[Q] Phone Freezes after updating to Sprint HTC One (M8) Software Update 4.25.651.14 - Sprint HTC One (M8)

I received a push notice to download and install Sprint HTC One (M8) Software Update 4.25.651.14 which was released on 4/9/15 with Wi-Fi Calling enhancements. My phone is rooted. I use Super SU Pro. I use TWRP (Sprint) for my custom recovery. Never had any problems with applying previous OTA updates. I connect via ADB shell and flash stock recovery for version 4.20.651.10 currently installed on my phone. I use One_M8_All-In-One_Kit_v2.0 to perform the shell commands.
I apply the OTA update in the stock recovery from my phone and everything looks good, but when the phone restarts it gets frozen in the white "splash" screen where it says "HTC One powered by Android". I waited over 15 minutes and nothing happened. I was able to recover my phone by booting into the bootloader and flashing TWRP then restoring my nandroid. I could see in the bootloader screen that the firmware was updated to the latest version.
Does anyone know what is causing the phone to freeze after the firmware is updated and the system restarts?
I tried to manually install the OTA zip file using TWRP from my phone to update the software. I selected the Zip file saved in the phone's root folder and used TWRP to apply the update, but got an error message that it "failed".
Does anyone know what steps are necessary to manually apply the OTA software update?

I believe it is is still true that you cant OTA with a unlocked bootloader regardless if you reinstall the stock recovery. You need to relock bootloader install stock recovery. It is much safer and easier to wait until there is a flashable firmware upgrade. The OTA did not install correctly hence the white splash screen.
Look here and READ carefully and install the right zip.

Guess I should have noted I move it

flash the recovery from the ota.zip in fastboot then rename the ota to update.zip and manually install it from the stock recovery. also "fastboot erase cache" before booting your phone. Btw if you are using xposed(or any scripts) it can cause problems, reinstall any mods after first booting the phone.

I'm assuming you're s-on? From what I know if you have a system file that has been modified, the OTA won't work, you have to have a stock non-rooted ROM if you're going to take the OTA.
Check out this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173 if you're s-on relock your bootloader first.
Hope this helps, good luck!

Thank you Vcek. It sounds like I need to do these steps while tethered to my PC in the ADB shell? I will try this method. Maybe one of my mistakes was I did not use the stock recovery from the latest OTA.zip. I had used the previous version OTA.zip's stock recovery to perform the software update installation from my phone.
Some people say I need to RELOCK the bootloader but I have never needed to do this to perform any of the previous OTA.zip updates. In fact, updating my rooted phone has been very easy until I ran into this problem with the latest OTA.zip update. I simply flashed the previous OTA.zip stock recovery tethered to my PC in ADB shell, then ran the latest OTA.zip update saved to my phone's internal storage while my phone remained rooted. Of course, after the OTA.zip was installed, I had to run SuperSU.zip in TWRP recovery from my phone to re-root the phone. Everything was always perfect after those steps.
I don't want to RELOCK my bootloader because then my phone internal storage will be wiped. I am trying to keep my phone from returning to a factory fresh installation. Perhaps there's a step in between that I am missing to restore the phone's apps and data but when I use TWRP to restore my nandroid, the previous OS is restored too.

mukeshdaiv thanks for reporting your similar problem with this latest OTA.zip update. I think our solution to this problem is to manually install the update from the ADB shell tethered to a PC to run the commands to override the phone's recovery. If your phone is still frozen just press the power button while pressing the volume down button to get into the bootloader, then tether your phone to your PC and run the ADB to flash TWRP or other custom recovery and then restore your nandroid. After that, you will see that your phone's firmware was updated to the latest version. So all that's left to do is to update your phone's OS. That's the part I am not sure how to do in ADB.

You don't use ADB-you use a RUU (ROM Update Utility), which is a exe file run from your computer. The RUU includes both software and firmware, as well as the stock recovery.

Thanks again Magnum_Enforcer! I see OMJ's post with a variety of RUU's. It looks like mine is the first one listed. So these RUU's have both the firmware and the software? Do I need to S-Off first before I execute the RUU? If so, I've got some notes how to do that in the ADB shell. Thank you!

S-off is not required. You'll need to relock your bootloader using the command fastboot oem lock. Then double-click the RUU to start the installer. Once it starts simply follow the prompts on your computer to complete the process. For more info hit the second link in my sig and scroll down & read the RUU section.

Magnum_Enforcer thanks very much for your guidance, I really appreciate it. Relocking the bootloader and then unlocking it (so I can re-root my phone) will wipe my phones internal memory, right? How do I restore my Apps & Data with my nandroid since it will restore the previous OS. Then I would have only updated the firmware and the latest OS would be replaced by the nandroid, right? Or am I missing a step? I'll read up on your RUU instructions and do some searching. Thank you!

mukeshdaiv I am glad you were able to restore your Nandroid. Now we need to figure out how to apply the latest OTA.zip for our UNLOCKED (rooted) phones without losing our Apps and Data. I was informed in this forum that we need to run the RUU.exe that OMJ has posted. I asked OMJ to confirm that the RUU.exe will also update the OS (not just the firmware). AND that it can be installed without losing my Apps & Data. I've been told in this forum the bootloader needs to be RELOCKED. That means to UNLOCK the bootloader to ROOT the phone will wipe the phone's internal storage. I will not do that. There is no way I am going lose my Apps and Data to update the OS. I for one will not start from scratch. I have not received a reply from OMJ. I also asked Captain_Throwback the same question if there is a way to apply the RUU.exe, update the firmware and OS without having to wipe my Apps & Data. I have not received a reply from Captain_Throwback. At this point, I think I will need to move to more resources to get some help and answers. I wish you good luck and if you find a solution that works for your phone, please post it here, and I will do the same. Thanks!

i'm having the same problem where y phone is stuck at the white htc one screen as you, and haven't been able to get it to restart from there. i restored the stock recovery and started the ota and it looked to install right but i'm stuck where you mentioned. i think maybe i forgot to relock the bootloader? anyway, i've tried holding the power button and everything and i still can't get anywhere. any help would be greatly appreciated.
edit: i was able to get into the bootloader, and after rebooting it just stays at a black screen right after the first powerup screen. dunno where to go from there though.

Stuck in boot loop and soft brick

My friend's phone is stuck in bootloop and I believe it's soft bricked.
It's a stock brand new HTC One M7.
It was updating one day and he said it might have got corrupted because it just shut down and when it booted back up it was stuck at the HTC Screen and wouldn't do anything.
Over the last week I have been trying to unbrick it.
It's LOCKED and S-ON Sprint HTC One M7.
I did a factory reset, wiped cache, dalvic cache, reboot. I tried putting in fastboot and flashing RUU on it but it kept failing because the RUU I had was a lower version of the image than the current one on the phone and I read online that I can only flash backwards if it's S-OFF.
Any help?
Thanks!

if the phone is new (never tampered with) and still under warranty, send it back for repair or replacement
s-off and run the ruu
unlock bootloader, flash a custom recovery and flash a rom or a nandroid backup
post in the sprint htc one forum for more detailed info
So the first step is S-OFF because I don't think k the warranty is on it.
And then custom recovery and what was the part with a custom nandroid backup? Can I run someone else's nandroid?
And if I put S-OFF on it, I can flash an older version of RUU right?
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
I'm pretty sure that in order to S-off you will need to be booted up first? The good news is that you can flash the full factory RUU with a s-on boot loader locked device so you may need to figure out how to do that first. Do you have an adb/fastboot environment set up? If so you are practically there. On a side note, I have seen no less than 3 m7s fail and softbrick on the first attempt at applying an ota, but it was always after S-off and a conversion to fully stock gpe (these were gsm models). I figured it was just because of the mods but who knows. Anyway, if you can locate and install a fully stock sprint RUU you should be back to where you were before the ota at which point you can proceed with whatever else you want to do.

sorry for the confusion, this was not steps to follow (1-2-3-4) but either 1 or 2 or 3 or 4
if you go for option 2, yes you can flash older ruu.
for option 3, yes you can flash someone else nandroid, but it must be for your phone variant (sprint) and the ideal nandroid backup should be the same OS version.

Right, you need a booted rom to s-off. (at least for the M7_UL dont know for the srpint variant)

Not exactly, you can only flash ruu with a s-on device (and locked/relocked bootloader) if the ruu is same of higher version. In that case the OP need to find another ruu (if any available)
Yeah, I have a 4.2 image when loading RUU, therefore I'm not able to use an RUU.
So what else do I need to do?
And I do have an adb and fastboot environment set up, yes.
Should I instead just S-OFF It, put a custom bootloader on it and then flash a custom recovery?
Yes if you can achieve s-off you can put any RUU you want on it and that will rule out software issues.
Okay so I unlocked it.
However I looked online how to do S-OFF and all the articles I found said the phone has to be on an functional to enable USB debugging mode and to run the appropriate programs to make it S-OFF.
Is there any other way to do it?
Now that you are bootloader unlocked, flash a custom recovery and from there a rom. That should get you back to life so you can proceed however you wish.
I have a custom recovery.
TWRP 2.6.0.0 or something. And I loaded into it and my phone got stuck and the touch wouldn't work. It says "slide to unlock" and sliding doesn't work.
What do I do now? I can't even reboot the light keeps flashing and I even tried under a bright light and still nothing.
I'm letting the battery die to restart. When u do restart it, what do I do about the bad bootloader? Can I just put another one on there? I want Philz now after that terrible experience.

This is very alarming! Be double sure you are flashing exactly what you need. The CWM you would need is 6.0.4.8 found on this page. I'm not sure what TWRP version is suitable as I don't use it. I don't dislike it. I have used it and it has worked.
Can I just do the same thing I did before to install a custom recovery?
Will it override the one I have currently?
Thanks!

We will have to see what it does after you let it die. The way your phone is acting is not good. Unfortunately, we must keep in mind that it may be a hardware fault causing all of this from the start. If it will still charge offline, then you'll get a chance to see if you can power it up into the bootloader and get fastbootUSB.

why are you waiting for it to die ? if you want to get out of recovery and tough isn't working, just hold down the power button and the volume down until the lights on the bottom flash 10 to 15 times, when it goes off, release the power button but continue to hold the volume down, you are now in the bootloader, or should be.
and yes, if you flash another recovery it will overwrite the one that's on there, unfortunately, most rom's require TWRP
---------- Post added at 03:28 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:22 AM ----------
I also just noticed you have the Sprint M7, you cant use the normal recoveries or rom's, they wont work, you need to use the ones built for your phone, which is different to the normal gsm version.
I would try twrp 2.6.3.3 or this http://mdmower.cmphys.com/twrp-m7spr/ a newer custom compiled twrp so your os version dont get wiped on bootloader.
Dang, being with Sprint complicates things?
So will that one be safe to put on my phone? And that means I can't get Philz huh?

No it doesn't complicate things, it's the same procedure, it's like with anything, you just have to make sure you get the right files. Your phone is cdma not gsm.

Okay thank you!
It is unlocked, rooted and had a custom recovery on it!
Now the last thing I need help with is, getting S-OFF because I still can't boot up the phone.

All I see when it boots up is the HTC screen.

You need a working Rom on it to go s-off, all s-off tools are run from an android booted phone, so download a Rom of your choice, in your case a sense Rom, make sure you get it from the link I supplied earlier for your particular phone, move it to the same folder where your adb and fastboot are on your computer, boot your phone into recovery (main screen only, no sub menus) and plug it into your computer, the type
adb push NAME_OF_ROM.zip /sdcard/
Takes a while so be patient, the command window will let you know when it's done.
Unplug your phone and in recovery select install, select your Rom from the list and follow the instructions

So there's a slight problem.
"ADB Devices" doesn't show anything, it says "Devices not found"
The reason I would say is because it does not have USB Debugging enabled.
And I can't get into the phone to enable it because i'm not at that point yet.
Is there anything else I can do besides "adb push" to get the file on there?
Fastboot stuff works fine.
I went to the link you provided and found CynogenMod 11 I wanted to put on there.
After looking inside of the ZIP I downloaded there's a .img file inside called "boot.img" can I do anything with that?
Thanks!

Where did I go wrong?

Okay, so I have an HK m8 on sprint, FW 1.54.654.13.
I was originally on Viper 1.8.0, but wanted to upgrade to 2.0.0, so I went back to my stock backup, with the aforementioned software version.
After restoring that backup I realized I needed to also flash a stock recovery in order to take the OTA. So I flashed the 'Stock Recovery From 1.54.651.8 OTA' over adb from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2736048
So, since flashing that recovery my phone seems to not have a recovery anymore; infact, it constantly reboots after about 1 minute of being booted to system. When I boot into recovery, I get a symbol of a phone with an "!" in a triangle over it.
Where did I go wrong? What recovery should I be using? I can re-flash TWRP, but it seems I still get the bootloop, even though it does actually boot into system (which I've never seen happen from a bootloop). It's been like this for 12+ hours, and no amount of searching has helped me out thus far, so I'm hoping someone here could help me out a little.

This is stock recovery
You could pull the stock recovery from the HK firmware...hopefully that will get you back to normal.
Worse comes to worse run the RUU.
I do not have the recovery.img in my backup. I'm also not S-off, so I think the only way I can upgrade my firmware is through OTA from what I understand, correct? If I could just flash the proper stock recovery I think I would be fine from there?

Alright, thanks! Can I go ahead and RUU 2.22.401.4 directly, or should I just RUU to my current stock firmware and just OTA from there?

2.22.401.4 is not for Sprint.
I would go with the current HK RUU and start fresh.

Damn. Alright, well from what I can see 2.16.654.4 is the latest for Sprint. After downloading O.M.J.'s RUU, would I be good to go straight to viper 2.0.0?

After you install TWRP recovery, yes.
For future reference Viper does OTA's which are not the same as Sprint OTA's...download the Viper OTA and flash in twrp.

Yes, I am aware. But on 1.8.0 I did not get an OTA. Maybe because I'll get it after I upgrade my FW. So after RUUing then reinstalling TWRP, if I restore my viper 1.8.0 backup, I can just OTA to 2.0.0?

I tried flashing the full Rom per your suggestion, but after flashing the 2.0.0 Rom, it's like my phone has no OS and can only boot to bootloader or recovery, not system at all.
I also tried extracting the latest hk ruu to the root of my external SD card and running it through bootloader to no avail.
I feel like I'm missing a vital part of information here. I've never really ruu'd before so I'm new to that but I'm pretty stumped on this whole thing.

get the drivers for your phone + adb, rename the firmware update to firmware.zip, put it in /sdk/platform-tools
put the phone in fastboot, make sure it says fastboot USB and type fastboot devices in terminal to confirm it's connected.
then type in terminal Fastboot oem rebootRUU (capitalization matters.)
your screen will go black with a greyish HTC logo, then type in fastboot flash zip firmware.zip
once it's done doing it's thing type fastboot reboot
this method is pretty much failproof
EDIT: also, if you're flashing ONLY the sprint 2.0.0 update, you'll have to be on capt's twrp 2.7.0.7, otherwise you'll have to flash the full rom, boot into it, reboot into 2.7.1.0, and dirty flash the sprint viper ROM. Hope that helps, cheers >;3

Thanks for the reply! From my understanding, you need to be S-Off for that method, which I am not.
The method I attempted to use is this one, from O.M.J's thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2729173
using 7zip, extract 0P6BIMG.zip to ext sd card
-boot into bootloader
-make sure*hboot*is highlighted, press power button
-it will scan your ext_sd card, then ask if you want to start the update
-press volume up & let it do it's thing...
The problem is, it scans my external SD card just fine but never asks if I want to start the update, nor do I get the option to press volume up etc... I am on captains twrp 2.7.0.7, as I've seen many other users confirm success with this recovery.
Also, I don't see just an update, it seems the Sprint version of the Rom I downloaded is the full rom. I actually did get it to boot once and got this (see screenshot), but it was a dirty flash.

download the full one and the sprint one, flash the first, reboot all the way (doubt you have to finish the automatic setup) then reboot into recovery and dirty flash the sprint one without wiping anything. It'll connect to the CDMA network instead of the GSM one with no problems, you don't even need to be on 2.7.0.7
And if it isn't working in HBOOT just go into recovery and adb sideload it, you shouldn't need to be s-off to do that. Enter adb sideload and just type in a terminal adb sideload (filename)
EDIT: idk why but that picture made me lol irl, KEEP CALM AND KANG AWAY
Alright giving that a shot now, thanks
That message is hilarious to me now, but it wasn't at the time xD
Edit: is it safe to dirty flash the first one, coming from 1.8.0? Also no, I haven't relocked my boot loader.

Ahhh, okay makes sense now. My m7 was s-off and that was the first and last time I ever did a RUU. If I re-lock the boot loader, do I have to go through htcdev again to unlock once more, or will having it locked again not effect root?

Try re download the zip (or try an other rom)maybe you just got an false download. i also had some trouble with my m7 back in the day.
But in your case now you are stuck with no os or bootloop, i give you as advice to follow an soft unbrick method it worked for me, or if you have an usb otg cable and usb or and usb otg thumbstick, put the rom on that usb and connect it to your phone and then try to flash it (if your using twrp you have an option to choose from wich storage you want to use)
Also a piece of advice, when flashing roms, kernels etc please have your phone charged above 50% (just in case).

Can you please post the output of
Code:
fastboot getvar all
please remove your imei and serial number.
Depending on which variant of the M7 you have you probably just need a different version of recovery to install a CM rom. I think they prefer TWRP 2.7.x.x. Post the getvar and we can see what you have. then I can give you a better informed instruction. :good:
P.s also check the md5 of the rom zip you downloaded. Use this tool www.winmd5.com the correct md5 should be listed with the link you downloaded the rom from
failed to mount /dev/block/blah blah blah = needs "block:by-name" support which twrp 2.6.3.3 doesn't have
everything explained here
So update your recovery
and do what danny said above so he can confirm you have the right rom/recovery for your device.

Your getvar looks fine this rom should work fine with your device. Download this version of TWRP https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23501681358561860 (2.7.1.2). dropthe file in your fastboot folder and flash it with fastboot.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery "name-of-recovery".img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Once thats done reflash the rom with the new version of TWRP. It should flash just fine :good:
iv managed to flash cm12.1 now, thanks guys, is there anyway i could get the HTC software back on.

There are a number of ways to return to stock software. You can simply flash a stock rom through twrp or use a stock nandroid. look for rom that match your version main. 7.19.401.22
I think there is even an lollipop 7.19.401.22 RUU for your device but I'm not sure if it will work with s-on though because it's a zip but it certainly wouldnt hurt to try it though. You will need to relock your bootloader and flash it with fastboot.
I'll edit this post with links when I find them unless some one beats me to it

Sorry I am at work so availability is scetchy. I found the ruu but it's for the older 7.19.401.2 lollipop, this won't work for you because your s-on. Downgrading firmware is only possible with s-off.
You can use this stock rom though http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one/development/rom-100-pure-stock-5-0-2-7-19-401-2-t3044041 just flash it with twrp. The thread recommends TWRP 2.8.5.X no need to relock the bootloader or anything silly, just flash it like any other rom :good:
You'll notice that this rom is also for the older 7.19.401.2 so you will need to install the last OTA update to bring your rom in line with your firmware. Okay try this. Download the OTA but select the option "Install Later" connect your m7 to your pc and browse your storage. In the download folder on your phone you should find the OTA in zip format. Copy it to your pc.
Now open the OTA zip on your pc. Inside you'll find another zip called "firmware.zip" extract it then open it. Inside you'll find a recovery.img. extract the recovery file and flash it with fastboot. Now reboot to android and continue to install the OTA. :fingers-crossed:

Yes you will need to unlock the bootloader to flash the recovery, Dont forget to fastboot erase cache after flashing the recovery that is cruicial. You don't need to be relocked to install the OTA though.
When you select install now, the device should reboot to the Stock Recovery. At first the screen will just be black for a short while. Then you'll see an image of a phone with a Green ring and download arrow. If you hold Volume up and press the power button you will see the Stock Recovery and its progress in installing the OTA.
I'm not sure why your device was hanging on boot after installing the OTA. Maybe a bad recovery.img. that's why I say to get the recovery from the OTA file.
its still not working so i mite just install twrp and restore to cm12.1

Your still stuck with this? Try starting the process over, but do not relock your bootloader at any point.
Wipe system data and cache partitions with TWRP Advanced wipe
Flash the Rom with twrp as a clean install.
Reboot and download the OTA. Choose install later, then copy the OTA to your pc. Extract the Stock Recovery and flash it with fastboot. Reboot and install the OTA.
But do not relock your boot loader. Because when you unlock the bootloader, it wipes the device including the data/preload folder. If the preload folder is not intact the OTA will fail

Mismatching build numbers when flashing Stagefright update

Hey guys,
I have an unlocked & rooted Nexus 6 (T-Mo, I believe) that I'm using for Google Fi. I'm currently on the 5.1.1 update that I got pre-root, when Project Fi pushed it to me. My build number (in About phone) is LYZ28E .
Today I was attempting to flash the official Stagefright update via TWRP, however it keeps failing with the following message:
Code:
Package expects build fingerprint of google/shamu/shamu:5.1.1/LYZ28E/1914015 : user/release-keys;
This device has Android/aosp_shamu/shamu: 5.0/LRX21M/dees_troy11191312 : userdebug/test-keys
Again, my ROM is the stock OTA that Google pushed me. I'm not running anything custom aside from TWRP. Any clue why the installer is showing my device as 5.0/LRX21M, when it's actually 5.1.1/LYZ28E?
Thanks in advance!

Oh, I thought you could flash it as long as you downloaded and flashed it manually via recovery, instead of letting the OTA do it's thing automatically. Bummer!
There's no way to remove the recovery without doing a full re-flash either, right? It certainly seems like an exploit worthy of my time to patch, but I was trying to avoid the data loss :/

You can fastboot flash the corresponding factory images. Skip the userdata data image and will will not wipe data. OTA's are worthless if gonna run root and recovery. Someone may make a TWRP flashable. Would have to search for it.
Awesome, I'll dig around and figure out how to skip certain images while flashing and give that a try (I've never had to do that before). I'm pretty comfortable in the terminal though, so I'm not too worried. Thanks for your help, @prdog1

If you're running root, fastboot flash the system.img only. If you don't run a custom kernel, you probably should also fastboot flash the boot.img too.
Keep supersu on your sdcard and after flashing system DO NOT boot the rom. Boot straight into TWRP and flash supersu
If you boot rom install-recovery.sh will install stock recovery on first boot. .flashing super su amended this script so that won't happen.
You can also flash the radio.img. Your choice.

For OTA's the device needs to be unrooted and complete stock. Including 'recovery'. So flashing with TWRP-recovery will not work.
An alternative is to flash only the new system.img with fastboot.
FWIW, recovery flashable updates are here:

Package expects build fingerprint of google/shamu/shamu:5.1.1/LYZ28E/1914015 : user/release-keys;
This device has Android/aosp_shamu/shamu: 5.0/LRX21M/dees_troy11191312 : userdebug/test-keys
Again, my ROM is the stock OTA that Google pushed me. I'm not running anything custom aside from TWRP. Any clue why the installer is showing my device as 5.0/LRX21M, when it's actually 5.1.1/LYZ28E?
Thanks in advance!

I'm having the exact same issue, but theirs gotta be a way around it, not sure how it does it but if I use the sideload option in NRT then it somehow boots STOCK recovery to flash the OTA, problem then for me is I loose connectivity when that happens. I retain sideload ADB connectivity when I try in Linux, but can't get the phone into stock recovery that way. If I can't get it in by the weekend guess I gotta fully return the phone to stock to get that update in. Hopefully somebody figures it out.

Booting to a stock recovery is easy.
"fastboot boot recovery.img"
Then you can adb sideload, as long as your rom is entirely stock and never rooted.
That said, fastboot flashing the system.img would probably be quicker.

You can flash the OTA all day anyway you want but if you are not stock it won't take. Only other way is one of the flashable TWRP versions that were linked to. And right now looks like that thread is down for update.

If I am running everything stock apart from the recovery (using TWRP), with an unlocked bootloader and the device is not rooted, can I simply flash the stock recovery.img without losing any of my data? Is it really that simple? Do I have to use a particular recovery.img?
All I want to do is restore the stock recovery so I can OTA the stagefright update. TWRP is preventing me from doing so at the moment, but I don't want to lose all my data.

Because of this, I did the update twice; different methods, to see of there are possible differences.
Differences between official OTA and flashing the new system.img only.
Update 1: Flashing only the new system image (1,7 Gb) with fastboot.
Update 2: Return to stock LMY47Z and install official OTA (24,2 Mb)
Both updates have the same results. Data and apps were kept but there were changes:
a. Changes in build.prop gone (DPI, Wifi interval);
b. Standard icons because the DPI value 384 was changed to 560;
c. BGN-launcher replaced. Google Now launcher became white again;
d. Root gone (SuperSu and Busybox);
(Update 2. Of course returning to stock, replaces the custom kernel).
After rerooting the N6 the following actions were needed after both update methods:
- edit the file: system/build.prop to change the dpi and wifi interval;
- reflash/reinstall: BGN-Launcher, SuperSU and Busybox;
- uninstall updates of the Google app to get BGN-launcher working;
- replacing icons from drawer to start screen.
So when you have made changes to the system, like DPI settings, an update will leave your data alone, but not the settings.

Yes, that is all you have to do: flash the stock recovery corresponding to the Android build you are currently using. You will not lose any data. Remember, data is stored on the userdata partition, so as long as you don't flash that image, all your data will be left intact.

Thanks, I flashed the LYZ28E recovery and all seemed well. However, I then went to install the OTA, and it ended up giving me the error, with the Android on it's back and the exclamation mark. Rebooted the phone and apparently "Your system is up to date".

The OTA doesn't check the recovery version, since it replaces recovery on first boot anyway. Only matters that its stock.
That said, the only reason not to flash the rightbversiin is if the download link.is down or you have a local copy of a different version anyway.

The exclamation mark isn't an error. That's the stock recovery splash screen. You have to press vol up + power at that screen to get to the menu
How are you trying to flash the OTA?
By unrooted, lets be clear. The rom must never have been rooted. Unrooting a rom won't work

You are right, the OTA doesn't check the version of the recovery. However, I can tell you for a fact that on older Nexus devices, using a recovery from a different version of Android would not allow an update to flash. (It is possible this has changed since then though.) I remember very clearly, helping many users troubleshoot (particularly given that the only available toolkit at the time would flash only one generic stock recovery, and not a specific version), and it was confirmed that the errors users were having were due to using a wrong version of the stock recovery, so the recovery version did indeed matter (at least on the Galaxy Nexus it did).

I press install update now, let the phone reboot and I get the installation screen with the progress bar. It sits at about 10% filled for about 10 seconds then I get the picture of the android laying on it's back with a red triangle and an exclamation mark. Underneath that it just says "Error!".

The only thing I flashed was a stock recovery.img, to replace TWRP. I am trying to get the latest update the normal way, by getting the notification I have an update available, and pressing install update now.

I have never rooted the phone. I updated the phone manually a while back and long story short, I flashed TWRP recovery instead of the stock recovery as I intended to. I just want to revert everything back to stock (which it should be now that I have replaced TWRP with stock recovery)

I believe it changed for lollipop OTA's. I don't think it had changed for kitKat.

If you're.familiar with fastboot already, why not just download the full factory image and flash system, boot, bootloader, radio and recovery images?

[Need Help From Experts] Fix An HTC One From A Big Mess

All I wanted was to upgrade my Rooted M7 to the latest software upgrade, so long short story I flashed recovery to TWRP and my M7 got stuck on logo. I know that I should install a ROM, but I don't know which one I should download and how to install it. How can I fix that? FYI you are talking to a noob :crying:.
Additional Information:
UNLOCKED
M7_UL S-ON
HBOOT 1.57
OS 6.09.401.11
HTC_J15
TWRP 3.0
More Information:
I have downloaded theses files see if I can use it:

One_M7_7.15.401.1_stock_system_dump.zip
One_All-In-One_Kit_v3.1.rar(Hasoon2000)
And I have this update from a long time I think it was downloaded from my M7:

Are you able to access TWRP recovery?
If you can you can use my Nandroid backup here. https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=95897840722641162
Extract the zip on your desktop. You should get a folder and a zip file.
Copy the folder to the TWRP Backups folder on your device using MTP in TWRP.
Location :- /TWRP/BACKUPS/XXXXXXXXXXX/.
Return to twrp home screen and select restore. Then select my backup. Once that's complete you should be good. Reboot from recovery. TWRP may ask if you want to root the device at this point but it's best to wait until after the updates are installed.
To install the ota you need to flash the Stock recovery back to the device. You will find it in the zip file that came with the backup.
Open the zip file on your pc and extract the recovery.img. Copy it to your fastboot folder and flash it like twrp
Code:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Once that's done reboot the device and it should be ready to receive OTA updates. You will need to install 4 or 5 updates to bring your device to the latest. So just keep going untill no more are available. Once you've installed all the updates. Reflash TWRP and root the phone :good:

The uploaded file is fine. It's been downloaded and used many times. How are you downloading it? Through your browser or with a download manager?
Newer versions of TWRP recovery allow MTP connection while in twrp. This allows you to copy files to the device in recovery mode just like if you were doing it in Android. I have not used TWRP 3.0. myself so can't confirm it supports MTP. I'll check and get back to you :good:
@mohdhasan3 can you provide a link the the TWRP 3.0 download you flashed please?

Dear Danny,
Could you check the link for me or upload it to another site, because I checked the two links in Mozilla and Opera with download manager and without with VPN and without its always about 88 mb file
This is the link for TWRP 3.0:

I see now the MTP Device yeah it just like you said. I can see a TWRP folder and a TWRPS File with no name inside the folder. So I'll add a new folder naming Backup and wait for your working link.
By the way, thanks for helping I appreciate your effort

Yes, I'm. Now I'm extracting the zip then I'll copy the folder as you said to TWRP/BACKUPS/********* :good:
Updating Progress:
Putting the folder in TWRP/BACKUPS/"In Here" will not work. So I did a backup to see where it goes. After it completed, the Backup saved in TWRP/BACKUPS/SH35********(Device Serial[1])/2016-02-19--11-28-11(Today's Date)/"In Here". Then I replaced this Backup Files with the Nandroid Backup Files.
[1] Device Serial can be found with ADB writing in the command prompt opened from the ADB folder location after connecting the device to the PC and enabling USB debugging "adb devices"
You succeeded -my bro- in restoring my M7 again to normal thank you very much :victory:, but still didn't reach my goal I'll continue now in progressing and will keep you in touch :good:
Updating Progress 1:
After I downloaded the latest OTA, I installed it. M7 rebooted then it went to the recovery that showed up with red triangle, pressed the three combinations Power + Volume Up + Volume Down I got the recovery menu, then I wiped cache partition and the red triangle went to I think green likely circle. Rebooted, tried again it starts to updating then after maybe about a quarter of the updating bar red triangle showed up again saying installation aborted. Rebooted, then tried again -here is my problem from long time- OTA was deleted after I went to check for updates now I'm downloading again and will try one more time. I need your help my brother @Danny201281
Updating Progress 2:
Same. Installation aborted after almost half-quarter of the updating bar then red triangle again. Help is appreciated.
I think I know the solution now, but first the error is same like this except the Package:

I recommend for anyone have this problem too to download the latest OTA from device, copy it to desktop, extract recovery.img from firmware.zip inside the OTA, flash, then install update and it will work PERFECTLY :good:
I don't know how to thank you my brother you are GREAAAT :fingers-crossed:. Thank you very very much. All credits goes to @Danny201281 for fixing my device.

If I can how can I install ROMs and how can I S-OFF M7?

I recommend for anyone have this problem too to download the latest OTA from device, copy it to desktop, extract recovery.img from firmware.zip inside the OTA, flash, then install update and it will work PERFECTLY :good:
I don't know how to thank you my brother you are GREAAAT :fingers-crossed:. Thank you very very much. All credits goes to @Danny201281 for fixing my device.

Yes you can now flash custom lollipop roms, the process is fairly simple. Choose the Rom you want. Download it and copy it to your devices storage. Reboot TWRP recovery and install the Rom.
To gain s-off your only option is Sunshine app. It's not free to use unfortunately but its very simple and effective.
All other methods have either been patched against by HTC or discontinued by there developers. Rumrunner still works but only for devices with hboot 155 or below. ?
