[Q] Update rooted one to lollipop - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been trawling the internet for the past day or so to try to find out how to unroot my htc one m7. I had to root it for college to gain access to the data folder for stored databases however due to the installation changes to lollipop the update is sitting on my phone and cant be installed because it is rooted.
I'm sure this has been asked time and time again recently but can anyone help please. I have tried to flash a few RUU's I thought would work but to no avail. The phone is S-on because my bootloader is 1.57 and the only way to get S-off is by paying £20 with sunshine because I have read that firewater is discontinued and does not work anymore. Am I wrong?
here are the details:
HTC One M7_UL
CID: HTC__001
Model ID: PN0710000
OS: 6.09.401.11 *Cannot find matching RUU anywhere
Baseband: 4T.29.3218.08
Bootloader: 1.57
Carrier: HTC-WWE
Android version: 4.4.3
Can anyone please help? Or does anyone have an RUU that would suit. I'm just looking to get back to stock so the OTA lollipop update will actually install. Any ideas?

Its a rar file you unrar it to TWRP/Backups/YourphoneSerialno/some date folder
and restore it in TWRP

Thanks for the reply. I'm just in the middle of downloading the nandroid backup. Do i leave the contents of TWRP/Backups/YourphoneSerialno/some date folder as is. There is files already in it? just unRAR the nandroid file in on top of that?

put them in a new folder in the same location as your old backups

I have done all the steps you said. But when I flashed the firmware, unlocked bootloader and reinstalled recovery there was no backup folder in TWRP so i created a backup and put the files in that. Then restored using that. Still the lollipop OTA update fails?

[Q] HTC One M7 OTA Sense 6 Stuck

Hello community,
first of all i want to say that i am now trying to fix my problems since the past 10 hours!
So here it is:
I bought a new HTC One M7 on last saturday. After i done the first steps i checked if there were updates available. So it was. I updated it and after it was done i checked if there is another update. But it wasnt.
So i thought this was the latest and newest firmware and i started to use it.
After a few days i wanted to have sweep2wake. I rooted my device and flashed the Bulletproof 14.2 kernel which is close to stock but with sweep2wake.
Btw i flashed the TWRP recovery.
All went perfect on first try.
On saturday i ordered a case for my HTC One M7 from ROCK with the window on top (which came on monday). I read that i need Sense 6 in order to get it work. But i was on Sense 5.5. I wondered at this point because i updated it on saturday to the latest version. So to make sure i checked it again. And yes there was actually a update to sense 6. But now the problem was that i rooted my device and got custom kernel/recovery. This was a problem.
So first i tried to get back to Stock recovery and relock the phone before updating. (Btw i forgot to get the stock kernel back on). But as i relocked the device, it got stuck in bootloader. Always booting in bootloader. After many trys i got it back to unlock and than i tried to install the update (still with custom kernel). It failed!
Than i thought that i just could restore my backup ( backup was made before i rooted my device with adb) but this doesnt help to install the OTA Update.
I also tried to restore my nandroid backup from TWRP but the problem was, after i restored the ADB backup the nandroid update wasnt on my device. But i saved it on my PC. Now the problem was that i couldnt copy any files over to my HTC M7! :crying:
I tried so many things to get it back to work but its still not working. So i cant copy over my nandroid backup or other things.
Adb push doesnt work too.
Next problem is that i cant find original RUU for my device.
Here is what my bootloaderscreen says:
*** TAMPERED ***
*** UNLOCKED ***
M7_UL PUT SHIP S-ON RH
HBOOT-4A.26.3263.18
OpenDSP-v32.120.274.0909
OS-
eMMC-boot 2048MB
Apr 21 2014, 15:48:24. 0
My firmware (looked up in settings) is: 4.20.111.21
CID: T-MOB101 DE
And there is NO RUU for this device on the internet. This made me sad. Btw after the restores the Bulletproof kernel is still on device.
So i hope you can help me get this Sense 6 OTA Update on this Phone and help to get back the ability to copy things from my pc to my phone.
If you need data from me just post the needed ones.
Now the only thing i can do is wait for your helpful answers.
Sincerely YaaOmo

The thought on the ROM was to put your backup that is on your PC onto your phone. You say your system is running but is it communicating with your phone? If it is then you should be able to run both ADB and FASTBOOT commands. If not, then you might need to install new HTC drivers.
@djtrex If you have a nandroid backup of your stock rom 4.20.111.21 could you post it for Yaaomo? Thanks!

When you plug your phone to the computer, in Device Manager you should see Android USB Devices -> My HTC. If you don't then you need to re-install your HTC drivers. If that doesn't work then you will need an OTG cable so you can hook up an USB drive to your phone to put files on it.

To take OTA's you need a couple of things
1. Stock ROM
2. Stock Recovery
3. And I believe a locked bootloader.
You cannot have anything custom at all.
If you didn't take an nandroid backup of your stock rom you will have to try and find one on the web, or maybe via GURU1.
Install stock ROM, flash stock recovery through fastboot.. once flashed fastboot erase cache, relock your bootloader then you should be back 100% stock and should b able now to get OTA's.
good luck

WIth all the conversation above, I think its now simple. Just do this in the order.
1. Copy the nandroid backup you did before rooting on the Phone, in the exact location.
2. Now boot into recovery, and restore the backup. I suppose this will also restore the stock kernel. reboot the device and check in the settings ->about. If not, find the stock kernel in the forums and flash that through recovery.
3. flash the stock recovery. (you'll easily find in the forums).
4. lastly lock the bootloader.
reboot, find for updates and update your phone. It will happen smoothly.

Hi, first of all thanks for your answer. I know the required things to do OTAs. But again i dont know why, i can see my phone in device manager and i can go on sdcard but i cant copy things over. It says "Copy pprozess canceled".
I tried to restore my nandroid backup with OTG. It was successful but i got the custom Bulletproof kernel. And yesterday i searched (like i said) for Stock ROM/Kernel but it doesnt exist for my device. So thats a problem.

EDIT2: I wiped dat and internal storage. Now i can copy over things again.
EDIT3: I did the nandroid backup but the kernel is still not Stock. And i cant find one on the internet.

I think your only solution at this point is to extract the boot.img file from the International (4.19.401.11) firmware. You can find stock firmware packages at this site. I would think your phone will boot up with it since lot of the custom roms use this as their base. If that doesn't work or you don't want to try it, then I would try to get S-OFF. Then you could change your CID & MID (if necessary) to flash the Int'l RUU. Then you will be able to get the latest updates a little quicker.

You need to get S-OFF first or the RUU will not run. Here is the site for firewater S-OFF, read the instructions and prerequisites very carefully. If you follow @nkk71 Guide for Going Back to Stock on how to flash a different branded RUU. Just stop following the guide after you flash the RUU and start receiving the OTA.

Give rumrunner a try. Some S-OFF schemes work on some phones and not others. If you can not get S-OFF, then you will have to install a custom rom unless someone can get you a stock nandroid.
Could you post a fastboot getvar all with the imei and serial number blocked or erased? Also, update your recovery to twrp-2.7.1.2 there are changes made to this version which would have eliminated the missing OS.

[Q] need some help by updating my m7

hey I want to update my htc one to 4.4 and get rid of twrp.
I´ve unlocked it via htcdev and installed twrp.
i have got s-on
hboot 1.54.0000
CID vodap120 (as far as i know this is still the orginal one)
can I just relock the phone or do i need stock recovery? (hop I´m useing the coreced terms here :/ )
if so can I follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2545227.
I remeber that I had to download some drivers when I unlocked the phone and I dont think that they are still on my computer. could someone send me a link to them?
thanks
joachim (austria)
You don't want to lock the bootloader unless you plan to reflash an RUU. with it unlocked you will just need to reflash to the stock recovery and then do your update. Are you trying to run an ota to 4.4?

This tool might be easier to use and quicker for getting the required ADB & Fastboot tools. Here is what is required to receive an OTA update. And yes, you will need your stock recovery installed. However, since you are on a lower hboot, it might be more beneficial to S-OFF first before the 4.4 update. S-OFF gives you more options going forward.

I couldn't agree more. the ability to change CID and flash any available RUU while bootloader unlocked is a huge advantage if you like to be adventurous with your devices' software.

First, read this post about OTA Updates.
Next, you need to download two OTA files from this site. The 2.24.161.1 OTA and the 3.63.161.6 OTA will be used to update your phone.
After downloading the first (2.24 OTA) open up the zip and find the firmware.zip file. Open the firmware.zip and extract the recovery.img file from it. This file is your stock recovery. You flash it like you did your custom recovery by placing it in your ADB/Fastboot folder. Here are the steps:
In bootloader/FASTBOOT USB:
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Relock your bootloader with this command in FASTBOOT USB: fastboot oem lock
You can follow the steps in this post on Manually Installing OTAs.
Please read everything at least twice. If you don't understand something then don't hesitate to ask!

much simpler way, as unlocking the bootloader deletes some files required to update, just leave twrp on your phone for the time being, and download this rom ive linked below, if your phone is currently booting up, then just plug it into the computer and move the zip file to your internal storage, then reboot into recovery and install it like you would do with any other rom, during the aroma installer, select wipe data, install stock recovery and install stock radio, upon reboot, you couldn't be anymore stock.

[Q] How to go from HBOOT 1.57 to HBOOT 1.44 in order to install Stock RUU

I have an AT&T HTC One (m7). I would like to ultimately get this back to HTC's stock version with the ability to receive OTA updates and behave just like it would if it were never modified. Several guides, post, and pages say that the only way I can successfully use an AT&T RUU file is accomplishing S-OFF since they will all contain older firmware (HBOOTS) than my current 1.57 version (I've seen some who LOCK the bootloader after achieve S-OFF and others who don't). If anyone can definitively tell me if it matters rather bootloader is still locked after achieve S-OFF, that would be appreciated.
XDA and HTC Guru indicate to successfully run an RUU I need to downgrade my HBOOT from 1.57 to HBOOT 1.44. While downgrading, can I go from 1.57 and directly install a 1.44 firmware or do I have to step down one at a time 1.57-->1.54-->1.x -> 1.44? Also, if anyone has a collection of firmware I can use to do this, that would be awesome too.
The RUU i'm trying to ultimately put on my phone is RUU_M7_UL_JB_50_Cingular_US_1.26.502.15_Radio_4A.17.3250.20_10.40.1150.04_release_326691_signed_2 from AndroidRUU (new , so can't embed the link)
After all my fiddling, this is the output of my getvar all:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2485651 here is a list of firmware
You can downgrade your hboot and then run the RUU. Make sure it's a stock hboot and NOT a modified one (it'll say either or). You can open the firmeware zips (not extract) and open and edit the android.info text file and add in your CID and model id as required if necessary
You can then flash the RUU as normal after. No need to step down hboots

Since you are S-OFF, you don't have to go all the way back to JB, you can flash this 4.18.502.7 decrypted ROM. and the instructions are from clsA:
Copy your downloaded file to your fastboot / adb folder
Rename the file Rom.zip
open a command prompt in the same folder (shift + right click - command prompt here )
adb reboot-bootloader
fastboot commands:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
wait for the Silver HTC logo
fastboot flash zip Rom.zip
the first time you issue a command to flash firmware/ruu in fastboot it only prepares the flash. You have to issue the exact command again:
fastboot flash zip Rom.zip
most times the green status bar does not reach the 100% mark. So when the output in the command window is complete, you can reboot:
fastboot reboot

This should put you back at stock. You do not need to lock your bootloader since you are S-OFF.

@majmoz I tried to flash the ROM you pointed me to, but it failed. It just said error updating <ROM Name> Updating partition details...
I am still on HBOOT 1.57, if I understood your previous comment, running this ROM would not require me to update the firmware first. Did I mis-understand that?

[Q] S-off, rooted, unlocked BL--How do I update to Sense 5.5 without losing root?

Hey guys,
Please excuse my ignorance, this is likely a very silly thread =3
I have two HTC One M7's--one is rooted and at Sense 5.5 (4.19.666.8), the other is completely stock and at Sense 6.0 (5.11.666.8). I had originally given the rooted device to my father who used it for 4 months or so while I enjoyed the stock device. When the Sense 6.0 update came out, I was ecstatic and installed it right away on the unrooted device--I love the cleaner, more animated look..
Today I took back the rooted phone and went ahead with the OTA, but it got stopped by TWRP (guess it doesn't want me to lose root). Now that I've thought about it, I definitely would like to keep this device rooted to take advantage of some XPosed Framework mods.
How do I go about flashing a stock Sense 6.0 rom on my phone that's 100% compatible? I've been searching for something that's compatible with my carrier and couldn't find much.
Thank you very much! Apologies again for my ignorance =3

You need to have stock recovery and stock rom to receive the update.
Don't worry about root, just go back to stock; receive the update then flash TWRP again.
When exiting TWRP it will state that you don't have root and ask if you want root. Just click the yes button. Done!
You don't have to lock your bootloader to receive the update.
Or
If you can find someone with a nandroid and the firmware, you could flash those and not lose root. The firmware has to be non-wipe kind with the custom recovery instead of the stock recovery.

Hey Majmoz, thank you for your quick reply!
I've been searching around for the stock recovery.img (stock Bell m7 rom, Sense 5.5 4.19.666.8) but couldn't find anything for it.
Would I be safe flashing the recovery.img file from the OTA download (OTA_M7_UL_K44_SENSE60_MR_BM_5.11.666.8-4.19.666.8_R_release_370034.zip Under firmware -> recovery.img)? Or should I stick with trying to use the stock recovery for the same version (Sense 5.5, 4.19.666.8)?
I'm just not too sure where to find it :3
Thank you again! Really appreciate the help =]

Wonderful, so the stock recovery is now applied and working as expected.
I tried going through with the OTA though, but unfortunately received a red triangle at about 1/10th of the progress bar.

I'll do a few Google searches to see how to get past this, but the phone is functioning just fine otherwise.
Xposed has probably messed around with the odex. I'll uninstall and try going about re-updating

No luck with the Xposed Framework uninstall.
Any idea how to get this working? I'd appreciate step-by-step guidance <3

There are no RUU or firmware that I can find for your phone. One option, if you can find the file in the update you might be able to transfer it your phone but it would require you to obtain root again. A second option is to rebrand your phone to either the Int'l (.401) variant or the DevEd (.1540) variant. These two variants get the updates pretty quickly and there are a lot of them around so files are easy to obtain. Their updates come directly from HTC.
Here are the steps to re-branding your phone to Int'l:
Unlock bootloader if not unlocked already!
Install Custom recovery
Download TWRP 2.6.3.3 from here: http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/m7
Achieve S-OFF, if not already!
With your hboot 1.5x use rumrunner or firewater to get S-Off: http://firewater-soff.com/ or http://rumrunner.us/
Try all options!
Change CID to the new code:
Code:
[B][I]adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem writecid HTC__001[/I][/B] <- (CID is exactly 8 characters)
[B][I]fastboot reboot-bootloader[/I][/B]
Change MID to the new code: PN0710000 using: [TOOL] MID change without ENG HBOOT | Aroma GUI
Remove "Tampered" with the Guru Bootloader Reset Tool
Download and flash 4.19.401.9 firmware; place firmware in your fastboot/adb folder and rename to firmware.zip. Ensure you have moved all of your personal items off of your phone this firmware will wipe your phone. Open a command window in your fastboot/adb folder and type:
Code:
[B][I]adb reboot bootloader[/I][/B]
After that, type:
Code:
[B][I]fastboot oem rebootRUU [/I][/B]
NOTE: You should see a silver HTC logo come up on your phone after executing this command.
NOTE: if this command freezes, just disconnect the USB cable and hold the power and volume down buttons until the device reboots. Then, repeat the steps above again.
Finally:
Code:
[B][I]fastboot flash zip firmware.zip[/I][/B]
Repeat the same command: IMPORTANT
Code:
[B][I]fastboot flash zip firmware.zip[/I][/B]
NOTE: The green bar on the phone may not go to 100% of the bar ... but If you see completed on your computer command window, wait for a few seconds and move on.
Last Step:
Code:
[B][I]fastboot reboot[/I][/B]
Execute http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/ruu_m7_ul_k44_sense55_mr_htc_europe_4-19-401-9_r_radio_4a-23-3263-28_10-38r-1157-04l_release_353069_signed_2-1-exe/ which now matches your CID & MID
There is no need to lock/relock bootloader with S-OFF, and do not even THINK about going back to S-ON!!!
Now you can receive the OTAs or flash them manually.

Do you mean manually updating the files? Technically, I still have root access. I just don't have custom recovery. Would I be looking for the file on an update.zip that's for my current version, or the newly downloaded OTA?

RUU Stucking at 5% 'Checking Headers'

Hello guys! Ive been reading you all for a couple days now because i bought myself an used HTC One M7 from AT&T. Now, as soon as i got it i saw it was running android 4.1.2 and i can't live with that. I found a way to update it thru RUU up to 4.3 (before, i S-OFF and SuperCIDed) and now i'm trying to run a 4.4 RUU but it doesnt seem to work. It keeps on getting stuck at 5% even when ive followed some people comments as installing all versions of windows Visual C++, disabling usb debugging, also ive relocked bootloader because of it but nothing seems to work.

If i remember correct u cant install a ruu while you are s-off, but the easiest way to update your device would be just flash twrp and than install a newer backup from here (in the forum you can find every Stock System as a twrp backup).

Thank you very much for your quick answer. I have applied the 4.3 RUU while being S-OFF, but i think ive read the same as you... Now, is that possible? I mean, just restoring a nandroid backup to update to 4.4 then to lolli? I mean i am not that noob regarding messing with phones but HTC ones are too darn complicated haha @saturday_night

Sure it is possible, i always did the same until HTC stoped updating this device. It is the esiest way to install Stock updates while you have done changes to the system and OTA Updates dont work. You can if, you want to, also install a MM or a N Rom (N Roms are still in development and not bug free) i´m using XenonHD (7.1) at the moment and looks really stable, just flashing the latest update from today now haha.
OMG thats so awesome! It looks like a silly thing but theres too much information around this forums and everything is so messy, even more for a someone whos not an english native speaker haha since im new to this device (i had one in 2014 for like a month but forgot everything i did to it) i just want to get it to the top it can be to try out sense 6 and all its features then ill be messing with it much more. Now that you're here and you're too kind would you recommend a lollipop rom that you liked the best? ill be trying MM but in a week or two when i get bored of these! @saturday_night

I just read that you dont need to be S-On to flash a ruu, just the bootloader must be relocked. You can easily download the first file in this thread and follow the instructions there in the first post and you should be done. http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one/general/lollipop-ruu-zip-small-collection-t3053944

You can flash RUUs with s-off without any problems, and you don't have to relock your bootloader. That is obligatory only for s-on devices. Why don't you download RUU.zip instead of RUU.exe, and flash it via fastboot?
Edit: Sorry, wrong post quoted, but everything applies to OP

I just read that you dont need to be S-On to flash a ruu, just the bootloader must be relocked. You can easily download the first file in this thread and follow the instructions there in the first post and you should be done. http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one/general/lollipop-ruu-zip-small-collection-t3053944

I believe I am not? That's lolli update and as far as I know I should be going by steps because of the hboot. I'm now on 3.x firmware, I shall go to 4 then 5 and then I can go all up to 7 isn't it? That's why i was so surprised regarding the nandroid information you gave me.

Well as said in other posts information is too messy with discontinued guides and stuff and I just find hard to do anything without compromising my phone just because of messy information but sure I will if I can't find any other solution to this matter I just hate downloading big files since my net speed goes up to 200kb/s lol

To flash RUU or Firmware on a S-ON phone:
Bootloader must be locked or re-locked
RUU or Firmware must be signed (Official ruu or firmware)
To flash RUU or Firmware on a S-OFF phone:
Bootloader locked/unlocked doesn't matter
RUU or Firmware can be signed or not (custom firmware/ruu or official firmware/ruu)
the "incremental way"to update apply only if you're flashing firmware.zip extracted from an ota update
If flashing a RUU you don't need to flash them all incrementally, just the latest one
BUT
to install a lollipop RUU, your phone must be running at least hboot 1.57 (firmware 6.xx.xxx.x) (there was no requirements of this kind before lollipop)
Since your phone is S-OFF, you could simply update your firmware to at least 6.xx.xxx.x and then flash the latest RUU (7.xx.xxx.xx)
And time to convert to another version if you don't care about the at&t bloatware (i.e developer edition which is basically the exact same rom as at&t minus the at&t' bloat)
Make sure to flash a complete firmware.zip (not one from an ota update) if you're going to do this.
btw +1 for using fastboot instead of ruu.exe. At least when someting goes wrong during the process, you can have some detailed info about the problem unlike when using an ruu.exe where you'll only get a generic error code.

Thank you very much for your quick answer! I understand that now very well, thanks! Now just another question before i proceed.... I know i have to upgrade my firmware up to 6.x in order to flash the RUU but my doubt comes to finding the 'complete firmware.zip ( not one from an ota update)' Ive found something done by mike1986 but there are no firmwares for 502 (AT&T/Cingular) devices. Else than that i just found pieces of firmware that just weight 20-30mb and i don't think thats what you mean... Also have found just lollipop ones like the one on your signature. I don't like to be begging for links but i can't seem to find it even on htc1guru.. Thank you very much and have a great day! @alray

You can use this one, its not .502, its .1540. It does not really matters since after that you'll be flashing the RUU and the firmware will be updated again to match the RUU.
If you don't want at&t bloatware you should flash the 7.17.1540.51 ruu, you can find it on htc's wesbite (google search for "HTC rom download", the first link should be the right one). Otherwise if you really want the at&t version, flash the last one from at&t.
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip Firmware_6.07.1540.2.zip
fastboot flash zip Firmware_6.07.1540.2.zip
fastboot reboot-bootloader
(flash command must be done twice)
then launch your ruu.exe or if you'll be using a ruu.zip:
Code:
fastboot oemrebootRUU
htc_fastboot flash zip <filename>.zip
fastboot reboot
(flash command to be done only once and using htc_fastboot.exe not the normal fastboot.exe)
