[Q] Porting Android Auto to Pioneer Headunit - Android Auto General

Hello people of XDA this is my first post on here, I really want android auto but Pioneer aren't updating the unit I have (AVH-X8550BT "Australian") the unit was the top of the line until a month or so ago and cost $1200 here. I don't no what hardware requirements there are for android auto but I'd be willing to be this unit is more than capable. So my question to the people on here is. Is it possible to do what Pioneer should have done and some how flash android auto onto my head unit?

Sell it and buy another one that is compatible with AA . There isn't such thing like porting AA to head unit. You can only wait for standalone version of AA

OK cheers for the advice.

No, seriously, that wasn't said to make fun or something, it's just real. It won't be possible at least for now. 4100 nex costs 700$ so you can easily buy it after selling your current unit.

Yeah I no you weren't poking fun, we don't get those units here in Australia. The only unit we look to be getting is going to retail for $1200 again, I can't bring myself to hand over that much again. Might have to wait a few years until it drops in price.

I have the 8550BT as well...
Maybe we can port the firmware from the 8750BT the hardware doesn't seem that different...

That would be awesome but I don't have the knowledge or skills to do that haha.

I have the same head unit and an S7 Edge. I to am looking to update the firmware some how for this unit, but fear there isn'the going to be a big enough market to ever get the project of the ground.

Support for Over the air upgrandes???

Hi all, as far as you know will this unit support the "over the air" software upgrade that other and less expensive devices already are said to support?
Thanks
Ps. I have an hd2 running windows mobile and I'm getting tired to soft reset the unit almost once a day. I saw android is really stable compared to win mobile 6.5 so I'd like to switch. I must confess, the only thing that prevents me from doing so is the lack of an offline gps navigator like tomtom, the best one.
No one really knows if there will be OTA updates.
Why dont you try flashing android on your HD2? Look in the HD2 section here on XDA.
Thanks, but I can't afford to brick my pda...
Yes there is an OTA menu
Thanks it would be a pity not having this possibility in such a device! But I'm doing a consideration: is it worth it to spend all this money when technology and most of all Android's development is bringing innovation at such a pace? I mean, one can buy a cheaper X3, Huawei. It should work without flaws and would mount the same os...what do you think?
Buying cutting edge stuff is always going to cost lots.
The differences between handsets aren't really that great. If you're worried about money, wait until this handset and others are released and buy one of the current handsets which will probably be reduced.

That was close to my philosophy, I mean when I bought my first pda in 1999 I wanted it top notch in order to last and I kept it until 2004 when I bought another pda top of the line. It lasted until last September when came the HD2. It is a beautiful machine but all of a sudden it seems to be old compared to all those android that are coming out with a continuous flow and I cannot stand anymore all those necessary soft resets and strange behaviours....
So probably it's time to spend the less possible and chose pda like to new X3 huawei, with all inside, ota and gingerbread. Mind changes and this is the case...
Android's too fast moving to really have anything be future proof. Check out the G1/Dream, released October 2008, Nexus S, December 2010.
Big difference. Admittedly the difference between the Nexus One and Nexus S isn't that great but it seems that they're 2nd Gen devices while this Dual Core stuff might be what you could call the third Gen.
Wether they are or not it'll be unlikely that anything you purchase today running Android will look anything but prehistoric in five years time.
As for your HD2 being a PDA, what do you need? Any phone will do what a PDA did ten years ago.
Well I call pda all those devices cause I saw them being introduced in the market more than ten years ago. I use the hd2 for push email, contact sync ota, calendar ota, sat navigation, documents in excel and word, sms sending via web with jacksms, web surfing and LOTS of other thing, among them, safe storage of sensitive data.
I still call them pda cause that's what they have been created for. Now they can communicate and even call, or allow you a call...but the core is that.
Nice chat.
Have a good evening, must go to bed now.
Yes. i used OTA for upgrading, yesterday.
There's also an LG updater Application which will check and install updates. So I guess both bases are covered.

Providing it works.
FOTA updates are not working for the T-Mobile branded unit. Comes back with validation error.

From 2.2.1 to 2.2.2 I guess??

Looking for alternative root methods...

I'd LOVE to get my Chromecast rooted and do some development work on it, maybe even make my own ROM for it or something. Unfortunately, I can't afford to buy something (the Teensy 2) just to root it. College has me on a tight budget, and I'm not even going to some expensive 4-year school, just a technical (2-year, pretty cheap) college!
My Chromecast is a developer unit, and I was wondering if it might be possible to exploit it that way... anybody ever looked into this?
A Teensy is only $16 and you can sell it off afterwards. If there was another method they wouldn't have spent a year coming up with a hardware solution.
Buy a teensy, root your root some friends to recoup your cost and possibly profit.
It is fairly likely that the software can be ported to pretty much anything that the PS3 jailbreak was ported to, subject to minimum memory requirements. In fact, those open source projects will make it much easier as they have done basic groundwork. Otherwise, you can buy a 32u4 based arduino for ~$8 shipped from china and flip it on ebay for a profit after you've used it.

It's against the terms of the developer agreement, so once big G finds out, likely they will de-whitelist it.

Now THIS is a great, constructive idea! I've already got at least one of those devices, a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition.
Plus, this wouldn't be something to worry about so much then:

LOL I bought the Teensey 2++ just to root the CCast...
And you know what? I haven't used the CCast at all since I rooted it but I have spent HOURS playing with the Teensy! LOL
Just some of the other things a Teensy can do if you have one....

If it's cheap enough, I may order one and let you know. I asked them if a 2GB/32GB configuration was available, but if a 2GB/16GB is the max, I'll try that.

Yes, as discussed in the orignal thread over a year ago, that SoM wont fit, you can see by the pic it has a different connector.
No one does 2Gb RAM either, despite the RK3188 being compatible with 2Gb, maybe wait for the Octacore ?
I've been looking for and RK3188 for an upgrade. I've found a couple sources (Aliexpress and Jacky), but both are $110-$130. According to what I've read in the past threads, this is pretty high. Anyone care to share their source and price as a reality check.
Thanks!

Doctorman sells rk3188 soms for 80 euro excl. Shippingcosts
For anyone interested.
I contacted him and the price seems to have gone up significantly. The email I got said RK3188 is 125$ shipped but if you return your RK3066 I can refund 27$. Considering shipping, that makes the board about $100.
I have to think the RK3066 will bring more than $27 on eBay...
Anyone found any other reasonable cost options for a rk3188 upgrade from rk3066?
I ended up getting mine from Jacky (search the forum for her email) for $95 shipped - that was more than I wanted to spend, but it's hard to shop price on these. I had also emailed my retailer (Pumpkin Auto) a week before I emailed jacky and they got back to me a day after my order shipped from her - they offered to get me one for $75 shipped. That was more in line with what I expected..
Good luck
Followup to the RK3188 install. I got it in today and flashed the latest MAL ROM. This is FAST. Cold boot time is around 20 seconds and everything is super snappy.
Heres a head scratcher - with the 3066, I could use my steering wheel controls (using a CAN bus interface from PAC-Audio) with no issues. With the the new CPU/ROM, the SW controls works *mostly* as expected, but its a complete mess with Poweramp. I get 'double' presses (advances/rewinds two tracks) and it mutes the audio every time I change tracks with the SW button. I've verified mapping and the SW buttons work perfectly in other apps. Any ideas?
Thanks.
More info: so I figured out the issues were caused my XposedMTC somehow. I had that installed to customize the sources so I could loop thru just the ones I wanted with my SW source button.
I uninstalled XposedMTC and everything is back to normal, but I have to cycle thru all inputs... Not the end of the world, but confusing.

Dual Screen Magnetic Connector

I am absolutely going to lose this thing. I need backups, but the only one I can find is for the G8x which shows 5 pins down the middle, where the V60 has two rows of 5. Anyone found the proper connector? I need at least 3, and probably more for spared. 1 for car, one for office, one for home.
Geesh, your right, can't find one anywhere. We need these to be put out ASAP. Gonna need a couple more at least.
Why not just leave it on the charger itself? And just buy a second charger.

That;s the plan, leave it on the charger at home, but if I want to charge at work I would need the adapter. I have chargers out the wazoo, so that's not problem, but need that proprietary adapter. I'm sure they will eventually have them.
sent an inquiry to LG about it, I need a second one for my truck to connect to android auto, Otherwise will be going back to my old phone..

Wow $19.99 and backordered that's a bit higher than I was hoping, thinking closer to $10 would be better, and perhaps a $25 3 pack.
just got this from LG, guess its back to my old phone...
"About the product Magnetic Dual Display adapters for the V60 5G ThinQ, are you talking about the Adaptor charger for the V60? The Adaptor can be used only to charge the phone. For you to use the Android Auto on your truck, the phone should be out from the dual-screen case to use the USB connection. Also upon further research for Android Auto, All newly released Flagship devices(LG V60 included) in the market can support wireless connection. Make sure that your truck also supports wireless connection. " unfortunately only 2020 vehicles might support it, as far as I know only the Kenwood aftermarket units currently support wifi AA.
Really liking the dual case, and I like the magnetic charging adapter, but I definitely need more than one. Any luck finding them?

Highway robbery!
Ordered 2 of them this weekend. Just got the tracking number. Be here in the next couple of days. Shipping out of Ft Worth here in USA.
I ordered a couple of them over the weekend and haven't gotten a tracking number yet.
I ordered 4 adapters from LG yesterday, and they are already arriving today (I live in south TX).
Ordered 3 for my wife and I....
Monday evening order and receiving them Thursday
From TX to Ill
I'll just pop the phone out of the case in my car for that price.
Well, I just tried one of these adapters in my car yesterday, and am happy to report that it worked with Android Auto for me ?.

they are full of ****e, I can use Andriod Auto just fine in the case with the dongle/adapter. and thanks the last person who provided the parts site to get the adapter... I don't think $20 is too much for an adapter right now, and it would be nice to have on for in the car and in the house.
It works with Android Auto in a dual screen case - with one caveat - if the case is closed - Android auto will not exit when your car stops and resume playing music as soon as you open your phone;s cover outside of your car.
The only known work around is to keep you cover open or flipped back while connected and driving.

This sounds like a car head unit issue? I just came back from running errands, including waiting in parking lots for curbside stuff, using the mag adapter with Android Auto in my Escape. Zero issues. Listening to podcast. News updates. Music. Made a couple of calls. No issues.

Dex on the Peugeot 108

Hey everyone
I have been looking in to upgrading my wife's Peugeot 108's touchscreen with the the newer touchscreen that has android auto ect.
Unfortunately people have worked out this is an easy upgrade with the unit and just like what we seen with PS5, Xbox, 30 series graphic cards and Ryzen 3000 series We have an infection of people are now selling the upgraded unit at stupid prices.
I had a company before Christmas a company who quoted me a Brand new head touchscreen ready coded for £445.00, I thought this was steep but it was brand new with 2 years warranty and thought it to be reasonable.....but unfortunately I wasn't able to purchase at that time (due to some of the items mentioned above coming out)
Then last week one user on Ebay posted his upgraded unit USED for £599.99, then a week later we have our second used head unit for the same price.....so I thought I go back to that company and ask if the original quote available......surprise surprise.....they gone and put the price up to £699.99.
This scalper type world that is emerging is getting out of hand. These people know that this touchscreen is in demand not just in one car but 3 cars (108,C1 and Aygo) and they are looking to make a quick buck on them. Even though its is not against the law, it doesn't make it right.
I recently started using Samsung Dex with my LG TV using Mirrorlink/Mirrorscreen and its got me thinking if it can use mirrolink on tv...why can't we use Dex on the old 108 touchscreen.
If people don't know what Dex is, it's basically a desktop mode inside the phone....it connects to visual devices like a monitor or TV.....then you get a desktop on screen that use your phone to power everything...and you get access to all your apps....you can connect a keyboard and a mouse ect.
Unfortunately I am just one brain and this is why I have come to Reddit and XDA.....I need people thoughts, solutions and knowledge. If we can work together to get Dex working in a 108 this would truly "stick it" to people trying scalpe the head units.....if we can get it working with Samsung phones first then we could work our way to the rest of Android and maybe other car owners can benefit as well....if we achieve this we lower the demand of the units and the value of them.
So let's put our heads together and work this out. If anyone gets it going post it here.....we can make YouTube tutorial and get the word out. I posted this on Reddit but I know the members of XDA developers are going to have some really magic to make this work.
Good luck people
