Thought I will share this simple and very effective method with all folks, I guess some of you might have known this method, I am sure there are other ways (via CWM which I tried few months back and ended up wiping my SD card data :crying, but I could'nt find a simpler guide like this one for "learner' like me
No need to delete any of your existing favourite apps to carve out space for a new one.No running out of memory issues.
All you need to have is:
A SD card of sufficient capacity (preferably,class 4 or higher)
A rooted phone
SD card reader (you can do the steps below with the SD card in the phone connected via USB)
A PC running Windows
BACK UP YOUR CONTENTS ON THE SD CARD TO A SAFE LOCATION IN CASE YOU NEED TO REVERT AGAIN. THE SD CARD WILL BE FORMATTED DURING THE PROCESS. NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU SKIP THIS STEP AND LOSE YOUR DATA !!!
Now follow these steps..
First of all,you have to partition your SD card.To do this,first search (via google on your PC) download & install Mini Tool Partition Wizard.
Connect your SD card to the pc (via a card reader/via phone).Your pc and the wizard will detect the sd card.
In the Mini Tool Partition Wizard,right click on your SD card and select delete. Take care that you do not mess with any other hard drive or partition on your PC and select only the SD card
Now,you will have whole of the space on your sd card as unallocated.
Right click on it and select create.
A popup will open,in that box,select the partition as primary,file system as FAT (if your sd card is below 4GB) or FAT32 (if your sd card is of more than 4GB capacity).
You can size any amount of the SD card for this partition ; this will be the SD card space in which you eill eventually store your music, photos etc. Make sure you leave about 512 MB or more space (upto 1Gb is good enough) for the next partition.
Select done.
Right click on the unallocated space and again click create.This time too,select Primary but change the file system to Ext2,Ext3 or Ext4 (Ext2 is recommended as most ROMs work fine with it)
Click apply changes and the process will take a few minutes, let it complete.
After it is done, search for link2sd on Google play and install the app on your device.
On the first launch, it will ask for root permissions and then, will ask you the file system of the Ext partition, choose the Ext partition that you created, accordingly.
Sort the apps according to size, do a multi-select and start linking them and voila, you can now Install more and more apps without filling your phone memory, thus the internal memory of your phone is increased to the size of the ext partition you create. Once done reboot the phone and enjoy using normally
Use common sense and move only apps that you have downloaded and installed, not system apps, launcher themes etc which are very much required in the phone memory
In link2sd settings select auto link for any new apps that you will install, in future.
Another super benefit ! When you turn USB storage on, all the apps on your sd will keep working and so well be the widgets
This method should work for all phones.

nice how-to mate. But may I suggest changing the title to something like "How to link2sd or install app on sd card"? I opened this thread thinking it was an how to increase the size of the /data partition

Thanks for the suggestion; I went with a simple title that people will normally use to search on Google or on this forum w.r.t this subject....like how I searched ...
But again this method is all about increasing space for the /data partition using sd-ext !

Help please !!!!
I followed the above procedure and now i have linked to my partition to link2sd app.. when i connect my mobile to my PC it is not detecting the FAT32 partition..it opens the formatting dialog box .. How am i supposed to transfer data from system to my mobile.. PLSSS HELP ME... !!

my words mean that for example i downloaded viber and before i download this program i went to see my internal storage i found it 25m.b. free on my internal storage and after i downloaded this program"viber" i opened link2sd i found it in my sd card and a lso opened my internal storage i found it became 19m.b. and i cant download a lot of apps because my internal storage of my phone became little so yr method cant benifit me. so what can i do to stop apps to take a space on my internal torage?
[Q] Media Scanner causing phone to continually reboot?
A weird issue manifested on my phone today ... the phone started, upon boot up, to spontaneously reboot. It would boot up within 30s, at which point I unlock it an pulldown the notifications screen (to see what was going on).
I saw several instances of "media scanner running" occurring - over the course of various trials I would see the following messages alternate on the top status bar.
Media scanner running... (system storage)
Media scanner running... (SD card)
Media scanner running.... (USB storage)
Media scanning completed
...while below in the notification areas I'd see the "Media scanning", "Media scanning...USB storage" etc messages periodically appear.
The phone would first lockup, then reboot perhaps 3 out of every 4 startups. Several of those times the last message I saw prior to the lockup was Media scanner running.... (USB storage).
I pulled out the 32FB Sandisk SD card, then tried booting the phone several times, and this time no issue - booted up fine, no lockups nor auto-reboots. Note though that I've had the SD card installed for over a year, and the problem only cropped up today.
Same problem on Samsung Galaxy Ace
I'm experiencing the exactly same problem on my rooted Samsung Galaxy Ace (Gingerbread 2.3.6).
Reboots with SD card mounted and working fine with SD card unmounted.
I'm using Link2SD with a 2nd ext2 partition, and when SD card is unmounted, all Linked apps work perfectly fine.
I've tried removing and re-inserting SD card and also recreating mount scripts to no use.
What might be the possible causes of this problem???
I can't afford formatting the SD card as yet, as I'm a little short on disk space. I've tried mounting the card on my PC and run chkdsk, but found no errors.
Is this problem related to Link2SD???
Please :fingers-crossed: tell me if there's any other solution other than killing my phone i.e. wiping all data.

maybe it is a problem with your sd card
try to unmount the sd card with link2sd

I really find this odd. When you link an app using Link2SD, all the app data is linked to ext partition of your SD card. If all went along right, then once you unmount your SD card, all linked apps shouldn't work anymore. This is because the ext partition is no longer available which contains the app data and files. I don't know why all of your linked app works fine. I completely agree with @aditya rathee. The problem could be with your SD card. Try to restart the phone with another working SD card and post the result.

When you format your SD card, only the data in SD card is formatted while data in the ext2 partition is still left behind. If you want to format your ext2 partition, you can do that too. To do that, goto CWM Recoverymod, choose "mounts and storage">format /sdcard (To format just SD card data) and/or format /sd-ext (To format ext partition data). Use Titanium Backup app to take backup of all the installed app data. This data is backed-up to your SD card, so make sure to copy it to other storage media before you format your SD card. Once you have finished the backup, format both SD card and SD-ext, then copy the backup data back to SD card, reinstall Titanium Backup and Link2SD, run Link2SD to link your ext partition, and finally run Titanium Backup to restore all the previously installed app with data and link the apps back with Link2SD. Hope I helped
@mahithm, I formatted my SD card, but the problem is still there. I've ascertained the problem is with my memory card. I scanned it with my anti-virus, check for any disk errors and ran a surface test with Hard disk sentinal. No problems were identified.
One thing's for sure, the apps on my second partition are working fine even the one's who's apk+dex+data are linked.
If I unmount my SD card, the phone worked an whole day without issues. As soon I mounted it, Media Scanner starts and the phone reboots.
My post on the Link2SD thread hasn't got any responses.
I can access all content from my PC (on my FAT32 partition i.e.)
Please Help!

Can you try again with an another working SD Card? If the problem still persists, I suggest you reinstall this rom. BTW what rom are you using now? Sometimes accidently deleting a system file could cause such errors. If the problem is with your Link2SD, then I suggest using CronMod script to increase your internal memory. All it needs is a rooted phone and an ext partition. Before flashing the script from the CWM recoverymod, don't forget to format your ext partition. Here is the link,

1. A blank SD card doesn't bootloop.
2. My current SD card when formatted and blank doesn't reboot automatically.
3. When I delete .android_secure folder from SD card, phone works fine.
4. I don't think I deliberately deleted any system files.
5. I haven't changed the ROM. It's the stock ROM of Galaxy Ace.
6. Is it possible that some .asec is interfering with some system file
7. I have ruled out Link2SD as the cause, even deleting the app didn't make a difference.

Can you try reinstalling the stock rom? Don't forget to Wipe data/ fatcory reset, Wipe cache partitions, Mount and Storage> Format /system, Wipe Dalvik cache and Wipe battery stats from CWM Recoverymod before you flash stock rom through odin. Also format both SDcard and ext partition. Use Titanium Backup to take backup of all the application data. Don't install Link2SD and lets see if the problem still persists. Do post the result. Hope I Helped
I have a D415 that I managed to get rooted and get CWM installed. On my D415 (as well as my last phone a P569) I had the same nagging issue. In order to increase available space I installed Link2SD and formatted my SD card with a fat32 and ext partition (ext2,ext3,ext4 tried them all). Everything seems to work fine with one nagging issue. I always get a message about "no /sdcard/.android_secure found" whenever I created a nandroid backup. Restoring the backups always seemed to work fine except when I would replace the SD card with a new one. I partitioned/formatted a new card with a fat32 and a 2gb ext partition. Then copy a nandroid backup that I made before the change from my PC to the "external_SD" card, then boot into CWM recovery and install the backup. I would get the typical messages about skipping sd-ext and android_secure. Then boot normally and discover all the apps that I linked to the SD card with Link2SD would not be there and I would have to reinstall them with Titanium backup and relink them with Link2SD. I've been looking through various forums but I can't seem to find anything describing how to make a backup of the files that I linked to the SD card with Link2SD. I've been to the Link2SD site and read through the FAQ but this isn't addressed. If there is a way to do this and can someone point me to it. Thanks in advance.

i have xperia sp 8 gb!! installing few app takes lot of space .. with the new feature in marshmallow (installed cm13)
where we can use sd card as internal memory and move app + whole data. however if we use that function the data is encrypted and we cant flash anything using twrp or even cant install the updates.
so i wanted to create a partition where 25-50% can be used as internal and rest as portable!!
i have tried to create partition using TWRP .. result failed.. nothing really happened ,, tried both ext3/ext4 and after reboot the sd card detected has to be used either as portable or internal
then i tries app2sd and link2sd both are again not able to create partition.
app2sd has option to create adoptable storage which it actually created and i could see 25% as internal and 75% as external however when i tried to move app it was just like move to sd card.. where app was moved to adoptable storage and data still remains in internal memory!!
anyone can please help... in short i want to use my sd card both as internal and external storage!!
internal : to move big apps with data
external : so that i can flash apps/ install updates!!

Are there any ROMs or kernels for the G7 plus that's allow for functional adopted storage? I've tried stock and RR, and you can get it to format an SD card as internal if you install one with no partition table, but the file system will not hold "state". All media and files on the adopted storage become corrupted after reboot.
My advise is not to use this function anyway! The only advantage of adoptable storage is that apps can store their data on this storage device. But there are several disadvantages. Many users lost their data and/or have other problems.
Adoptable storage has worked perfectly for me on my G6+ for several years now. I regularly travel in countries where electronic searching is allowed both at airports and by law enforcement. There is no way I will keep data on a phone that cannot be encrypted
I haven't found a rom, but I have found a workaround. If your data is corrupting and being weird, u can unmount the sd card and then remount it and the adoptable storage will function normally for a while after that.
I've tried this, but same behaviors before. And data you put on the SD card will not hold state. It corrupts upon first reboot.
I found this out after a reboot or two but forgot to post an update. I have found that Apps2SD (https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/apps2sd-partition-sd-card-link-apps-to-t3122919/)works great on these devices on all the ROMs I have used as long as it is rooted with Magisk. You have to manually set the su.d/post-fs-data.d/service.d path in app settings to /data/adb/service.d to get the mount script to work and use the format sd tool it comes with to split your sd card partitions into two separate fat32 and ext4 partitions. Anyway, there is more help in the thread later on the page count. Good luck!
