This is more of an opinion question.
If you weren't into flashing roms, theming, bricking your phones, would you rather own an iPhone or any particular Android phone (please name phone)?
I've never owned an iPhone and I own a Fascinate. Samsung has really pissed me off with the late updates. Verizon has also pissed me off in the bloatware forced on users as well as late updates.
If Verizon put out a Nexus series phone I'd own that to hopefully fix both issues. Unfortunately, no matter how great the devs are on this site, they are not paid to do this and it takes a lot of time and frustration to get out the latest builds based on the latest Android.
However, with iPhone much of this is fixed as Apple has full control over the process. For better or worse.
So, I'm curious that if I wanted a no hassle smart phone, should I consider a different Android phone (as I love Google and its services) or should I just grab the eventual next iPhone?
What's your opinion? (I know this might be a biased location to find opinions.)
P.S. I'm also very interested in the upcoming Xperia Play and Playstation Suite.
Depends. The iPhone is awesome for people who want a generally no-nonsense phone with beautiful and (mostly) well-written and well-controlled applications with wide mainstream support. Android is getting there, but is still a bit behind in that regard. However, it got to that point by having a super-tight ecosystem that is very unfriendly for customisations, at least to the degree you get with Android.
If you jailbreak it, you'll be playing the same waiting game since you'll have to wait for the iPhone Dev Team to release tools to exploit vulnerabilities. If you unlock the phone, upgrading before waiting could even be dangerous, as baseband developments normally take much longer.
Give it a try, see if you like it. If you don't, trade or re-sell; they don't lose value that quickly.

Quite opposite, really. For most Android users, being rooted means having the latest update, while for iPhoneys, it means you are well behind. And look, they have to wait 'til iOS 4.3 to get a slight modicum of notification right.

Samsung released it to AT&T a long time ago. AT&T likes to do extensive testing, so we don't end up screaming that our phones aren't working because Samsung made a typo. (Just look at all the threads on all the forums about problems with LolliFlop on other phones.)

I am sure you are correct, but the testing is necessary only because of their bloatware that almost no one uses. I would pay a bit extra for AT&T to provide vanilla Android without all the bloat. They would make more $$ that way, in my opinion.

From the small minority of us who care, like those posting on forums. The majority of their customers couldn't care less. (Unlock the bootloader and they'd make even more - from us .
The only testing they're doing is to make sure all their bloatware runs correctly.
Although vzw rushed out LP to the S5 and reviews have been nothing but horrible!

And it was due to the Note 3 port, not the bloatware. I'd rather AT&T wait until at least 5.1, then test it extensively, and get all the remaining bugs out. I retired as an alpha tester long ago, and I got paid for doing it. I don't want to do it for free with a phone I bought from some company - it should work the first time. Which is why I'm still on 4.4.2, root and SafeStrap. The phone works, I can back up my whole data partition easily and I can flash any ROM I want (none so far - maybe Note 4 Evolution when they get the bugs out) that works with a locked bootloader. If the phone lasts, and it can still be used (my StarTAC, probably the best phone ever made, can't be activated any more, because phones have to have GPS now), it comes with me in the coffin, I don't need more phone. (It's not a phone, it's a Linux box that fits in my pocket - and it can do voice and text too.)
A company has a ton of customers. They are working on a project that affects their customers, their business and their bottom line.. They don't keep their customers in the loop. They don't announce deadlines, goals or objectives. They don't have the respect to even let us know about setbacks. It doesnt matter what the name of the company is, it sounds more like an issue of a company that should lose the respect of its customers and not a company to make excuses for. This behavior is inexcusable and unacceptable.
I know this is WAY off topic, but.
As a community at XDA we've gotten a one sided view of this. I've said this part before: As a community, XDA hosts around 5-6 million members, but this includes ALL devices, every single one of them. AT&T sold 10 million Note III's in the 1st month alone. So you can possibly get a feel of how minimal the Note III footprint is in the overall standing within the AT&T markets. We here are quite in the minority here at XDA in the grand scheme of things
Most people who own these devices (really any device for that matter) don't care about the latest and greatest ROM, when it comes out, or when it doesn't. They have a device, they need it to work the right way every time they try to do something with it; period, and no excuses.
They owe none of their customers any explanations as to the when/how/why/what, any upgrade comes out or doesn't for that matter. The amount of complaining would be off the charts if they pushed a release out without proper testing and it was a train wreck, or they said it would be coming out on "Date X" and they had to push back for some reason.

And it is about 1.1 gig download, takes about a hour to totally install. Depending on your Internet speed. Plug it in why it is downloading, and it will be fully charged by the time it actually gets it all downloaded.......

i've been checking XDA every several days to see if there will be any information regarding Android 7 ROMs for N910F, but there seems to be an absolute silence.
Is there anyone from the development teams that could give an update on the subject, should we expect any roms this month, for example? i'm surprised by this silence, because Galaxy Tab S, for example, already has 7.0 rom for weeks:

There have been a lot of complaints regarding battery life on MM, so maybe android 7 will be the next great thing in Note 4 Roms?

of course, probably you grow the cow first if you want to have some milk, or maybe build an airplane first if you need to fly to a different city. if you find it reasonable, good for you!
however this does not give any information regading upcoming Android 7 roms for N910F, or why they are not showing up (are there any issues, etc).

It says that the Android 7 Nougat ROM for the Galaxy Tab S has no telephony at present! Not a good start for a mobile phone ... however "smart" it may be!!
I suspect that is the main problem!

it's very difficult to say. Tab S is a tablet, with slow CPU, but with amazing screen and excellent thinness/weight.
Android 6 rom actually made this tablet usable again, a perfect thing for web browsing.
many users (like me) are fine to use it just for wi-fi with Android 7 ROM.
I don't think there will be any problem with Android 7 on Note 4 Snapdragon, but it's amazing that nobody comments on this, and does not give any plans. I'm sure there will be many users willing to jump from 4.4.4 to 7.0...

Yes I have the Note 4 (SM-N910F) and the Tab S (SM-T805) and have Lollipop on both. I am sure that as the Android 7 (Nougat) ROM gets rolled out to phones as opposed to tablets there will be some Nougat ROMs appearing for our Note 4. The person who cooked the Nougat ROM for the Tab S obviously had difficulties getting the telephony to work He says:

Graphical glitches on rotation and screen off
RIL, meaning no telephony support so far"
- that is probably why that ROM hasn't been developed further for phones!

The tab s has almost the same procrssor as the note 4 exynos. However yes it isnt a processor which is good for an flagship tablet but Samsung does that with all tablets, the New Tab S2 2016 edition also only has a SD652 processor, which also cant be clasified as high end..

I hope too. But let's don't get overwhelmed by the hope.
From business perspective it's pointless to invest in old device support in this situation. They've lost billions on Note7. Upgrading Note4 to Nougat means more spending and give users reasons to stay longer on old devices, while they want you to buy a new one quicker to cover their expenses.
Upgrading Note4 would be a very noble move from Samsung, but as their previous behavior shows, noble moves are not in their habits.

well, if you ignore customers and their loyalty, then it'd be pointless to invest in old device support.
if you value your customers, then it is not pointless.
because happy customers help you sell your products; unhappy customers do the opposite.
at the end of the day, there's nothing really that would prevent a healthy Android 7 ROM to be made for the Note 7.
Samsung has already made a lot of people angry by removing features like Flat screen, the removable battery, ir blaster, etc. If the battery were removable in Note 7, very possibly the recall and the media disaster wouldn't even have happened.
Let's see if they will lean, and will become customer-focused again.

I'm not trying to argue, but lots of people, who buy top devices (whatever that means), usually don't care and even don't know what version of OS they have. I'm not trying to say they are stupid or something, they just don't care or the OS version is not their priority.
Plus lots of old device owners are not direct Samsung customers, that's what this business success is about: if customer wants to be on the edge, (s)he should buy new. I don't know if there's a research about how many - 2-3 y.o. flagships have 2nd+ owners, but the refurbished phone market is quite big. So, part of not so must-do investment like upgrading old phones is not only going to nowhere for the phone makers, but also creates undesired competition for their new products on some markets (e.g. like in my country where operators' offers phone+contract aren't so "sweet" like in countries with bigger number of potential customers and people would think twice if they need to upgrade with brand-new or lightly used). Note4 users are just a thin slice.
And you can't blame Samsung for not taking care about old device owners - they released 6.0.1 update for N910F not so long ago, they run "buy-back" program in lots of places. But, you know, there should be something to get you interested in buying new phone.

I did get the same thought about my Note4 and Nougat as soon as I heard about termination of Note7, but... I'm skeptic here. It's hard time for Samsung to invest in something with doubtful possibility to return and make their new products less valuable comparing to old ones.
I've no idea what you all are thinking, but 1. There sure as Hell won't be an official Sammy Update to 7.0. Never ever.
2. 7.0 Custom roms are far away. Since no Samsung phone is on an official stable build (afaik) there's no base yet. So the only Option is AOSP. In my experience even the 6.0 Roms aren't stable enough for a daily driver. Since a Nougat port needs some base, normally the 6.0 Rom would be used as a base. It gets a bit technical from here on, but tldr is, it's not as easy as downloading the source, copying some folders around and bang, rom...
3. As a (un)written rule, you never ask for eta's. Ever. It's no problem if you ask if there is anything out there, but as you figured already out, there's not. So asking like a child on christmas day when it's going to be there, especially that close to release of the source, is considered rude.

your comment regarding the lack of the first official base gives some understanding regarding 7.0 status, thanks for that!
As for the last one, p.3, asking "when" and "how is it going" could be considered rude only by really childish and immature persons.
There are a lot of people here on XDA that flash roms in their spare time too (like people that develop them), and not everyone has too much of it. we would like to have at least some basic understanding about 7.0 progress, to plan migration to the new rom (which requires dedicating several consecutive days for roms flashing, data migration, and testing). Asking when, is about planning.

According to my experience, this is true. No one here should think that they use their phones the way we do, here on XDA. 8 out of 10 users just update their devices, because they see the OTA notification appearing, but don´t even care about the differences between the old OS and the new one. If you ask them, what is KitKat and Lollipop, or root, most likely they won´t know the answers. As long as Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber, whatever works, everything´s fine. The only difference they do care about, is battery ilfe. By the way, battery life... I´m an android user since Gingerbread. I had several devices, before i bought the Note 1, and since then I´m using only Note phones, I had the Note 2, Note 3, and now for a long time, Note 4. I never ever understood why some people are so keen on having the newest OS, because according to my experience, the newest is rarely the better... I liked KitKat, especially the X-Note custom ROM´s. Lollipop was on the market for long time, i had to reflash my phone, so i thought i give it a try. After a few weeks of being on Lollipop, i ran back to KitKat, my good old X-Note. Lollipop was a huge stepback in battery life, and i haven´t experienced any really noticable advantages. About a month ago i deciced to upgrade my KitKat to Marshmallow, just out of curiousity. A huge disappointment, again. Battery life is also worse, the overhyped permission management system is a joke, and apart from the off-screen memo i haven´t found anything useful in MM. So, as before, i went back to my good old KK, i enjoy the stability, the extreme long battery life, and, honestly, i don´t even wait to Nougat.

It goes even further than not careing. My own girlfriend HATES OS Updates. i told her, that for her Mate 7 there's a new Android Version out. She refuses to update because every update on every device ever (not only android, windows too) meant major hassle for her. She uses the phone as is and everything that changes anything is evil. Don't try to argue with security or such. She is just feared, that her phone won't work the same anymore. And seeing how much i flash my phone to "get it working" i can't blame her
Battery life is a topic i'm struggeling with. My inner nerd wants to get the maximum runtime out of that thing. But recently, with Doze introduced, i have some major Notification Problems. Allo doesn't notify at all or 2 days later. Whatsapp randomly delays Notifications by hours... Maybe the ever itching battery saving thing has gone to far. I mean, on a typical workday i leave at 6am and come home at 5pm with 75% Battery left. I just stopped caring. The Note 4 makes it through a day on every OS for me. And a second one if i have too. :good:

Several devs making AOSP/CM Roms have stated in their threads, that it's in the works. Only now some devices running stock'ish roms are getting Android 7 (OPO..) We are rocking an oldish phone with a processor/chipset that no official Android 7 phone has. Samsung has no official 7 rom either. So it's just a lot of work to get something useable.
I'm sure our devs have something bootable. But getting from there to something usable/daily driver ready is a long and bumpy road. Give them some time. We'll get it sooner or later. For sure.
I've given Samsung (and Google) the benefit of the doubt and tried their new phone and new UI software. I returned my S10 and reverted my Note 9 back to Oreo. Now life makes sense again for me. I'm also someone who's guilty of impulse purchases. I'm trying to be better about that. Mobile tech can be addicting.
The new UI on the Note 9 feels like it's been crippled. Like Google, and to a certain extent Samsung, are inching closer and closer to Apple territory. Meaning that they are removing more and more features away and pushing users into tighter boxes. Call recording apps, theming apps, greater control over GPS settings, greater control over camera settings, easier to understand camera settings, and just other faux improvements that leave users feeling like they're using a half-baked OS.
The S10 was fine enough but without the features and apps that I've grown to dearly depend on my Oreo Note 9, I couldn't live with it. It makes me realize that there is no hope that such apps and features will ever make it to the new Note later this fall either.
Not without root. And that means that unless I want to keep this Oreo Note 9 for the rest of its life, any future Note device will have to be Exynos. Which makes me a bit disappointed because the SD chips have been bringing some great features to these phones. But we will never be able to count on reliable unlocking of SD Samsung phones here in North America so from now on it's Exynos for me because I will be relying on root access to get the features that I want but more importantly the features that I NEED.
I'm curious if anyone else feels the same way about this. About Oreo and the direction Samsung and Google are moving from here. I just wish we could stay on Oreo and continue getting security patches and other bug fixes along the way. Without being forced to switch to Pie. I will never understand this need among some users to quickly update to the latest OS version. They feel content to live with bugs in order to use some new features? An OS that's not fully baked in? That's good for them? I don't get it. Not that I'm supposed to get it. Just saying, it seems irrational to me. But that's me.
Something needs to change. Samsung and other parties need to come together and agree to let us unlock and root our phones. If we buy these phones outright, unlocked and outside of carriers, we deserve to do whatever we want with them. And that includes unlocking and rooting. Something needs to give. For a while there, Samsung seemed to be looking at the things people were rooting for and introducing them on their next phones.
But now, it feels like they've moving in the opposite direction. I fear that Samsung will no longer be known as the manufacture that gives its users more features than they need and more options to customize their smartphone experience. It feels as if those days are now over and we will be forced to just accept whatever Samsung gives us out of the box.
Not unlike what iPhone users are forced to do with their smartphone experience.
Long live Oreo! Long live the Note 9!
Why not sell it and get n9600? Snapdragon and rootable.

Call recording being the biggest one and overall smaller ways in which the OS is laid out. Like with the camera settings and notifications work.

That's fair. We're all different.
Bought my Note 9 when One UI was just released. Had a lot of trouble with several key apps (banking, mail, weather and some news apps). Had crashes and graphical glitches almost every day and every week a "fatal" crash were I had to restart my Note with a button combination. I was thinking about returning my device. Kept is and installed the latest Oreo 8.1 version. Almost all software problems are gone. For 3 days not a single crash. Keep my fingers crossed
dont know if you guys side loaded the beta update but on a fresh pie install, not updated, i dont have any of the issues reported.
i have to say my experience is totally different. I think OneUI is fantastic and a major differentiator. i think samsung has taken the OS and built on it. I am a phone junkie and regularly look to buy other devices, but this is the first time im sticking to Samsung not only because of HW but now SW.
I'm a happy camper with One UI. Not gonna lie, I loved how Oreo on note 9 looked. But I'm guilty of upgrading phones twice every year. A fresh look gives me no reason to upgrade to S10 lol. I'll wait till note 10 comes out.

No. My Note upgraded to Pie/One UI immediately after talking it out of the box and setting it up. My user experience with the Note is One Ui only. I've factory reset (deleting data and settings) my Note four times (installed a different set of apps every time) and didn't use a backup (coming from an iPhone) so it was a 100% fresh install. The problems started the same evening, the first crash was within a few hours. With Oreo i'm missing a few features (night mode and lift to wake for example). One Ui is definitely looking more polished.
Friendly reminder, the only constant in the technology world is change. Anyway, Pie takes some getting use to and my biggest complaint is notifications have stopped while my screen is off. I still get calls and texts, but everything else stopped. Android called it Doze and change is inevitable.

I like one UI a lot. It's very modern and fluid. I don't have many issues with it. I've disabled updates, though, hoping for root to come soon so I can flash even better customized one UI roms and remove the crap they include permanently instead of just disabling it. That way the phone is lighter and the processor wouldn't have to work as hard.
I get your points, though.
I think I'll go back to Oreo also can't stand not to have my notifications play through the phone when connected to Bluetooth miss way to many notifications. I have to turn off media playback on bluetooth to have notifications play on the phone, and when playing Spotify the notifications interrupt the music hate that.

I did, too, but never paid attention to it and I like it actually. I think it was done purposely so people don't text or check their social media and drive. Phone calls come through no problem.

Mhm. I "believe" you. Then why were you concerned about the notifications going through your BT in the car? Haha
To each their own. I'm too old and way too busy now to deal with rooting, customizing, etc. Used to spend hours on it when I was in my 20s, the results were always disappointing. I have only a few requirents. The phone has to be secure (my corporate access apps and email account will not work on a rooted phone), reliable, and I have to have a way to set default apps. Camera has to be good but I don't care much for too many camera features or pro mode. I have a full frame dslr for when I want to take real pictures. And I really don't give a crap about filters. Never used them and never will.
So, apple is out of the question mainly because I can't set default apps (open Google maps instead of Apple maps for example), but I honestly think they are overpriced for substandard tech. And I can't think of any iPhone that comes close to the battery life of the note 9.
In summary, looking back, I don't miss having an unlocked bootloader phone. In fact, I can't think of a single good reason to root anymore. None of the custom roms or kernels are actually an improvement, and in my experience, they never have been. I actually like the new android.

Not disagreeing with you but there certainly are still some good reasons (in my opinion) for rooting.
Disabled high volume warrning with headphones (I personally found this very annoying)
System wide ad blocking
More efficient kernels
Use of Samsung's built-in call recorder
Battery charge limiting
The option to install AOSP based ROMs (Although the lack of HWC means battery life is poor)
Biometric unlock after reboot
More theming options
Use any app with the dual app tool
This post is not demand a build for our phone, this post is not to get anybody upset it is just a question that I've had for many years.
I've owned every single Nexus device up until the Nexus 6P, and have owned every single pixel device... I remember that with each Nexus phone the support scene was so robust that you look forward to a new phone to come out and see development on it...
For some reason pixel phones are one of the only phones that don't get love from any custom ROM development out there.. you see that lineage OS does not support our phone and has not supported our phone since the Pixel 1 officially. Paranoid Android has not supported our phone at all since the Pixel 1 , And the last official update from them was in 2017.. why is it that our phone being one of the latest phones does not get love?
The main thing that I've heard is that our phone is too expensive to build for, but I have seen the OnePlus 7 pro have vast support in the community and it is almost up there as far as pricing goes as the pixel.
I have always been one to contribute to donations or to work that's worth donating to, dirty unicorns has been a great ROM, but if you think about it our selection of ROMs can be counted with one hand .

I also believe the pixels don't attract the custom rom enthusiasts like us they are made & sold & marketed to people to be a iPhone competitor also I feel a lot of developers are getting older & many devs just support a few phones that's it & there are not as many devs on the scene like there were years ago unfortunately I remember have my OG Droid from Verizon the support was crazy unfortunately I feel we have to look at it this way its a end of a era for google phones sad to say
Those custom roms are made to make our experience feel like Pixel. They take here and there from pixel feature. Since we are using pixel software, so what the point of having the custom rom? Kernel is more important. Thanks god we have artemis and kiri. Soon we will have Proton or maybe Sultan.
Btw we dont have TWRP support while there is for OP7Pro. Install a custom rom or make one is pain in the ass.
Because they consistently don't live up to expectations. Everybody keeps waiting for them to live up to hype and at least attempt to challenge others with hardware or respond to feedback and they continue to ignore that feedback. it's still in all right device, I like it it's overpriced as hell and I'm glad I waited a few months to get it, still tempted by the OnePlus 8 pro after leaving my 7 pro for this.

Better off going back to the 7 pro.It jus got Dual boot twrp. I'm running Oos and lineage as of this writing tomorrow might be different :laugh: . I got a 3xl and it lost twrp after Android 9 you can fastboot boot it with half the functions not working the 7t the same way an id imagine 8 pro be the same. Only way to have fun with Magisk on the 3xl Android 10 is to be running a user-debug build. Without the debug build magisk will let you overlay the system an look at your data but that's bout it. The way things look nowadays looking alot more locked down then they used to wait til Android 11 hits even more so is the case. Now Google going to build their own chipset like Samsung with help from Samsung Which will bring us one more step closer to Google Fuschia instead of Android
ROMs in general have gone down hill.
The need for them isn't really there. Early on, Android phones had tons of issues, shortcoming and limitations... ROMs were a way around that, to get the phones to work the way we wanted and the way they should have come out of the box.
Now? Most phones are really good, and there's not much to improve. ROM's don't really have much to offer any more, other than to a shrinking pool of users who want to tweak their phones more than they actually USE their phones...
Adding upon all comments above one of the reason is people are stuck with IOS. They don't know the actual power of Android. Who ever tries the Android are forced to go back to ios again because lack of facetime and other apps that are only available only ios

Realistically, what's the power of android these days? Yes, you can tweak icons and the status bar and stuff, which 99.99% of phone owners don't care about...
The differences between the platforms isn't as great as it once was... I am on an iPhone 11 Pro at the moment and its a great phone... I want to come back to Android at some point but the watch situation on Android is a joke. And for the Pixels... they just never live up to the hype. I love Samsung, but updates still suck. There is OnePlus but some of the features like Wifi calling don't work on ATT half the time...
I prefer Android overall, but if you want the complete package with a good watch, Apple has the better package.
I had high hopes for Essential but we saw where that went...
I wish that Google would put out a pixel without giant bezels, that didn't have a last generation processor, etc... They will put out a phone in November that's using the same specs as phones that came out last month...

Realistically, today, what does the average person need root access on their phone for? I haven't rooted or ROM'd in several years... The tinkerer in me wants to, but I never find any compelling reason to...
I just don't care enough about what font my Instagram icon uses...

my root need are viperfx, swift theme installer, fingerface , Sd maid ( save 2GB in every week when cleanup), etc
I have a Galaxy Note 10+. One of the heavy flagship phones from last year. There's about 3 ROMS and the communication in the threads is just about non-existent.
It's kinda sad because I remember my Note 4 having a ****load of AOSP ROM options and this phone has 1 that hasn't been updated in months. I would love to root/flash a ROM on my phone but I think the main thing is a lack of developers. Most have probably moved on and don't see a point in developing custom ROMs when most phones nowadays are capable of doing almost anything. The main reason I rooted/flashed ROMs was for the ability to customize my phone to my liking.

Exactly, and today, so many stock phones allow most of the customization that ROMs used to have to provide... And if not, install a different launcher and there are your themes...

IMO Pixels don’t have the fan base of the type of enthusiast that install custom ROMs and such. Higher spec phones like OnePlus and stuff like they are more heavily modded i feel like because those types of people are attracted to the specs. Pixels don’t have specs that are anything to write home about. Where as a OnePlus with 12GB of RAM is pretty impressive.

That's probably it right there. The latest and greatest Pixel, uses specs that are already obsolete... Every year, they bring half year old specs and release their new phones with comparable specs to everyone else's specs that are already on the way out.
My thoughts below are mine, and mine only..
The reason you don't see as many custom roms here on xda imho is because it's no longer a hub that's a viable place for most roms to gain any value. the passion for development hasn't died. There are many great new features, and things users would love. Sure, the pixels are great out of the box, but you can say that for any flagship that has come out recently.
Don't get me wrong, xda is great, I'm just saying you shouldn't think devs and users have lost interest because their content isn't on xda.
I mean you're right,. It's different than the days of installing a ROM on a Droid x or something and actually seeing a notable difference between Moto blur and not. Or my note two with some of the different runs I could get on it. I don't know, I think I would like the freedom to make different apps different notifications so that I could customize notifications by app or by person a little easier for text messages. Little things like that that I feel like I used to get in some of those older arms but maybe not maybe I'm just misremembering or something.
