[Q] Does my Xperia Z lost water resistance?

Hello,
I have my Z from its release. I tried its water resistance the first day i recieved it, all was OK. I recorded many videos underwater, in swimming pool, at home, and everything was always ok. Everytime i took it in water, I mindfully closed all the covering caps.
But today, I got a problem. I took my phone with me to water, as whnever I did, and when I was looking at it after "bathing", my camera was fogged - it was wet INSIDE. I tried to check those white indicators under covering caps, and those at USB port and headphone jack were RED. I also noticed tiny droplets of water there. Everything else is however working. No display issues, headphones are playing, USB works too.
I must remark that my phone dropped me on pavement from my pocket about month ago (scratched corners), but its resistance worked until today.
What now? Should I claim it? What do you guys think? I bought Xperia Z mainly for its water resistance. It is very distressing that I can take it in water any more.
Edit: one problem detected - mobile data doesnt work.

Since the indicators are red you have nothing to stand on, they will just say that the flaps were open and you won't be able to prove them wrong.

I read somewhere that on the repair service they check if the flaps provide the necessary seal against water. If they provide enough seal, and you have the indicators turned red, they blame you for not having closed the flaps correctly, on the other hand, if the flaps show defects and let water through, even when properly closed and with moisture indicators turned red, they still service your device under warranty.

They were closed. I was always checking them before going in water. Im 100% sure. And yes i can prove it. They can close the flaps and test phone and see if there is water or not.

Dropping the phone may have caused an open gap somewhere and water leaked in.
Nothing you can do, just argue your way in and hope for the best.
If you know you are a clumsy person, you should have gotten a case.

In the pictures the phone has a the back glass lifted, maybe that was the problem. I have the back lifted too , but not that high as yours.

Don't tell them you used it in the swimmingpool, it clearly says in the instruction booklet that you should't.
Swimmingpool water contains acids and chemical products that may destroy the rubber seals over time.

I think I know what happened. Flaps may be ok (I tested to put the phone in water again - there were no water under them, but water still got to a phone - my volume down is damaged now), but the right issue is that back plate is raised a bit around the camera
Type "Sony Xperia Z repair, disassembly manual" on youtube.
As you can see on this video, right under the plate are phone GUTS. The plate can be raised by warming it. Thus it can raise when you play games or a sun is shining on a phone. All Xperia Z owners, check your back plate too if it is OK or raised! I believe this is that water resistance issue..
The fog in camera disappeared during the day and when I removed SIM and put it back, mobile data begun to work. Bad thing is that volume button doesnt work (as I said above). The button itself is ok and its not stucked or pressed, but when I turn phone on, it always starts in safe mode and I cant volume down, I can just volume up (using the button; I can volume down using display), so I think button contacts are fu**ed and phone thinks the buton is pressed. I think only thing I can do now is going to repair service.

I could never imagine submersing my phone in water. not worth the risk.
I treat my XZ as water resistant. I'll text people when im in the bath with wet hands etc.. but never put it in water

Yeah, you are right. I think thats the issue. Did u try to put it in water if it is ok or not?

I've read somewhere of someone using bleach on a cotton bud VERY carefully to whiten the markers.

I had a similar issue, take it to the service center & get it fixed.

Those flaps are piece of crap. Especially that flap where charger/data cable go. Since we playing with it every day, my guess is that sealing got weaken and that's why water got thru the phone. Gap may be less than tenth of a millimeter ( <0,1 mm) and water can easily come in.

i think it's time again to bash those people who warn others not take their phone into water, as the xperia z is not waterproof, but just water resistant. and that's more likely to protect the phone from accidental drops into water, rather than to go diving/bathing/filming with it in water.
and those warners know what the IP-rating says ("...half an hour"..."submerged 'till half a meter"....)

If people actually followed that advice, then there would not be multiple threads like this one, where people have destroyed their phone.
What is the point of deliberately putting your expensive phone in danger, IP rating or no IP rating?

gosh, not this discussion again! It does not matter what the point is or if there is a point or not. If the producer communicates that this phone CAN sustain without damage being in water i-don't know-how-deep for i-don't know-how long, then this phone SHOULD do it. The intentions of the users, or whether there is a point or not in taking your phone to the swimming pool, are NOT important. It is IMPORTANT that whatever was promised to the user SHOULD BE VALID.

Perhaps you have a point, but if you go to a service centre with red water ingress indicators, you will be paying to have your phone repaired as they will say it was caused by user negligence. End of story.
If you do not put your phone into water for no good reason, it will never get water damaged. Why are people using the IP rating to excuse a complete lack of common sense?
Why do people NEED to put their phone into water regularly?

because they bought the phone with the intention that they can do this with it. They've seen it in official Sony commercials (phone used during rain, phone washed under running water after being splashed with color paint, on exhibitions Sony employees dropped it in aquariums, smashed the phone on the floor repeatedly to demonstrate that the glass won't break). I heard that in some shops they even have the Z in a water tank all the time and only take it out for charging. There was that show in Czech Republic where two models used the phone under the shower and so on.
The phone has an ip57 rating which clearly states that you can submerge it into water for 1m and up to 30 minutes. I also believe that you can leave it there for much longer and it SHOULD be okay, only the depth is important. The deeper you go, the higher is the water pressure and the seals might leak.
Now, cars also have ip ratings for water protection and different levels for the interior of the car and the outside. Inside it might be ip54 (water, mud and splashes when entering the car with wet shoes or boots) and outside it's even ip59 or ip58K which means it's protected against water ingress when used with high pressure water jets (e.g. car wash!).
I'm sure most people would complain, if there brand new car is flooded with water on the inside after they went to car wash. The same is true for this phone!
An ip rating is an ip rating and not like "buhu, it's ip57 but it can only manage 3 drops of water before it breaks!". If that is the case, I could have keept my S2 which also survives a few drops of rain without damage. If Sony can't manage that, they shouldn't have advertised it like that or given an ip54 rating or something lower.
You can't claim your phone has the SECOND HIGHEST protection against water there is and then say: "Stay away from water". It's like: "your car has 6 airbags, but don't expect them to work in a crash" or "your Porsche can go 300 km/h, but don't ever try it"
People put their phone in water because they can and should be able to.
If the XZ can't and should be used in water, I'm sure most people would have bought a non water proof phone instead because it would be the same. I was drawn to this phone because of it's water resistance.
I'm beeing very paranoid and bought a 5€ waterproof bag for my phone which I tested yesterday for 6 hours submerged in the sink. The paper inside stayed perfectly dry. Even though my XZ should be waterproof on its own, I think double protection is always better. The bag seems to be waterproof, and even if by some chance it is not, then my phone won't be damaged, because it's supposed to be waterproof too!
With this double protection, I'm still afraid to take it to the pool, but might do so eventually which I wouldn't have done without the bag.

Yes, you do have a point. At least somewhat anyway.
For a start, the manual tells you to avoid chlorinated water. So no swimming pools. I wonder if this is why the water resistance appears to have failed in this case.
I could point out other things that the manual tells you to avoid, but everyone here has already read it before going swimming with their phone, right?

[q] help water damaged s5

i just bought mine and i took it for a test in the pool and took pics and video and i opened to see if water got inside and yes some drops where inside but not in the important area so i dry it close it BUT it seems that it got water inside somehow cuz :crying::crying::crying::crying:l later i try to see the pics and the screen went wild and then the horror screen went from white to black and that was it i try to dry it with hairdryer nothing i came back to live for a sec only to do the same then the rice trick nothing now is all black i can hear the phone respond but no image and im in despair since att told me warranty is void cuz the water indicator is red so im f up. Can someone help me out with some miraculous fix for this problem please i just bought it and im beyond broke. I got isopropyl alcohol if i dunk it without the battery of course will the acohol damage the amoled lcd or the camera or anything? if i dry it well will it come back to life or will the lcd digiticer permanetly dead ? HELP ME OUT HERE PLEASE:crying::crying::crying:

Why 2 posts about the same issue. Sounds like you have your answer. Your phone is busto so unless you wanna go as far as replacing the screen yourself which will probably not resolve all your issues. Stop swimming with your phone :banghead:

Is the water damage strip tripped on both the phone and battery? I did the same thing with mine but luckily only the battery strip was tripped so I just ordered a new battery and Told the store the screen stopped working all of a sudden dodged a bullet on that one

Only the back of the phone the battery one is ok. Where can i get another water indicator to replace the one on the phone. If i dunk the phone on isopropyl alcohol will the screen or digitiser die? Thank in advance

The phone is advertised as "Water Resistance" not "Water Proof".....SO if your wife or kids spill something on it or you drop it in a pool and get it out quickly, you should be okay......If you put it in the pool and played with it (Took pictures etc...) Thats a NO NO.....
It seems you had your S5 in the pool, having fun and now its damaged. I did the same thing with my S 5 at first. I took it in the pool and took pictures under water, and had fun. The speaker sounded like it had water all in it, but after it dried up, the speaker was fine. So is my phone.
But the S 5 Active is rated i believe 30 Minutes, up to 3 feet. SO there is the problem----you have the regular S 5 and its dead bro.....
You need a new phone. I don't think anybody has a fix for water damage. It burnt up some thing inside. I hate to say it , but you will have to get another one. I learned a lesson and hopefully others did by our stories.

Ya mine was on the battery so I could replace the battery yours is on the phone not sure how you would replace that I think you might be out of luck my friend

I can't believe everyone is telling this guy he's SOL. Yes it was a silly thing to do but who hasn't made a mistake?
Jsong, the rice trick takes weeks typically to work, helps if you can get it in direct sunlight as well to speed up the absorption rate. I would suggest giving the rice trick a try again but leave it untouched for a week or two. DO NOT USE A HAIRDRYER, you've already stated that you have but don't again. The force of the air could push moisture deeper and make the issue worse. Take out the SIM, the battery and external memory card if you have one. Vacuum the exposed area for at least 30 minutes, change up the angle of the vacuum every little while to make sure you are reaching all exposed parts. Put the dry cover back on, do not try and turn it on. Now put it in the rice and some say 24-hours works but I would leave it for at least a week. If it won't turn on after a week in the rice and the vacuuming you may need to think about replacing the motherboard which I don't think anyone sells. If you do manage to get ahold of one or any part you want to replace use the guide here to tear it down and fix yourself. https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Samsung_Galaxy_S5

OK im getting a little irritated with this kind of comment that show only the lack of knowledge the S5 normal is IP67 as the active the difference is that the active beside the IP67 has some military test of its own so both phone can be submerged up to 1 meter and up to 30 min there is no difference there OK and yes if i buy a phone thats says it can do that WHY would i do it its like if i buy a water resistant watch or whatever if it says it can be submerged up to 15 meter im gonna swim with it im NOT scuba diving because it will die. SAme thing with the S5 if is water whatever but it specifies that can be submerged up to 1 meter and for 30 im gonna do it following the security measures the one thing i did not calculated was that if the phone have some factory flaws and the water gets in and the indicator goes red im screw now

So, if I purposely crash my car into a building, and I'm laying in my hospital bed, and I say, well if the air bag worked like it was supposed to, then I would not be in this predicament, how would I sound? You'd probably say, well why would you do that anyway? There are some things that you do not do, you'd probably say. That's kind of how you sound with taking the phone swimming, but not that degree.
Well, maybe the phone was faulty. But what service center or tech is going believe you after you've blow dried it, and possibly soaked it in rice or alcohol. If you did any of that, then that throws out the entire argument about the phone being at fault, since the blow dryer, alcohol, and rice are not tested and proven procedures, or "following security measure", for the S5. I'm just saying what you need, but don't want, to hear.
And you're right also, there is a lack of knowledge around here about S5. In my opinion, it takes somewhere around a year before you understand a phone really well. That's why you don't do like you did, because almost no one around here has been in that situation yet, where they had to find a solution. That's why there's no definite answer right now and...Oops, I have to go. I have to get my phone out the sink before the 30 minutes is up. Let us know what you decide to.

The Active and the S5 both have the same IP67 certification for water ingress protection. so NO the Active is not any better under water. And in the case of the OP he just got back lock and was not sure that the back cover was completely close. I have use my S5 on the pool several times to take videos and pictures without issues, you just need to be sure of the usb flap and back case been secured.

I just remember a rep asking if I wanted insure for 3 bucks. Once I got my paperwork it was higher. I asked why. They told me about an additional insurance fee. I didn't need it. Took it off and it's 3 bucks again. Don't remember what it was but I didn't want it. Srry

You mean the 30min underwater commercial didn't convince you it was water proof? LOL...Gonna be hard to get that replaced. I would put it in a ziplock bag of dry rice for 24hr, couldn't hurt....good luck

My Nexus 6 died on water ?

Hello everyone, I have a wonderfull Nexus 6, and I've see some infos and videos that N6 can resist underwater. I wanna try this at home, and first time in my bathroom it work, but no sound on phone next, and the same day I've try to put only camera (phone was up-is-down) in swimming pool (that have salt inside), and it shut down.
So next I've clean it with normal water from bathroom, and let it 3 days, but it still won't wake up...
I don't have something to open the back case, so I can't see anything inside.
So do you think it's dead, or I can try some tips to see if it's dead or not ?

To the best of my knowledge, the Nexus 6 phone is not waterproof nor water resistant...so I would have to say that...Yes...you Nexus 6 phone is dead.

I thought it was waterproof, just wanna take 1 or 2 pics underwater, but with mine it didn't work... It's in my car since 3 days and it's sunny so it's really hot there, I'll try to charge it but I thought plugin to a computer can tell me if it's really dead or not... Thanks.

So let me get this straight... you watched a youtube video and then decided to dunk your **definitely not water proof** phone under water? LOL. You deserve a fried phone for believing a youtube video. That is very stupid.
The mainboard has a special paint on it to help protect it from *condensation* (that is dampness that forms on things when they are cold and you bring them into warm and humid air). NO part of it is water proof.
In addition, SALT water is electrically conductive. So not only did you drown the thing, you shorted it out.

The phone isn't water proof, why would you even do that...
It's okay if you spill a bit of water on it, but not when you stick it in a swimming pool

To be more precise:

I know what you mean. But don't forget how it is in practice. As soon distilled water enters electronic devices it will be contaminated with residues of corrosives and toxic materials like aniline, chlorides and things like that.
Avoid 'water' enters your phone.

Hello, today when pluged in to computer or else with USB, blue led wake's up and stay on as I show you on the picture. But when I plug in to his charger, it turns blue but turn off after 1 second...
Do you think it can not be dead, or it's just his last words before dying ?

The coroner took your Nexus 6, tagged it, and bagged it. Someone will take you shortly to the morgue so you can identify the body.

best thing to do next time, is to dry the phone and stick it in some isopropyl alcohol (to try and get rid of the corrosion and stop it, if there is any), that's the best thing you can do, tip: never use rice, salt is also a bad idea, best thing would be to take out each part individually now, to see if it's one part stopping the phone from booting, sometimes one thing can cause it not to turn on including the screen, so you can also unplug the screen completely (know it's tricky) but unplug the screen as well and plug it in by usb to a pc and turn it on, see if you have any connection to it or if it shows up in device manager, if it still doesn't work after that, for the cost of the parts etc. plus time fitting, you may as well buy a second hand nexus 6 from ebay
This is what we do at the place I work at, you wouldn't believe the amount of water damaged iphones, android phones, ipads and tablets we get in....it's ridiculous...

Hi, the Nexus 6 is NOT waterproof, you've probably killed your phone, try putting it in a bag of rice overnight. (But it's more than likely dead.)

I've already try some things, but no sucess, even if today this blue led can be a good news, but nothing happen when connected to computer, or plug off and pressing on/off +vol up+vol down.
So I've already command another N6 from same ebay site, but if my old N6 can revive it's good news, but I don't think so...

The blue LED may be indicative of a depleted battery. How about now connecting the phone to a charger for a few hours and see if the battery will charge.

Where did you read that it was waterproof? It's never been advertised as that...

Accidentally dropped in water about 2 days after buying it. It got replaced by flipkart[India] from which i had bought and the video showing that Shamu is waterproof is a fake video. I guess.

I wanna try this today, so I'll take a look when charging some hours if someting happen, but for now no more blue led.
And even on GSMarena it says Nexus 6 is water resistant, but now I guess it's only against rain or else, not swiming pool

Oneplus 3 is water resistant!

I was doing the dishes and I had my laptop next to the sink, and my phone connected to it, using the phone's internet. I don't know how it happened, but somehow I pulled the USB cable and the phone went full submarine. My heart skipped a beat :crying: I pulled it out of the water, it was still working, so i started wiping it, and tested the camera, speakers, touchscreen, fingerprint, charging, and everything seemed to be okay except the USB connection :silly: whenever I connected the phone to the laptop I was getting "device not recognized" error. I started to worry a bit and then I remembered I have a heat gun. So I left it powered on, and placed the heat but at full blast (about 70° Celsius) and left it there for about 10 mins (both the phone and USB cable). And guess what! It worked! Fully functional oneplus 3 after being submerged in hot water.
Tl;dr I dropped my phone in hot water, dried it, and it still works!

i wouldnt tell here in general that the phone is water resistant.
maybe you were just lucky and took the phone out of the water really fast again, so it couldnt get deep inside the phone.

It also depends if the water is somewhat salty or not. You could technically submerged the whole phone in distilled water for long and nothing would happen provided you dry it thoroughly after but if it falls into a toilet full of piss, good luck it'll most likely die right away. This phone is definitely not water resistant though.

It's not certified as waterproof, but dropping it in water even for a fraction of a second makes is resistant to water.

Your lucky! It's not water proof! It's splash resistance using it in the rain is fine... Slight water also.. As long as there is no pressure no water will come inside..

It's just luck. Somehow water did not enter in youre phone, to the mainboard.

Sometimes you don't see the effect right away. You may get corrosion after a while. It happened to me with a camera.
A few drops of water got into the camera, now the image stabilization doesn't work well also the auto brightness...
So, sometimes it can take time until you see the resullt of your phone swimming with the dishes

I dropped an ipod touch and a cheap kyocera phone in a fish tank for 30 seconds, pulled it out and after a blowdry and rice soak, they both worked fine.. But by no means does that make them water resistant. Nothing saved them but the grace of God..

Mate, i never said that it is waterproof. And of course, i do not encourage anyone to go have a shower with it. There's a difference between water resistant and waterproof.

Question The phone got wet and now there are water drops in the camera

This is silly.. It's supposed to be IP68. It got wet from low pressure tap water, I didn't mind because I know it's IP68. I was about to take a photo and noticed it's blurry, looked on the back and both the main and wide angle lenses are filled with water drops. So annoying.
The 5X lens is perfect for some reason, zero drops there.
I sent email to Giztop, I hope they can help.

Don't trust any phone to be watertight... many have learned the hard way.
Think of it more like being water resistant.
NEVER expose a phone to salt water. If -any- gets inside it's a sure death.

Damn.. I bought the 512/12 version just 5 months ago. What a sh*tshow..

If it hasn't worked it's way to the mobo you should be fine after the clean out.
Just keep it powered down until then.
Truth be told the seals are rather puny on all phones. It's nice when they work, just don't count on it.
Realize that being under water 3 feet is 1.3 psi of pressure. It will find any openings... hence the max 30 minute warning on most "waterproof" phones.
Two ziplock freezers bags will make it waterproof for a couple inches to a few feet in depth. Even then I would keep an eye on it.

I had an LG V30 in the past.. It was in the water so many times , I figured IP68 can be trusted. I guess not all phones are made alike.
Anyway, I turned it off and it's sitting in rice (no idea if it actually works, but better than nothing).
My biggest worry is actually water marks on the camera glass after it dries. The main reason for buying this phone is the camera.
I already sent Giztop an email about it, let's see what they will reply.

Mine fell in a sink once but it was ok . Xiaomi waterproofing seems kinda hit and miss tbh

Forget the rice, eat it.
Heat drives out moisture even in a high humidity environments ie a hot box. Used in tropics to perverse lens, surgical equipment, etc.
Don't over cook it though
A constant 110F will work but it may take a spell.
The water will likely leave a residue but it may not be an issue. Try to gently tap it to the side so it will vaporize elsewhere.

I'm using a sous vide box , inserted a hair dryer in the whole of the sous vide and set the HD on low. Whenever it's turned on the moist goes away, as soon as I stop it comes back. Trying now 30 minutes or so, I'll update.
Giztop seems to avoid taking care of it, but I learned IP68 is not to be trusted. $1200 lesson.

It's not a expensive lesson yet... have it taken apart and dried.
That's probably the best option to avoid damaging it.
