[Q] Phone mount for cycling - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was thinking of using the phone when cycling to track my route and so that I can see my position. I will not be going off-track often and I don't expect to be falling off the bike often . Could you recommend some good case? Thanks

I'm using this one for the past 2 years and it's really great:
http://www.topeak.com/products/bags/smartphone_drybag_5_wt
It hosted my Nexus 4, then my Z1C and now my Z3C . The great thing is that it has a clip on the back that you can attach to the regular clothes too, so I can use it also if I go hiking or rowing.
You will have to use a bluetooth adapter during those times because the phone will be enclosed 100%.

super cheap yet very solid and functional:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hot-Phone-H...896?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3aa4bf55a8

I'm a bike commuter and like to have my phone on my handlebars every day either as speedometer, clock or music player. I've used a number of different mounts with varying degrees of success.
Right now, I'm a huge fan of QuadLock (quad lock case dot com) . For the Z3c, you'd need to get a secure 3rd party case case (not sure which would be the most secure, maybe the Ringke Fusion? or Terrapin? I dunno), then get the Bike Kit which includes the bike mount and the universal adapter. I've used this setup with three different phone/case combo's thus far and each has been rock solid.
I can't comment on the earlier poster's ebay mount, but I can offer some advantages of the Quadlock over the Topeak bag. A huge benefit of the Topeak is that it's a dry bag, protecting your phone from the elements. But, that's not a concern with the Z3c since it's water/dust proof. And, the downside of the Topeak is that it can overheat, they warn about this on the Topeak site, and I've experienced it with other enclosed mounts. Also, with the Quadlock, you will still have access to charging (depending on your case) either from a battery pack or a hub gen if you have one - I've done both.
The downside of the Quadlock is that it's $40 USD. But, being the most reliable one I've tried thus far, I don't have a problem with that cost.
HTH,
Jack

Hey Jack, I'd like to get your opinions after using Quadlock after a year. I'm looking for most robust option. Quadlock has dedicated products for iPhones and some other devices but they recommended universal adaptor for Z3C. But I don't trust the adhesive that will be mounted on Z3C case. Have you had any issues with this? I suppose you have used Universal adaptor as well.
I can also buy a more up-to-date and compatible product that supports charging while using the device. I have a Roswheel front bag on frame for Z3C. Basically I'm not happy with using it. But I can use it to house my charger and from there an extension of charging cable to Phone at handlebar could do the trick. What do you think? Of course this is a rare case scenario. I'm not a great fan of cycling. Only joining weekend activities. Usually they take only 70 miles.

I would also appreciate a little update. I also have something similar to the bag mount. Quadlock looks really cool, but I can't justify the price.

If your headset stem is square-section, the easiest way to mount your phone is with a simple loop of elastic. Starting with the loop under the stem, pull up loops along the left and right sides of the stem. Then thread your phone through those loops so it's sitting on top of your stem. Our phones are waterproof, so no need for a case. They also have those tiny wrist-band strap holes at the bottom which you can use to make a secure back-up to stop the phone hitting the floor if the elastic fails.
I cycled across Europe like this last summer - absolutely perfect tool for the job.

Suction cup mount

Can anyone recommend a suction cup mount that I can use in the car? It doesn't have to be made specifically for the MyTouch, I just want to be able to see the navigation while i drive instead of constantly looking down at my cup holder.
I'm in the market for one too. I would like to buy it as a christmas gift for my Boss.

i third this!
I am using this one here:
http://www.amazon.com/Holder-T-Mobi..._1_3?ie=UTF8&s=wireless&qid=1259151227&sr=8-3
It gets the job done. The suction works just fine, have had no instances of it coming off, and my phone has never come out of the mount. The only thing is, be careful with the ratcheting mechanism... when I first got mine I forced it a bit hard without pressing in the release button, and now it doesn't always stay centered and skips teeth sometimes but still works.
It has an open space in the center of the bottom so you can still connect power/audio. It holds the phone well, has rubbery foam on the side arms to grip the phone. For $10 its worth it, IMHO.
Head over to your local large electronics retailer (Best Buy, Future Shop, Radio Shacketc) and look in the GPS and IPhone sections. I bet you could also order it through Amazon.
I have seen the same mount under multiple brand names there. It is around $30 in Canada, so figure $20sh in the US. The one I have is called the "Grip-iT" by Scosche. Allows the phone to be held vertically and horizontally, has a longer flexible neck to position it and a really strong suction cup mount. Also comes with an adhesive mount disk if you have to mount it that way (some places don't allow windshield mounts).
I use it mostly in a fullsized pickup with a stiff suspension and have had no problems with it coming loose.
The one I have is this one:
http://www.scosche.com/products/sfID1/337/sfID2/344/productID/1593
I would stay away from this one as it is a PITA (at least in my GMC truck, which has fairly standard air vents) to mount:
http://www.scosche.com/products/sfID1/210/sfID2/337/productID/1594
What ever you do don't buy the cheap Bell brand mp3/pda window mount kit. They are usually found in the discount stores like Wal-Mart, K-mart, etc. The clamp swivel is loose, it can't keep the phone up at a pleasant viewing angle. If you hit a good bump the phone shoots out from the poor grip and the clamp closing by the pressure of the spring. Ugh, pure garbage and a great way to get in a car accident.
Off both of what you guys found and use, are they universal?? Meaning as in, can I swap my sapphire with my g1 or other devices. I guess I should just be asking if the width is very adjustable and or can you change the angle from portrait to landscape easily?? Thanks guys. Just doing my research before I ask for one for x-mas
I have been using this one for a few weeks now.. It's actually very sturdy and becuase its made specifically for our phones, it looks sooo much better and very smooth compared to the other universal ones.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170391719566&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
When you order, keep in mind it's coming from china..it took around 3 weeks to receive but well worth the wait.
It's sticks to the windshield like a champ and will not budge unless you use the release tab. Highley recommended for nav pruposes.

I need a car holder that doesn't block the HD2's camera lens

Can anyone recommend a windscreen mount that would meet my following requirements?
1. Must hold the HD2 securely (goes without saying) - but doesn't have to be specifically designed for the HD2
2. Under or around £10 (can't afford those £40-£60 'official' things!)
3. Must not block camera lens as I wish to record some of my journeys
4. Can swivel portrait/landscape without removing
I have found a fair view that 'might' meet these requirements but I'd like to know for sure.
- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AIO-PREMIUM-C...ries_MobilePhoneBatteries?hash=item2304e852d0 <--- this looks decent but I can't work out whether it blocks the lens or not??
(some more but I've lost the urls - loads on DX to choose from)
Any help's much appreciated!
Hi, I bought this one on eBay:
WINDSCREEN SUCTION CAR HOLDER & CHARGER FOR HTC HD2 LEO, the company is "e-Cell"
It arrived yesterday and it works the way you want it to - there is a hole for the camera lens, but not for the LEDs, and it swivels all the way round.
It costs £7.85, with free P & P, and includes a cigarette lighter power supply (which I haven't used yet).
I hope this helps.
EDIT: I checked and the item is no longer listed - perhaps they're out of stock.
Thanks John, I managed to find the one you're referring to via Google but as you say it's sold out: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200433261802
It looks very similar to the ones being sold by DX for other devices (currently none on DX for HD2), e.g.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18225
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.22814
It looks decent - how easy is it to put your HD2 into and remove it from the holder?
I've also found this super cheap universal one on DX: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.23565
...which allows full swiveling and most likely the top of the HD2 (camera, flash) would stick out from the holder making it accessible for filming. I may order this one as I can always give it to a friend if it doesn't work out, though I'm def still interested in more stuff like your link.
Cheers
The Capdase Car Mount will work.
Try E-CELL on E-bay. I bought mine there, it is a veryy good holder for the HD2 and cost app. 8 pounds.
Search ebay for this "Holder Mount USB Car Charger For HTC Touch HD2 Leo 100". Has opening for camera and holds phone in landscape which is good for copilot.
Hi,
This is for the e-Cell model:
If you imagine the phone in the landscape position, with the five buttons to the right, the phone slots into two grips left and right, at the bottom. These are fixed and don't move, but at the top, in the centre of the phone holder is another clip that flexes to allow the insertion and removal of the phone. This piece of plastic then clips onto a standard flexible arm windscreen mount, which in turn fixes to the windscreen with a suction cup. There is a ball joint on the back of the phone clip, which, when you've found your best position, can be tightened to lock the mount so that it will not move.
I've only used mine a couple of times and it's relatively easy to put in and remove the phone, perhaps a bit stiff at first, and I've found it easier to fit the phone into the holder first and then attach the complete assembly to the windscreen. It seems to work OK, so it may be worth waiting for e-Cell to get new stock, particularly as you also get a cigarette lighter charger, and it's only £7.85 with free postage.
This looks similar to the e-Cell model:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/car-pack-for-the-htc-hd2-p23420.htm but they're sold out too! The joint on this looks more sophisticated, but it's more than twice as expensive. There seems to be a hole for the lens, but the picture isn't very clear.
http://cgi.ebay.it/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280435698894&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
mine, cheapest and camera effective, even if I'd prefer a joint-like arm instead of the one it's got
Hi Ephestione,
It's a pity we can't combine the best features of all the mounts. For instance, mine doesn't have the cushioned grips, so I'll have to be careful not to scratch the phone with the rigid clips.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Car-Charger-Mount-Kit-Holder-for-HTC-Touch-HD-2-T8585_W0QQitemZ390175231504QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_MobilePhones_MobilePhoneAccessories_MobilePhoneBatteries?hash=item5ad8418e10
this one is available, exacly the same as ecell one, but will come "out of the box", and comes with a charger too. this seller also got the 1600mah andida battery.
for recording purpose, another good point is its having a strong and quite short metal neck that won't take cars vibrations as a long neck/flexible one would. definitely would recomend it.
Hi,
Yes, this is the same as the e-Cell item, and it works well. I paid a bit more because I was impatient and e-Cell seem to be UK based, so delivery was quicker. Some comments I found when I googled the holder questioned the location of the company, but I had no problems. I'll check out the battery, thanks.
I bought this and it will suit ur needs.

[Q] GoKart golf cart holder and portable charger

I've got a GoKart golf trolley and I have a Golf GPS program for my HD2, so firstly I need to find a holder for the phone but the question I have for you chaps is,
As I'm running Android on my HD2 and this eats batteries - can any of you recommend a good portable charger that works for the HD2? I'm thinking one of those battery packs that has a usb connetion - then I just plug in my standard lead......I may look to see if I can wire up a usb socket from the carts battery via a cig lighter type setup.
The reason why I think I need one is that a round of golf can be 4 hours long and I'd need to have the screen set to full brightness and always on so I can easily see the golf program.
any help would be great
cheers
As you're using a cigarette lighter would a generic car charger do?
Sorry to flag this up after so long.
Do you really need to see the program all the time? I use GolfGPS when im playing and have the screen turned off except when im stood over the ball ready to take a shot and need to know the yardage. Turning the screen off when not needed will save you loads of battery. My HD2 easily gets round a course with 50% or so to spare on battery life. I think GPS can be set to run in the background but even if not, it doesnt take more than a few seconds usually to figure out where you are!
As for holders, i dont know if you sorted it but have a look at http://www.pdahut.com/herbert-richter-holders-and-mounts/ , id imagine the bike handlebar one would probably fit onto a golfcart resonably well!
This site also has a good collection of bike mounts that may well be compatible with Golf cart. Holders and Mounts

I have bought this bicycle mount from ebay and wanted to share my overall positive opinion on it. It is quite cheap, 3,77$ including shipping to Taiwan, but well built, durable and functional nevertheless. It truly is designed especially for HD2.
Pros:
*really universal(up to 1 inch), it was easy to mount and dismount,. no hassle.
*Sturdy fixation on the steering bar.
*360 degree swirling ball-head joint, very easy to tilt.
* not covering any important part of the phone.
* the holder is cushioned wherever touches the plastic of Phone to reduce possible wearing. inserts.
Cons:
* Was rather hard to pull the phone off the mount, the battery cover tended to come off too. But i guess it is reasonable, otherwise the phone would snap off on every bump and jump. I just think that there might be another fixation mechanism, that could be both reliable and easy-releasing..
* no instruction or manual on how to mount/use the holder.
* it is even harder to pull the holder out from the fixed part. I imagine there would be cases when one would try to briefly release the phone out of holder (to make a call for instance) and put it back. Well, with current design it is rather hard. Me maybe I am doing something wrong. Or some parts need to work a couple of times back and forth until they get to the necessary usable condition? I will see..
* The plastic phone holder has a hole for camera, but i would rather prefer if it would have another hole for the LED light, to use it as an emergency blinking light in cases my bike light is damaged/dead.
Conclusion: I recommend - very handy accessory for frequent bikers, but more suitable for outdoor "sunny" biking, where one would not need to take the phone out and back frequently.
P.S. If there was a nice and cheap waterproof case (to drive in rain) i would have gone for it, but couldn't find any, so ended up with this

VZW car mount for incredible

It's amazing! Best custom mount I've owned. And the clip that holds the phone is also a removable belt clip. There's a punch out for the camera, been driving around with layar turned on. It is win.

There are two versions available from the Verizon store. The one you linked to and one other. They both have one big issue. If you already have a protector for your phone that you like, it will not work unless you take your protector off. The one you linked to has one other issue, it uses double sided tape to mount. The other one I looked at had a suction mount, but as I said, it will not let you put your phone on it unless you remove any protector you are using.
the one linked is the one i'm talking about. i haven't found it on the VZW website anywhere, didn't think to look anywhere else. i don't use a case or anything full time, i ordered an otterbox for when i'm working to wear on my belt, but when i'm not i just throw the phone in my pocket and run. i wish seidio came out with a car mount like this that worked with one of their cases, that would be epic. i'm sure with a dremel tool you could make it work if you were so inclined.
I have this one
I bought this with my incredible when I first got it. before 30 days was up the clip broke. I took it back and got it replaced. Then a couple of weeks later the new one broke in a different place. I hadn't even taken the new one off the car mount and worn it on my belt. I ended up cutting off the clip and gluing the clip to the mount so that it became a car mount only.

where did it break?
i'm wondering if there's a way i can use another company's clip and case without having to remove it. thinking of getting the seidio innocase and clip or something like that, maybe just cut the little tab off of the car mount clip and using that on whatever one i end up getting.
I don't want or use the belt clip, just adds another point of movement to the system. There's no happy medium with adjustments, you either get it where you want it and tighten it down to no flexibility, or it is way too loose. Due to the way the suction cup is engineered, the act of placing the phone or removing it from the clip torques the suction, causing it to fall off all the time. Was not at all impressed.
I have this mount I just pictured. I find it reliable. I do not use the belt clip.. I always leave that on the mount.
I have never used phone cases on any of my cell phones for 12 yrs.. I only have a screen protector..
Dinc goes in my phone pocket. My designated pocket only for my phone.. Not change or car keys..
Carefull
I have one of these.. or I should say I've had 2 of these. First one broke after about 8 seconds of being up and I tried to rotate the phone, and the hing that holds the clip on snapped.
Took it back to Verizon they swapped it out... had the second one a month or so and went to remove the phone and clip from the stand... and the plastic washer that holds the clip to the mount broke.... I now have it zip tied and it works great.
I was not rough with it, its just very fragile. Otherwise a good mount.
I've had 2 and the first one broke within a week. The clip that hooks into the mount broke and wouldn't mount. The second one I had for a few days before it broke. The one the hinge went. I didn't bother trying to replace it again. They did swap it out, but if two break that quickly, I figure I'll just keep having the same problems.....
Add me to the "it's too darn fragile" camp. I ended up buying a third-party "one size fits all" type... They lie too, but it works. I just have to adjust it so the volume key isn't being squashed. (also, no cut out for camera)
2 broken clips at hinge and counting.
Same here, my clip hinge broke both times. I just have it sitting there in the car driving down the road and the phone just falls off and the hinge is broken. I think the plastic is too thin, should be a metal part, and the spring tension always on it fatigues it. Bad design.
I went to verizon and told them I wanted their generic mount and they handed me this:
http://www.amazon.com/Bracketron-PH...r_1_41?s=STORE&ie=UTF8&qid=1285511830&sr=8-41
The one Verizon actually sells is slightly different as the little bottom nodes that hold the phone phone sits on can be bent in and thus you can move the phone around. I will have to take a picture of mine. Anyways even with a case it fits perfectly and its only like $20 and if you have the corporate discount which gets you 25% off it runs about $16.70 total after taxes which is what I bought it for.

So which one would you recommend? I plan on doing a lot of driving up and down I-95 to visit friends in Maine/NH/PA/MD/VA and would love having Google's "Navigator" mounted on my windshield instead of having it sitting in a cup holder (like I do now). I'll be careful with any mount I get, but those universal mounts are just too bulky and a lot of them mess with the volume controls or doesn't leave me a space to plug the phone into my lighter outlet (or have weird mounting points, like in one of the air vents).

I just bought it on a whim today and it is definitely great. Way better than the staples generic one that broke in the first 2 weeks
Wife and I both have one. Both broke right away. Replacements also broke. Always in the same place, the hinge for the clip snaps. The spring is simply way too powerful for the strength of the plastic. On the replacements I just slathered epoxy all over the hinge to make it a permanent mount. Neither one of us were using it for anything other than the car dock, but the thing just breaks like a cheap wine glass.
So in my experience they were 4/4 for breaking within 3 weeks. It's a great dock, but you just have to expect it to break unless you do what I did and glue the living crap out of it.
ive had my verizon mount for about 2 weeks now, my only complaint is that it has a removable belt clip. Ive tried different locations around my windshield and since I play with it so much, the clip has wiggled loose a time or two. other than that, its been better than any mounts ive tried to hack together for it.
TL;DR good mount, bit pricey

Perfect mount?

Ok, I have the M8 (obviously) with a defender case. Looking for a nice, easy to use, sturdy mount that would also accommodate my case. I plan on hooking up my MHL cord to it as well. BUT. It needs to be seriously sturdy. I have 2 12" MTX subs being pushed with a jackhammer amp. The last mount I put in my truck (for a GPS) was ANNIHILATED by the base. By that I mean it lasted 2 days of me driving 5 mins down the street twice a day.. any ideas?

I've had the same car for the last 10 yrs and i use a proclip bracket in it. On it i've mounted many of these mounts from slipgrip for my phones. Used ones for generic tpu-sized cases to seidio active and ballistic/trident cases and they've always held tight. I personally use what they now call the Pro mount since i already have a base, but their ready to go solutions with base and mount might work for you.
I've taken the liberty of navigating all the way to the defender case selection for the m8.
Slipgrip mounts for M8 with defender case
I second Pro Clips. Expensive but they work. I also been running ProClips for over 10 years and it has never failed.
I had been buying the custom half for the phone but finally bought their universal which has a narrow range of adjustment that works good.
I recommend the Kenu Airframe plus. Its super small but it does the job. It is a vent mount clip. I have the original version but I recommend the new plus version since it can fit up to 6 inch phones now, no worry for your otterboxed M8.

You mean the bass from your setup actually broke the mount?
There probably isn't any perfect mount for all folks and all situations. But I've been very happy with the Mountek CD Slot mount: http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroove-Universal-Phones-Devices/dp/B004G1L52Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1418915871&sr=8-1&keywords=cd+phone+mount
Its a simple concept and inexpensive; and while not particularly fancy looking, is well though-out and sturdy. It holds a wide variety of phones (including our M8) very securely, yet its easy to place and remove the phone quickly. I've had a lot of folks ask me about this mount, when they ride in my car. And my wife liked it so much, she's got one, too.
Its a great solution if you don't use CDs. You will also want to check if the mount is going to block anything that is important to you. And a CD slot near the top of your dash (for easy phone viewing and operation) is best. But I often take mine on trips, and it works on many more rental cars than not.
Just remember that hearing damage is permanent. I know it's wicked cool to drive down the street annoying everyone you're near with your bass, but when you're in your 30's you'll be wishing your ears didn't ring all the time. Trust me.
