[Q] External share? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi.
I got the Lollipop update for my Z3 Compact (T-mobile), and now I see i can add an external share to my phone. Does this mean I can add my Nas (a special share for my phone) to offload images and videos to? If so, how do I add the share? Can't find any info on this subject. Anyone added an external share? Thanks in advance.
Neo

Yes, it can connect to SMB (Windows) shares. The KitKat builds had this capability as well. On my Lollipop phone my home computer share is still visible in the storage control from when I connected to it with KitKat.
Personally, I prefer to use the tabs in Root Explorer to browse my PC file system.

So if I understand correctly, I can connect to my nas to offload pictures and videos? I really wanna avoid opening the lid each time my phone is full of videos. Dropbox isn't a really viable option either. So now I only have to figure out how to connect the two... Any tutorials?

App idea: Simple share music server (wifi)

Hey all.
How about a simple music server for the G1 that uses a windows compatible file sharing system? (smb?)
I am always at a loss for music to listen to on my laptop, but my G1 has about 10 gigs of music on it.. it would be great to have an app that shared this out simply, and allowed my windows box to browse the contents of the phone without having to tether via usb.
By the by, I'm available to any developers out there who need animation / graphics for Android apps / games. Get in touch via my website at cartoonmonkey dot com.

That would completely rape your battery, you'd need to have it plugged in after an hour or two. Why not just use a USB cord?
If there's anyone doing the opposite of this, and wants to listen to music on their G1 that's stored on the PC, check out five: http://code.google.com/p/five/
Unfortunately there's only a Linux server atm.
Use Orb.com works great for me, can view my web cam, open any picture, most videos, and get all the music from it.

[Q] adding a smb share in galleries

Hello,
a question: is it possible to manual add a smb share in the gallery?
If i use a program like ES file explorer i can see and acces my smb shares, but if i open gallery i don't see the smb share (nor can i add a smb share). It would be nice if this could be done somehow because another programm photoframe looks to the gallery to see what pictures are stored in the gallery. It would be great to use to phone as a digital slideshow when it's charging
My phone is rooted (i don't know if this can help to find a anser to my question). If anyone has an idea than that would be great.
I will take a guess:
1) The gallery application is updated with content every time you restart your phone or re-insert your SD card. Only at this point does it populate the gallery with content.
2) The smb share you see with the explorer app is not mounted onto your phone at all so even if you triggered a rescan of the sd card it would still miss the smb share unless the application provided some kind of a driver for the smb share.
3) A thought would be to try and make a directory on your SD card, mount the smb share to it and find a way to trigger the sd card scan ad hope that it picks it up.

Many thanks from Noob

Hello all!
Having received my Nexus 7 over the weekend I wanted to thank the community for all the help (unwittingly) provided so far. Despite this being my first android device, so far I've taken tentative first steps to getting it doing what I want and:
- rooted the device using the tool kit;
- got flash working (in firefox beta) for iplayer (works with browser in desktop mode only, but I think that's right?)
The intention is to use USB OTG to expand storage capacity and use the tablet for media consumption and connectivity when out and about. So Tasker has been downloaded (to set home and away profiles) and the readthrough on here digested (initially at least!).
Next steps: find a way (automated through Tasker) to allow the tablet to mount our NAS when at home, so that the media plays pick up all the media on it; and determine how to print from the tablet on the networked printer (hosted by the NAS).
Any clues on a smb client that can be automated on Tasker are appreciated, as are good media players with library functionality (hoping XBMC will handle movies in the future, but a good music player would be appreciated)
Many thanks once again and I hope that one day through my adventures I might be able to help someone else too.

RAZR i: PC Software for Media?

Hey can anyone recommend good software for managing media? I particularly want to transfer photos easily. I have a program for music, but I'm open to recommendations. I know that Samsung has Kies and Sony has Media Go, both are useful. Does Motorola have any official media software?

Try AirDroid. The transfer is over wifi and you can transfer almost everything. Besides it is a file manager, ftp server, system manager...
Thanks for the recommendation. I'm really looking for PC/laptop software, I find it really easy to manage media from there. I see Songbird will only connect in Mass Storage Mode and Songbird is OK for music but not pictures. I'll find something eventually!

Is Motorola Motocast acceptable http://www.mymotocast.com/download
Hi, that software looks PERFECT. I tried it with the RAZR i and it won't set up at all. I have everything installed but cannot manage media let alone sync anything. Is this software compatible with the RAZR i?

Well according to the download on Play it says not.
You mentioned Medio Go so presumably you also use it? You can copy your photos etc in to Media Go and simply select your folder/s from there and select “Add to” Your phone will then show up as “Unnamed device” with the sub-options of moving them to internal or external memory, or you can simply transfer them directly from your pictures folder. No offence intended but I don’t see the problem.
This is my first Motorola (and also Android) phone, but they sure don’t seem too concerned about providing PC media management.
How about google Picasa?
No worries, I get it; if you have use for something, you understand, if you don't need something, you won't understand. A few of my other devices (Apple and Sony) allow for quick and automatic movement of media from A to B or vice versa just by connecting the devices, I'm looking for the same now. I've been using the 10 camera shot per second feature and the photos are really stacking up. Drag and drop is a bit too 1990s for me. I've uninstalled Media Go now, I thought it didn't even recognise non-Sony devices? I'll give it a go then, if you say it appears.
True about Motorola and PC management, everywhere related to my phone it directs me to Motocast. I emailed them and they said the RAZR i is not compatible. Nevermind, I'll find something.
All I’m saying is that you can transfer files/folders via Media Go using “Add to” on right-clicking in Windows.
Whether this is the functionality you’re actually looking for I’m not sure but it works for me. I’ve used it to transfer a couple of albums and a number of tracks over (although my Walkman is my main portable music source), and after reading your thread I thought I’d see how it works with photos and no problems.
Just tried it out with iTunes but there doesn’t seem to be an obvious way of doing the same: there may be,but I can’t be bothered to find out!
Thanks buddy, I appreciate your help.
For music, if you do like iTunes, I have a recommendation. There is an app called iSyncr which allows you to copy any lists in your iTunes directly to your phone. If you use their Rocket Player to use the music, it will update your playcounts etc. Music at least, I've got covered! :good:

Can any ROM make the Note5 support OTG thru the GearVR 2016 external port?

So, the 2016 GearVR (black one) supposedly supports OTG storage through its external USB Type-C port.
But I guess it was only possible when using the now terminated Note 7.
When I try using a USB drive through said port using my Note 5, there's no sign of it in the Gear VR video players or even the Samsung Gear image gallery.
So is it possible for a ROM to achieve this? OTG through GearVR 2016 port?
:fingers-crossed::fingers-crossed:
I have not been able to access anything o the MicroUSB port myself. Not sure if your purpose is to store big 3D movies, but what I do is have a SMB / FTP NAS(Asus router) and use file manager to access the videos on network.

Precisely. But how does this solution work? Can Moon Player access the movies seamlessly? Does the Network Drive show up as a storage drive?

After a lot of researching.. I finally found a solution that worked for me.
First I use ;
[Cardboard for Gear VR] to disable GearVR services from running. There are other apps that can stop the service from starting- making GearVR act like a Google Cardboard
then I use [AiCloud] from ASUS - I have an Asus router. This allows me to access my USB drive plugged into Router securely. There are other apps that can do this. Even if you do a share from PC on the network. That is a different discussion and you can find it easily online.
I brows my files on the NAS and click it using AiCloud. It asks what player I want to use, I use [VRTV] (The best looking one for watching videos on GearVR . You can name you files with key words to launch it in a specific format, so you don't have to select it everytime in 2D mode.
I use a bluetooth game controller Moga. I reassigned the buttons to exit, back button, play , go forward , etc..
Now I kick back and can back out to AiCloud when done , WITH GEARVR ON , close right eye and select another movie with controller.
