Huge Battery Drain from Native E-mail App Sync - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S6

I am experiencing significant battery drain from the Exchange linked native E-mail app on the T-Mobile S6 with the push update installed. The drain accounts for ~50% of the battery usage and is attributed to "Email Sync" from the native app. Has anybody else with an exchange linked phone experienced this? My battery lasts only 6-7 h in the presence of this drain under normal use. I tested the drain during rest overnight, and the drain accounted for ~40% drain over a 6 hour period of absolute rest with complete keep awake over the same time. This drain is a deal breaker and is killing the phone for me...
Your feedback, possible solutions, or sympathetic experience is greatly appreciated.

I froze the native email app and the exchange stuff since I need to bypass exchange security.
Using mailwise, I have no real drain syncing with my exchange account. It's a free app and really good so you might try that as an alternative.

I was hoping to be able to use the native app and avoid a 3rd party exchange mail app. Mailwise is great though. Actually better than the native app.
I cannot freeze native email services and apps though. Restarting after removal of the account details on the native app worked and all is well. I can finally enjoy the phone!
Many thanks

[Q] Better mail application for Gmail?

the stock Gmail application is great but it's a real battery drainer since it utilizes push. i'm only 19 really, so i don't need to see my useless mails about facebook updates(and stuff) that immediately.
the stock Email has no threading and the UI is pretty meh so ye.
is there any nice gmail client there that has mail threading, a nice simple UI and an option for interval mail fetching? tried K-9 and Maildroid, no threading on them lol.
if not, Google please get us an option to enable push or simply use fetch.
i'm currently using JuiceDefender to "disable" data transmission when my screen is idle. ideally by that, no "push" mail when my screen is locked.
Why not deactivate the autosync of gmail?

You have to maintain a data connection at all times no?
Yes, but it still is far less battery demanding than checking for mail periodically.

In OP's case it's better to turn off data all together.
BTW, how does one turn off HSPDA and enable 3G only on a Bell phone? There's no option in settings/ wireless networks/mobile networks to set this.
hmm I shall try push gmail overnight, currently it's at 10% drain with no syncing of anything, nothing. but with a connection on. thanks guys.

[Q] Stock Email App and Activesync Push

I have 3 email accounts setup on my SGS (Bell, 2.1): 1 exchange activesync using the stock email client set on push, and 2 gmail using the stock gmail app. I have been getting very bad idle battery drain, it can be over 5%/hour while idle, and have also had my activesync 'stall' and stop retrieving new messages after a period of time. Using the 'other usage' page in battery history I found that the phone was not sleeping very much (at least 65% running) and on the 'partial wake' page the culprit was identified as "Email". When I switched my exchange account from push to 10min poll the running stat dropped below 20%, but email remains the highest partial wake usage. It seems that the stock email activesync push is having a hard time keeping the push connection running and this is both killing my battery and not retrieving my emails.
I have 2 questions:
1) What does the "Email" entry on the partial wake screen of battery history cover? Is it just the stock email app, or does it also include the gmail app?
2) I have also read from many people that push from an exchange server works great and is light on the battery. Could there be something about the particular exchange server I am using that is causing my activesync woes? Several iphones use push from this server with no apparent issues.
Thanks.
To follow up my original post, I have found some new information on this. I shut off my exchange/activesync syncing completely and my battery life went through the roof. My idle battery usage went from 3-10%/hour to under 0.5%/hour and I still had 2 gmail accounts syncing via push. The 'running' at idle went from 20%+ to about 1.5%, and the partial wake usage of 'email' went down to 0. From this I have drawn 2 conclusions: 1) The 'email' entry on the partial wake history does not include gmail. 2) The stock email app uses a ridiculous amount of time and power to sync email via activesync, i get between 6x and 20x the battery life when I am not using activesync. Has anyone else seen results like this? I am still wondering if this is a peculiarity of my exchange server or if activesycn is this bad in general?
Thanks.
Google & Microsoft
This is exactly what Google wants you to think.
Activesync is bad, so let me switch to Google, etc...
Google is playing with fire, in my opinion. People simply love outlook and exchange.
it's a million times easier for them to dump google phones and switch to a large available mobile OS's like iphone, Microsoft, Symbian, etc... instead of dumping outlook.
it's true Android is very attractive to users being on many devices and by many vendors but outlook is more precious and the alternatives google is offering are ridiculous compared to outlook.
after trying and searching right and left, i concluded that i have to sell both my Android phones back to iphone or Windows phone 7. Exchange Activesync is a red line.

Email app maxing out CPU.

Hello. My N1 has been experiencing issues. Every 20 or 30 minutes, my phone gets slow or unresponsive, and using Usage Timelines, I find out that the CPU usage is at a 100%. I checked it, and there are usually 2 or 3 android.process.acore* that takes 100%, followed by the Email and Android System*, which usally takes 50 and 40 percent use respectively. This is frustrating and burns up the battery quickly.
Any fixes for this?
FYI, my Email app has two accounts.
- College account set up as IMAP, to check email every half hr.
- Hotmail account set up as exchange, checks every hr. NOT syncing Contacts and Calendar.
I have stock rooted FRG83, running A2SD+ with Dalvik on SD card. Class 6.
Dang no one?
You know you can use gmail as imap for your school email and dump the email app
There has been a bug in froyo with the email app setup using exchange that causes 100% CPU to be used. It still hasn't been fixed. Search the forum and you will find a thread about this with link to a Google thread which has a custom email app I installed and fixed my issue.
I switched my hotmail from exchange to pop. The freeze ups were more trouble than they were worth.
On the other hand, I did have my college email set up as exchange because I wanted to sync my school contacts and calendar. And I really wanted that functionality, but my battery life went down to less than 2hrs, idle. Now that its gone it lasts a lot longer.

I found a fixed version of the email app which corrected the CPU 100% issue. Been using it ever since.
Could you post a link?
UPDATE: Never mind, I found it.
So far it seems stable, and notice some changes. I do like that I can finally change account colors manually.

[Q] Gingerbread email drain battery

Since I run gingerbread, i have a huge issue with email app that drains battery when configured with active-sync.
I have 3 account configured that way (Job , hotmail and client) and 1 pop3 account.
If i unconfigured exchange accounts everything is fine , but as soon as i have one configure, OMG it drains battery horribly. 30~40% /hour and more...
I've seen that the email apps it conume 81% of the battery...
I've try different rom (juwe's, Darky's, Criskelo) and i had the issue with all...
Is there anyone who also has this issue?
May we run older froyo email apps on ginger?
thanks
Same here. Only way i was able to solve it: Buy Tasker and set up a task which enables Auto-Sync every x hours for 5 minutes. Or, if you can live without Push or scheduled sync, untick the Exchange accounts in Accounts and Synchronization.

1. I have one exchange sync that just works fine and does not drain.
(exchange 2003 and https)
2. I have one exchange sync that does drain ALOT
(exchange 2010 sp1 and http)
3. Gmail does also sync without drain
Maybe it has something to do with exchange 2010 sp1 ?
I am using the email.apk from the sgs2....

I have 2 Exchange 2003 Sp1 accounts, both seem to drain. I've read somewhere that the size of the Inbox could matter, it was advised to keep the total size of the Mailbox under 150Mb. Both of mine are far larger. Is any of you able to test this?

I've test with the original GB email.apk (JVH) and even if it is better, it is not good...
I'll try froyo one (JPG)

I hope this helps, i have the same problem to. In the battery menu there is sometimes a very steep drop in the graph. After removing one of my 2 exchange 2003 accounts it looks a lot better. The one with the ssl connection seems to be the problem. Maybe turning ssl off is an option. I also have connection issue's with the server with ssl connection, also on galaxy tab.

I tried the SGS2 email.apk from Darky 10 R6 but it kept force closing on me. Had to revert back to Darky's Froyo version. I am using stock JVH rom
Darky's Email.apk has been hacked to bypass Exchange security policies i.e. do not enforce policies set by Exchange administrators. I hate the screenlock with pin policy everytime the device screen goes off.
Which custom rom are you using ? Maybe I will try that email apk.

I had used darky 10 final (which is only available at darky's website. (for the FC issue, it is documented everywhere to delete application data to solve it)
Now I am running Crikelo Ginger v54

It does better, still 42% after 5~6hours usually I would have to recharge by this time... looks that it will last at least working hours...
I'll do some testing with some other version of email.apk.
Ciao!

Damn!Thinking to roll back to froyo (probably darky 9.5) because of this...
...I confirm that the drain come from the email application with activesync...
No email configured .... lost 3% in 4hours...
I've configured Hotmail in exchange mode: lost 24% in 1hour...
I think I will have to go back to froyo...

Hello. I think, that problem is only with active sync using SSL. When i turned off SSL, battery holds for about 2 days. (and email is still synced immediately) With SSL, my battery is gone in less than 6 hours.
Can someone confirm?

You could be right, when looking at logcat, I saw many error with ssl handshake.
However,i can not disable it as company mail only support ssl connections.

While I have an Epic, I have the same problem. I found this tidbit on the site for the app I use, Enhanced Email. There is supposedly a fix by turning off your phone, but that sounds like something Steve Jobs might say.

Samsung & Google have identified battery drain issues with Gingerbread on all Samsung phones due to faulty libraries. This is NOT a fault of EE and you will experience this with ANY push enabled app. Check out this link to read more on the issue -> http://tinyurl.com/6xackdy

FB Messenger Alternative

I honestly made the best decision ever of removing the Facebook app from my phone, with it installed, my phone would drain 20% of battery overnight even with greenify. With it removed, I lost only 5% battery, couldn't be happier.
However, with that said, I use the alternative client Swipe, I really like it for normal browsing, but not the Messenger feature. I still have the FB Messenger app due to its calling, emoji, sticker, etc features, but man is it a resource hog. According to the wake lock detector, it woke my device 58 times.
Do any of you know of any other client alternative to the current messenger app with a better theme than the one in Swipe with the same features as current FB Messenger app. Not too fond of Swipe's messenger as it just loads the mobile site version, its features are limited.
If not, do any of you know how to restrict the app properly to not wake my device so often? Greenify seems to have no effect
Trillian will work with your facebook account. Last time I used it, which was about a year ago, the interface wasn't the best to look at but got the job done. It handles other messaging protocols such as Skype, but doesn't work with Whatsapp (naturally).
I was gonna suggest a all in one like trillian and someone on these boards made a facebook messenger and twitter all in one app tho i forget the name. I never go on facebook but I leave it installed but it never takes like any battery, tho I turned off all notifications and turned off chat in the main app and turned off auto load video etc. No issues tho but not many options for third party messenger apps but search forums for the all in one i mentioned.
Possibly IM+? I used this way back in the day with earlier versions of Android, might do the trick! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.shapeservices.impluslite
If I remember correctly you can also use Disa with the facebook plugin. that way you have SMS and facebook in the same app
