[Q] Rooting Moto X - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so sorry if this has already been posted but I can't find anything. This is my first attempt at rooting. I am trying to root my 2014 Moto x. I am on US cellular so I believe the model is XT1093. Not sure though as this seems to be missing from settings in lollipop. I tried a root tutorial for xt1097 but did not work. There is no OEM unlock setting in my Developer options. I think I have to unlock my bootloader through Motorola but havn't been successful.. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Andrew

I've got the same problem here I think it's a US Cellular problem with what they eliminated from lollipop but I can't be sure looking everywhere but can't find any answers. I wish we could get some help with this though would love to unlock and root this thing.

Yea, I think your right about it being a US Cellular thing. No one else seems to have the problem and US Cellular is a unique model number (XT1093 vs 1095 or 1097). Iv tried to unlock the bootlader through motos web cite which should work but I'm having some difficulties. I entered the info from my device, it said it was able to be unlocked and gave me the unlock key. but when I entered the key I got an error. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or they are.. Still working on it..

What command are you using to unlock your bootloader with the key? And what error are you getting?

I've tried the unlock method from Motorola. It all works until it prompts you to check the box in developing. options that says unlock oem functions. On the 1093 in lollipop the dev. option is not there. Also tried the tool kit in this forum that is made for non pure phones... It works great... even tells you your phone is unlocked but it doesn't finish. What I mean is it doesn't reboot your phone and the phone is still locked. Really frustrating ? Any help or ideas are very welcome. PLEASE HELP!

Is there a way to root the phone without unlocking? Cause if we could... We could try a different rom and see if from there we could find the unlock box in the developer options.

There's no such thing as "Unlock/ Unlock OEM functions" in developer options, in any ROM, ever.
Just found this.. Apparently Nexus 6 & 9 have this additional step to unlock the bootloader. I didn't have to do this while unlocking my device whilst on lollipop. So I'm gonna assume it's possible to unlock the bootloader on your device if this option is missing from the Developer Options..
Follow the procedure on motorola's website to unlock the bootloader and report back with the error you see on the online tool, or the actual device.
P.S - voids your warranty, unless you have a dev device

It doesn't give an error per say... It tells you to go to dev options and check the box or click on the option to unlock oem. Of course it's not there so the program will not execute the unlock. It says waiting for device....

Has there been any more insight on this?

After updating to 5.1, OEM unlock is in developer options now

[Q] Root after turning on Developer Options?

So I have a Moto X non Dev Ed on Verizion in the US. Which at this point I understand that bootloader is unlockable at this time for 4.4.2. I did activate the Developer Options in the settings though. I'm not sure if doing so, I will be able to unlock Bootloader. If any one knows, help is appreciated. I've tried to do some digging to see if this has been asked before but I didn't see anything or I may have missed it. Thanks for your help.

No. Developer options has absolutely nothing to do with unlocking the bootloader.
The ONLY possible way for you to unlock the bootloader is through the china middleman. See the thread titled "China Middleman Back?".

Sprint Moto X Bootloader

I'm trying to unlock my boot loader on my sprint moto x but it keeps telling me it can't be unlocked. Now I contacted Motorola and they said it can't be bootloader unlocked because my phone is not activated... I'm using the replacement phone they sent me. I sim-Unlocked it and am now using straight talk att Sim. But I want to root my phone.

Did you unlock your previous phone? AFAIK, the phone doesn't need to be activated in order to unlock it - I wouldn't trust the Moto support people - they know less than most of us do.
You must follow the procedure exactly to get your unlock code. Confirm that you have taken the unlock data, pasted it into notepad, removed ALL spaces and [bootloader] messages, and made it into one single, contiguous string of characters. Then copy and paste this string into the Moto Unlock website.
Sometimes the website can be glitchy - others have reported success using a different browser, or trying again at a later time. If you are doing it correctly, it should work.

I did successfully unlock the bootloader on the previous moto x I had before they sent me a new one. That one was activated on sprint. And I took the same steps I did when I did my first moto x and I keep getting the error. I never activated it back on sprint because I'm not using it for sprint. And the only reason it was activated before on sprint was I brought it off craigslist. It was pointless for me to activate it on sprint if I'm not gone use it on sprint.
Another thing, how do I get rid of the activation screen that comes up when I turn the phone on.

All I can suggest is try again. Other users have unlocked phones that were never activated...heck - GSM phones don't even 'get activated'.
Hopefully your phone wasn't stolen or something...that would prevent you from getting an unlock code. But if that were the case, your IMEI should be blacklisted and you shouldn't be able to use it at all...
As far as the activation prompt, you MUST be unlocked in order to get rid of it. Then, use this custom SBF provided by ezeuba that bypasses activation. http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/rooted-sprint-moto-x-sbf-t2834891
If nothing else you can wait and hope that Dan releases a tool to exploit his BL-unlock vulnerability he has discovered. There is no time-frame as to when it might be released, though. At least you can use the phone now, even the way it is...

Has Motorola stopped unlocking the Sprint MOTO X bootloader? I've been trying to unlock 2 XT1056 phones and it says "Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking". What gives? I'm getting confused here because I've unlocked one from the site before and it went OK. Please any help, anyone?

The site can be glitchy. Keep trying (maybe tomorrow) or try a different browser. Confirm that you have entered the unlock data exactly as instructed. They have not stopped offering unlock codes for the XT1056 - they just have a less-than-perfect unlock website.

Have SiM Unlock Code - Need to flash RUU??

I have NonSense v1.03 on my cricket device. Called up Cricket recently and got the unlock code which I was unable to enter/use on the device as I never received the locked-provider prompt, only an sim icon with a lock once the phone booted up.
I thought this was due to the rom installed, upon searching on the forums, I found many threads where people were trying to unlock their CDMA devices, not much on GSM. That led me to find this post and the third post in this thread stating I need to re-lock the bootloader to flash the original RUU (RUU_A11_UL_K44_DESIRE_SENSE60_AIO_Aio_Wireless_US_1.11.506.8) file so I can proceed to enter the code and unlock the device.
So, are these the correct steps? Is there another way to bring up the prompt to unlock the device?

I don't know of any other way to bring up the prompt to unlock the device. So this might be your only solution.
Your steps are correct. Just follow the steps exactly from the posts you already found and you should be fine.

Hi, sorry that this is old, but I've had my XT1900-5 for a few months and want to start rooting it finally. But I haven't bothered much because of the issue I've read about unlocking this bootloader. What signed ROM etc. ? Any help to get me started would be useful.
no complexity, just follow the instructions in moto website , copy the code properly(use the moto recommended tool for accuracy) & you are good to go,for twrp & root see the forum.

Can we still unlock the bootloader on the Honor 9 lite?

Hey all,
So I've heard that Huawei has stopped giving out unlock codes? I tried to go to their website to apply for it (giving my IMEI etc) and instead of giving me a code it just says 'please contact Huawei for questions'
I'm trying to set up project treble with it if I can figure it out.
Thanks!
You can with dc unlocker. You Just need to pay 5 euros and they Will unlock boatloader
I got my code on 08/06/2018
In the morning at 7:05 AM IST on 08/06/2018 i applied for my bootloader unlock code and i got it easily. BTW did you cross check other pre-selected options? Like 1st one asking EMUI version? Maybe that's the reason of you not getting unlock code.
Try again or Use the mailing method(I don't know much about but you have to mail the support to obtain the unlocking code and it might take upto 2-3 days)
Just got my code for bootloader unlock directly from Huawei no issues, although i will not be using straight away i have kept it in a safe place.

I tried through their portal, and via email. This was their response:
We do apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing, however, it is our duty to inform you that Huawei Canada does not provide codes to unlock the bootloader, root the device or provides any tool/code to modify the phone internally. We kindly inform you that this action can potentially "brick" the phone or in other words, renders the phone completely unusable and voids the warranty service and device support. We have no control over how unlocking the bootloader or rooting the phone, will affect your device.
We understand that you might be able to start the request to get the bootloader unlock code from our EMUI website, regrettably, your device does not qualify to receive this code, since the Huawei Canada warranty policy limits us to do not provide this code in order to prevent future inconveniences to our consumers.
This bootloader unlocks code, it is just limited to be available for certain specific regions.
We are aware that you can find unofficial information over the internet, about how to root or unlock your phone and due to our Security and Privacy Policies, we cannot provide you these codes or tools, for that reason, we cannot assist you in that matter.
We highly recommend you refrain from taking these actions on your device.

I read the instructions for unlock of Huawei mobile, it requires you erase the Huawei id.
How does that affect warranty?
Can you reapply the old id if necessary?

No, you can't. DC-Unlocker neither autodetects the phone nor is it in the manual selection list. Also https://www.dc-unlocker.com/supported_models_1/huawei_phones says no bootloader unlocking service for said phone.
On the other hand Huawei support gave me this reply (translated by me) :
Hello [censored],
sadly the bootloader unlock code service has been terminated completely. I'm really sorry but I can't help you.
Best wishes,

Not true !
https://hcu-client.com/supported-models.php
HCU will read the bootloader code easily (at a price) :-

Read instructions carefully and follow them EXACTLY !
HCU is from the same stable as DC-Unlocker.

Thanks for this, it appears to be the only bootloader unlock method currently available. Have you actually done this yourself? Can you (or anyone else) confirm that it works?
By the "instructions", I assume you mean the tutorial at http://hcu-client.com/read-bootloader-code-huawei-phone/. They seem clear, but they don't tell you how to actually use the code to unlock the bootloader! Can someone please point me to instructions how to do that? Thank you.

Yep, I mean the tutorial.
I have used this method a good few times, all successfully .
Dc-Unlocker/HCU allows direct unlock on a lot of models and gives the unlock code on others.
To use this code, put phone in "fastboot" mode and issue the command :-
fastboot oem unlock code
Phone should factory re-set (erasing all user data) with an unlocked bootloader.

I can confirm. There's just one thing to note: Deinstall the adb drivers from Microsoft and use the ones shipped with HiSuite. Else there will be no virtual COM port and as a result the tool won't find the phone. [EDIT]And don't try to use the tool in a VM. Sadly it refuses to work there.[/EDIT]

P.S. Many thanks to @Sparkrite for pointing us in the right direction!

Thank you so much. With this method I successfully unlocked the bootloader of my Huawei Honor 9 Lite. No problems, just one oddity – the HCU software warns you that reading the bootloader unlock code will wipe your phone, and you have to acknowledge that to continue. This, of course, is not the case: it is using the code to unlock the bootloader that causes the phone to do a low-level reset. Presumably a mistake in the wording.

I used HCU to read the bootloader unlock code before I saw your message, and so had not uninstalled the Microsoft ADB drivers. I had already installed HiSuite. It still worked for me, so presumably it is not necessary to uninstall the Microsoft ADB drivers unless HCU doesn't recognize the phone.

Many thanks to those who contributed to this thread. I had no trouble unlocking the bootloader of my device using HCU after purchasing credit from DC-unlocker. At only 4 euros it was worth the money. The posted instructions were clear. Once HCU provided the code all I had to do was send it to the phone using fastboot..
