Google Nexus 5 software updates vs. iPhone update speed

iOS 7 was released on September 18, 2013.
7.0.1 came out September 19.
7.0.2 came out September 26.
7.0.3 came out October 22.
7.0.4 came out November 14.
That's 4 updates in 2 months. Three in the (approximately) first month.
KitKat came out October 31. No updates so far, over a month in.
I understand that you might respond, "well iOS needs so many updates because it has so many bugs." And that might be true. But unquestionably, KitKat has some things that could be adjusted (at a minimum, it'd be nice if they tweaked the volume a little bit on the N5). And surely there are various bugs that could be fixed.
Is this pretty typical? I can't help but wonder why Google takes so long to push out updates, even if they are minor. I'd rather get a couple of minor updates over the course of a month or two than to have to wait 3 or 4 months for a single, bigger update.

A couple of those updates were for security issues that HAD to be updated quickly, considering the bad press they were getting.

^Sums it up, it'd be a big deal if they were major updates like 7.1.x etc. but like @speedyink said they were just security patches

i dont get these android vs ios threads. if your unhappy, go back to ios then. you dont need to keep looking for reasons.
Google does it this way because it works for them, i honestly dont see a problem with it. whatever bugs that are on stock are usually fixed on a custom rom. Try doing that with an iphone

Not trying to hate on custom roms, but most of them have their own bugs and are not for the everyday user. Some might say the N5 is developer phone but it works on Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile and I know Sprint is selling it on contract to average users.
The main issue with the N5 is obviously the camera. I can't even use some apps anymore and the camera breaks to a green screen while using those apps. I know the fix is coming, but it's kinda annoying to have to reboot my phone every 30 minutes to be able to send snapchats or use the camera again. Also hearing so many stories about people returning an otherwise great phone because they cant get the camera to work. So I guess I semi-agree with the OP that Google needs to fix some things now, but can also understand why they haven't yet.

I think all he was trying to say was that he wished Google was a tiny tiny little bit like Apple sometimes. If this was the IPhone 5 they would be getting murdered by the media. Not necessarily unhappy with the phone or Google's services, just patiently waiting for a fix on a few crucial things.

Updates will come when they're ready. I know I don't want an update for the sake of getting a update. Too many times I've seen stuff rushed to fix something and break many other things.

Bro, that's an example of something you don't say here at XDA. "Most of them have their own bugs" well duh! It's been about a month and ROMs take a few months to iron out all the issues. But when that stable or RC CM/AOKP/Beanstalk/Slim build comes out, there's no complaining. Simply good features and good speed. :victory:
Why shouldn't Google market it as a good smartphone for the average user? Just because it's a Nexus doesn't mean its destiny belongs at XDA...it's got good speed, stability, features and screen. What else could you wish for at the price of $349/399 or $450 on carrier?
It's not like iOS 7 was good upon release. You wanna see the lag on my iPad Mini that wasn't fixed until 7.0.3? Bro, there's no reason that they should be releasing anything that lags that hard on a major device that still constituted a major part of their lineup at ios7 release; simply unacceptable. The updates were methods of solving problems such as lag (it's much better now with Reduce Motion and Increase Contrast).

A software update won't magically melt the extra glue in your N5. It was already determined that speaker sound required a hardware modification. There is a fix for volume on the N5 already, I think Google is aware of this and might put it in 4.4.1.

1) I didn't say custom roms don't get the bugs iron out i've been rooting/flashing for 4-5 years now and have used some amazing roms. I said they were not for the everyday user and if you don't know what you are doing it can be a hassle.
2) A lot of people argue that the Nexus 5 is a developer phone. I didn't say it was destined for XDA I almost said the exact opposite since average users are buying it.
3) Never said IOS 7 was good/bad nor have I ever used IOS. In your comparison though, lag vs. the entire camera not functioning.
4) I know how to search im just more of a lurker... and I've used that camera app before. The problem is not the quality of the image/camera and that is what that app is aiming to fix. I actually think the N5 is able to take great pictures in most situations. The problem with the camera is that while using apps that utilize the nexus's camera it will become unusable giving you a black/green screen with noise making the camera unusable until you reboot the phone.
I know the camera issue does not affect many users who do not use apps like snap-chat and a few others (or I think using face-unlock will also trigger this) but a lot of less tech savvy have been returning the phone thinking it doesn't function properly. For tech savvy users like us we know the new camera API is coming and can wait it out.
Also, they are exclusively featuring camera on the N5 in all of the commercials I have seen.
Funny story to go with this also. My GF suggested that I need to get a new phone since snap-chat doesn't work anymore... I just sort of laughed and said no way! But just thought it was an interesting perspective.

So who are these people returning their nexus 5 because of the camera? Are they in the n5 v g2 thread?

I actually get that issue quite often. Occasionally its just a black screen and gives a camera error. Doesn't fix itself until the phones restarted. Stock / Rooted.

There are FAR more iOS 7 users than there are Android 4.4 users. When 400 million iOS 7 users have an issue—92% of all iOS users out there—a lot of people are affected. When 1 million Android 4.4 users have an issue—1% of all Android users out there—this is a very tiny portion of the Android ecosystem and Google does not feel they need to resolve issues timely. You can blame Google and the entire Android ecosystem for this.

Not whining and I didn't say that i'm unhappy with the device or want to return it if that was directed towards me, just saying Google needs to fix a few things.

What rom do you have flashed?

They need to get an update for the n5 quick, to fix the 'bog roll' quality speaker which somehow manages to vibrate the phone more than the actual vibrator does.

There is a 4.4.1 update rolling out shortly. No link, but easily googled.

It should probably be mentioned that Google have decoupled several apps from the core OS that in iOS would require an OS "update".
For example, Chrome is now a separate update whereas Safari in iOS is not. If security updates to the browser are required, Google just updates Chrome in the Play store, whereas Apple would release an OS "update" which may in reality only affect the browser.
I'm not saying that is always going to be the case, but it may explain some of the timing "differences".
EDIT: Here's a good example, from the iOS 7.0.4 update:

Just a video. Very buggy and laggy atm.

I've never had strong feelings about TW one way or the other, but that may be because I just picked up my first Samsung phone a few months ago. I'm really looking forward to seeing the changes in L.

They probably will..... 8 months from now....but I'll be right there with you bro in the nexus 6 forums I just can't wait that long if I already waited so long for aosp on this phone, I just gotta see the phone in person, I never really liked the note series due to its massive size, but if It feels comfortable in the hand I will definitely make the jump, if not nexus 5... S5 had so much potential to be a better phone but with all these damn bugs (battery drainage on idle, audio issues when recording a video, choppy video for 1080p, whatsapp mic still sounds too low)...and Samsung not releasing the right source codes this phone was a disaster... Nothing compared to the s4 forums... *sigh's*

I'm just bothered that all this waiting is always for nothing, and we paid a valued amount for a great spec'd phone but we can't get the best out of it, for f$!# sake is processor (801) is newer than the nexus 5 (800 chip) but the N5 is faster. ..WTF!!! so the reason they feed us this crap is because we are OK with it, so Samsung just keeps screwing us in the a$$ cold, how we pay more for a phone that isn't better than a nexus, and it could of all been better without that TW S!#/ they put in there.... but... we're OK with it... right? Because it's just a phone... right?
That's not the case with nexus phones because they rooooock!!!!! Plus it's made by a younger generation (google)

i find the s5 on touchwiz fine. some apps i personally dont like the look of so i replace with stock kitkat ones. but i dont have any slowdown

I don't like TW eighter, but to sell my phone for it ? Don't think so....
I just installed Go Launcher Ex (my favorite launcher for years already) and remove all the bloatware with Titanium Backup which I don't need or want.
Result : clean rom to my likings

So why did you buy an S5 if you knew you hated TouchWiz and the "lag" (I don't even have any lag on my S5, and my last phone was a Nexus).
Do you people buy Samsung phones just to complain about them? Buy a different brand, it's really not so hard.

protip: Open S voice, go to settings, disable home activation, disable S voice. Congratulations. You have the smoothness of an AOSP ROM without the stupid bugs.

Got a Note 3 with close to stock ROM. Modding it made it feel and look really not like TouchWiz. No lag, no s**t.
Imagine the Google Launcher when it gets L updated.
Imagine what Wanam's wonders are going to look like after he gets hold on L TouchWiz.
Also, reports claim that even the dev preview of L gets better battery life on the Nexus 5, so AOSP is going to be even better.
Calm your whatevers-that-make-you-mad and be happy that you have first world problems.

Roll out of Lollipop for 910U (And a few others)

Thank you Samsung for letting down the 910U. There are absolutely no excuses to take so much time to update all variants. Too many variants and inability to maintain them... Never expected releases to come as fast as on my Nexus 5, but that bad is really a shame (Other manufacturers have already updated their flagships)
With all these different models of the same phone, Samsung has managed to create an extra fragmentation level of the already fragmented Android. Amazing.
And I don't want to hear that is maybe because we'll get a newer version than 5.0.1 or an improved Touchwiz (Like was speculated as an explanation for the very slow initial rollout of Lollipop). Most likely well get finally 5.0.1 when everybody will be on 5.1
I came back to Samsung after a few years (My last one was a Tab 7.7). Definitely amazing hardware each band every time. The software side (incl speed of new releases) is still a shame.

Have to agree on the hardware front. Amazing, sleek and sexy. For the OS part though it's definitely a let down. I wish they would just apk all of their bloat and just let us use it on any non tw OS. No hidden or private api baked into a slow ui. My sister is running a S4 and laughing because she has LP and I can't even get it. Hell it's not even announced for my version.

i speak for 910G users and its a pathetic logic for 910G as well..... 910F got the update so why dint the 910G......it will be good if samsung can get their **** together and concentrate on a single processor and give its users what they pay for

I wonder if they limit variations because there's not any more letter in alphabet or what?

pretty crap when the F and G use the same hardware but different bootloader and modems - would have taken very little time to get a global release for the two models at the same time.

Calm Down untill the Final Release
SM-N910C user here, I feel your pain But you guys should not forget that the Lollipop releases for Note 4 are not final , are more like test builds thats why it is not availble outside of the world except Poland. In essence , more than 90% of Note 4 users didn't receive Lollipop. I have installed Lollipop and I am pretty confident that it needs some tuning and fixing before the worlwide roll out so hopefuly every use gets straight the Final build in some weeks time and not a test build like some lucky N910C-F users!
The Real let down would be in the case where the Final Worlwide release is ready for some variants and not for everyone or the others who didn't receive the final update and receive a test build like now Here there is no space for excuses

Thank you for alcibiade for another whiner thread. For God sake get a life, the note's 4 lollipop update isn't that earth shocking. In general KitKat works as good (or some respect even better) as Lollipop.

Thank you too rj3005. Now you (unwittingly) bring a bit more to this thread. I wasn't even complaining yet, but indeed, contrary to the Nexus Series (I own a 5 and a 7) the Samsung version of Lollipop is indeed not so much of a change compared with KitKat. Less material design, still lags here and there (I honestly don't know since I unfortunately still do not have an update for my 910U............). Samsung has amazing hardware (And that s why I picked the Note 4) but Software wise.... Honestly....
Anyway let s hope the S6 brings finally a decent Touchwiz we may all benefit from..

Its not about getting life or what, but put urself on our shoes. What would u feel if everyone's got the lollipop amd u were left alone not having it? Good or bad is another matter. Being up to date is what xda is all about. At least that is why i joined xda.

I am totally with you, i know samsung for long time, and i know that they will not release the 5.1 for the 910u version because we didn't get the 5.0.1. in fact, we will get the 5.0.1 when the C gets close to the 5.1 . i am not mad or saying this because i hate samsung, i replied to tell you again Don't give your hopes on samsung to give you something that you want. I can tell from now that we can get the 5.0.1 version in 15 days from now, but without any change of the C version and maybe more buggy than it .

Again the hardware on Note 4 is amazing (That's why I bought it over the Nexus 6). Hopefully Samsung will get its act together and deliver decent software (from an AOSP perspective) KINF OF on time....

I agree i purchased the 910U over the 910G in australia and now i wished i got the C. Im sure when lollipop comes finally for the U porting C roms will become the norm and we'll keep up to date. God knows as well as us that samsung wont keep up..

To be fair the issues encountered with the first versions of Lollipop should be put to the credit of Google. On that they screwed up massively and even the Nexus line suffers from it (I also have a Nexus 5 and a Nexus 7). It's hard to blame the phone makers on this.
Nevertheless time passes by, most of flagships have been updated to Lollipop and... quite a number of Note 4 haven't. Samsung weakness on the software side is blatant (while they indeed design excellent hardware, the Note 4 and the S 6 are very good example of this)

Reboot your phone. All the bloat is in the ram and it shows. It's embarrassingly ridonkulous. I bet battery life would improve close to an hour of SOT over a day's worth of use IF IT WASN'T USING CPU ALL THE TIME TO RELOAD APPS AND REARRANGE BLOAT.
I am disgusted by you Samsung. 3GB of RAM. 3GB!!! Sad to say but I think the note 5 isn't even on my radar. You took removable batteries and expandable storage away from us. Not to mention multi tasking. And you didnt fix it with the 5.1.1 update. Not even close. Worst $700 I spent.

I agree with the whole memory thing. It seems Touchwiz is still pretty bloated. Went into running process and showing all the cached ones the phone is using like 2 GB running hardly anything but Touchwiz and a few apps. Even with this issue its amazing that this phone is still far and away the best atm.

I agree 100% and to top it all off theres no damn cm 12 roms!!! Wtf developers are sleeping on this $700 phone, this saddens me to the max, i am so close to taking on the moto x 2014 deal for $400 stock android 64gb, its not like the 64bit processor made an effin difference at all... samsucks can go screw themselves.. im stuck with this shiity phone... i can only imagine how crazy cm12 would have been on this phone... but them devs too busy on cheaper phones.. with all them donations cm team should be able to buy the phone to work on it...da faq?..smfh im out ragged!

People who build CM roms don't owe any one of us a ROM for the device. If you really that unhappy with the device then sell it simple as that.

I'm sure you've noticed, the dev scene is gone. Just like ios got a lot of features from the jailbreak tweaks, Android has gotten a lot of features from rooted roms. Honestly, what do you need a custom rom for nowadays? Unlimited hotspot? That's really the only feature left for them to make standard.
And don't say it's because you want a vanilla phone. If you want vanilla, don't buy an S6. Buy a nexus. The CM Team has all but dissolved.

Dude, dude, dude, listen here... nexus 5 and or 6 does not have a 64bit processor...and 2nd can u imagine cyanogenmod/stock android runnin on a 64bit processor? It would be as fluid as the iphone... so all the guts inside the new s6 are for nothing....because they arent being exploited...their sitting inside my phone for nothing...

I wouldn't say they are all for nothing. The performance on the phone is the smoothest and fastest I ever had on any phone. The battery life for a device with its battery size and screen resolution is very good as well. The only bone I have to pick is just the memory management. I wonder how the international releases of 5.1.1. will be. I'm not expecting anything really different but you never know. I'm still enjoying the experience of this phone and even if I wanted to get rid of it there isn't anything out there at the moment that I would rather have.

Smoothest and fastest on any phone? Let me introduce you to 5.1.1 on my nexus 5 and HTC one m8gpe. Nexus 5 is about same in performance, HTC one m8 is noticeably quicker but neither have memory management problems with 32bit CPU and 2/3GB of RAM.
Not only did Samsung drop the ball but they lied about less bloat and just hid it in the RAM. My note4 isnt as smooth but it sure as hell manages memory a lot better and there is room for improvement at that. Many of us feel burned at the potential wasted at the expense of Samsung's poor coding, selfishness and lies.

Essentially, what I'm reading is that you bought an S6, to not have an S6. The Nexus 6 may not have a 64-bit processor, but it is one of the smoothest running phones in existence. If it's that important to you, learn to build your own ROM. Be the dev you want to see. If it's not that important to you, don't complain about the phone you purchased. You could've waited for the next stock andrid phone.

@Slicktune you bought the wrong phone. You've been *****ing about CM since a few days after the S6 dropped. We'll be lucky if we see CM before the end of the year, realistically. I'd say there's a 70% chance we'll never see it. So, either suck it up and deal with TW or bounce to the next device.

You're speaking to someone who had both of those devices. Memory management was superior on 5.1.1. on the Nexus but this phone beats it in performance and battey.

Why is samsung so SLOW with Android 6.0 update?

Mainly a rant thread, but seriously LG G4 already getting AD6.0 and now i've read HTC M9 getting 6.0 and A9 getting 6.0.1.
Sammy sold the highest android phones number, and yet they so slow in providing updates, they start testing beta in next month only.

Because Samsung has touchwiz and has to make it perfectly compatible. Takes a while.

That's not an excuse, HTC M9 getting 6.0 tommorow and A9 getting 6.0.1, G4 already getting 6 and G3 started to get it today... Samsung is soo late only now they releasing beta 6.0 to certain GS6 devices.

Yes, it IS an excuse. It is just one that you don't like.
Samsung is updating at the speed they want. I would fully bet that they were intentionally waiting for 6.0.1, as 6.0.0 likely had some issues they wanted to see fixed.

I hope it's true and they learnt from their mistakes, i remember a lot of GS5 users complained about lollipop more than usually, same with 4.3 that was one of the worst updates sammy ever made.

For me, I would rather get a solid update than the fastest update.

That's i hope, the reason for beta testing and delays.

Samsung policies are stupid..They wont release Marshmallow until S7 is out.. ultimately this would be one of the selling point for S7.

If that would happen, that could backfire so fast specially since 6.0 was released to all other devices. heck G3 and GS5 released same year, yet G3 already getting android 6.0, idk if galaxy s5 will get it, and if it will probably Q2 2016... Samsung support is lacking and need to be changed, but since they beta testing android 6.0 now, i hope they won't use it as an excuse to "delay" it to until GS7 launches.

These are the features needs to modify almost everything to provide support with new os and can only be understand if you have developed something.

They can split the updates to two parts, the main Android 6.0 base update without updating the minor stuff like s health, themes, and just make S Pen compatible, then after short while release a package of updates android 6.0 updates, idk if it possible, but sure as hell Samsung could be faster, again if they put 6.0.1 with as little to no bugs, then i prefer it over rushed release.

why don't Samsung let it customer beta test the new marshmallow update? iphone lets its customer beta test before full release...

They are for the s6 and edge+(UK and south korea). We'll see it in due time.

I think this time a little bit different. They seem want to improve their Rom quality, do it more carefully. Years ago I realize that Sam S series always be first to update because they are flagship and almost no special features like Note series. Absolutely I agree with you about Sam Roms are very different to HTC, LG.
But as Note 4 users, I was very angry about their update: no theme, no new features, no change on S Pen function, quite bad battery life.
Anyway, Samsung as most profitable Android OEM, have to change some points, do something better about update and Rom. We pay more, they do more better!

If you want fast updates get a nexus and keep it moving...

I want 5.5-5.7" phone. Nexus 6 and 6P fit need but their battery life not so good. Note 5 just enough for me fullday usage only after extreme optimized/tweaked.
