner.

I will send you a video tomorrow of it when flipped back. The answer is that it does not turn the screen off when folded back. However it does not fold flush due to the design of the case. kind of a quirk and slightly awkward to hold.

Upon further research I have found that the cases online probably use some sort of "shield" that deflects the magnetic field, such as iron, (shim)steel, or muMetal.
I'm curious, where did you acquire the magnet you're using? I have tried all kinds of magnets around the house and even bought some from a craft store with varying strengths. And it would either not be strong enough or too strong (when using with the case I have).

Yeah, I tried that at the local Hobby Lobby with no such luck. It seems other people are reporting the problem with cases bought online here and here. I'm just going to see if I can find some steel or something to shield it. Thanks for the help.
Also, I wanted to thank you for that video on Youtube about the OTG cable and PS3 controller working "out of the box". I ordered the same cable as soon as I saw that. Can't wait to play Dead Trigger with a controller.
Try both sides the the magnet. Theoretically it shouldn't matter but I've had different results with different sides of a magnet.

Have a small Neodymium magnet barley strong enough to work through the front of the case, then mounted on the inside of the case in the cover. So with the case folded all the way back it is not strong enough to activate the sensor.
I really want to try to make something out of fabric and cardboard. I'm such a ***** when it comes to my devices. Even with cases I always sit them on napkins and coasters haha.
Plus I want something thin that just protects the back and has a thin flap. Nothing fancy just something that doesn't add 3x the thickness of the N7.
Maybe superglue a flap on haha. Stupid Apple and their awesome smartcase. I'm also concerned about a case hindering access to the buttons. They are already a pain to access when laying on a flat surface.

Overheating, anyone modded yet?

Have read about someone modding a battery, added a heat sink and trimmed the case to allow the heat sink to protrude out of the back, anyone else modded their setup to dissipate heat better?

Small electronics fan maybe?
I used a 9cmX4cm heatsink from Amazon and some thermal paste/epoxy, fit perfectly, and it hasn't overheated yet, just gamed for about 45 min, and the heatsink was barely warm.

Have a replacement back and second battery/external charger coming, will trim the back to fit the heatsink and have a back/battery for day to day use of the Note 4, will swap them out for VR use. I can trim the fins a bit and get the transparent cover on it, I think it'll work fine with a bit less surface area with the trimmed fins.
Am still pretty impressed with what Samsung has done, but it's not ready for general consumer use yet till they get the heat management sorted out.

I'm sure someone will come out with a little clip on "fan " back that runs off a triple A battery.
I put an ice pack between the phone and visor.

Any condensation or fogging issues? If your face is warmer than the lenses you will fog.

I was just messing around, however there may be a way that I've been thinking about that might work for everyone!
I used to have a IcePack collar for my dogs neck. It may fit perfectly around the removable plastic visor and they also come in all sizes.
I created a solution that utilizes a 50x50x10 fan with an on/off switch and made a circuit board with 3 USB ports in various locations, which powers the fan and the phone. no more overheating and no more swapping batteries or any of that nonsense. lol
I only use the Gear VR for movies. I have tried games though and they run hot and suck the battery quickly as others report. Hence why I use mine just for movies now. Still a worthy purchase IMO just for movies
Fan.
I needed the most modular setup to attach/detach Note quickly. To keep heat under control, you only need minimal amount of airflow, best directed at warmest spot, right below the camera.
In my experience, even 40x40x10mm will do. I was able to demo Gear VR for 4 people in a room with ambient temperature over 72 deg, with constant videos and 3D.
Anything that involves removing back plate sucks. Your default back plate will wear out the little tabs, start creaking if done often. My wireless charring back is harder to put on (and expensive to monkey around with). I ended up with small piece of black velcro on the back, and the 40mm fan is quick to put on/remove (connecting velcro piece placed on its hub), it doesn't need to be aligned carefully, you don't need to worry about sticking fingers in it etc. I have it rigged to USB, fed by USB port on MOGA controller or a small battery pack.
The only time when I was able to overwhelm that fan was when my buddy played Anshar Wars while we were casting the screen to Chromecast - but this is extreme. 50 mm would probably keep up just fine.
Any other solution to get over this direct problem please?
Can anyone post images of slim moded solution ?

Jeepers. If channeling that much heat through the battery to need this, that is bad for the battery and the device overall. Another reason why I just watch movies, since seems too much for the current chipset design. That, or poor power management firmware........
I'm avoiding this problem for a long time by selecting saving mode in note 4, don't disturb mode and confortable mode in gear vr. Last day I could watch the entire 3 chapter of game of thrones, and after that 30 minutes playing hero of bounds, and no heating message showed up, I just stopped to go to bed

Hey @brekstar i have a question for you please pm me you have yours turn off so people cant send you pms. Thanks
Dumb question but can you use the Gear VR without the battery in the phone and just power it via the USB cable? Would that help with the overheating?

I went "the heat sink route" as well today.. I bought this 60x150x25mm aluminum heat sink. Since the heat sink was so large i drilled a hole for the camera so or else the heat sink wouldn't be tight enough to the phone to work properly. But the after the hole was done and I was going to try it for a fit... the heat sink was actually too wide to fit between the clips that keep the phone in place.
So I had to cut of a couple of centimeters. Of course my previous camera hole had to be cut away. But after a while I got the whole thing pretty right. Now I fitted the heat sink to the external cover. There it sits quite tight so I can press the the heat sink against the phone before use.
Often I sit with one hand one the touch pad and the other hand on the left side.
But what was so awesome was that I could play for like... forever... before I've always ended up with overheating . But now the there was no heat problems, no lagging or any smoothness problems. Btw I have Note 4 Snapdragon. A new experience.. I've tried all the gfx and cpu intense stuff.. and it was smooth like butter..
And the moment the mod is pretty rough.. just a proof of concept.. . maybe I Dremmel the sharp edges at least.
On first pic I covered the contact points and the lens.
Here is the heat sink from the front in the mount:
Here is the back side with hole for the lens.. look for the drill/break removal hole
Then a couple of pictures of the Gear VR in his shiny new armour:
OMG is that Daft Punk? No it is not easy to take a selfie with Gear VR:
