After reading all the threads about rooting the new S6 (technically the inability to root) and all the talk about unlocking, I am not quite clear on if there is a round-about way to get root. Can I: unlock my phone, put in another carriers SIM (like T-Mobile) and with that SIM in root the phone? Is it possible to roll back the operating system back to one that does have a vulnerability to allow root.
What makes AT&T version unable to root when it runs the same operating system as T-Mobile (I am assuming they run the same operating system). Why is it so definitive that there won't be a root for this phone?
I am have read articles, but I want to hear a dumbed-down, to the point explanation from people who understand how this works.

On the att model the bootloader is locked down tight whereas on tmo it can be unlocked. That is the issue. The things you mentioned won't work unfortunately.

You're asking a few different questions so i will try to answer them as best I can.
1st things 1st. All versions of the GS6 can be rooted. However, the AT&T and Verizon versions have locked bootloaders which mean that as of right now, there is no way to flash a custom recovery making it impossible flash roms. Having a rooted phone with a locked bootloader is fine as you can still install apps that require root it really just means no custom recovery and no custom roms.
The other thing about using a different sim card is called SIM UNLOCKING or carrier unlocking. This is something that the original carrier should do for you for free once you've paid the device off and do not owe anything on it. Also, most carriers like T-Mobile will not unlock it for you until you've used the phone on their network for at least 40 days (dont quote me on that, its 40 give or take 5 days)
So, to be clear its not rooting that allows you to use a foreign sim its SIM unlocking and this can be done for free by the carrier once you pay the phone off.
All versions of the GS6 can be rooted its just some even after you root will not be able install custom roms.

Thank you so much for clarifying that for me but that leaves me with more questions. So you are saying I can still root my ATT phone? I need root access for giving root privileges to other apps and not to flash custom roms. I want to be able to remove bloatware and tweak the performance of the phone. Is that a different kind of root? I rooted my GS4 with an app I put on the phone and not with Odin. Is that what I need to do again if I am not planning on modding my rom?

Thank you so much for explaining all that for me. I guess there aren't many people out there that want root without the expectation to flash their ROM. I will keep researching till I find a way to get root where I don't need to flash the ROM with it.

hi, i'm from the x10 forum converting to a nexus one =) I searched around and I'm a little bit confused about rooting for flashing roms. I see some guides about unlocking the bootloader first, then rooting. ( i think old method??) Now theres the one click root, am i required to unlock the bootloader first, then use the 1 click root, because i know the 1 click root doesn't unlock the bootloader.
so first do i have to unlock bootloader, and if i do, can i use the 1 click root with unlocking bootloader? and can i load a rom after i root without unlocking the bootloader?
I also read on a different website that unlocking the bootloader is only required for phones locked to a provider, so does that mean that if i unlock the bootloader, my phone will also be network unlocked?
Just want to get this right so i dont' brick my new phone tomorrow
You don't need to unlock the bootloader.
Once rooted, you will need a custom recovery to flash new roms.
Make sure you use a recovery that is compatible with your screen (SLCD requires the newer Amon Ra).

Better to Unlock bootloader
One click root is an amazing thing. It helps you root your android and install recovery without unlocking bootloader and voiding your warranty. But its better to unlock your bootloader just to be on the safer side. Stock roms flash both the Rom and the recovery. Froyo 2.2.1 even reverts an already rooted device.
Warning: your warranty will be void if you unlock bootloader.

Okay but why do we Nexus folks care that the app can get Samsung unlock codes and enable a feature that was never disabled on our phones in the first place?
And why would we prefer a Windows app to an on-device root method?

@galaxys and inferus- oneclickroot is the best, thats how i got my x10 rooted, but sony's epic fail is forcing me to change over to something more updated, i'm sick of being stuck on 1.6. so no worries about bootloader?

The Nexus isn't locked to any carrier, but the hardware is specific to different frequencies. For example, I took my T-Mo nexus to the UK earlier this year, switched out the SIM for an Orange one, and everything was great. However, if I use an AT&T SIM, I will only get 2G speeds because AT&T uses a 3G frequency that's not supported by the T-Mo nexus hardware.
Do a wiki search on the carrier you want, and it will list the operating frequencies for their network - just compare with you phone specs for compatibility.

OK first post here. I have done a fair bit of reading and searching but still have a couple of questions. I have just bought a Captivate. Made 3 phone calls with it and that's it. It has already been rooted and unlocked by the seller. I know if I upgrade to 2.2 via KiesMini it will remove the unlock and root. After the update can I unlock and root again. ? I hear Super One Click might root it. I have the code numbers from the original unlocking. What can I use to unlock it? Thanks
you dont lose the unlock by updating it. even if you did, you have the code so it doesnt matter. you dont need it unlocked if you are staying on ATT....unlocking is so you can stick another providers SIM card in and use it on any GSM carrier
I am not on AT&T. I have an AT&T phone that's used on Roger's. That's why it needs to stay unlocked.

Use the SIM you intend to use plus the code previously extracted. [APP]SuperOneClick v1.7 (Root, Unroot, Enable Non-Market App works on Froyo.
Update. Unlocked and rooted phone. Updated with Kies Mini to Froyo 2.2. Phone remained unlocked after update. Root was gone. Used SuperOneClick 1.7 and root was back. No problems at all.
So I really miss rooting and modding my phones so I was thinking about do that Chinese method of unlocking my verizon wireless moto x. I just have a couple questions if anyone could answer I'd appreciate it. I can't find much info about 4.4.2 for the verizon moto x because before this unlock discovery, it wasn't possible
1. Once I unlock, is rooting just a simple adb command away?
2. Will I still be able receive android updates via OTA from verizon in the future? Assuming I remain on stock rom and don't flash a rom.

1. after you unlock the bootloader Rooting is as easy as installed TWRP or CWM then flashing SuperSU flashable sip and your rooted.

Also, with an unlocked bootloader....you now have a phone that is no different than a dev edition. Aside from your warranty.
There's nothing else special about the dev edition. You keep your warranty on a DE.....that's where its specialness ends.

Yeah thanks a lot! My plan would be to just run stock software but just add the tethering xposed module. But my main concern was receiving future OTAs so it's good to know that I still can. Is it pretty safe to root/unlock this phone? My galaxy nexus was a breeze(obviously being a nexus), but like my S3, there was no flashing back to stock recovery, taking OTA, an than flashing CWM again. At least it wasn't as easy as you described lol I think because there was always concern about whether the update removed ability to root access. Is that possible with this phone or with the unlocking of the bootloader, does that take that variable out? Thanks again. Oh yeah last question, once I'm unlocked, can I lock it back up again and go back to completely stock if I wanted to for some reason? Or is it a done deal.

the unlocking the bootloader process is kind of a pain but not too bad.
custom recovery and root are as simple as one command and one flashable zip
as long as you follow directions and read before doing anything then it should be safe. but rooting and modifying your phone is never %100 save.
when you unlock your bootloader you will always be able to root your phone no matter what android version your on. but it is always possible that they make some crazy change and we have issues.
once unlocked you can relock with with "fastboot oem lock" but that stupid warning msg about you bootloader being unlocked won't go away unless you flash a custom boot screen.

Unlocking the bootloader is pretty easy if you have adb setup. Don't forget to backup via helium (download to computer or cloud not local.) since unlocking will delete everything and helium can work without root.
Xposed module is great, less intrusive than flashing roms and you can easily get the tethering, etc.

I just want to root my HTC Desire 510 in order to use Xmod game assistant and just to delete bloatware. I tried using kingoroot, it said success, but it actually didn't even work. I found out that you need to unlock the bootloader. I don't really want to this, i have no interest in it. I was thinking of using Kingoroot's HTC bootloader unlock to unlock it, then root it using the kingoroot rooter, then re-lock the bootloader with the Kingoroot bootloader program. Is it risky? Please note my phone has no important data, it's new. And I do not want to install anything custom. Just get xmod and remove bloatware. That's all I need.
Would this all work? Please help.

No this won't work and the number one reason is because if you root the phone and then spend your time deleting all the bloatware you'll be wasting your time if you don't install a kernel with write protection removed because as soon as you reboot the phone will reinstall everything! So you need to unlock the bootloader and then install the custom recovery and then make a backup first before doing anything else and then install the kernel with write protection removed and then delete bloatware!

Yes. Although be warned rooting will restore the phone to stock after unlocking the bootloader.
Can you even use the phone if you make changes? What I mean is isn't the point behind a locked bootloader to keep changes from being made? So if you unlock -> make a change (rooting for example) -> then relock .... doesn't that equal bootloop when the bootloader notices you've changed something?
For my two cents... I'm probably more of a noob than you @uRager, and I got through the unlocking and rooting process with not too much trouble. I think the good old fashioned way will probably serve you the best. And there are several kernels that are just a modified version of the stock kernel (write protection removed) so a couple more minutes will get the bloat removed as well. Also don't be afraid to ask questions, from what Ive seen they usually get answered.
Can I install TWRP for the AT&T version with Nougat? I have heard that if I try it will brick. I'd really like to install a new ROM so I can get rid of all the crapware that comes with the phone.

The 920A At&t cant be rooted as of yet and no twrp because the bootloader is locked...

I recently talked to at&t about getting my bootloader unlocked and a supervisor told me the only way to do so without bricking would be to being it in to an at&t store and they will unlock the bootloader.. anybody else have this told to them?
They're most likely taking about a Sim unlock not bootloader. Also there is a method for rooting it but you have to be on a specific bootloader and you can only use it on lolipop.

Ya, I know about that root method. Unfortunately, my phone decided to update itself a few weeks ago and now its on BL 5. So that's pretty much a no go.
In relation to bringing in the store for a BL unlock, I did specifically ask and made sure the tech I was speaking with knew the difference between BL and sim unlock. In fact, i made it very known that my radio was already unlocked, I done that weeks before i talked to her.
